I hustled hard between 18 and 26, I worked 7 days a week, 70+ hours. I was making pretty big money. I was so burnt out. My mental health was a disaster. But outside it looked so good. I bought a house, had 2 sports cars. But I was alone and unhappy. I tried to date but realized my social skills were all economic. All my friends were people I worked with and I would only see them at work. Now I look forward to work because its the only thing I have. That’s one way of looking at it. Here’s another. You’re 25, just hanging out and getting drunk with your friends. You get a girl, it’s great for a while, you’re living the dream but she eventually cheats on you and dumps you for a guy who has his stuff together. You have no house, no car, you’re in debt and can’t catch a break from the constant notices in your mail. You got no skills and are constantly jumping from job to job. Life pushes you around and you become victim of circumstances. Now how does that sound? Better count your blessings and believe that you’re in a good position regardless of your current situation.

@@Capitanvolume It’s not just about having a girlfriend, it’s about keeping her as well. They may get with you for your looks, potential, etc. , but eventually that won’t be enough. And you better pray that’s not enough cause the calibre of woman that you attract will most likely be a reflection of you. High quality women won’t take you seriously if you’re in your thirties and have no idea where your life is going. Not to mention that this should not be your priority anyways. If you have the misfortune of getting a woman and start a family before you figure things out, now that’s a special kind of hell. I’ve witnessed far too many and it’s not pretty. Once you’ve been with enough women you’ll realise that there’s more than just getting a girlfriend. Although I would agree with you that working to the point of detriment to your health is counterproductive. Your body, mind, spirit and finances should be equally in great shape.

I went through many years of hustle culture until my body finally sent me the SOS signal two weeks ago. I am now forcing myself to do absolutely nothing "productive", not chasing goals anymore. omg - it is so hard!! I feel guilty all the time. I am panicking about the time going by too fast. My life feels like a house of cards and if I am "lazy" or stopp hustling everything will be collapsing. And there is the feeling of worthlessness. Hustle Culture was my savior from mediocracy. I wanted to be someone, to do something meaningful. And I lost my life in the progress of that. I could not enjoy anything anymore. Everything felt like a "waste of precious time" which I needed to work on my books. Writing felt like a task, not like a hobby anymore. I looked down on people "just living" and enjoying their free time with video games, parties etc. I am thankful that my body told me to stop. Now my mind is clearer, I am living slower. I am learning to feel worthy without my goals, my results or my projects.

This is such a difficult thing to undo, once you get your self-esteem from being this kind of person and not like the others, it's very hard to accept that the others weren't so wrong after all, and maybe closer to the truth than you were. In the end, the best kind of person can learn from their mistakes, is also humble and giving, knows how to stop and listen, knows how to take a compliment or receive help. I think the art of living well and being content is learnt by example, and it takes time to practice.

Now, I'm taking life much slower. I enjoy going outside for a walk, going climbing, exercising, reading, learning Japanese and Spanish, taking more time to cook or bake nice meals that I enjoy (the last one is my favourite. I never knew I enjoyed baking so much! Weird, isnt it?).

They say time is money, so if you want time you have to sacrifice some money. But, time is not coupled to the economy. Money and the economy inflate and deflate, but 60 minutes of your time will always be the same. In fact, as the economy gets worse you're better of enjoying your time because the alternative is to work for lower pay in the worse economy. When your time is valued, then it's good to do work.
Either way, time is too precious to put on a price tag. Even if you're offered lots of money, it wouldn't be worth it if you never got to enjoy life.

    • @langhamp8912

I think hustle culture is quite enjoyable and healthy if it is done in very short spurts. Just like the way high intensity exercise can all sorts of benefits over steady state cardio, hustle culture working allows all sorts of new and challenging work patterns that otherwise you wouldn't get from an 8 to 5 job. And yet no one would expect one to do HIT every single hour of every single workday, for years on end, but that's exactly what's expected with hustle culture.
So why hustle culture? Hustle culture is usually thought of as for intelligent fast-working people; in reality it's for the poor and the young that simply have no safety net, experience, job skills, or education to get jobs with living wages. It's notable that the VAST majority of hustle jobs are below minimum-wage jobs. One easy way to tell if you're in a hustle job is to look at how often drug abuse occurs with employees; if a lot of people are taking drugs (yes, alcohol and smoking are drugs) then you can be sure that's a hustle job.
Hustle jobs are closely related to gig jobs, and they both have in common is unpaid work. A large portion of these jobs is simply waiting around or looking for the next customer. Gig jobs have always existed, but even ten years ago they were the minority of jobs. Over the past 10-15 years, gig jobs have gradually turned into the majority of jobs. Contract workers, truck drivers, programmers, factory workers, UFC fighters, automobile assembly...these are examples of protected work turning into unproteced contract workers.

