This film is so underrated. One of the best Michael Douglas movies ever.
I saw this on release at the theater with my girlfriend, and she got angry at my "inappropriate" laughter at several points in the film.
I am a female and thought it was HILARIOUS. I have seen it 4 times.Its so politically incorrect.haha.
Some individuals do not like depictions counter to their social acceptable standards as a show of irony or catharsis. That reaction is nothing negative or positive, it’s just is a part of some people’s normal psychological responses. There is less of a disconnection in between reality and false depictions of reality and are probably showing strong empathy for the secondary characters (potentially because of real life proximity or possibly just their innate reactions). Not all story types work for all people.

Me too I saw it opening night,I was in 8th grade. It was the day of the first wtc attack attempt(wish it was the last). I was 13 but somehow related to D Fens,I’m now close to the age he was at the time. It doesn’t even seem that long ago which is scary🤣

Something to keep in mind is that the defense industry once employed A LOT of people in southern California. And these were good paying jobs, not minimum wage jobs. But the collapse of the Soviet Union made a lot of those jobs unnecessary and those jobs were soon gone. So this guy went from being the well paid member of an important workforce to an unemployed guy no one needs anymore. and it happened fast. It doesn't excuse him, but it's part of the stress of his life.
Falling Down is probably among my 20 favorite films of all time. For better or worse I greatly identify with Bill Foster. Other than his ominous threats to his ex-wife I can't see him as a bad guy. Society pushes all of us very hard and sooner or later one of us takes drastic measures to push back. I get it.

The Black gentleman holding the sign is also wearing the exact same work outfit as the main character and is probably also let go from the same DOD job as they even acknowledge each other as they pass.

Yep, I think the problem she had was articulating that. Which does happen routinely, many times people in relationships with sociopathic, narcissistic, or other such tendencies do not have the background or knowledge to both identify and communicate the behaviors they see (and then of course in the 1990s most police in that part of LA had very little domestic violence training, they spent a lot more time dealing with violence, gang violence, drug abuse, and theft treating most situations with similar levels of aggression as responses to individuals involved in those crimes).
@@LogicalNikothen again, some women gravitate to that kind of personality. Reminds me of something I heard somewhere once. “Treat ‘em like shit. If you kick a dog it’ll chase ya.” I don’t agree with that sentiment, but none the less it’s more true than most people will admit.

Yeah, I was coming to comment. Someone can be violent and never actually touch a person. You could have someone that throws stuff around or just yelling at someone in their face. Doesn’t mean that got hit…but a person can still be violent and scary.

One of my favorite movies ever. So well made.
The guy who wrote this said he was inspired by a news article he saw about a truck driver, a totally normal guy by all accounts, who apparently just decided one morning to start sideswiping passing cars on an off-ramp when no one would let him off. He couldn't get the story out of his head. We've all had bad days, but he couldn't stop thinking about what it would take to bring the average person to that point, and it became sort of a commentary on how precarious human nature and everyday life can be, in the sense that we all may be a lot closer to that than we like to think about. Great movie.
Yeah, truth is, there's a lot of people "on the edge" out there.
I have a feeling that if they talked to the people who lived with him, that he would have always been close to the edge at home. Just like this character.

Child support is separate from parenting plan, legally... just because someone isn't paying doesn't preclude the parenting plan... so visitation, etc. Are still on the board legally... I know, my ex is about 27k behind in child support, she hasn't paid anything since she was ordered to in 2017
No consequences for her lack of payment? I'd have imagined ignoring a court order would land you some legal penalties.
@pvanukoff it does nothing to me... it does to her, but only way I can do anything about it other than her license being suspended, is to go back to court with her which I can't afford to pay for...

I have full custody of our daughter, she sees her every other weekend, she doesn't even do that, sometimes there's months in between her getting her.. she doesn't help with school stuff, she doesn't pay her $365 a month in support, June she will be 7 years behind in support... can't get help, can't pay attorney cause as single father I can't afford...

30 years ago, Venice by the boardwalk was actually kind of a bad part of town, and not super expensive... I know it sounds crazy given today's metrics. I'm sure something FAR nicer currently resides on that property.
I was watching this in camp with some coworkers a couple years ago. Another one of my coworkers walked into the dry tent halfway through asking what we were watching. My buddy just looked at him and said “dude’s having a bad day.”

