"How're they all ripped? They're pilots." Exactly. They're pilots. You have to be in excellent shape to endure constant g-forces and still be able to perform. As for the birds, they are super dangerous especially around airports that are close to water. They are a form of FOD, foreign object damage/debris, and they can cause serious damage at speeds, plus one in the engine intake causes the accident you witnessed.
Actually there is a big difference between being ripped and being fit, i have known people who actually served in the US air force, one of them was texas national guard and while both of them were fit, they didn't look ripped. Because u don't need to be ripped or have an 8 pack to be fit
It's the exact same for Formula 1 drivers they got thickass necks to withstand up to 6Gs, now think about a Fighter Pilot needing to withstand over 8 or 9 times the force of gravity without g locking yourself.
Not all pilots are ripped 😂 in fact most of them dont have abs, there's a huge difference between rip and fit. Iron man is fit but hes not ripped like thor or captain america
This is still the best legacy sequel i've ever seen Fun Fact: Most of the plane shots are all real and the cast trained with a pilot to fly in real planes
If by "the plane shots are all real" you mean "there were two or more shots of real planes flying apart from each other at a safe distance and then digitally they were composited together to look like they were close to each other" then... yes. But if you're trying to say the risk-adverse Navy allowed multiple $50+ million dollar planes, multiple highly skilled pilots and passenger Tom Cruise to break every safety regulation in the book in order to make a movie then... no.
Actually yes they did if you watch the BT’s , you’ll see they put cameras in the plane for them to get the shots . They have to train like navy for the films
@@olaoluwaist Yes. The actors were in the back seats of real planes, but take for example the shot of Maverick zooming between the two student planes on day one of dog fighting school. They were not dozens or even a hundred feet apart. They were hundreds of feet apart, shot separately and then they were digitally composited to make it look like he zoomed between them. These shots are as "real" as Dumbledor's fight with Voldemort. Both scenes used real cameras and actors and the same amount of post-production VFX work.
@@KBTibbs You are correct. We have lots of evidence from fighter pilots who know the fighter pilots flying for the filming, as well as from the people actually doing the CGI for this movie. There are many shots of real planes, of the actors inside real planes included in the movie, but most of it is CGI and even the real shots are mostly CGI'd. Anyone wanting more info the RUclips channel of C.W. Lemoine, a fighter pilot with the callsign "Mover" has made many videos with lots of info on both Top Gun movies. He just did a video 3 days ago about the behind the scenes of the original Top Gun together with many pilots who flew for that movie!
@@KBTibbs While that’s kinda true, it’s also false. They didn’t splice separate footage of planes together, they actually did do a lot of ACM stunts with the cameras and a chase plane. They actually did rolling scissors with super hornets for one scene
In this movie, It was Val Kilmer's idea to bring back Ice but he also wanted to incorporate his Throat Cancer (he had it) on the character, so you see him typing the words out but then tries to speak... Also, the hug is real, it isn't scripted or rehersed. Oh, yeah, this isn't CGI, they had cameras on the cockpits of the jets as they're flying.
Do you know why Top Gun Maverick is nominated for best VFX at the oscars? Yes the flying is real, but there's a lot of CGI. They didn't fly under the bridges, the cobra dive isn't real, neither is the splitting of the pair during the the first training excercise, everything in the F14 is CGI as there are no flying F14's left in the world except for a few in Iran ... It's just a movie that does practical with VFX like it should be done.
@@renegato0789 Most of them are CGI. They had massive amounts of CGI in this movie. But yes, many of the in-plane shots are real. RUclipsr C.W. Lemoine, who is an actual fighter pilot has spoken to pilots in the movie and people who did CGI for the movie. You'll find lots of info on the background of the movie, and analysis from fighter pilots on his channel. Three days ago he even released a video where he had many fighter pilots who flew for the original Top Gun movie on as guests.
I only realized later that Maverick's solo run was even more impressive, he did it without the second plane painting a laser target. He had no targeting computer, just the Force.
Angelina you would have to be a big Top Gun fan to know Penny 😉 In Top Gun when the Squadron commander is chewing out Maverick and Goose before sending them to Top Gun he mentioned the flyovers and one Admirals daughter and Goose says Penny Benjamin. Then in the diner Carol (Meg Ryan) mentioned Penny Benjamin the admiral daughter.
@@jocax188723 He played his role as a navy admiral expertly. Flag / General officers don't flinch or blink in moments that would send most people to the ground covering their heads. With the amount of time it takes to reach flag officer rank (20+ years) they have pretty much seen and done it all.
When Coyote was passing out and you asked who was behind him, the answer is 'no one', one of the planes in each pair was a single-seater with only the pilot, and the other was a two-seater with pilot and a weapons sytstems officer in the back.
