- My review and thoughts on the 2017 Yamaha MT 09 after 1 month of riding. Apologies for the poor audio on the Gopro footage. Any weird noises are coming from my Gopro and not the bike! Thanks for watching and subscribe for more.
I have had the MT09 for 4 years so far .I just love it ,it's a spectacular bike .If you have it as an option to buy .Do not think twice, the engine will give you thrills!
Like the way you thoroughly went over the switches and dash, showing them close-up.
20min no nonsense review.
Very well made, amongst the best...
+νικος γιώργος thanks for your comment and glad you enjoyed the video!
Just picked up my 2017 MT09, after having a MT07, I was so surprised it rides just like theMT07 trust me not a bad thing but so much more power and taller and god send, now loving the new bike, but still settling in with it, looking forward to the sun coming out again and doing some more miles
+john griffiths yeah I've not ridden the mt 07 myself but heard it's awesome! I love the mt 09 so far. Hope we get a good summer! Thanks for watching!
That was a great video. Best I've seen. I have a '17 with no quickshiter but like the bike. Is that the English countryside you're riding through ?
Thank you! Yeah the bike is great! Are you outside of the UK? As all the 17's onwards have a quickshifter in the UK. Yeah I'm riding the roads around Yorkshire here in England, some good roads but it rains a lot! Thanks for watching
@@bikerpaul100Haha I'm in Ft Payne, Alabama USA.
@@leewhaley552 Im jealous now then as Im guessing you will get better weather than us brits?! A couple of weeks ago it rained that hard here that it caused heavy flooding everywhere. Luckily I live on a hill so escaped it. Once winter hits though the bike doesn't get out much! Enjoy the bike & safe travels!
Best review of the 09 that I've seen so far
+Codey Radaelli cheers Code! Thanks for watching!
sorry meant to say Codey!
Did'nt reliase Keith Lemon had an MT09 great review though
John Law 😂
I really like this bike but the info screen being offset to the right is really playing havoc with my OCD !!!!
Love the image stabilization with the ride!!
I didn't know Keith Lemon had an MT-09? Joke aside, its a good review and a really nice bike :) The only little problem I have is the cheap control screen; it's built to a budget which is fair enough and understandable, but might have been nice to have a colour LCD screen as an optional extra. You considered putting an Akra exhaust system on btw?
Ha ha thanks! I agree a colour screen would be loads better. Surprised they didn't include one on the SP model tbh. Keep looking to change the exhaust but not had the money for it yet. If i do in future it will be the akra
Best review video I’ve seen so far. Good job 👏
Cheers Freddy! Thanks for watching
a few questions. 1 you ride verry normal, not insane fast. Here in Holland there a lot of dikes where you van Drive verry fast. you think the vering/shocks are able to handle that kind of riding? 2. what kind of Program for editing you use? thanks! Nice video!
Hi, I would say the standard suspension is quite soft, you do feel quite a lot of movement at speed. It's adjustable but maybe the SP model with higher spec forks & shock would suit you more if your riding at high speed or going on track days a lot etc. For editing i just use the cyberlink power director app on my phone (my phone's an android) Thanks for watching!
Nice review. I do like the screen, where I’d you get if from?
Cheers! The screen is the official yamaha one and I just ordered it through the dealer when I bought the bike. Thanks for watching!
@@bikerpaul100 Thank you. Quick reply too. 👍
if you rode the bike quickly and went rounds bends quickly the Triumphs have a better chassis turning in. few things id say you should upgrade. 1. get EBC HH sintered brake pads much better! maybe at next pad change. 2. Braided brake lines make it that much more better. 3. upgrade that exhaust to a carbon Akra!! 4. get some protection for the engine in case you did drop accidentally it will scratch on the protectors saving you a few bob!! !! That's a MUST>. and possible scratch protection on the Tank clear film. 5. Bar end protectors maybe protector the brake and clutch! 6. Axel front and rear protectors!! otherwise your done!! the above stuff wont cost a lot but makes your bike that much more better in braking and the protection is DEF required. oh yeh those tyres had them nothing compared to METZ roadtec01 and the pr4 Pr4 turn into 50pence shape!! Roadtec01 amazing tyre for sport and wet performance!! Nice video enjoy the bike its damn nice!! I am on my triple looking to move on , this bike is one I'm considering! or the MT10
+alf786 thanks for your suggestions. Think I will look at the EBC pads as heard they are good. Also got me eye on some R&G crash protection. I've not tried the roadtec tyres before so might change to them soon as the standard Dunlop' s on it are not great. You should definitely consider the MT 09. I think the Triumph ST's are brilliant and loved mine. Also i do think the Triumph's handle better but in terms of the engine the MT is just more fun to ride (in my opinion) just so much torque n a lot more eager in the lower gears. Give it a test ride, sure you will love it! Cheers for watching.
