Do you guys have any advice on how to make friends in Japan? 😜

It's a lot harder if you don't live in Tokyo or another major city... I'm in Toyohashi. :P I actually met friends through my husband, who is Brazilian. A lot of people only look for Japanese friends, or people from their own countries, but finding another cultural group who is open and accepting is also a good way to meet people. My Portuguese is terrible, but everyone is super friendly, fun, and they throw a killer barbeque! :)

I made friends through work. There were many other students my age doing "Baito". I went back to Germany but we still keep contact and they even visited me last month. ^^

As somebody who wants to visit and possibly live/work in Japan for a bit, this is really informative. Especially for somebody who is a tad socially awkward. I take as much advise and help as I can get.

For me, it was just getting myself out there and once I made friends with some people, they wanted to introduce me to more people and it grew from there!

Was in Japan for two weeks recently and made three Japanese friends by attending a Meetup (App) language exchange. 🤗 highly recommend. was invited to a friends drink night, and a dinner by those I met. Super kind and respectful people who are keen to make friends and practice English with you.

Finding local community centres and finding out what groups/hobbies are available to get into can be good. I took up Jpns. sign language.
I do think getting to know people is a different experience in country towns and big cities.
Churches are another way to get to know people. Just make sure you find a real church and not a cult. (of course you have to be aware of that last bit w/ Jpns. religions too).
Finding volunteer opportunities can also be a good chance to get to know people.

I feel like it's an issue where if you are a foreigner but you look east Asian, Japanese people won't take interest in you but obviously if you're like white and blonde and you're saying hi to people, people interact with you and treat you well but they'll also just see you as a novelty and never see you as part of their in group or whatever. It's rough.

I’m still building a friend network but I was grateful to a friend I made online years ago because she helped me make some connections outside of my school life in Tokyo which is nice. It’s nice to have friends from different sectors in my life. I still haven’t quite gotten around to making many Japanese friends, but I think it’s because I’m nervous about the language barrier because my conversational Japanese is not very good.

The elephant in the room is that Japan is a lonely place in general. Japanese people are hard to talk to especially if your Japanese is not near perfect.

I have met several Japanese people who tell me particular things about their compatriots without explaining themselves any further! I've had enough of these mysteries! I have several questions about these people, based on my encounters with them! please, I want someone reasonable to answer my questions, to explain things to me until the end without omitting the details, without bad faith! I would like someone to interpret what they answered me!