This was extremely well suited for the cinema. Anyone who didnt watch it there missed out. This is one of the top movies ever id say you should watch in the cinema. The sound with dolbey atmos was sooo immersing. I felt like everything was vibrating(well sound is viabrations but you know what i mean)
Seldom has a line in a movie nailed home the severity of the situation more than "One that their family will accept at the funeral." also Jon Hamm's voice breaking in that line @ 21:30 is everything
"It's what my dad woulda done" still gets me everytime. My new favorite movie. If it doesn't win Best Picture at Oscars I'll be mad. This movie has EVERYTHING. Such a cool Theater experience
If they ever show this in the theaters again, you gotta see it in IMAX and feel the sound of jets rattling the seats. I saw it 8 times with 7 different friends in tow (last time was with a friend who wanted to go again with his entire family). Great reaction. Helped me relive it like it was my first viewing. Keep up the fun reactions. 👍😊
@@chrishaselden I keep talking to my local theater workers and "suggesting" they do a double feature on an armed forces holiday of both the original Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick. I bet they'd sell out for whatever days they had it. 😁
Honestly I'd say D-Box was even better. Having the seat tilt as the plane does and feeling the vibrations of the flares popping off really made this movie pop
@@logandarklighter Agreed! In the last week of the theater presence, that was all that was available... it was more than enough... but I think the theater staff knew to turn up the volume just a smidge to rumble the audience just a little more. 🤣
Production wise: Tom Cruise flew a real fighter jet for some of the scenes. All of the actors flew in real stunt planes, all the while having to press record on cameras and make sure the shots were lined up, since you can't have a cameraman up there with you. It is insane what they went through!
No, Tom Cruise didn't fly a real jet, he, just like all the actors sat, in the back of the superhornets. The only scene where's he's flying himself is the P51 in the end sequence as it's his own aircraft. He does has a commercial jet license, but wasn't allowed to fly the baby hornet.
@@TRPLD yeah the reason they had them fly in the Super Hornets for the movie is specifically because they are the newest 2 seater jets, so the real actual pilots are sitting front seat flying, and the actors are in the rear set, pretending to fly, and shooting scenes lol
It looks so good because the actors were flying in the back seat of an F18 SuperHornet. So their reactions experiencing g-forces are as real as it gets. No CGI or green screens.
There is an asian female pilot too with the callsign called ''Halo'' in the team as well. You see her in the scene in the back behind the tables and in the teaching of dogflighing scene. Even in the beach scene with Phoenix.
As far as how they shot certain parts in 1 and 2... The pilots in the cockpit with scenery going by... They were in REAL jets. But they were in the back seat... Where Goose would sit. A real fighter pilot did the flying and the actors were in the back experiencing REAL G forces and such.
While I didn’t watch the first Top Gun film, I personally think that the sequel _Top Gun: Maverick_ is overall superior to the first Top Gun film and critics and fans wholeheartedly agree, because for one they made Maverick much more relatable than the first film and the chemistry and relationships he has with Rooster (Goose’s son), the other Pilot cadets, Jennifer Connelly’s character, Penny, and Iceman (Val Kilmer) made this worth the watch and on top of that the story, the music and the action scenes made this sequel superior than the first film. Even It was good to see this in theaters with my father and it was worth the watch. Thanks ANGELINA.
It was great to have Val Kilmer here since he has suffered from a condition that has affected his voice. It is one of the most warm moments. "The kid needs Maverick" is one of the best lines.
A few tidbits: -(Foreshadowing) In the first bar scene, Coyote covers Hangman’s eyes while playing darts and he still hits the bullseye. Rooster takes a blind shot at the end when the laser fails and he hits the bullseye. -(foreshadowing) Cyclone: “You did it by stealing a multimillion dollar military jet and flying it in such a manner that it may never be airworthy again.” Maverick finishes the mission by stealing the F-14 and it’s definitely not airworthy after it crashes on the deck of the aircraft carrier. -After Maverick jumps out of the window, Amelia is wearing a necklace with a red bead on her left side and a green bead on her right side, which corresponds to the navigation lights on an aircraft, as she’s giving advice to Mav. -When Mav and Rooster face off before the first flight, Phoenix is kneeling next to the nose landing gear watching them; as the testosterone flows, Phoenix’s tow bar has a hard-on. -Final kill count: Hangman: 2 Maverick: 5 Rooster: 3 (a helicopter, and he gets equal credit for Mav’s two kills.)
-(Foreshadowing) Penny in the bar: "Somehow you're back in a fighter plane with your tail on fire.".. then LITERALLY is in a fighter and gets hit by a missile which severs the tail and and lights it on fire. _(Foreshadowing) The scene where they're practicing bombing runs opens with a flock of birds leaving the ground. The scene ends with one of those birds geting sucked into Phoenix and Bob's engine. -(Foreshadowing?) H_ngM_n hits a bullseye with a dart after Coyote covers his eyes. So how did H_ngM_n manage to sneak up on an SU-57 and fire off a missile without the SU-57 knowing H_ngM_n was lighting him up with the F-18's fire control radar? Because H_ngM_n fired off a missile by eyeballing it, because he's THAT good.
There is a youtube video on how the actors were taught cinemtography. They are in the back seats acting as if they were flying. But also looking at the camera angles.
