Track-Ready Mitsubishi Evolution IX SE - One Take

- This isn't our first, our second, or even our third Evo here on The Smoking Tire, but every single one we drive seems to be better than the last. Aleksey's track-ready Evo IX features a relatively mild 310 HP at the wheels, but between the weight reduction modifications and a finely dialed in suspension, not many cars out there could keep up with this monster on a race track.
You know what I really like about these videos, besides the awesome cars and driving? It's seeing the owners open up and start to smile when Matt is driving their cars and giving them compliments. Major props to you Matt for that, very addictive videos, would watch them all day if I could!
That "No Rubbing" comment was clearly Shots Fired
+AxshunJaxon Jackson Etched in TST history xD
Compared to another.. indeed.
all of us cringed with that rubbing evo that gave us a bad image lol
I cant understand people that buy these cars and slam them. Build them for performance not just looks.
@@hugolundin9946 No shit, slamming them so you can't even drive over a damn speed bump straight on is retarded
This might be one of my favorite evo's... Always wanted to see a road race setup with good suspension and brakes. Most you see are just all about power and straight line. I like I like.
Love this car. It's so "no bullshit" and honest. I could see me just driving myself into trance with this thing in the mountains.
All the work done was with my hands. RESPECT.
Thanks man
hella
I've owned an Evo IX for 6 years, and despite driving cars like the M3, GTR, 458, 911 turbo, Viper GTS, Panamera turbo, 5.0 POS mustang etc, I have never found a better car where you can feel the road through your arse and the drivers wheel and drive it on the limit with as much pleasure as the Evo. The only thing comparable to a crisp 4cyl, spooling turbo, and blow off valve (in my opinion) was the 458 with the symphony behind your head.
Yes the interior is plastic, yes i've spent an ungodly amount of money on mods, yes the turbo takes the better part of a decade to reach full load if you're at low rev, but walking out to it as a daily driver makes you smile every time you let off the pedal and let the BOV flutter. I cycle through cars faster than my grandma uses colostemy bags, but this car is the shit, and its the only car I can confidently say I will never sell.
And btw the road you're on is pronounced "bukkake"
USTankslashercoal the one that will never getaway. I agree with this message.
Try the Caterham R500 it's better than any other car, you can't do anything better to a car than make it lighter
Proper setup, perfect evo in my opinion.
+EVOLICIOUS smoking evo
Username checks out! 🤣
Aleksey's a very serious guy. With a neat EVO.
+Bruno Oliveira "of course"
Naw he is a cornball
That bukakke canyon road is pretty nice
Lol
not like Mt Akina though, right?
+Nik Brudar Ima nas :D
A kdo kej ve kje se fura narod kej pr nas?
Sm že mal naveličan solo vožnje...
+Nik Brudar noup, croatia :)

You can tell this guy knows what he's doing. Stock turbo, clean car, engine bay, small wheels, SORTED suspension. The ergonomics look a little tight for Matt, getting down to the shifter.
he definitely knew how to sort it out. after 10 years though I'd bet this guy has ran all sorts of setups to find and make the perfect car.
+smgs921 thanks guys. Really only had three setups. Stock, then mostly a street suspension and interior and this was the third and final setup. With the wealth of information around for these cars I never felt like a I was shooting in the dark.
My 03 Evo 8 has 161,000 miles and it still pulls so hard, 4g63 engines are actually very reliable.
+luis velasquez mitsi got it right with the 4G motors, i have a 4g93 in my lancer and i beat it to hell every day, even with the oil light coming on under corners or brakes. shes still killin
+ROBtimesTEN lol how dare you compare a 4g93 to a 4g63
aww come on mate, shes only a lancer coupe, has some get up when it only weights around a metric tonne (bout 2200 pounds)
+luis velasquez I have a '95 Evo 3, 21 years old, done compression test yesterday and it's like new :) Stock engine.
That's sick! im planning on getting a e85 tune, hopefully my engine doesn't blow up.
This is one of those reality check wake up videos that prove how less is more. A simple clean setup that can kill most cars on demand. Usable power, functional mods, tasteful exterior...This one is perfect!
definition of a sleeper, boi. they are the best!
Man be quiet
This guy has a very reserved yet badass vibe to him.
Finally.
