    Michael Douglas has stated that this is his favorite character he ever played. He performed his heart out. The true sad moment comes at the movie's conclusion when the detective realizes that he can't retire. He couldn't end his career living with the fact that his last act as a police officer was killing someone.

    I saw Falling Down in the theatre opening night. I thought it was brilliant then! The most important part of the movie is when the "Not Econmically Viable" guy is being taken away by the cops and looks at Dfens and says "Don't forget me". That scene brakes my heart. It's the whole movie in a nut shell. Notice they are wearing the same outfit, down to the tie, pocket pens, and the same music cue when he dies at the end.

      I think people today when they see this movie, or younger generations they don't fully get this. This was a turning point in American history this was when we went from the industrial powerhouse, to everything going over seas, and outsourcing all our jobs even the better jobs. Cars, Steel, electronics. Younger generations just take it as a matter of fact that everything is from China, India, etc They don't remember the times when 80% or more still said Made in the USA. At the very same time divorce was going through the roof. So men everywhere were losing their jobs and their families. Many of which were also war veterans dealing with PTSD. This movie struck a cord for the the late 80's. America has been in free fall ever since, our economy was so big it's been a long ride, but sooner or later it will crash and bounce. I have seen many men go through the things he does, and how destroyed they are to lose their job and their family and kids. But they'll never get a ribbon, bumper sticker, or a special "month". This character clearly has mental issues though, the video tape at the end shows he was abusive before the fall. The guy saying, "Don't forget me" is almost more iconic then the rest of the movie. He represented a generation.

    "I'm not saying I'm on his side but I understand where he is coming from." That sums up the movie quite nicely. Take a guy that was already a person who had anger issues, have him end up feeling failed and discarded by all of society, have that one final push over the edge to cause him to snap and lose impulse control, and then have him hit a string of triggers to push him further over the edge with more and more negative reinforcement as the day goes on. All those little moments with thoughts of man I'd like to smack this person for being dumb but you don't do it because you know it is wrong and you keep yourself under control only this dude has finally lost that control.

    Michael Douglas said in an interview that this is her personal favorite film of his, and his father Kirk Douglas was proud of his son's performance.
    I remember watching the trailer to the movie on TNT, my dad watched it and said it was a pretty good movie. I finally watched it on HBO back in 2006 with my older sister in her birthday.

  • @RetroClassic66
    @RetroClassic66 Год назад +10

    This is one of my favorite movies. The layers in this are so deep. I’m from Southern California, and I had left the state for a few years in late 1990, and I honestly feel that this film captures the tension of late 1980s/early 1990s Los Angeles PERFECTLY.
    The Cold War had ended in the few years prior to this film’s release. During the Cold War, Southern California had a very strong military and defense industry presence. That began to change drastically once the Soviet Union collapsed and the Cold War was over. Thousands of defense industry workers were laid off or forced into early retirement. The population of the region, which had been growing, continued to grow, including massive numbers of immigrants from several other countries, but now complicated by the fact that a lot of people were newly unemployed who had given most of their lives to an industry that simply no longer needed them. Housing prices were rising. Cultural changes were happening rapidly. It was a period of high stress and tension for quite a lot of people, for many different reasons. It wasn’t hard to imagine that some people would snap.
    I look at this film as less of a comedy and more of a tragedy. This ordinary guy, Bill, had grown up maybe a little behind the times but had been taught to believe in the kind of idealistic America that many of us were still being taught about in the early 1970s (I’m Generation X, born in 1966) via certain types of television and movies including educational films in school. I was raised on a heavy diet of Disney live action movies from the 50s and 60s, TV reruns of several shows from the 50s, 60s, and early 70s, and educational films at school that had been made in the 50s and 60s. Where I lived in Southern California was a very conservative area overall, heavy in traditional values and lifestyles, although as time passed it began changing slowly. By the late 80s, I was adjusting, but perhaps still not fully accepting of the new dynamic and paradigm shift in society. I had to accept that the starry-eyed dream of America we had been taught was never exactly real and even if it had been, that time had passed. However, there were those who had a much harder time adjusting to the new reality than I did. I think a lot of us either knew someone like Bill or had heard about or seen someone like him, who was simply stuck in a comforting past that no longer existed.
    Most of us would never in a million years go as far as Bill did. But as you yourself said, we understand the feelings involved, and the frustration. I think that sadly this is the kind of thing that can happen when people are treated like disposable objects instead of human beings, and when we’re not taught to learn how to adjust to changes in life and society.

    Colors Connection Fact: In the scene in which the drive-by car crashes, there is a mural of a Hispanic depiction of Jesus on the wall. This same mural is also present in Colors (1988), also starring Robert Duvall as an LAPD cop, in the scene in which the police officer played by Sean Penn spray paints a kid's face.
    Historical Fact: The movie was being shot on locations in Lynwood, California when the 1992 Los Angeles riots began. By April 30, the riots were sufficiently disruptive to force filming to stop early that day. Film crews produced more footage inside of Warner Brothers Studio in Burbank as the riots continued. By May 4, when the crew intended to resume in Pasadena, initial requests to do so were denied, causing delays. The tension around the riots was something that the filmmakers deemed to have an effect on the finished film. The Korean American Coalition protested the film for its treatment of minorities, as well as the South Korean grocer. Because of this, and the boycott threats that followed, this movie was banned in South Korea.

    I saw this one in the theater when it came out, but I was passing through Zurich at the time. They paused the movie half way through to allow for an intermission. Went to the lobby and bought another beer. At 18 years old. Talk about a different time and place. Made me feel bad for the character in the movie even more.

    This movie s such a great movie. You feel bad for Michael Douglas character at first and you understand where he's coming from (all of us have had those days) but you find out that his cheese has slipped off his cracker. And yes, there are far too many men and women running around out there like this.
    Also, yes SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) is a thing, although you don't hear as much about it anymore.

    I missed this one in the theater, but it was a Video World rental. D-Fens was basically a guy who did everything like he was supposed to, worked hard in a specialized field, and got canned and thrown away. He already had a mean streak and all of this pushed him over the edge.
    It looks like he was turning into a "family annihilator". I won't say more about that here but folks can look it up.
    SIDS is also a real thing, or at least it was at the time. It may be called something else now or causes parsed out of the original dx.
    Lastly, there was a time you could find more than boots and clothes at surplus stores. Back around the time of this movie I found a LAW tube at one. Once it has been fired it is just an inert tube. You could still open and close it and all over that, there was just nothing to shoot. A long time ago my house got broken in to and that was one of the things they stole, along with my video game console, a stero, etc.

    • @AnonEyeMouse
      @AnonEyeMouse Год назад +4

      He isn't that ordinary. The ex wife, mother and video all show that he was screwed up. It was only a matter of time before he hurt someone. It's one of the most interesting things about the film. During test screenings, Douglas and the director were watching the audiences. They expected people to be scared. To recognise that this is the bad guy. But the audiences kept cheering and applauding. They got louder and more enthusiastic as the film progressed and Douglas began to wonder if the film was a mistake. The audience was supposed to see the protagonist as the bad guy... not the hero.