I still feel guilty if I go a day without working on one of my projects. That I'm wasting my time if I go out for a walk and watch the sun set, when I could be back at home editing a new video for my channel. I've been slowly getting better and better at it, and I've been so much happier and less stressed. I think about all the things that truly make me happy. What my life would look like if I didn't have to work, and how I'd spend my days. I then wondered why I can't just try live my life in the way that I'd like to, while at the same time working on my creative projects. Balance is really the key to everything. A strategy to protect against inflation is through the U.S stock market, especially the S&P500 & various ETFs. Investors must know where to put their money and how to distribute it in order to protect it against inflation while still making a profit, especially during a recession.

Thank you for making this video. I have ADHD and I am mentally disabled, I also have depression and anxiety. In the art community, a lot of artists are trapped by this "hustle culture" and "grind" mentality and it made me insecure for the longest time. I thought I was a bad artist for not posting art almost every single day and it made me lwo-key going crazy. I thought that doing it can help me get followers and help me gain validation. But in the end, although now I have a decent amount of followers, I don't feel happy. Cause I don't feel enough so recently, I stopped... I break up my work into chunks throughout the week. Meaning I still do work at least 5-6 days a week but there are also a good amount of breaks in between so that I can actually have a moment to breathe and spend time with loved ones. And I make sure I at least take a week off every once in a while, like at least once a month. I don't actually stop working but I practice active rest. I included more activities that stimulated my brain but didn't feel like a chore like learning a new language, learning the piano again and I started writing a lot more in my journal.
And you're right about negative things being inevitable. BECAUSE THEY ARE, and if we have a strong system, we are able to handle them and talk to our emotions. A lot of hustle culture too promotes "toxic positivity" and staying positive, saying that you should just stay calm. You wouldn't say "Think positive" when your house is burning down and in this case, your house is also your body. We all have to accept the negative things we feel and find solutions. That's how we really heal...
Hopefully one day, hustle culture just dies...

Hey Struthless, I run a mental health club in my high-school in rural Texas where the attitude to mental health is "suck it up buttercup". However I was so amazed by your videos I just knew I had to get your books and share it with my club. Yesterday I just got out of the mental hospital due to an attempt on my life. However the nurses allowed me to read your book and I practiced your mental exercises in my journal and to my amazement they helped reduced my darkest thoughts into sock puppets that just wanted to avoid pain at all cost. I was hoping by the time I graduate this semester I will be able to buy some more books so at least my club members could share some and practice the ever-so valuable information that is in your books. Thank you so much for your guidance since in the past year since I've started watching you!!! :)

    • @XOChristianaNicole

Personally, I love the “Suck it up, buttercup” mentality.
However, I see it as - I’ve gotta be willing to suck it up, and do whatever it takes, to achieve my goals.
And that includes NOT hustling all the time. This includes tending to my mental and physical health, being of service to my own well-being, so, I may be of my most effective service - in every aspect, of my life.
The more One puts their own well-being first - the more resistance they’ll begin to experience, from the outside world, at the beginning; guilty tripping, what feels like abandonment from those we thought we were closest to, the weak foundation One’s life built upon completely crumbles..
      And so, so much more.
And that’s when “the suck it up, buttercup” mentality, comes in so, so handy.
Because you get to tel the external world, to suck it up - YOU are putting YOUR well-being as first-priority.
And from what I’ve discovered, after being bedridden/housebound for 8yrs., severely disabled, while being neglected and abused by my “caretaker” of a mother, who stressed me out, especially about finances, soooo badly - this “hustle culture” mindset, literally, had me on my death bed..
And as One whom is autistic, and was unknowingly so, during this time - it caused me to run myself down, even further.
      Basic Taoism, 101:
      Do less, achieve more.
      And pray.
      Pray, hard.
That’s when the answers will come.
      In rest, silence, and solitude.
Then, once those answers are received - One will take the appropriate action, when appropriate, towards One’s goals.
Though, external peace is always achieved, by developing internal peace.
And internal peace is developed, by creating a life worth enjoying - not simply, living and hustling.
      Best wishes and warmest regards.

A few years ago I took a pay cut after ‘climbing the ladder’ taking a less stressful job but with way more time for myself and personal creative endeavours. Sure there are ups and down. Some weeks the creativity is flowing, other times it’s flat as a pancake. Learning the signs, accepting it’s not all smooth sailing and most importantly not beating myself were the biggest lessons learned. Also having a ’sustainable core’ that’s not about tickling your own ego is an great way to stay grounded.