Same as you I wasn’t really a huge fan of the first movie so didn’t know what to expect for the second one. Saw it in theaters and it was pretty amazing, the sound especially was so epic
The emotion I felt watching this for the first time couldn’t compare to anything. I would give anything to have that experience again, and watching someone do that very thing is close enough for me
1. No it wasn’t a fan that pushed the gust of wind. It was an actual jet flying over. 2. The F-1&s are real. The actors are really in the planes. The actors are really acting while flying in the planes. 3. There are two BEHIND THE SCENES trailers which really show you how incredibly special this movie is because of how they filmed it!
The scene where the Darkstar flies over the Admiral (Ed Harris).....there was no fan used. The scene was shot with a real jet, so the compression wave, the vehicle shaking and the roof coming off is all real. Only things afterwards is the real jet was replaced by the CGI Darkstar.
PENNY: This was "the Admiral's Daughter" Meg Ryan mentioned in the Cafe in "Top Gun". This is the Second Movie were Tom plays a Navy Officer... that isn't thrilled with being on the water!
One thing to point out is that it is not a gas station but a entry point to the base where a navy MA (Master at Arms) is shown proper ID before anyone enters. MA's are the USN version of military police there is a brief scene of 2 escorting "Mavrick" to RADM. Cain's office when he returns to the base.
It wasn’t that they had one chance, but they damaged the hut so much they couldn’t do anymore takes, so it was a one take deal because of that, and it was perfect. Kudos to Ed Harris too, he took that blast like a mf’er.
Penny was the daughter of a Admiral that Maverick had a on again off again relationship with, she was mentioned at the beginning of the first top gun movie when the captain was talking about all the incidents that Maverick has gotten in trouble with where he took penny on a joy ride on his fighter without permission
The diner with the little kid in the beginning is right up the street from my house - Halfway House Cafe. They film everything there, including the famous Cindy Crawford Pepsi commercial from the 90’s. Also, the 33 rounds of ammunition left is a nod to the original Top Gun - 33 years since it came out.
My partner works on the planes at Edward's Airforce Base and for the airshow last year they had one of the plane props used for this movie (it's basically a shell that looks just like the real thing but the inside is pretty much empty. They did use real planes, too, though.
Tom Cruise designed a training regiment to get the cast in shape and it also included sticking them in an increasing sequence of powerful planes so they could act, fly and record themselves at the same time. The flight scenes were real and Top Gun pilots flew the cast around in the planes, except the P51 Mustang Propeller plane. That's Cruise's plane and he flies it himself. I laugh so hard every time I see Jianyu from Good Place just casually pop into the background with the other fighters! BTW Just in case because people keep questioning the plot: the USAF does have 5th gen fighters of their own, they're F22 Raptors (and I think F35s too) but they can't take off from aircraft carriers. F18s are 4.5 gen jets and they can take off from ships which is why the US Navy uses them for long range infiltration. The 5th gen enemies in this movie look like they used Sukhoi SU-57s but I haven't checked that online so don't take my word for it. The 'bag of ass' is a 4th gen f14 tomcat which was the kind they flew in the 1984 top gun movie
Yes the USAF has F-35s too, specifically the A variant, whereas the B and C variants are flown by the Marine Corps and Navy, the latter briefly seen during the opening scene on the carrier. The enemy 5th gen is indeed SU-57.
They addressed the use of F/A-18s instead of F-35s (the nave does have the capability to launch those off of ships) in Maverick’s initial briefing by the admiral. He said it would be ideal for F-35s but the gps those use wouldn’t work in the area due to interference from the mountains, I believe, and they would have trouble delivering their payload precisely without it. That leaves the F/A-18 as the only plane with enough speed and maneuverability along with the proper payload delivery systems to strike. F-22 is an air superiority fighter and not capable of ground attack missions, so even if they were capable of carrier launch they couldn’t fly this mission.
@@calibadgerdude6082The real reasons were: a) the F-35 wasn't operating off any U.S carriers yet when the filming took place b) it's got a load of secret tech in it c)F-35 is a single seat only, whereas F/A-18 has 2 seat models suitable for filming
Did you happen to catch the sneaky move Glenn Powell did with the jukebox. He did his own little easter egg tribute to the first movie and types in 86 in the song selection keypad. That was not caught till post production.
As for how they shot the jet scenes. They developed a new rig to put the camera in the cockpit and to make it feel like you were in there too so the shots of the pilots in the planes were actually shot in real F-18s
The dogfight football scene was filmed multiple times, with all of the actors/actresses being on a strict diet and exercise program during/part of production. At one point, they were tolding shooting for that scene was done, and they all went out to celebrate with tator tots, milkshakes, and beer. A day or two later, they were called back to reshoot that scene, and had to go back dieting. Lol
That said, physical fitness is important from what I've heard for military pilots (need to be able to handle those high speed moves), so them all being in great shape isn't that crazy an idea. :)
Some behind the scenes clips on the movie(talks about the actors needing to be able to operate the camera in the plane, very cool stuff): ruclips.net/video/yM389FbhlRQ/видео.html&t
The spin done by the opposing aircraft after the steal the F14 is a real maneuver. It's called the Kvochur Bell Maneuver Many aircraft can do it, but because of the way the Russian Su-57 is designed, it can perform it exceptionally well. In fact the US's best aircraft the F35 is slightly outclassed by the Su-57. The F35 favors stealth, and plans to take down targets before they know they were there, the Su-57 was built to be a dogfighter, and can out manuver the F35.