The way this movie is presented is that there's mitigating circumstances for all of D-Fens' behavior at first. The convenience store price gouging, the gang members' attempted robbery and attempted murder (with innocent casualties), the homeless guy running an obvious scam, the difference between advertisement and reality in a fast food restaurant, and the skinhead running the surplus store; those all are designed to get you kind of on his side. He's just a guy having a bad day, and reacting in an extreme way. Even the golfer dying of the heart attack was meant to be somewhat amusing, as he really dug his own grave being a jerk.
It shifts gears as you start to see that his ex-wife is terrified of him, and that he was emotionally abusive. It really starts to turn as he inadvertantly holds a gardener and his family against their will. Even the line near the end: "I'm the bad guy?" echoes that concept. He goes from being kind of an antihero to a truly terrifying villain.
On the flip side, Prendergast's story is about losing his guts after his daughter died and his wife started going insane. He was even quitting the force because he was scared of her getting upset with him in her fragile state. He finally stood up to her, and given his statement at the end, they never ended up moving to Arizona.
I said all that to say this: this is Joel Schumacher's greatest movie, and it makes the two Batman movies he did even more perplexing.
The normal price I remember paying for a soda back in the 80's was .50c and it was that way for a long time.

What a great movie. Michael Douglas at the peak of his game and Robert Duvall as his usual stellar self.Duvall has been so great in so many films. One of my faves is still the Great Santini.

I was actually surprised by your comments about the detective's wife on the phone at the start of the movie. I thought someone like yourself would be able to even remotely consider the possibility that the individual may be going through things. Things they can't control, traumatic life events. Rational behavior in short supply. "This could not be real. I refuse to believe that could have been a real conversation with anyone."

Sergeant Martin Prendergast played by Robert Duvall his wife is played by Tuesday Weld and as a younger actor was exceptionally attractive started acting in the late 50's now she is 80 years young. Peace out.

My Uncle went to jail for 5 years after 2 Bikers high on PCP broke into his dwelling and killed his dog and one of them took a bite out of the side of his neck. He was a very small man like 4'11" and they both were much larger. He managed to get to his shotgun and shot one of them. The other freaked out and ran the one he shot walked away and was found dead a couple miles away from blood loss.
Love the reaction and how u put together how he was fired so quickly by noticing the newspaper... Most people dont pay attention to detail like that... Im suprised u havent reacted to dune yet! I recommend a video called "Falling Down was PROPAGANDA". While the title itself is gauche, it highlights how off the weird U-turn at the last third of the movie is, where they suddenly make him want to kill his family. All the other interactions were based off him expecting a common, shared responsiblity and decency. He's only gotten violent as a response to the threat of, or outright violence.
Even at the corner store, the whole altrecation came from the owner not willing to break his money up, forcing him to buy something instead. While he IS clearly mentally unhinged, his true fault is trying to live in the 90s based on the lie he was sold by the 50s.
Edit: I too miss the character of product design from before the mid 1990s. No, corpos, I don't want to drive a jelly bean.😭

Yeah physicality isn't the only abuse people can endure. The man doesn't need to have laid hands on his partner or child in order to be terrifying to them.
In a world where you have no control over most anything control of a street is a win.
1:50 Can confirm. That is exactly how some of us on the spectrum (or have a touch of the 'tism, as I like to say) perceive our environment at times. The most miniscule stimulation, if irritating or disagreeable, can be magnified by orders of magnitude and become a monumental focal point, which then often triggers a cascading effect where other small stimulations begin to elevate into a screaming chorus of absolute mental cacophony, and getting away from it and escaping the situation, by any means necessary, becomes your entire life goal in that moment.
Regardless of what anyone thinks, watchers need to understand the context in which this film was made. At the time it was released the economic and political environment in America at that stage was very delicate. Lay-offs of the white shirt and tie workers from traditionally safe jobs was causing "issues" to surface. D-Fens's character is representative of that time, so his snapping at the start of the film is understandable along with all his character failings. Truly great performance by both Michael Douglas and the legendary Rober Duvall. I also loved the perfect cameo by Frederick Forrest as the racist scumbag and a Coppola regular. Arguably Schumacher's greatest film alongside Batman and Robin.
LOL I'm not into golf courses either but it would be just as viable to tear down sprawling football stadiums or basketball arenas to put 'affordable housing' up instead of the multi-billion-dollar rip-off that they are haha.

