    Thank you very much for the information it was really helpful and I got exactly what I needed to know about primers. I am trying to cover up graffiti on an apartment wall that I was renting

    I find that cleaning up the BIN shellac alcohol base primer that ammonia does a better job than alcohol does and cheaper.

    excellent, informative, thanks! I want to know about what type of paints you can topcoat over primers. For example, I have been told to never put an oil based paint over a latex primer, and vice versa, but others have told me that mixing them is no problem. Confusing.

      It’s okay to apply latex paint over oil-based primer or paint. If you are going to paint oil-based paint over latex I would apply a primer first.

    Thanks for the info but wht would you sue on very old plaster walls that have had wall paper removed and now want to paint on the walls?

      Same issue, my whole house is this way. I used oil primer in the one room I did already because of the old wallpaper glue residue. Other than the super strong odor for a couple weeks, I think it came out well.

    How long can primed areas remain unpainted before primer loses effectiveness??

    • @HDFPainting
      @HDFPainting  3 года назад +1

      Generally, if a primer has be exposed to weather for 6 months it should be re-coated

    must you prime the entire ceiling or just where the water stain is?

    • @HDFPainting
      @HDFPainting  3 года назад +1

      Just the area with the water stain needs to be primed with an alcohol base primer like Bin.

    I want to paint over my existing walls with lighter colors. I got myself pv something primer. Do you recommend?

    Using a primer will mean you need less paint for the covering coat of paint. Generally 1-2 coats instead of 2-3 or more for a good paint cover coat. Plus, the better quality primer/paint the less you need of it. Bejamin Moore is one of the best paint brands out there. $$ though.

      Yes you can. First you should lightly sand the primer with 220 grit sandpaper.

    Can I use a water based paint over an oil based primer?

    I painted resin coated fiberglass interior boat hull, port and starboard sides. I used Rustoleum LATEX Primer, and INTEND to use purchased Rustoleum OIL BASED gloss paint-almond color. Is that a problem, using an oil based paint, over latex primer, and on resin-fiberglass? thanks

    • @HDFPainting

      I don't have experience on boat hull work, and my thought is that oil primer under oil topcoat is a better choice

    Just curious, I was told by an old painter that I could use a water-based primer a regular primer and add a silver to it and I should be able to cover up any stains in one coat. Do you know anything about this adding the silver to the primer?

    • @HDFPainting
      @HDFPainting  2 года назад

      Honestly, I have never heard of adding silver to primer to cover stains. We typically use an alcohol based primer sealer called BIN for stains. Two coats works really well.

      Hi Mark, Ive never heard of adding the silver, But I do know that if you use silver as a primer coat, That the graffiti will not show through and the next coat will cover the job completely. Be sure your top coat has a high pigment coat. Im not a professional, but learned this trick in art school. (All cars are prime red with a light grey coat and then usually two coats of any color. Sorry to hear about the graffiti, Graffiti is willful destruction of property.
      I hope this is you last experience. Good luck… Let me know how it turns out. Take a picture to a McCormick Paint Store. Fine Paints might no be your best way to go $$$$$

    "I'm going to teach you everything there is to know about primer"..
    Doesn't talk about the most important thing about primer, which is the different effects you get from light or dark primers.. 🤔 😉
    Still a good video! Thanks!