But it's quite obvious in the bigger picture that he's all about living a balanced life as well. Yes, he may not say things perfectly all the time, and he may appear contradictory at times. But I'd like to think of him as a guy who knows what he's talking about. He's smart and says a lot of truths! BUT I don't absorb his content as if he were speaking in code. I came across your channel a few days ago, and I really enjoy your videos. I draw, too, although I'm nowhere near your level. I'm an older feller; however, your lifestyle content, coupled with your art content, makes you damn near one of my favorite influencers.
In my opinion, hustle culture is a good thing. You were able to live it without attachments and then break away from it when it served its purpose.
I think the issue is that people decide to become hustlers too late in life. So long, in fact, that hustling is the way instead of a way. Hustling with the responsibilities of being a spouse and parent is hustling backward.
The advice that I give to young adults and teens is that grinding is a young man's game. So do it now. Now is the time to the hard, brutal, difficult stuff while you have the desire, passion, and energy. Make sure your hustle pays into your future, and you will look forward to growing old.
Awesome content. It's great seeing young people give others the tools needed to live a rewarding life.

I always had this sinking feeling about hustle culture. I already felt the sense of burnout listening, watching, and experiencing people work too much, destroying themselves for the profit and maybe clout. I tell people that time is your most precious currency and you never get that back so make it how you want it. Listening to you say all this made me feel more affirm and grounded, super thanks!

Hussle culture is like RedPill. There are a lot of young men who need it. And some need it a little bit, and some do not. It’s not a place you’re meant to stay in. The idea is to grab what’s useful, leave what isn’t, grow up and move on to making your life better. Your life isn’t something to slave for, but something to live for.
Not everyone is entrepreneurial, but everyone needs a bit of entrepreneurial-ship. Some more than others. We are human but all unique In different ways. We shouldn’t try to fit in one shoe.

Insightful. I think people tend get lost in those communities and it can easily become toxic when it overtakes their entire identity. Balance is essential, and moderation seems difficult for a lot of people. Going from a helpful message of "personal growth is important for men" to something darker like "women are evil" is a misogynistic leap that many men seem to fall into these days when they begin a self-help journey. It's all easier when everyone's in it together. No one is your enemy unless you make an enemy of them. :)

I was thankfully in the hustle culture just for half a year. But nevertheless, I still got burnt out. And the worst part about it was that I didn't even come close to my goal. I set the bar way too high.
But thanks for the video. You really put my thoughts into words.

I had a very similar journey to you. One day I just went blank, couldn’t hustle and saw everything I was missing and it occurred to me I was paying a price, and the deal was unfair. I am a father and husband, and while I achieved moderate success “hustling,” my true success wakes me up on the weekends and greets me smiling when I get home every day. I’m thankful for everything I’ve learned and achieved while hustling, and took away so many tools for providing for them, they should be my focus from now on.

I lived hustle culture before it was known as hustle culture, and maybe I was naive about it all, but in the end it destroyed me. It took all the little pieces of my humiliated ego to scrape enough willpower to pick myself and walk away from the useless dead thing I had become. Nowadays I find myself caring less and less about the latest trends or what the Joneses are up to. I find delight in the simple stuff, just stepping off the madness, and just focusing on my own little obsessions, with slippery deadlines. It's more in sync with my body's own rhythm. Thankfully I'm single and have no dependents, no debts. And best of all, I'm still alive and made enough friends that I can still trudge along doing my art. Having some sort of ambition is one thing but allowing that ambition to take over your life will ultimately destroy you. To hell with all that, it's best to just be.

Appreciate this video. As a person who went into hustle culture for different reasons (but the same essence), I feel like we've reached similar conclusions.
I still work hard, I still have a productivity and knowledge management system, I still am not complacent and give up, but thanks to compartmentalizing I'm able to give each aspect its worth.
I actually calculated the time difference between hustle culture and a balanced life.
I used to "work" an average of 10.5 hours a day to achieve what I wanted to do. Now it's around 3.5 hours per day which includes deep work to more or less achieve the same goals.
The thing is, humans tend to forget in the moment that life is actually a group of seasons. It's kinda like sports.
Do the champions win every game? No.
Do marathon runners run at the same speed of 100m runners? No.
Do Formula One drivers race every single day of the year? No.
Energy management in the highest-performing professional sports around the world is a big factor in their successes. The creator environment needs that too, because as I have experienced recently, mental strain can lead to physical pain that can keep you out for weeks.

I realized that I have been trapped in it for years. It made my life miserable because I did things of which I thought other people would want me to do. Reorganized my social media feeds, got back into making art and started taking my ADHD meds again. Plus, I found a study programme that fits my character really well and I actually enjoy studying now. I felt like what you said about a burnout being inevitable is true for me. Was scared of it at first (more scared that I would quit studying), but planning for it will definitely help. Your video's to me are like a snack you save for later, because you know you're gonna need it. And you never disappoint. Thank you for putting in the effort!