A guest that is knowledgeable about his car to a very high level.
It was a pleasure listening to this guy and even learned a few things.
Gotta get me some of that brake fluid~!
Thank you! It is a magical fluid.
heelandtoemotorsports.com/products/torque-rt700-brake-fluid
Thanks for the link sir.
You have an amazing stable, and obviously some amazing skills.
Truly wish I had your level of craftmanship.
Evo reviews are the best!
I feel so involved with it just by watching... the mic captured the sound nicely!
I love all the notes about how good the suspension setup is.
Now that looks like a proper Evo!
I like how this guy knows so much about his car.
Travis Cordero it's important to know what you drive and dump tons of money into. It also helps when you build something yourself.
Metalution no doubt.
Wow that was a great episode ! Thank you! Almost refreshing not to hear 500hp EVO again with this problem and that problem ... Love how he was happy with his set up and a wonderful set up at that kudos to owner!
I love the sound of this car.
Thanks you!
nice clean evo, evos dont have problems when you service them and dont beat the piss out of them. alexi looks super nervous having someone else drive his car lmao
You are not wrong. Not many have driven my car. I drive my car like it was meant to be for the 110k miles that are on it. I just service it on time and give it the attention that all cars should receive.
+Metalution nice!
For me, I would never let anybody drive my car.
+Christusolus normally I don't. But I watched enough one takes to know that Matt is very respectful of the cars he drives. At the end of the day I am glad I got to share my experience with the rest of the world through his eyes.
+Metalution thank you for sharing your build with us so we day dreamers can appreciate it. From someone who has no choice but to do all the work on my own bucket (lancer gts) mass respect for putting that beast together!
Aleksey did this car right! It's definitely the best Evo I've seen in a very long time.
This is one of the best drives and reviews I've seen in awhile. Awesome video.
Finally a real ass nigga!!!! Finally someone told the truth about the hp numbers. dude said 320hp with full bolt ons including cams... All these other lames from the other vids would of claimed 500hp... RESPECT
I agree 100%!! Especially the guy with the 2016 STI video saying 380wtq with only turboback and intake. I own a 15 WRX stage 2 plus and pushing 346wtq with 318whp. But thats about as high as they go without going E85. Either way love for the EVO's!
+krinkin99 Thank man appreciate the luv... Subby luv here too man.
+krinkin99 That guy said he was going to post a dyno chart but he never did...
+AD if he did it would be about 30hp shy. Every tuner it different and some are better than others but COBB is a pretty conservative tuner. I would know. Great products but more on the safe side (which is not a bad thing).
+krinkin99 on a real mustang dyno it probably wouldn't break 300s tbh...
Great video, love watching the Evo's
Love watching a properly set up and modded Evo IX tear up a canyon! Great job Aleksey!
Thank you!
Well done this Evo, even the engine bay was so sorted and clean, good color for it as well.
Thank you. A clean engine bay is a must!
Well done , love onetakes. You keep making them, and I'll keep watching them. thanx guys....
Nice review as ever...greetings from Italy Matt!!
Sensational setup. Stock turbo Evo 9, plus MIVEC, plus the right bolt ons makes for an incredible power band :)
always a pleasure seeing something done right
Definitely perfect example of “less is more”. Nice and simple, i like
very nicely sorted. One that doesn't rub, what a breath of fresh air
This was actually very similar to my build, loved it. Glad to see you enjoying it.
Love this car, perfect Evo build!
Nearly impossible to find a clean or close to stock Evo IX for sale nowadays.
I like this car. It's ready for the track, but doesn't seem to want to kill you. Cars done right and something I'd try and go for is I had one.
Beautiful Evo... I'm glad to hear the owner drives it everywhere, these should be driven and enjoyed... I see more Evos on the street than I do DSM's lol... Still, gotta love our 4g63 bretheren
Such an awesome car - very cool that he's got a unique build that he's done himself! And he's got a 323 for a DD which is rad.
This video really warms my heart.
It feels like the perfect evo setup but I wouldn't be able to daily drive this thing. Perfect track car, no doubt. Amazing.
Thank you! As much as I like driving this car it's just too much for most people to DD.
+Metalution Yeah don't get me wrong though. If I had an evo, I would try to make it just like yours; for the track. Good luck with the evo. You have one hell of a setup.
