    I am from the Netherlands, and we are a very multi-cultural country, growing up my friends or classmates from example, Surinam, Morocco, Turkey, Antilles, China always made fun of the Dutch cuisine and this is a common thing for every Dutch person I believe. So us Dutch people never really dared to be proud of our food cause we are always being mocked for having no flavor. My honest opinion is that our snacks are amazing, but the main dishes are a bit on the basic side. Which is not a bad thing at all. But we were always told we and our food are boring.

      Thanks for the insight - I think food in Northern Europe tends to follow similar ingredients and most likely it's because of the cold weather and not being able to grow "exotic" ingredients, and historically periods of poverty and surviving off the land. I like a good simple dish with mashed potatoes in the winter :)

    • @KarinKuiper
      @KarinKuiper 5 месяцев назад +1

      Well, it's not new. I know quite a few people who do this. I think, it started with Choba ( margarine mixed cocoa) and cheap hagelslag, to make both taste more chocolaty. Quality hagelslag really doesn't need anything but real butter and a regular piece of bread (not toasted). Better yet, a 'kadetje', a fluffy white flour bun.

    1:40 Right amount of sprinkles, correct type of bread, and it seems like you've used dark chocolate sprinkles. Very nice, very nice.

    Yuck.. Nutella and hagelslag. Nutella is soooooo sweet already. Nutella is oil and sugar (and a little hazulnut). Organic hazelnut spread with little sugar is much much better. BTW Nutella used to have less sugar, but sugar is so cheap so they changed the recipe.

    Patatje oorlog(war) with no onions? That is not complete, you missed an extra dimension.
    Glad you did not have the stroopwafel with add ons, it is not supposed to be that way.
    ps. never seen hagelslag on nutella before, I always ate those seperate.

  • @spoenk7448
    @spoenk7448 7 месяцев назад

    I can't believe you had Nutella and hagelslag. Nutella is such a disappointing product. I don't understand its popularity to be honest.
    Also the bread you used seems fairly representative, but this type of medium shelf life bread is not very tasteful. Fresh bread with real butter and dark chocolate hagelslag is what's best in my opinion.
    Nutella tastes like puke, btw. I don't get why people even remotely enjoy it.

    Raw herring is something that a lot of people in Finland have on their Christmas tables, but also at the same time, it’s widely eaten during summer especially with new potatoes. 😂

  • @JelmerStienstra
    @JelmerStienstra Год назад +2

    2:53 that one is very very overpriced and by far not as good as a fresh normal plain stroopwafel at the (for example Albert Kuijp) market.
    So… don’t be sad ☺️
    7:38 In Amsterdam this - cutting it up the herring way - is the traditional way in other parts of NL grabbing by the tail is. At least that’s what a fish seller once told me..

    I went to Amsterdam a while back (around 2010) and I loved it! I remember an abundance of root vegetables and amazing cheese (I love the one with cumin seeds ❤), as well as dark/brown breads. I don’t remember why but both evenings I spent there we ended up having dinner in a great Portuguese restaurant 😂 the food was good, the waiters were friendly, shame I didn’t save the name. Anyway, next time I’ll look for traditional Dutch options, although for someone who doesn’t eat pork and doesn’t like raw fish that might be a challenge 😂

      Sorry for the late response - and thanks for sharing! I'll admit there are not many traditional Dutch food restaurants, but the one we went to in the video was amazing, they have vegetarian options like the veggie bitterballen and the casserole I had :)

    If you eat a slice of bread with hagelslag, put the hagelslag on just one side of the bread and then fold it, easier to hold, easier t eat, I can't stress this enough. No Dutch person eats a slice of bread with hagelslag the way it's eating in this video.
