      @TailGate Tinkerer I switched over to Sony. I would say yea, fond memories, simplicity, great image quality. Not that what I’m using doesn’t also give me those things. Part of it is nostalgia for me but also the fact that they are great cameras that have aged well.

      I recently picked up a Canon C200 for under $2k. I bought it because I needed a camera that wouldn't overheat. Canon M200 - overheated. Canon R6 - overheated . Canon R10 - overheated. The best camera is the one that doesn't shut down when you are shooting an event.

    8bit 420 outperforms film since you get 9 stops with 35mm film. People are spoiled and get caught up in specs. C200 is an insane value. I own a C100mk2 and a C200 both bought used. Amazing how much bang for the buck you get.

      Awesome combo. I love the C100mkii. Still an awesome camera! I do now have a C200 though, but only because I wanted to move away from HDMI and use SDI. I mean, among other reasons, but that was definitely a pro on my list.

  • @Sutterjack

    Good points - C200 price drop is probably an indicator of the coming new Canon offerings. The C200 is an odd duck and not being able to 10bit 422 internally to SD is ridiculous -reason I didn't buy one when it came out. Good points about the 8 bit Canon codec - as a C100 M2 cult member it still amazes me the image quality and gradability you can get out of these tiny files. That said I finally have conceded it is what it is. I've tried everything to push the quality of my C100 files up (especially in the shadows) but you just can't pull anything more out of limited codec. I know when I finally upgrade to 4K 10bit 422 I'll say "Why did I wait so long?" but for what I shoot (lots of concerts and daylight documentary) C100 still serves me. Need more commercial work to justify the upgrade!

    • @alexshotthese
      @alexshotthese  Год назад +1

      Absolutely agree that having 10bit will help push the grade, but even in 10bit, if you don’t watch your shadows and try to pull them up, you’re bound to introduce terrible noise and artifacts. 10bit is definitely better, but the 8bit out of canon’s cinema line has been pretty amazing and that’s coming from a guy who owns an R5 and pocket 4k! I’ll always hold a soft spot for the C100mkii though. I just know with the price drop of the c200, it’s now worth it! At least in my opinion. Thanks for watching and commenting, always means a lot.

      @@alexshotthese I really wish Canon had kept the form factor of the C100 M2 and just come out with a C100 M3 with 4k 10 bit 422 on SD.. You nailed it - the noise and artifacting are my biggest pain points on the C100 files. My biggest shooting complaint is the fact you can't move the focus point - I can forgive the terrible face recognition, and fair autofocus if you could just move the focus point - would be really helpful.

    • @alexshotthese
      @alexshotthese  Год назад +1

      There’s a trick I use that I learned from Philip Bloom. If you set your side handle’s button, which I think is 7, to AF lock. Then you can position the camera to get your focus, tap 7, it locks the AF, and then pan it back to your original composition. That is if you’re doing any talking head stuff and if that person isn’t moving around a ton.

    • @alexshotthese
      @alexshotthese  9 дней назад +1

      Actually really comparable. The only thing I’d say is the C200 has over the C100mkii is more bitrate info being recorded. C100mkii is like 24mbps-35mbps where as the C200 is recording 150mbps. Just makes it more of a denser file but the C100mkii is no slouch. It’s magic how the image is put into that small of a file size.

      @healing2gether 9 дней назад

      @@alexshotthese I appreciate the info! I’ve been shooting with the C100 Mk2 for a while now and couldn’t love it anymore than I do!
      It’s been a wonderful quality, easy to use camera with file sizes so small I’m still always shocked.
      But I have been getting more clientele requesting 4K files, but I don’t need anything elaborate or even 10 bit.
      I think it’s simply a matter of those clients editor requesting 4K for whatever reason, but I need to accommodate.
      I think the 1080 coming out of the C100mkii is more than sufficient for anything I do.
      But I need to pick up something to complement my EOS R on client shoots because I only use the EOS for tight shots we have to move around a lot.

      I don't personally own the C200 anymore. When I did have it though it was decent in low light, but honestly no where near the range of, say, the Sony A7siii or FX3. I also never personally put a LUT on my monitors to expose since I generally expose to the right. Canon's seem to be notorious in the fact that, if you're not clipping your highlights and are on the edge of doing so then you can bring it all down in post, but once you introduce noise in the shadows it's a pain to remove/hide.