I worked on this film. Mostly in the later parts of production and reshoots. My company worked the entire project from start to finish. We provided wardrobe, property and limited technical advising. I can’t leave photos here, but we have all the uniforms and flight gear we sourced and made for the film. Including Maverick’s jackets. This was the project of the lifetime.
Angie, I love this movie! I cried the first time, almost the second time, and cried 3rd, the 4th and 5th time. I’m a man! Penny is the character that was mentioned in top gun, remember the line "and one admiral's daughter" then goose says "Penny Benjamin" that is her in this movie. Fun fact, all actors did a training course made by Tom cruise to pilot the f18s. IMAX cameras were installed inside the aircraft and the actors had to do editing, filming and makeup themselves. The tag team football scene was filmed 7 times.
For your shirt - turn it inside out - get scissors, fabric glue, and a then elastic band - cut two strips of elastic strips roughly the length of the should strap - glue one end to the back of the shoulder strap & let it dry - After it’s had time to dry slightly stretch the elastic& glue the other end of the elastic to the other side of the shoulder strap ( don’t over stretch it) & let it dry - turn shirt inside out. Now the elastic will keep the shoulder straps from falling.
You should definitely watch some BTS videos on Maverick, it was pretty incredible how they shot the movie. Just in general the cinematography was amazing, even just the quality of the 'romantic' arc of the movie, but the in cockpit filming was more of a technological step forward. Previous to this the only compact enough solutions were 1080p and not 4k cinema cameras. They did however shoot on Sony Venice 4k cinema cameras, which typically could not fit in a cockpit, especially with the constraints of the safety systems not being impeded (ejection seat, etc.). Which also to talk about, there was so much done practically in this movie, the actors spent a lot of time being flown in real F-18's. But back to the cameras haha, Sony developed a way to separate the sensor from the rest of the camera after consulting with directors (like James Cameron on Avatar 2). So the lens and sensor block are a single unit connected to the processor hardware via an extension cable, which makes an extremely compact package as the camera bodies can be mounted elsewhere. As the actors were alone in the air they also had to be trained on operating the cameras, along with how to pull series G's! Such an awesome movie though in all aspects, probably one of my favourites from last year.
i watched the original a few weeks ago and it is kind of bad. The dialouge was really cringeworthy most of the time. I've read a review somewhere which said: the good scenes are really good and the bad scenes are relentlessly bad ;D
They shot it by shooting it for real. Even the shot in the beginning with the Dark star take off was shot for real with a different aircraft. The only generated shots were the explosive ones and reaching Mach 10.
One of the VFX team did an interview with a RUclipsr (who is a former US Navy and USAF pilot) about 6 months ago, he was forced to take it down a few days later by Paramount executives, but in that interview they discussed how much was real and how much was CGI, and it’s amazing how much CGI was used considering Paramount’s claims that they used very little: All aerial shots of Darkstar are CGI. The ground shots are real, Lockheed Martin had been developing the Darkstar project, and had built the frame and cockpit ready for filming. Rumour is Darkstar will indeed be a real plane eventually. I say rumour as they refuse to confirm or deny it. All onboard shots of the cast in the cockpits are real, but any time another aircraft is in frame, it has been added digitally, 9:31 is a great example of that as a plane doesn’t fly like that. The flyover for Iceman’s funeral is CGI. The shots of the 4 planes flying through the snowy canyon was a single plane digitally replicated 3 more times. The bridge is CGI. The helicopter is CGI. The missiles and explosions are CGI. The F-14 vs Su-57 scenes are all CGI. The ground scenes for the F-14 are real up to the take-off, apart from the engines starting, they shipped the display Tomcat from San Diego Air and Space Museum, which was stripped of its engines when it was retired, to location. The boat scene is real, and when Maverick slips, that wasn’t scripted, Jennifer Connolly asking Tom Cruise if he’s ok was her genuine reaction.
@@CoffeeMatt10 the funeral flyover is real, just 4 F/A-18' in standard tight fingers 4 into a missing man. The 4 ship low on the deck was 4 EA-18G's if it was CGI it would have been E's and F's. Maverick rolling on top of Rooster was a composite of 3 shots. Them into the barber pole is CGI. The F-14 v SU-57 was flown by 2 pilots in F/A-18's and the digital aircraft put in post. CGI error when Maverick rolls the -14 the ailerons move. The -14 does not have ailerons. CGI error #2, -14 wings are swept back when they should be swinging open.