Nice review, I get my mt09 on Wednesday and can’t wait!! Where did you get your screen from?
+Allen Roebuck cheers Allen. You will love the bike, it's awesome! I got the screen through the dealer when I bought the bike. It's the official Yamaha screen. There is another video on my channel about it and how to fit it. Thanks for watching!
I've just covered 1500 miles on my bike. travel bk from Snowdonia on Sunday after a lads biking jolly one of the screws off my number plate came out so keep checking those as I think that arm suffers from alot of vibration. Had the recall sorted and only took them 20 mins so all good there 🖒
+Craig Hancox sounds like a good trip mate! Yeah will have to keep an eye on the plate then. Still waiting for the parts to arrive for the recall but hopefully won't be much longer! Did you get some use out of the quickshifter on your trip? What do you reckon to it? Cheers for watching the vid!
Good vid mate btw. Yes quick shifter is useful but only at certain times. forget it in 1st gear ! Go from 2nd into 3rd if your giving it some beans otherwise I wouldn't use it then either. Really it works well when your making full use of the revs but at times if your not pushing the engine hard enough it doesn't work well at all. Really pleased with the bike overall though apart from the sound lol could really do with an exhaust now I think. I'm on hols from work this week so I'm having a ride into peak district today 🏍🖒
Craig Hancox Cheers! heard the quickshifter is better in higher gears/revs. Agree on the exhaust, looks nice but is quiet! I ride in the peaks quite a bit, great roads. Have a good ride, you've picked a good day weather wise!
Great review, one point though... The shock isn't off an XSR as the XSR was made from the MT09 👌🏻
Good point, didn't realise that at the time! Thanks for watching!
I wonder why Yamaha put that display offset to the right. It’s one reason I don’t like it. The mt07 and mt10 both have it in the middle.
I dont know! A few people have commented saying they dont like it. I can see why but I honestly dont notice it, I must have got used to it being like that now! Thanks for watching
Seems smooth. At low speeds in traffic how is the on off throttle response...does it feel a little jerky? Did you ride the Z900? Would be nice to see a comparison. Is the transmission clunky in any gear?
Hi. It is a smooth ride. I believe Yamaha improved the throttle response on this model over the original mt 09. It's not snatchy but maybe not quite as smooth as My old triumph street triple. It's fine in town/city rides at slow speeds. I've not ridden the z900. Only bike j can compare to is My previous triumph and the engine and acceleration is better in my opinion on the MT. Thanks for watching!
The gearbox is better than on the Z900 by a mile. No problem with the response on standard mode.
Enjoy the summer, thanks for the nice review. Frank.
+Frank Stocker Cheers Frank, you too. Thanks for watching!
Hi Paul, thank you for your views on the MT09, good video.
Cheers David, thanks for watching!
Top vid mate 👍 stuck between this and the GSX-S 750 🤔 can't really stretch it or justify the SP version
Alexander Wotherspoon thanks! I've heard the GSX is a great bike and it's one I had in mind before I got the MT. Decided on the MT as prefer the triple engine. Might be worth test riding them both? Cheers for watching!
bikerpaul100 defo mate 😉 gonna test ride them both in a month or so. My last bike was a triumph 955 so the triple is something I love but also love the smoothness of a four 😉 think it'll come down to riding possition and looks 👍
Have just picked up my mt 09 sp 2019 mod have put 620 kms on it 1st thing I’m getting is the comfy seat the stock seat is way to uncomfortable then new pipes with a flash tail tidy and all frame wheels protection and different mirrors that go on bars then might upgrade braking system too Brembo front rear shox and forx are perfect on the sp mod best bike for the $$$$$
It is awesome bike! It has a few issues but only minor ones like the hard seat you mention. If I was ever to swap mine it would only be for the SP version or an MT 10. Enjoy your new bike and thanks for watching!