    Bought my first C200 for full boat $7,500 in 2017 to shoot a documentary. It was great. Had some quirks, still does but I agree, the 8 bit 4:2:0 is completely usable for 80% of things if you know how to light and expose like a pro. Is 10-bit 4:2:2 better? Obviously. Will your clients care? 90% of them, no. The RAW is amazing quality and I have five 256GB EgoDisk CFast cards so that nets me 170 minutes of RAW, if needed. The RAW to ProRes dance is now super quick and easy with my M1 Max MBP.
    I just scored a second C200 off Ebay with only 124 hours, it's like new, for $2k as I wanted to have a second one for live streaming and live broadcast. The camera is unique, and very misunderstood. At the time it came out, Canon was selling the C300MKII so it's not unexpected that Canon never put a 10-bit 4:2:2 codec into it because then nobody would have bought the C300 MKII. The C200 is basically a RAW camera. If you're not going to primarily shoot RAW with it, you're buying the wrong camera.
    People just basically wanted what the C300 MKIII turned out to be, a 10bit 4:2:2 camera that also shot RAW internally and Canon gave it to them. Sadly now though, the FX9 won the race and I see used C300 MKIIIs NOT selling even priced at $5,500 used because the freelancer market/clients demand FX9/FX6 only, it's almost like Canons don't exist anymore in the Southern California market. If you don't freelance and are a production company or your clients don't care which camera you use, C200 is a STEAL at $3,500 new or $2k used. Still plenty of EF lenses around, I scored a CN E 18-80 for a very good deal a couple of years ago. With my C200s that lens look amazing as well as with my EF 70-200 f/2.8 IS II.
    Thinking about adding an EasyRig MiniMax to the stable and some DZO Vespids too for another documentary I have coming up, the C200 has a lot of life left in it. The C70 had a great sensor and makes beautiful images, but the ergonomics suck, it's built pretty crappy and fragile and no SDI was a dealbreaker for me, I'd much rather shoot CRL with a C200 for clients than with a C70. Proper XLRs, SDI out, a decent form factor, the C200 to me is just a better, more professional tool than the C70, even though the C70 has a better sensor and codecs.

    • @alexshotthese
      @alexshotthese  Год назад

      Awesome comment! Thanks for watching too. Yeah the C200 is still a workhorse and all around great camera. Even now the C200B is $1999 which is a steal! I have noticed a lot of C300mkiii’s for sale…that’s a shame. Canon really shot themselves in the foot with that. Also, while the C70 produces an amazing image, the body and ergonomics suck. We have one here at work and it absolutely feels 100% cheap. Screen is lose and the buttons feel terrible. The way the C200 is laid out is a dream.

    • @danbrockettDOP
      @danbrockettDOP Год назад +1

      @@alexshotthese Thanks Alex. I agree. It's funny how things have shifted the past decade. Canon had a revolutionary pro camera with the C300 MKI. It was THE camera to get in the mid level corporate as well as documentary space, even though it cost $16K at the time! Then Sony came out with the FS7 which started to swing the pendulum but the FS7 had awful SOOC colors, like some of the worst I've ever seen but the SLog 3 footage could be graded to look good, but it's AF was useless. Then Canon came out with the C300 MKII, which sold pretty well but lacking the 4K 60p that a lot of shooters really wanted but it did have noticeably better AF. Sony then came out with the FS7 MKII, which fixed some of the original FS7s issues and it sold well and sales and use of the 300 MKII went way down from what I experienced. Great camera but TERRIBLE design with the ultra tall dorky monitor perched so high on the handle and the TWO thick cables from body rear to handle top that were an accident waiting to happen.
      When Canon came out with the C300 MKIII, it did really well in sales, I shot a TV series with it and it is a great camera. But once the FX9 had been out for a while, it basically buried the C300 MKIII and I'm not quite sure why? I've shot both of them and I find them pretty much equal objectively, the electronic variable ND on the FX9 is a KILLER feature, but clients wouldn't care about that. The AF on the FX9 is slightly better than the 300 MKIII but not by a lot. Even though S-Cinetone was a huge improvement for Sony, objectively, I find the C300 MKIII SOOC colors better than the Sony but not by a lot. Once again, stuff that clients would never notice.
      But for some reason, the FX9/6/3 completely took root in the freelancer world, it's literally the only camera that about 75% of freelance clients, like through Crews Control, Production Hub, Staff Me Up, will accept, if they care about cameras. Not all do, but more than half seem to. It seems weird to me that the freelancer market isn't more 50/50 between the Canon/Sony and same with BMD, most clients have never heard of it and won't hire you if you tell them you have a UMP 12k or a Pocket 6K Pro. Anytime I get a freelance shoot where the client has already shot on the east Coast or in Europe or internationally, they are ALWAYS going to tell me, "We shot FX9 in London/etc. and need to hire a DP with FX9 in LA so all of the footage matches." Understandable, but just makes getting work if you are a Canon or BMD owner very difficult with these sorts of corporate and even broadcast shoots.

