    You are entering the twilight zone !! ..ever since "SOCIETY" came about when different groups of people settled together in one place in order for it to work people have had to live the truman life in one way or another ... and even before society... to survive you had to do things maybe u didnt want to stay with the fam know your place your role or go live alone and very likely die ... this is everyones life in one way or another .. unless you live by your self in the woods completely off the grid .. only then can you really say you lived your life

    Think about this too, the actors who were consistent in Truman’s life in the show had also given up their real life to take part in it. It’s not like his wife could have a husband and kids while being his wife on the show.

    I cannot believe you didn't know anything about the concept of this movie up to this point. But that made it more of a surprise when watching it. It's an intellectually stimulating satire and a modern film version of Plato's allegory of the cave. We all need to outgrow our fears and limitations to try to grasp for something more in life. Only a few of us will reach a greater enlightenment or understanding as Truman achieves at the end. A highlight in careers of Jim Carrey, Ed Harris and Peter Weir.

    You're referencing Plato's Allegory of the Cave. In my personal theory of mind, I see all the defining blind spots of personal character as the echoing shadows of avoidant strategies involving existential dread in all its forms. This feeling that you're in a movie or TV show and can't find your way out is actually a more common feeling than generally recognized. And you're right on the money, imo, in that it's a modern formulation of Plato's cave.

    The band Rush has an album in 1981 called Moving Pictures. On that album was a song called Limelight. I've always felt that song, and this movie, anticipated the social media world we have now. In the movie, there is only one Truman Show. In today's world, RUclips and Twitch are loaded with Trumans. In the movie, it wasn't his choice but in the real world the Trumans are choosing to put their lives on camera for the world to watch. I can watch someone react to a video they are watching and the video depicts people reacting to video they are watching. If I wanted to, I could record myself watching the video and upload it so that people could watch me watch a video of someone watching a video of people watching a video.

  • @LogicalNiko
    @LogicalNiko 5 месяцев назад +1

    So the concept of this movie was rooted in the tend of the time of "reality shows". The concept of realty shows had been around since the 1940's but in the late 1990's they were starting to explode. You COPS, then had "The Real World" starting in 1991 with MTV, and then Road Rules, and many other similar shows. And then in 1997 Survivor went through the roof and really pushed the concept of the Truman Show into production.
    The ultimate concept that you discuss at 29:00 is really Plato's allegory of the Cave. For a long time after Socrates died Plato continued pondering his ideas. Per Plato, as Socrates left no written works, Socrates believed in divine truths, virtues of man, etc. But the more Plato used his teacher as a projection for the Socratic method the more he began to notice that these truths were subjective.
    He explored the concepts of good vs evil and found that actions in context could not really be considered good or evil without viewing the entire outcome and viewing the circumstances from the perspective of the person involved. You could be doing good acts that harm many people. You could be an evil brutal conquering man who ultimately did what was best for his people to survive. You live a life of good but have just been born on the loosing side of a war/ideology. All of these things seemed to exist simultaneously in multiple states depending on how you looked at them and saw them within context.
    This is where the concept of the Cave came in. He imagined all actions, all outcomes that occur as shadows on a cave wall. We see them as they fall. We accept the world to exist as what we can perceive around us. But in an ultimate truth these events cannot just be as we see them. There must be other perspectives, other connections. We only see a less complex two dimensional cast of the reality that truly exists, and for other perspectives that reality could be completely different.

    Everyone talks about the main theme of entertainment, control etc. but I always viewed the movie from a different lens. The need to "live", to go to Fiji, to escape the boring life. Would you live 100 years in a place where everything is perfect and nothing bad or exciting happens? Or would you take 30 years in the real world, with all the different experiences, positive and negative.

    Plato's cave allegory is about people trapped in a cave and they are only allowed to see shadows cast by a fire. They believe shadows are the reality. They don't know that there are real objects that block light to create those shadows.
    If you release a prisoner to the real world, he will realize the truth of reality obviously. But if he were to go back into the cave and try to logically convince his old friends in the cave, they would reject him.
    So you were close with your memory. I had to look it up to remember lol.
    But your title sums up the movie perfectly. Most people in society are "Trumans stuck in their own Truman show". Hopefully they will find the exit one day. But they are blinded by ads, CNN, MSNBC, fox news, businessmen, politicians, etc.

    Feel like this shows has layers of meta, at least for me. The first easy layer is that this symbolizes gow the government and elites are constantly monitoring and controlling your life because they think they know better than you what you need or want.
    The second layer for me symbolizes how the devil gives us a life of a lie to get us to bend to his whims. The director is the devil masquerading as god trapping us in sin, telling us it is what we chose, yet he presents us no other choice.

    Plato’s allegory. You’re so right. It’s an old story. There’s definitions online. The way I remember it from college is people can have a version of reality that is constructed of shadows on the wall of the cave they life in, but if they ever go outside and into the light (enlighten) they NEVER can go back into the world of shadows! Once you see truth you can live in a lie.