Great review - I currently have the MT-03 and am toying between the XSR 900 and the MT-09 for my next one - you may have just made my mind up :-)
+Dave Meighan thanks Dave! I was torn between the XSR and the MT too. Both brilliant bikes but I just preferred the style of the MT. Enjoy the bike and thanks for watching!
@@retrodan1962 hi, I've only briefly sat on the xsr so it's difficult to say really. I would guess it's a more relaxed riding position to the MT. However I'm also about 6'2 and find the MT really comfortable (seat is a little hard though). Personally I think it just comes down to which style you prefer. Thanks for watching!
Nice vid man.
Did your 09 come with those tyres and change lever as standard? Mine came with Bridgestone Battlax and a full ally gear lever, no rubber!
+Dave420 Haze yeah it did. That's odd! I've actually read some reviews that mention both Dunlop and Bridgestone tyres so maybe they change the tyres depending on the country. Are you in the UK? The Dunlops are OK but think I would have preferred Bridgestone! Thanks for watching!
Yes mate, in Hampshire. Strange that the gear change lever is different too. Mine was the first 2017 09 that came threw to my local dealer, maybe later production had different. Great bikes though ;-)
+Dave420 Haze yeah it's strange! I took a demo bike out for a ride before I bought mine but didn't really notice the tyres or change lever. Agree tho I love the bike!
Hi, nice review! Quick question: I haven't ridden a motorcycle since 2 years or so. Back when I did I had a Ninja 250cc but also had a course on bike control. I want to start again (mostly commuting to work) and wanted to ask if it would be a good bike to start again with? I've checked on forums and opinions are very different. I would like to hear your opinion, thanks :)
+Christopher Bendlin hi Christopher, it's a pretty powerful bike but in standard and B mode it's easy to ride. You just have to be careful with the throttle til you get used to it. It might be worth test riding an MT 07 and an MT 09 and see what you think. The throttle is nice and smooth for commuting. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the reply ! :) I was thinking about the MT 07 as well, but my fear is that after 6 months I'll want a bigger bike. But I think that I'll test ride both and see how the MT 09 is in B mode
Christopher Bendlin no problem, enjoy your test ride!
Great comprehensive review.
Thank you! Cheers for watching!
Got a 2017 FZ-09 in white. Coming off a 250 this bike feels like a monster 😁
+Djb917 B bet it looks great in white! It feels a monster to me too and I came from a triumph 675! Thanks for watching
Great review! In the next month I'll be getting the new MT 09 SP and hope I'll like it :D
Thanks! The SP looks great, the standard MT has the best engine of any bike I've owned so sure you will love it! Thanks for watching.
Deffo want mt09sp over a mt10 looks like you can have alot more fun an throw it around more
I've not tried the sp but the standard 09 is great! Personally I think the 09 has plenty of power and the price jump between mine and the mt10 was quite a lot. I've also heard that the mt10 is very thirsty on petrol. Thanks for watching!
Hi, can I use this bike for daily driving ?
In rush areas ? A little speed sometimes and mostly slow as in traffic at going to office timings ? It’s a daily driven bike right ?
Hi, yes definately! I've done lots of miles commuting to work on mine. In standard mode it's easy to handle at slow speeds and filters through traffic no problem. If you want to go faster than you can just put it in A mode. A mode makes the throttle a bit more snatchy so better suited for when your not commuting. Thanks for watching!
Well done thorough review Paul, thanks. Can't wait to try one! (new sub,Cheers)
Appreciate it, thanks for watching!
I’m thinking of getting a MT09, but the big down point is the 14ltr tank... compared to the 17ltr’ish tanks on the competition. How many miles are you getting on a full tank?
+Chris Harding hi Chris, to be honest I would struggle to say as I don't really take much notice on how many miles before fill ups. I do the odd commute but mainly ride at weekends (especially given the recent weather!) In my opinion it seems more economical than my old street triple when in 6th on the motorway but less when on the twisty roads. I have noticed filling up more regularly than on the ST too. As a bike I love it (engine, torque, style etc) but I didn't buy on its practicality points (small tank, seat fairly hard, windblast etc) thanks for watching!
