    Bought a T14s Gen1a from lenovo a few month ago (no Gen 2 as of yet here). I went overboard and fully spec'd it, and it's a pleasure to use.

    Aside from the Thunderbolt difference (which I wouldn't care a lot because there seems to be potential for a screw-up like the T480s), I feel like this is one of the very few cases where the AMD Ryzen Mobile chips were taken seriously, and not as a cheaper, lesser alternative like other OEMs (*ahem* DELL) tend to portray them as.

    • @LaptopRetrospective
      @LaptopRetrospective  2 года назад

      Yeah it made the choice between them so hard I considered options further a field.

    As recently-launched thinkPad, T14s is quite incredible (eventhough I prefer regular T14 just for removable RAM stick)

    • @LaptopRetrospective
      @LaptopRetrospective  2 года назад +1

      The T14s is essentially a X13 in a T series housing as well, same HMM.

    • @tedarmavan
      @tedarmavan 2 года назад +1

      And alas, for T14 gen 3 AMD only, Lenovo decide to remove RAM slot, so it's soldered (Intel variant still have 1 RAM slot + soldered)

    I just bought an X13 Gen 2 with the carbon fiber lid. Honestly it just feels like a budget X1 Carbon. Ended up paying 750 USD for a 1185G7 + 16gb model.

    • @LaptopRetrospective
      @LaptopRetrospective  2 года назад +2

      Woah, that's some serious gear. What resolution is the screen? I assume the carbon fibre lid includes touch?

    • @henryatkinson1479
      @henryatkinson1479 2 года назад +2

      @@LaptopRetrospective Its the base panel (300 nit, no touch), but I swapped in a carbon lid for about 50 USD (came from China). Direct replacement, nothing else changed. I'm waiting for the X13 Gen 3 to come out with its superior WUXGA panels, since all of the nicer X13G2 panels are either higher res (which I don't need at 13.3 inches) or have privacy guard (I like high viewing angles).

    You gave AMD 2 points for the wireless card. 1 point for the card choices and 1 point for it not being soldered. 😁

    Thank you for a very informative video!
    Anyhow, I'm still torn between T14s gen 2 and X1 carbon/nano. I love the fact that T14s can house AMD ryzen chip which runs cooler than Intel one. T14s gen 2 also has a bit nicer keyboard (comparable to that of X1 carbon gen 8, I believe). On the other hand, I'm afraid that I would miss the bells & whistles of X1 series (usually better display, touchpad, microphone, build quality and case material etc).
    By the way, I've noticed many people complained about a few of quirks on their T14s (AMD variant), including significant battery draining during sleep, a jumpy touchpad after the machine wakes up, and sometimes the laptop cannot be shut down properly. Probably those have something to do with quality control or software optimisation.

      The nicer screen options at the time was a massive draw for me. Definitely hear you on that.

    It's not clear why this video showed up in RUclips search results for "lenovo thinkpad t16". And only today, even though it's from March 29, and I've been searching for this query every day for many previous days.

    • @LaptopRetrospective
      @LaptopRetrospective  2 года назад +1

      One doesn't need to go retro to get socketed components but we do need to look in places we haven't traditionally looked. The "cheaper" lines of machines have more upgradability currently.