A few awesome production facts: All of the actors actually rode in the jets during shooting (obviously a real F-18 pilot was flying the thing for them). In the shot of Darkstar taking off, apparently the roof of the shed actually popped off like that! They had an F-18 do the takeoff for real and composited Darkstar into the shot. Tom Cruise actually owns and flies the P-51 we see in the movie.
Angelina.... You probably missed it. I did too on the first time I watched it. Maverick's history with Penny Benjamin is mentioned in TOP GUN 1. It was in the scene where the Commander of The Aircraft Carrier is chewing Maverick and Goose out after the Mig incident when Cougar gets a panic attack and Maverick disobeys an order to help him. Commander: "... With a history of high speed passes... Over 5 air control towers, and one Admiral's Daughter!" *Goose turns to Maverick and whispers* Goose: "Penny Benjamin..." The history between these two is noted and from the interactions between them here in this movie I believe it wasn't just that one time.
A bird strike is exactly what it sounds like. Running into a bunch of birds in air. They can get in an engine or something and take a plane down. My partner (airforce veteran) Says they put bird stickers on the planes each time they get a bird strike 😅
The pilots in the movie were actually in the jets but were sitting back seat to real fighter pilots. So a lot of the maneuvers they were actually in the plane
Foreign Object Debris is a reality of flying in the air with the birds. In the 90s a US Air Force E-3 sentry crashed because a flock of birds flew into the engine just seconds into flight. It crashed and exploded on impact.
penny is the admiral's daughyter mentioned in the first top gun movie. also in regaards to how they filmed this, there is a video or atleast there used to be a video where they highlighted what they had to go through to film it like going to the airforce swimming pool to learn the proper procedure if they crash in water etc. and how they slowly upgraded from a propellar plane to jetplane and finally how each actor/actress had to learn how to shoot the camera learning cinematocracy etc.
The maneuver starts as a "Pugachev cobra", but it looks more like "Kvochyur's bell" and ended with a "falling leaf". Seen an SU-33 do it at an air show. Not sure how useful it would actually be in combat though because the aircraft loses pretty much ALL of it's energy when they do it.
@Rs Rt it's not. Any decent fighter pilot following behind it would have selected guns pushed rudder and sawed the SU-57 in half with 20mm cannon rounds. In DCS, the F-14's counter is to go vertical and loop back down and gun the SU as it tries to speed up to maneuvering speed. You better have your timing right and have mastered flying the beast at below 350 knots at 5+g, cause there is little to no room for errors during this maneuver.
3:08 that shot was actually a real shot and it was a one take because the gust of wind was real and the prop hut on the left actually broke and the shot was just perfect so they felt no need to do it again.
The roof blowing off the hut at the start was unplanned. It happened and they kept it. The actor that just stood there and took the full force there is a fuckin beast.
Yayy loved this movie! It was a phenomenal theater watch that I watched before watching the original, and I believe there was a little snippet before the movie started where tom cruise explained he wanted to make it feel super authentic and thus opted to use real fighter jets, which just adds so much to how i perceive the movie! it had everything really
90% of the time, at a diner, if a kid wants cereal, and the diner charges for it, that diner shuts down very quickly... If you charge for cereal for a kid, you gotta be put out of business... But, if you're an adult eating cereal... You should be charged twice for the most expensive meal... Agree, disagree, I don't care... That's how I would run MY diner!
all the flying scenes are practical stunts. They had real pilots flying real aircraft. The actors were placed in back seats, in charge of starting cameras and performing their rolls with as little error as possible. So impressive
@@pigs18 Yes you’re right. Some stuff was edited together. But each clip was an actual pilot doing the actual maneuver. If that makes sense. But yes you’re right some stuff was edited together
It's a little hard for me to explain, but to me after watching both movies I think the character, Maverick, best represents the soul of these movies, in the first one both Maverick and the movie give off this big high octane energy, cockiness and larger than life feel, with the second movie again both Maverick and the movie feel more mature, grown, and in place of the cockiness, a feeling that says both know who and what they are, a good example would be the beach scene from both movies, the first is fun, but it doesn't really do anything for the movie other than to provide fan service, take it out and nothing is really lost, but in the second movie the beach scene has a purpose, as Maverick says to create a team and bound amongst the young pilots (and show fan service).
Not Ange coming for that kid in the diner 😂 Great commentary Ange and yep I agree it’s better then the original. For some of the shots I know the cast learnt how to fly and operate the cameras at the same time
This has gotta be the best sequel ever. 99% of the flying shots are real (minus the ones that break the 500ft bubble), and Tom Cruise had the cast undergo the naval and flight training before production. They even made new IMAX cameras just for this movie so that they could film the actors in the cockpit. They all had to operate the cameras themselves. While the final mission did have some questionable tactics to help with the story (like why didn't they just hit the SAM sites with a second wave of missiles; Mav could have shot the Su-57 when it pulled the cobra, especially with how experienced he is, but whatever), the effort the cast and crew put in for this was top notch, and I think everyone can agree it shows in the end result.
Enough people have already mentioned that the actors are often filmed in the back seat of an actual F-18. The jamming capabilities of the enemy installation were a plot device to explain why they weren't going in newer generation aircraft which are all single seaters.