I think you would also enjoy "The Game"(1997), directed by David Fincher, in which Michael Douglas plays the main character as well.
Pretty much a perfect movie.
it's hard not to relate to this movie, even if you've never gone through it, and even with the obvious mental issues the guy has.
If you get to your forties, and you've never had a moment when you felt like things were just crashing down around you, you're very lucky. it's hard to decide in those moments whether you'd rather lash out at others or just curl up in a ball and die.
Neither is a good option, but that's how it feels when it happens...

My daughter and her Son were absolutely terrorised by an ex partner and no he didnt lay hands on them. Physical violence is not the only kind and sometimes not even the worst.
It's somewhat Kafkaesque. You should check out Orsen Welles film version of The Trial. Also, Terry Gilliam made one of the greatest ever sci-fi films, Brazil. Again, it's inspired by The Trial. Robert De Niro plays the greatest plumber ever. Both films are full of dark humour and despair.

Cop's wife has severe mental health issues (possibly grief driven - possibly some dementia) and he is the old fashioned good guy who will support and love her no matter what and no matter how embarrassing it looks when he is speaking to her on the phone.
Michael Douglas is breaking bad before it was a thing in this movie.
I think you missed a great deal to this movie, Michael Douglas is definitely the bad guy in the end, but it’s a lot more grey than you make it out, it’s ultimately a movie that does 2 things with that character, it makes him relatable to the every man, he’s battling against the every day bs, I really think you missed that, everybody has thought of fighting back against these things at some point, we just don’t go to his extremes. The other element you missed was that d fens and pendergrass were almost exact parallels, his wife and d fens’ mother are essentially the same, shown when prendergrass demonstrates knowing how to deal with her, both characters are being worn down by everyday pressures and life, they go about it in different ways, yet both are wrong. Prendergrass even moves closer to d fens ways as he becomes more willing to fight back. It’s all about the grey areas of good or bad.

You can be abused emotionally and it can be devastating to your health.
Michael Douglas' character was absolutely unhinged. He was pushed to his breaking point and had enough. So much so that suicide by cop was the best course of action for him to take. Which is sad when you think about it. To feel driven so far into feeling helpless, and worthless, that the best thing you can do is to die to leave some money for your kid (who you're not even allowed to see). . . So while he was not a good person, he was still some what of a sympathetic character because of that feeling of hopelessness, and worthlessness. It takes viewing as an adult to realize that from the very beginning of the movie he was the "bad guy", even though he is the protagonist. And I am rambling on trying to sound smart, when I'm not. Great film, great reaction. Hope you have a great day.

- Right off the bat, I think MrLBoyd is missing the theme; I'm just at the part where he is in the store and the assumption is being made that the Main Character is a "Bad Guy" - that is not the case at all - the reason he went into the store was to ask for change for the phone, the shopkeeper was being a complete A$$ telling him he wouldn't make change he was required to buy something, so he chose to grab a soda to play along with the Shopkeepers demand, then realized he wouldn't even get the needed change to make a payphone call with the 15 cents - all he wanted was to get some quarters so he could use the payphone and the Shopkeeper was being a complete jerk. The dude could have just been a nice guy and broke his dollar bill but he had to be an A-hole, I 100% relate to the Main Characters frustration and do not blame him for losing it. The one to blame for this escalation was 100% all on the Shopkeeper. Yes, the Main Character could have handled it better, however the point of the movie is that he has reached that point where he has had enough and can't take anymore bull$hit, and is pushed over the edge. That is the whole theme for the entire movie.

Prendergast’s wife most likely had a nervous breakdown when they lost their daughter. That unsettled potentially other situations which left her with PTSD, a strong fear of abandonment, irrational protective instincts, and controlling behavior to avoid experiencing any potential of loosing someone again. The downside is that this movie depicts very common 1990s thinking of just ignoring problems and then confronting them aggressively head on later as they impact your life.
Of course it’s much better to not ignore such things and treat them early and consistently so you aren’t placed it situation where drastic changes are needed (e.g. giving up an enjoyed career)
And I agree on golf courses. It's not a problem that we enjoy leisure activities and resources to it. It's a fine game and pastime activity. However the problem is that as a society we prioritize the allocation of valuable resources to the leisure of the few and privileged over the basic welfare of the majority. It's not the most pressing example of this in our society, nor the issue of highest importance; its just a sad reflection on how we manage society.