Owner Was not given enough Credit. Fist car that I've enjoyed knowing the owner did all his research. Matt needs to hire this Guy.😎
Looks like a very very well sorted evo. And Matt you'd be surprised on an Evos reliability. They're extremely reliable cars when treated right
+Luke Kindred You're right. The actual drivetrain is very reliable. Car might not be very refined in stock form, but Mitsubishi sure got the 4G63 right.
Finally a respectable Evo IX on this channel.
These never get old
The torque RT700 fluid is brilliant on track. Torque actually closed its doors but the same formula can be found in prospeed brake fluid which Pegasus racing has in stock. I searched for weeks to find it after torque closed.
Jeff Engstrom Prospeed is also on thin ice last time I talked to the owner. I hope they stick around and make another batch.
Are they just not selling enough of it?
Jeff Engstrom poor business operations.
Aleksey you have a very cool car ... I'd watch out cuz i'm pretty sure Matt wants to buy your car LooooL .... I like how you evolved the car over the years and got to this sweet spot... Well done amigo!
Thank you.
It was a clear path as soon as I started to hit the track.
Matt has a bunch of interesting cars in his stable to keep his hands off my EVO. :)
Well congrats on finding that good balance, very nice car! Matt's a great guy, but like all car guys always looking for another pony for the stable ;) Great Video!
+Metalution do you have an instagram? I'd like to follow up and see posts of your evo! Beautiful.

+snowmanx831 thank you. Here you go.
beautiful car. don't ever let it go.
This car is sick, This is a true tuner! Props to this man!
Early morning uploads are the best. Coffee? How about car videos for breakfast!
Eliciting that giggle from Matt at 11:47 is the dream of every one take car owner
This is the Dream Car right here. Well done!
What a great car, doesn't need 800hp. Good work there.
Aftermarket shifters on DSMs and Evos are for people who are to poor to actually mod their car properly.
All the SSKs made for them are worse than the factory shift on shift feel, popout, and grind. My 2g had one on it for 2 years when I bought it, my shift cables broke after about 2 weeks of me waiting to find a stocker.
The best thing to do is install solid shifter base bushes, and for dsms you can use skateboard bearings in the cables. I think evos have a real bushing option for the cables.
These are a great idea Matt, keep up the videos!
Best car yet .. Matt the audio balance is broken, you are on the left channel only
Awesome build. I cross shopped this car with an s2k back in '07. Completely different cars to compare, but both great driver's cars.
ayowser01 would love an s2k myself. Very good cars indeed.
+1 For an amazing setup. Don't see too many Evos setup like this. Nah, let's slam our cars on their nuts and drag that shit to the local meets so we can look pretty while we park.
I feel your pain man. Evo is built for racing not scraping.
I can really tell you're care for us viewers
one of best cars on one take.
nice car, set up, color, perfect
Thanks man!
How the mighty have fallen, poor Mitsubishi.
Indeed 😞
+GT7786 Now they are all about that 76hp Mirage. lol.
Evo X got way too heavy. It weighs close to a GTR: 3527lbs vs 3840lbs, so that's 92% of the GTR's weight but has like half the power.
Lol mans roasted his tow hitch 😂😂😂, idk what’s more badass the evo or the owner ? 🤔 such a clean, simple build 👍🏻
Refreshing to see one of these that isn't boosted to kingdom come. Really goes to show how much, good suspension, brakes, and weight reduction can transform a car and make the most out of its power. (not that 300+whp is something to scoff at)
Now thats a nice car and great review. The Evo is a great platform when setup correctly. Matt, If you are ever come to Florida take my Evo 9 for a spin! Its setup very similar for street and road course duty but makes twice the power.
Good morning smoking tire fans.
Right back atcha!
+Bruh bruh
+Scooby blue Hey nice car! ;)
+Tyler Dowd Thanks yours is nicer. You earned a subscriber.
Aleksey's first true smile at 5:20!!! And I thought it wasn't possible...
Lol. I don't just hand out smiles everywhere I go. :)
+1 for getting video of this specific car and maybe driver one take track
god dam... i just sold my evo today... hngggggggggggggg
+Elwyn L My condolences :(
And you are planning to get another one right???
lol
+MrRarekiller10 not sure yet .. sitting on it for now. was tossing up a 135i or m3.. but still undecided
Elwyn L Save up for an M3 I would say, N54 problems are far too common.
