- Today, June 12 2024, marks the 61st anniversary of the assasination of Medgar Evers. Just one month ago he received our nation's highest civilian honor, The Presidential Medal of Freedom, posthumously. Medgar Evers was a former World War II veteran who campaigned against segregation at the University Of Mississippi. He was shot outside his home on 12 June 1963 and was at first denied access to the local hospital because of his race. He later died from his injuries at just 37 years old. Bob Dylan wrote this song and performed it that summer at the March on Washington preceding Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's "I Have a Dream" speech.