Yamaha have a VIN checker on their site so you can check if there are any recalls or service issues being noted
+TheTWRider that's handy to know! Got my recall sorted now so all good. Thanks for watching!
bikerpaul100 I found it quite handy, just bought a '16 model pre reg and realised mine was one of the affected by the handle bar issue. Being done by the dealer before I pick mine up on Thursday.
Great review. Watch the voice inflection (going up at the end of a sentence). It makes you sound very unsure of yourself.
+Mark Dennis thanks for the feedback. Will keep that in mind for next time! Cheers for watching Mark
Hows the transmission? Not clunky? The 2015 I rode was and it was a concern.
+Nutter1138 hi, so far it's been really smooth. Clutch lever is light and the gear changes are quick and smooth. I used to have a Yamaha XJ6 and that had a clunky gearbox but so far this one is fine. They might have tweaked it this year when they fitted the quickshifter. Thanks for watching!
Nice review man. I have the MT07 and love the MT09
+beni8978 cheers! I've not ridden the MT 07 but heard its an awesome bike! Thanks for watching & if you like the MT 09 then keep an eye on my channel as will be plenty more vids about it in future!
Great review. All about the bike.
+David Beaumont Thanks David! Cheers for watching
Thanks for review!
How about night ride - what about LED illumination?
Ride safe ;)
+Gogaz Ala Hi, i've not yet ridden the bike at night but I have heard that the lights are fairly bright but only give a narrow beam of light. I will probably do some on bike vlogs soon and may ride at night to test it, so keep checking back for future vids. Thanks for watching!
Nice - be waiting your opinion of this.
What is this bike like with the wind when on the motorway or doing higher speeds? I hear it's a bit unbearable 80+mph
I find it fine on the motorway. At least for a naked bike anyway. At high speed or in strong winds you would feel it so probably best to get a screen for it or if your doing a lot of motorway miles then a bigger touring bike might be best. Thanks for watching!
I'm doing the direct access and was going to get a GSXR600 as my first bike but then got recommended this but as this will be my main form of transport due to selling my car I don't want something I need to worry about when having to go on the motorway or when it is a bit windy. I do live in Scotland afterall so it's inevitable
@@ShreksterZ I would say that the riding position is a lot more relaxed than a gsxr 600 as the bars are higher and the pegs in a better position. Having said that you are more upright so would feel the wind more. It's an awesome bike but not sure I would recommend it for long regular motorway journeys as your pretty exposed to the wind.
Really enjoyed this review- not the usual cocky bullshit- Thanks!
+Andy White thanks Andy, cheers for watching!
Have you had any issues with false neutrals? If ive had to stop suddenly and still in say 5th, if i try to change down the gear indicator goes blank and it wont go up or down without slightly letting the clutch out so it engages again, have to repeat the process to get into neutral. and i totally agree with the horn, im still randomly beeping at people!
+Chris Sheppard hi!, can't say I've had any false neutral issues. Only had odd one when I've been ham fisted with the clutch/changes between 1st n 2nd but that was my fault. Might be worth checking it out with your dealer. Yeah the horn is a pain. Still beeping at people every now and again myself. Must think I have road rage issues lol. Cheers for watching!
Chris Sheppard I get the same issue with my xsr 900. also when I put the bike in first gear it clunk's that loud it sounds like the gearbox has fallen.out
I used to have that exact problem on my 15 mt07. I could never get it to do it at the dealership so they wouldn't accept anything was wrong with it.
Great review thanks
iow bob glad you liked it, thanks for watching!
Please don't use RUclips anti-shake, it makes me dizzy when I watch the video as it feels like the image bends and distorts.
+Anarkist2k8 thanks for the feedback. I noticed that too. Will avoid using it in future. Thanks for watching!
my b214 front lasted 18000km. amazing
This bike isn't cheap anymore & now retails at £8542 so it's more expensive than the Triumph S so will be going to look at that aswell
Hi, yeah seems to have gone up in price since I bought mine. I love Triumph's too and sure the new s is an awesome bike. Not much between the 2 really. Just down to style and a few features here and there. Thanks for watching!