As an old guy, same age as TC I can tell you as a young soldier stationed in Okinawa (Torii Station) in the early 80's I met a lot of fighter pilots from Kadena AB and I have to say they were definitely in shape.
Production facts: All the low level flying was done by a former Blue Angel with the actors in the back seat. All the higher level scenes were flown by an Actual Top Gun graduate. Certain scenes were filmed separately then spliced together(When Maverick sliced between two F-18's, twice). The Navy would NEVER allow them to film that as seen in the movie.
13:52 being a fighter pilot is extremely hard physically and mentally. Its like a racing driver all of the g forces make you need to be fit and strong hence why the airforce has some of the best food (im not sure about naval aviators but i assume they get good food too)
In this movie, the backstory between maverick and rooster is that rooster was goose’s(maverick’s former wingman and best friend)’s son. Goose died when flying with maverick even tho it was not maverick’s fault, rooster dosent think that way. Also the pilots are ripped because you have to be fit and strong to fly a fighter jet🫡
Great reaction! The planes were filmed separately and joined with film magic for the movie, but notice that the actors in the cockpits who had to film their own shots always looked out of the correct side of the canopy. That's good directing!
"Why are they so ripped?" In the military, officers are required to hold higher PT qualifications than the enlisted. THEN, there's the increased PT levels required to be a pilot, then yet more requirements for being Top Gun, and then on top of THAT, we've got them all doing 200 pushups a day cause Mav keeps shooting them down.
3:07 They used a real F/A-18 Super Hornet for that shot and most other shots in this movie. There is very little cgi in this movie compared to other movies of the last 15 years.
"Is he gonna be good too?!" It helps if you're piloting a type of 5th generation fighter plane that has hyper-maneuverability, as some Chinese and Russian planes have been designed to achieve. Since it was decided that even Tom Cruise couldn't pull off stealing one of those to use in the movie - the cartwheel enemy fighter plane was simulated in CGI.
Nooo! You took away that one (brilliant) line from the little kid!! 🥺 Him saying "Earth" was such a great moment! And you cruelly took that one line away from _a child_ just to scold him for wanting Cheerios when his parents clearly had made him come with them to the diner! 😭😭
@@toddlower5546 Oh, I was wondering (it's been such a long time) what fruit loops looked like again, and assumed that those had to be fruit Cheerios as I could only remember the shape of Cheerios and assumed others didn't have the same shape!
“And despite your best efforts, you refuse to die” = Pete Mitchell is the reincarnation of Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise’s character in _The Last Samurai_ ).
It wasn't a giant fan that created the gust of wind when the Dark Star was taking off. It was a Blue Angels pilot in an F-18 and it actually blew the roof off the security guard shack. There are interviews on RUclips with the pilot and the directors talking about it.
3:17 Ed Harris actually stood there as an ACTUAL F/A-18 fighter jet flew over him, so that's why the dust curls look so good; it was made with an actual plane, and then the VFX team replaced the fighter with the Darkstar afterwards. Sidenotes: They didn't expect the roof of the shack to go either, and that was such an amazing detail that they made sure to keep it. Also, Ed Harris, what a boss. Stares down a fighter jet for the shot to work.
Definitely one of the best sequels of all time. Amazing movie with so many good scenes, and just so entertaining and the jet combat scenes were spectacular.
A lot of people don't realise that the first act, where he reaches mach 10 is a set up for the later scene where he shows them it's possible to fly the mission parameters that was set.
Test pilots are supposed to break the plane ;-) A goose took down a giant passenger plane just after it took off from NYC ... the pilot remained calm, brought the plane around and landed it in the Hudson River. The only pilot who has ever been successful doing this with a passenger plane. All passengers and crew got safely off the plane.
She asked why they’re all ripped if they’re pilots💀as a pilot, especially the jets that they’re flying, you have to be in extremely good shape and health to be able to handle the forces and stay conscious.
“how are they all ripped, they’re pilots!!” i’m a flight attendant and even though they’re not pilots in f-18s, even commercial pilots have to hit the gym a lot because you have to be fit to do this job as it is hard on the body. They’re not all ripped like that of course (mostly bc damn do they eat a lot!), but no wonder the pilots in this movie are ripped, they’re pilots in the military hahaha also, birdstrikes are very common sadly :( it makes me sooo sad for the birdies, but yeah it happens a lot and it’s dangerous bc it can blow up an engine. But although they’re common, they don’t always break the engines thankfully. However they damage planes a lot wherever they hit and we usually have to land asap to be safe.
Snow scenes were filmed up in Lake Tahoe, CA. My friends and I were up there during a weekend when you could hear the jets flying. Couldn't see them but they were flying all day back in 2018 or 19, can't remember the exact date. The locals we talked to never saw the actors but they were up there for quite a while.
Movie was the best sequel to the first. If I could recommend the movie "Sully" with main actor Tom Hanks. That will show you how annoyingly deadly burd strike can be.
