Hey Everyone, apologies for wrong info, for some realise I always think Schmincke is honey based - but it’s NOT! They are however not vegan due to the ox gull, which is what makes them so flowy and smooth I guess - NOT the honey! ☺️🧡 Sorry again!! 🧡

It’s called a “Ruling Pen” and was originally used, back in the day, for architectural or engineering drawings. It works best for straight lines, rules against a straight edge or ruler. It’s best to fill it gently with a paint brush. Wipe off any excess from the outside of the blades with a tissue. You should be able to tighten the blades to make a finer line. 😊😊 Hold the pen fairly upright and allow the ink to flow sideways. Hope this helps. 😊

Haha, literally wanted to say the same - that it was originally ment to use with ink ☺️

I have a few old ruling pens from my dad’s and my husband’s mechanical drawings sets. I found that, if they were taken care of, they work better than the craft versions. You might try diluting it a bit so it would flow better. I asked my husband and said that it does have to be runny. Find a piece of dark paper and experiment a bit before deciding if it works or not.

What to use instead of honey: vegetable glycerine, sugar, artificial sweeteners (specifically sugar-alcohols like xylitol or erythritol).

I bought one of those tools recently but haven’t used it yet so I was interested to see it in action. I mostly bought it for masking fluid.

i think the ruling pen may just take some practice to get the accuracy you're looking for. It reminds me of starting out with glass dip pens and learning the correct angle for each pen to flow the best.

You have to shake really hard for the ball to unstuck, and then some more. Then dip a brush and fill the ruling pen with the brush, adjust the opening to thin and hold it sideways almost parallel to the paper. Don`t twist it to make a curve. I like that color palette, only volcano orange seems bit harder to rewet

OK, I’m back with my 4th iced coffee. Now I’m ready to watch your video.

I've heard volcano orange described as the water at the top of Heinz ketchup😂. I love honey based paints, but I have one of your 2021 sets and they're lovely to work with!

Hi Alyona! Where do you get that stamp for the swatch squares? That's the first time I've seen that thing. You have beautiful brushes! Where can I get them and what brand and size? Thank you so much!!

    Hi Alyona,
I saw you were having trouble with the ruling pen. They were used by architects/designers to draw straight lines. That is what they are meant to do. I use an eye dropper to instill ink into the pen; dipping it creates a mess because there is ink on the outside of the pen which causes bleeding of the crisp line these can draw. Hope this helps. Love your videos!

I also recommend Volcano red and Volcano yellow- they are the 2 pigments in the Volcano Orange. What makes them so special is they are rhe only single pigment super granulating colors and they are also in most of the mixes of the 3 new sets. So with the Volcano Yellow and Red you can mix almost all the new sets. I got tubes of them both and they are amazing.

    A. Gallo watercolours are great, I actually got my first set from her after I saw Fig Green, so pretty. You can also buy directly from her, it may be less expensive, not sure. Just sign up for her newsletter. I didn’t know the tool but I found it too much work… I’d rather use a dip pen.

I'm pretty sure Schmincke uses a combination of ox gall and gum Arabic. Their colors are so smoothe and lovely. I've yet to try the A. Gallo but the colors seem really vibrant as well. They are kind of pricey for me. Great video as always it's so fun to see new colors and swatches. 🤗

Yes you are right! I knew Schmincke wasn’t vegan and I always think it’s the honey but no it’s the ox gall. My mistake! 🧡

Try the Leow Cornell fine line painting pen. Never tried that tool you have.

Your goat’s milk (eeewww!) caramel late made me think of iced coffee, so I went to make an iced coffee… well, 3 actually. I did some other stuff stuff and now I’m back to watch your video. Only, I saw your goat’s milk (again, eeeewwww!) caramel late and now I’m off to make my fourth glass of iced coffee 😂

I think the ink pen is mostly used for masking fluid rather than ink pen.

No, that's not true. There are people who use it for (freestyle) calligraphy, too. I already got to know this tool about 15 years ago in a wonderful book by Gottfried Pott, a German font designer and calligrapher.

SCHMINCKE watercolors are NOT honey based!

  • @vani519
    @vani519 2 года назад

Sorry, but I have to correct you. Schmincke does NOT use honey for their watercolors. They use oxgall for the Horadam and a synthetic version of oxgall for the Academy. They say it on their website.

There shouldn't really be a reason not to include honey as bees are not harmed in anyway.