How does this compare to your Street Triple?
How do you get on with the seat? I find it quite firm and after a couple of hours riding quite painful. I'm currently looking for a replacement seat, such a pity because it's ruining the bike for me.
+Graham Higby I've got to say that the more I ride it the more I notice how firm it is! Definately not as comfy as my old triumph. I've not looked at aftermarket ones yet but heard that the Yamaha comfort seat is a big improvement. Seen a couple of youtube vids on it. Very pricey though as it's £250! Might have to get saving. Thanks for watching!
bikerpaul100 The dealer I bought the bike from let me try the comfort seat for a week but personally I found it too firm on the inside of my legs where they over hang the seat on both sides (if you know what I mean). So unfortunately at the moment I'm having a look at the Sargent seat which looks good apart from the price tag of £375
+Graham Higby that's interesting to know about the comfort seat. I'll have a look online but guessing there's not many other options around.
bikerpaul100 it's a pity because it spoils a great bike. p.s like the review.
+Graham Higby Cheers mate!
Love um.
Is the front still wobble once it reaches 160KM/H or did you experience any wobbly handling?
+Barren Wizard hi, I've not ridden the bike at high speeds often but so far I've not noticed any wobbly handling. The suspension has been changed/upgraded since the last model so maybe Yamaha have fixed that if it was an issue on the old version. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the reply! Ride safe!
the bike looks like rinding 1 month in your dreams. how much miles did you done?
+Fixstern16 Hi, i've only done about 300 miles so far. Thanks for watching!
I'm jealous
Great video
Paul The Grump cheers! Thanks for watching!
this is one beautiful bike except for the stupid LCD control which makes me feel like the bike comes without one and you just get one at Wal-Mart. Yamaha please wake up take a look at what Triumph did with the new street triple.
just my humble 2cents. no offense
+Hgroton yeah I agree on the screen. Think they just did it to save money but a full colour large TFT display would have been nice! Rest of the bike looks ace tho. Thanks for watching!
Shame they don't do a better after market one.
The LCD control looks cheap and out of place.
First. Also, thanks for the review man :D
+Hubert Baron Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it!
Can you tell me where you got the windscreen and whats it called?
Hi, its the official Yamaha screen. I ordered through the yamaha dealer when I bought the bike. I've got another video on my channel about the screen and how to fit it. Thanks for watching!
What's it like looking after the satin finish?
+Sam Grattan Hi, I would say that you have to be a bit more careful compared to standard finish/paint. It can scratch easily. I spilt a bit of petrol on the tank at a petrol station once and used the paper towels they had to dry it which caused a small scratch. The matte finish does look great but just needs a bit more care. E.g you dont really need to polish like you would a standard bike as polishing causes small scratches. However you can usually only see them in strong sun light. Thanks for watching!
Does that little windscreen make a difference????
Hi, I'll be honest it doesn't make much difference really, you still feel the wind a lot on motorways etc. I bought it to tidy up the front of the bike as think it looks a lot better with it. Thanks for watching!
@@bikerpaul100 it does look nice! Cheers!!
How would it compare to the BMW s1000r
Hi, I've not ridden the bmw but would imagine the bmw would be faster and have better brakes & suspension - just going off reviews I have read. However there is a quite a big difference in price between the two. Thanks for watching!
@@bikerpaul100 yes thanks for the input. I really can't decide between the two. Also of ppl say the mt just feels quicker and is more fun
@@AlanTrades the mt 09 is a really fun bike as it has loads of torque and the engine is amazing. I guess the bmw will be quicker but probably less torque at lower speeds. Only way to really tell will be to test ride them both which is tricky at the moment! Hope you enjoy whichever one you get!
Traction control doesnt stop it from wheeling
What did you think of the headlight at night?
+tubedriver009 hi, I've not been out on it at night yet so can't say. I've seen a couple of vids on RUclips commenting that although bright the lights don't project that we'll into the distance. I might be doing some riding vlogs in future so keep an eye on my channel as might do some night rides. Thanks for watching!
Would be nice if you did such a video!