Matt you are amazing keep making these videos !
Another dream car! Damn that was nice.
That is a dialed Evo. Soooo clean!
excellent representation of the evo
wow within the first minute you can tell this thing is special and the drive is just different than others. Wheres this guy wheel well? Or does he have a build thread? Would like to know the details..camber, spring rate and wheels? He seems chill and very knowledgeable. Now I want to trade my MK7 GTI for an Evo. lol Nice video!
Good afternoon smoking tire, well sorted car.
Wow, I really like this car too! Looks like a go cart, really fast to just zip around in!
Beautiful evo build!!
Great review man, thumbs up
Hey Matt, I'm not trying to sound annoying but I have a little critique for your audio. Have you considered of upping the voice audio before you start the car when you're just talking to whoever you're with. I've notice for the past couple episodes that the audio is a little quiet. I'm not trying to sound like some guy who knows everything on the Internet, it's just a little quiet to me that's all. I'm on my phone outside and I can't hear it too well. Has anyone else mentioned this?
+Big Mike I agree. When I watch in the cafeteria in school I barely hear anything.
This video was edited six weeks ago. All the audio issues have been sorted between when this video was done and the videos I shot after it
I cant wait to see that black Saleen that was parked behind the evo. I just sold my silver one after 9 1/2 years, and cried for two days.
So clean!
Hell yeah. This guy's doing it right. 👍
The stereo channels are the wrong way... just letting the internet know. Nice car, nice vid.
Evos are amazing cars. I owned a IX as well from 2008-2011 and only issue I had was I was burning clutches from track days and bad gear synchro and the dealer repaired the synchro for free. Evos are great and the IX IMO is the best model to date for the US that is. Mine was making 388whp and 353wtq on the stock turbo.
Wade Hartwick sounds like you had a winner on your hands. I have over 115k miles on my car and trans has no issues. First clutch change was at 60k miles and I recently replaced the exedy 4 puck for a comp clutch because the exedy had too heavy of a pedal for no reason. It's all in how you treat and maintain your car. If you take your evo drag racing you will ruin it because it was not designed to drag race.
As cold as Kimi Raikkonen.. Great Evo dude
Power to weight is so important, and it seems that all people think about is power.
no a TGV train went 550 kph / almost 350mph and weighs about 300 tons so it's all about power.
weight only comes into play when talking about girls.
Wow great job on your Lan Evo.
Loving the evo man. #LifeGoals
Glad you like it. Thank you!
Yes been waiting for this!!!
It seems like hes in the minority by going for ultimate track car. All suspension, steering, and brake mods. And it just goes to show you that you don't need to automatically throw a big turbo on it. Im sure this car has less lag and is a better overall car than 90% of all the other modded evo's out there.
I like the stock appearing engine bay. Stock turbo even with the stock turbo heat shield. With proper tuning and fueling, 320awhp is all you need to have a great handling and fun car.
Weight reduction also plays a huge role in all of this. Its a sacrifice in comfort and noise im sure, but just look out well fine tuned and sorted the car is with 100 less hp than most other evo's & STi's. I'm very impressed!!
I'm assuming that you're wearing the harness as a jockstrap because it's set for 'svelte' as you put it +TheSmokingTire ?
The lap belts were set to skinny and I couldn't adjust them enough
+TheSmokingTire Actually Matt you look a bit lighter.
+lic2kil007 my weight fluctuates up to 20 lbs on a weekly basis
+Ps Buddha - he said they're Feel.
that belt placement does NOT look comfortable. u didn't have to put ur man bits through that for our dumb asses
That thing is fast as fuck, he's carrying so much speed
what a sweet evo! i would own it like that
Finally a well sorted Evo. Seems like the previous ones all had some sort of corners cut. And the rubbing, dont even need to be reminded of the rubbing. I don't get how people can drive a car that rubs.
i accidentally left my computer on all day. just got home from work and I ogt from the newest One Take to this... #HiMatt
the only channel i watch that i always have to adjust my audio
the guy is awkward on camera, but thats a fkin awsome car ! good job with the mods, nice ride
Thank you!
awesome sound
That evo is legit!
Finally a proper evo 9