Biggest bird I've seen ingested was a pelican. Fortunately most of it ended up in the nose wheel well, which is a smell you don't get to forget.
@@jaredragland4707 Yup, I lost an engine to a seagull on take off. Instant fried chicken smell.
This is still the best legacy sequel i've ever seen
Fun Fact: Most of the plane shots are all real and the cast trained with a pilot to fly in real planes
The exterior shots of the planes are 100% CGI
@@chrisastin184 not all of them
@@renegato0789 Most of them are CGI. They had massive amounts of CGI in this movie. But yes, many of the in-plane shots are real.
RUclipsr C.W. Lemoine, who is an actual fighter pilot has spoken to pilots in the movie and people who did CGI for the movie. I only realized later that Maverick's solo run was even more impressive, he did it without the second plane painting a laser target. He had no targeting computer, just the Force.
The Force is strong with Maverick. And unlike some Jedi he doesn't try to murder his own students. 🤣
As does Rooster in the actual mission in the closing acts..
He had a targeting pod on his port side
He did have one he just had to line it up while also maintaining the correct pitch by himself
He did have a tpod, note the little grey screen
Angelina you would have to be a big Top Gun fan to know Penny 😉 In Top Gun when the Squadron commander is chewing out Maverick and Goose before sending them to Top Gun he mentioned the flyovers and one Admirals daughter and Goose says Penny Benjamin. Then in the diner Carol (Meg Ryan) mentioned Penny Benjamin the admiral daughter.
Angelina Is going the Danger Zone

When Coyote was passing out and you asked who was behind him, the answer is 'no one', one of the planes in each pair was a single-seater with only the pilot, and the other was a two-seater with pilot and a weapons sytstems officer in the back.
This was extremely well suited for the cinema. Anyone who didnt watch it there missed out. This is one of the top movies ever id say you should watch in the cinema. The sound with dolbey atmos was sooo immersing. I felt like everything was vibrating(well sound is viabrations but you know what i mean)
Seldom has a line in a movie nailed home the severity of the situation more than "One that their family will accept at the funeral."
also Jon Hamm's voice breaking in that line @ 21:30 is everything
Hell yeah. On both, hell yeah.
The... things we do.
Also, "Don't tell me. Tell his family."
Oh man, I wish there had been an IMAX near me, would have loved to see it in that.

It's one of the biggest hits of the year, $1.4 billion dollars and is nominated for 6 Oscars including Best Picture!
They were all in real FA-18s flown by real Navy Pilots
And Cruise flew his own P51 Mustang at the end of the movie
@@scottbarkley496 oh thanks for clearing that up. I thought the actors flew stunt planes instead of jets!

How can you not cry even once while watching this ? You are either emotionally very strong or you are a robot.
Top gun maverick: the love interest in this film was mentioned in top gun the admiral's daughter. And he broke her heart back then
There is an asian female pilot too with the callsign called ''Halo'' in the team as well.
18:02 this is called leading by example, where the leader shows them how its done basically, all the best leaders do this :)
A lot of these scenes in the movie were in actual fighter jets, Tom cruise is an actual pilot and did a lot of the movie himself
Better music, cinematography, writing, acting, action and plot.
Plus Maverick isn't a complete dickhead
It was great to have Val Kilmer here since he has suffered from a condition that has affected his voice. It is one of the most warm moments. "The kid needs Maverick" is one of the best lines.
This movie is absolutely phenomenal! I saw it 3 times in theaters and 5 more times when it came out on blu ray
Terminator 1 & 2, Alien & Aliens, Top Gun & Maverick, these are ICONIC movies followed by the best sequels ever!
A few tidbits:
-(Foreshadowing) In the first bar scene, Coyote covers Hangman’s eyes while playing darts and he still hits the bullseye.
-Final kill count:
Hangman: 2
Maverick: 5
Rooster: 3 (a helicopter, and he gets equal credit for Mav’s two kills.)
The dust getting kicked up in the shot at 3:10 was actually caused by an actual f-18 low pass. They used cgi to put the darkstar over the F-18
The emotion I felt watching this for the first time couldn’t compare to anything. I would give anything to have that experience again, and watching someone do that very thing is close enough for me
Watching it in Theaters for the first time was an experience. The sound design is out of this world. You could FEEL the engines starting up.
Sure, thats all true. But in the final movie most shots of the jets are CGI lol
Saw this in IMAX. One of the best theater experiences ever. S tier sequel.
That shot at the gas station wasnt a fan, that was actually real, and i believe they had one chance to get the scene right
One thing to point out is that it is not a gas station but a entry point to the base where a navy MA (Master at Arms) is shown proper ID before anyone enters. MA's are the USN version of military police there is a brief scene of 2 escorting "Mavrick" to RADM. Cain's office when he returns to the base.
And another thing, the roof coming off the entry point was not planned, it was accidental.
@@GerroxJr1 Yeah, a in the hut couldn't hold his fart
It wasn’t that they had one chance, but they damaged the hut so much they couldn’t do anymore takes, so it was a one take deal because of that, and it was perfect. Kudos to Ed Harris too, he took that blast like a mf’er.