      @danbrockettDOP oh I know. I worked for a production house that used the C300 for a long time until we moved into RED, but the C300 still has a nice image even in 2023.
      It’s crazy how that shifted though…I’ve never been a big fan of Sony after getting burned by their cameras and colors, but I do appreciate how far they’ve come with their colors and autofocus. I agree though I’d think they’d have a shared market. Also, kind of weird of clients to say no to a UMP 12K or Pocket 6K. If you were to shoot raw then they’d have a lot of flexibility to match that camera with Sony. Unless they just don’t have the time or talent to match them.
      I’m hoping Canon can shift the market again. I enjoy canons and the way they render an image.

      I’d say it comes down to what you’re going to be doing with them. The C70 doesn’t have an EVF, but it’s tiny form factor is something you can pretty much pack up and take anywhere. C70 is also a lot lighter so if you plan on doing any handheld work you’ll probably get some micro jitters. C200 has the EVF and it’s got heft to it, but with that it’s a bitch to try and take anywhere with you and be discreet. C70 does have a better image though, but C200’s raw is a great image to this day. Just takes up a lot more space. Can’t talk to the C70’s raw and how much space it takes up. From others videos on its raw it looks wonderful.
      Again, really comes down to what you plan on doing with it.

    I'm gonna buy this cam on ebay, but it has no lens, can I use my Canon 60D lens for this?

      Unfortunately not. The connection is on the outside instead of on the inside where the grip connects.

      Thanks for watching and commenting. Upon further research it was indeed released in 2017. It was announced May and available for purchase in August. Maybe it became more popular in 2018?

      I bought mine from B&H in the Summer of 2017 and I was one of the first ones in the country to have one. I had it on pre-order for six months and mine was the first batch.

      As I state in the video, everything you get for the C200 I don’t think it’s overpriced at all. Full size xlr’s, battery that lasts for a long while, built in ND filters, the ability to shoot 8bit as well as canon’s Raw light, and it being an EF mount means you should be able to find plenty of lens options.
      Also, the C200B, which is just the body of the camera is now on sale for $1,999

    I want to be fully be onboard. It’s just that the FX30 exists 😂not to mention perhaps an XH-2s for the same price as a C200 right now. Or perhaps an R7 with ND filter drop ins + hot shoe XLR. BUT if you want to be a an official filmmaking gang member / certified them obviously roll with a c300 markII or C200! 😂

    • @alexshotthese

      Those are all great options too. I’m just stating how the price of the C200 now justifies what you get out of it.
      Those other cameras you mentioned would be great, but you still have to kit them out to be proper cinema camera where as the C200 is just ready to go out of the box.

      that true all great options but these cameras are way more user friendly in a film maker sense. like the assist tools for exposure are really help full and they are ready to go out of the box :)

      FX30 has awful low light performance some of the worst I have seen damn near as bad as micro 4/3 and its apsc and it also has really bad dynamic range and a really bad rolling shutter that jellos with any and all movement. Its a really cheap sensor.

      Plenty of other videos out there showing the footage of the C200, but if you look through my videos you’ll see a doc I did with the C200 if your curious to see what I shot with it.