How is the on off throttle response?
It's a tiny bit snatchy in A mode but a big improvement from the 1st version of the MT09 I've heard. Can't say I notice it and seems just as smooth as my last bike - a triumph street triple. Thanks for watching!
There's no oil in the oil window ?
+Darrell Hi, you can only see the oil level when the bike is upright. Once it's leaning on the stand you can't see it. My last bike a triumph didn't have an oil window so I thought that at first. But yeah plenty of oil in it, just has to be upright. Thanks for watching!
Can you paste a link to your wind shield? Please
Hi, it's the official Yamaha screen. Here's the link www.yamaha-motor.eu/gb/en/products/motorcycles/hyper-naked/mt-09-2019/accessories/mt-09-fly-screen/bs2-261c0-00-00/ I've also got another vid on my channel of the fitting for it. Thanks for watching!
@@bikerpaul100 Thank You sir :)
First gear is clunky?
Midhun Mohan it is a little clunky and makes a fair noise when changing down from neutral but I wouldn't say it's any more clunky than other bikes I've owned. Overall the gearbox is pretty slick. Thanks for watching!
whats the bike like riding at night i hear the headlight pattern is rubbish for the road at night
+MegaPaddles hi, I've not ridden the bike at night yet but have seen other RUclips vids which show it and it does look poor! Thanks for watching!
bikerpaul100 thanks for replying bud
I had an email conversation with "Tripage" LED guys, gave them a few links from youtube that illustrated how crap the headlight is, and they said they where looking to get a 2017 headlight unit to see if something could be done. I've heard good things about their replacement bulbs for the first gen Mt09.
the tyres are oem dunlop sprtsmarts
+Dark Sider hi. There not sport smarts on my bike. They are Dunlop oem but not sport smarts as I used to have them on previous bike. These are dunlop sport max. Unless they fit different tyres depending on the country/region. Thanks for watching!
yup. D214 is the oem designation. slightly different carcass, but essentially a slightly cheaper version of the sportsmart. Im in the bike tyre business ;-) Sportmax is a generic name given to all the road tyre range, sportmax roadsmart, sportmax sportsmart, sportmax Q3.
Dark Sider ah right, I stand corrected! I think there ok to be honest, will upgrade when they wear out but not bad so far. I remember years ago some Dunlops that came as standard on a suzuki sv650 I bought new. those were horrendous!
Break in on newer bikes is bull shit there is no need to pussy foot it around. The factory puts the motor through the limits before its in your hands. After buying my Fz07 I warmed up the bike for about 5 min and I left the lot and put load on the piston rings like up to 9k RPMs changing gears all the way to 6th and back down to seal the rings tight. I changed the oil at the 600 mile mark with full synthetic and she runs just fine and even after the oil change I noticed a bit more power. Its a Yamaha its bullet proof mate.
+Dusty22 yeah your probably right. I'm just overly cautious! Had a Yamaha XJ6 years ago so I do trust there bikes and you like you say I'm sure it's bullet proof. Thanks for watching!
Being overly cautious on a new bike is actually not a good idea! The machining and tolerances are much too small and fine. You need load on those piston rings to seat properly against the honing of the cylinders. Hard break in is the way to go, but in doing so it's good to change the oil in the first 100 miles or so.
I only changed my oil at 600 because I did a 50/50 brake in. Hard on the first 10 miles from the dealer and the rest were lower RPM mixed with some high RPM up and down shifts. Note I never red lined it till I did the oil change to full synthetic at 600 miles. And at 2k miles she feels smooth in the shifts and pull a bit harder and everything is working great.
poopdawg27 And when something goes wrong, they hook your bike up to the computer, and see you redlining the bike and void the warranty. Regardless whether it's correct or not to do a hard break in, your warranty get voided. That would be my luck though
Jerry P no one is suggesting redlining, just creating load so the piston rings are actually properly mated. I understand the concern though
I traded my STR in for the XSR900, the xsr is so much better.
+pmf2910 cool! I was really torn between the xsr and the MT 09. Think the xsr looks Awesome! Thanks for watching.
Better than Street Triple?
Sneakers is to nike. Motorbike is to yamaha. Lol
Whine from 3rd gear