It wasnt a fan but i wouldnt say that it was real, since the plane was cgi. Maybe they used an f18, and then they Cgi it to the dark star?
Special Thanks to my patrons
@@calibadgerdude6082The real reasons were:
a) the F-35 wasn't operating off any U.S carriers yet when the filming took place
b) it's got a load of secret tech in it
c)F-35 is a single seat only, whereas F/A-18 has 2 seat models suitable for filming
And the cameras weren't little Go-Pro's or something. They were I-MAX cameras.
@@toddlower5546 Which on a technical level is VERY impressive! Especially when you know and understand the limitations of the FILM that I-MAX uses!
Hangman also was the guy who had his face smacked into the keyboard by Bane in Dark Knight Rises
Tom cruise was the flight instructor for the cast before filming. They had to learn how to operate the camera rig to pick the best shots
I love the sequel so much more than the original, I swear I watched it at least 3-4 times in theatres.
i watched the original a few weeks ago and it is kind of bad.
One of the VFX team did an interview with a RUclipsr (who is a former US Navy and USAF pilot) about 6 months ago, he was forced to take it down a few days later by Paramount executives, but in that interview they discussed how much was real and how much was CGI, and it’s amazing how much CGI was used considering Paramount’s claims that they used very little:
All aerial shots of Darkstar are CGI.
Over 5 air control towers, and one Admiral's Daughter!"
*Goose turns to Maverick and whispers*
Goose: "Penny Benjamin..."
The history between these two is noted and from the interactions between them here in this movie I believe it wasn't just that one time.
Because they weren't allowed to fly them on their own. They're simply too expensive.
It’s what my dad would of done and “ prove that I wasn’t a mistake” from creed are line that makes this remakes/ reboots so dam good
24:20 I’ll never forget my own reaction when that Su-57 performed that cobra maneuver!
@@linusa2996 NO ONE gets free passage through the HUD without my A61 Vulcan saying something.
Pretty interesting info guys
3:08 that shot was actually a real shot and it was a one take because the gust of wind was real and the prop hut on the left actually broke and the shot was just perfect so they felt no need to do it again.
And Ed Harris actually stood there because he's a legit badass.
Most of the stunts. There's no way they thread a jet between two others for a movie.
That leaving the door open move, so smooth.
We have watched both movies and is our opinion that the original was much more COOLER. But Maverick was definitely more FUN to watch.
I once was an F-15 mechanic in the USAF. Birdstrikes are no joke.
Is it true what they say about the A10 Warthog? That it’d take birdstrikes in the back? That instead of an airspeed indicator, it had a calendar?
"Is he gonna be good too?!" It helps if you're piloting a type of 5th generation fighter plane that has hyper-maneuverability, as some Chinese and Russian planes have been designed to achieve. Since it was decided that even Tom Cruise couldn't pull off stealing one of those to use in the movie - the cartwheel enemy fighter plane was simulated in CGI.
That scene where the roof popped off as the jet flew by ACTUALLY HAPPENED!! I was shocked when I heard it, but, it's TRUE!!
Nooo! You took away that one (brilliant) line from the little kid!! 🥺 Him saying "Earth" was such a great moment! And you cruelly took that one line away from _a child_ just to scold him for wanting Cheerios when his parents clearly had made him come with them to the diner! 😭😭
This: but it was Froot Loops.
@@toddlower5546 Oh, I was wondering (it's been such a long time) what fruit loops looked like again, and assumed that those had to be fruit Cheerios as I could only remember the shape of Cheerios and assumed others didn't have the same shape!
"AND we LEARNED something!!" I'm dead 💀
There is a behind the scenes short about how they filmed it, a must watch!
“And despite your best efforts, you refuse to die” = Pete Mitchell is the reincarnation of Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise’s character in _The Last Samurai_ ).
I've never even seen the original top gun movie and I LOVE Maverick as the movie it is 😊💖
It wasn't a giant fan that created the gust of wind when the Dark Star was taking off.
I finally got to see this movie, so I can finally enjoy your commentary. Glad to see you back. I think a good call-sign for you would be Diner Cereal.
Definitely one of the best sequels of all time. Amazing movie with so many good scenes, and just so entertaining and the jet combat scenes were spectacular.
All the flight scenes are filmed practically so every shot that might seem impossible, was possible…almost like this was…mission impossible
A lot of people don't realise that the first act, where he reaches mach 10 is a set up for the later scene where he shows them it's possible to fly the mission parameters that was set.
Told you so. Gotta trust your fans, Ange. Wouldn't be saying how awesome this movie was if it wasn't.
They’re not all ripped like that of course (mostly bc damn do they eat a lot!), but no wonder the pilots in this movie are ripped, they’re pilots in the military hahaha
also, birdstrikes are very common sadly :( it makes me sooo sad for the birdies, but yeah it happens a lot and it’s dangerous bc it can blow up an engine.
All of these shots were in real jets while actually flying. So crazy
Not all of them lol. But ya they flew a lot in them
