I’m an American of Irish descent but this film blew my mind, maybe the greatest film I’ve ever seen. I hope India is proud of it’s rich art history, many of us around the world love it.

Satyajit Roy was one of the greatest director in the world . How much emotions in this flim has used is excellent. Proud to be a Bengali. He has achieved a landmark as a director that no one can achieved.

@@shivani7147 The film 'Pather Panchali' by Ray is based on the first part of the Bengali novel 'Aam aatir bhepu' by one of the most famous Bengali writers Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay(1894-1950).
With a hideous budget, amateur cast, black and white picture, no special cameras, he produced the kohinoor of Indian cinema in his debut. He is Satyajit Ray.
From The Encyclopedia of Indian Cinema: "Ray used this meagre plot to elaborate a strikingly innovative narrative, evoking the classic symbols of a newly independent nation, the aftermath of the war and the shift towards Nehruite industrialism. The major scenes in the film, including the children’s romp in the fields where they first encounter a telegraph pole and a train belching clouds of smoke..." It's tradition/modernization, pre-Independence/post-Independence, agraraian society/industrialized society. The 2 children are from a very rural village and after traveling quite a ways from the village they encounter a world they never knew existed (well, the older girl did). The film is NOT widescreen (a quarter of the picture removed) and I've just uploaded it with subtitles and no ugly logo. A shameless plug, if you'd like to watch it in all its glory.

Manik da was highly impressed on watching Roshomon at Venice film festival in 1951. As Toshiro Mifune to Kurosawa, similarly was Soumitra to Manik da, who acted in Satyajit's 14 films.

I am from north-west india and here public is crazy bout Selmon and eyeranmon...lol. And actually Kerela is one of the place of hope but Tarrantino and others win that race. And Nolan being fan favourite of india now, where artists like Terrence Mallick, Nuri bilge ceylan,wes anderson, Martin Scorsesse and Bong joon ho aren't so popular. And not only satyajit ray but also other bengali artists aren't getting the respect they deserve. And no other state of india has produced stars like JC Bose,Tagore,Chattopadhyay,Jemini roy and so on.
