Hi! I'm one of the original creators of Regravitified. It's been like 4(?) years since we've released that first patch. There's a bunch of cool changes in there, like Shooting Star having the instant gravity dive, hyperdrive's gravity dive being buffed, GP Accumulator and Throttle being GP effecient, and so on. Admittedly there's board changes even I forgot about, but most of them went untouched. We started by giving everything the ability to drift and boost, like the original Riders, then we assigned additional stat buffs to specific Gear changes, so most Gear changes (especially the ones that change your board into different rides) gives extra speed, GP, etc. Similarly, we added in different archetypes as well, like Top Speed Characters who have the highest cruising speed of their type (I believe this was Sonic), Boosting Characters who get an extra second or 2 of boost (I *think* this was Shadow for Speed type, it's been so long, my apologies), and then Accel characters who have the best acceleration (for Speed type, I believe this was Jet). I also worked with the Sonic Riders Tournament Edition, and Sonic Riders DX teams for a while as well, and there are alot we tried to carry over, like Tornado Traps and such. The way the gears in ZG are programmed compared to OG Riders is boundless. OG Riders were limited to specific stats, special flags (effects), and a few other things, but in ZG, the amount of creative design was wide open, we could've made some of the most bonkers and fun-to-play boards ever. Alas, we did eventually, end development. The patch out now remains a proof of concept, but in the future if any where to ever be interested in picking up where the old team left off, I wouldn't mind asking around for some old data sheets we made to locate where every gear, character, and stat is located with the code.
Hey there! While like I’ve said, I think the gameplay took some hits from it, but still the mod makes a ton of really impressive changes so huge respect for working on a mod of this scale In the first place. Hope the project could be picked back up at some point, since I do believe the idea is so strong. And the features you’ve mentioned here seem quite fun to mess with lol.
Also, I would like to point out that, Regravitified was less of a "fix" and more of a proof of concept. It was massively unfinished, so you're critiques about us trivializing the challenge is very fair, but I do think it's worth noting that since we also worked on the OG Riders modding, our focus when it came to balancing the game was on TE and DX. Regravitified never actually got any time to be balanced. Since I managed our social media at the time, I quite literally rushed the guys to make a patch just showing off what we could do, editted the trailers, and posted it on time before the Sonic movie releases. We planned to balance the game and do more with it, but as I mentioned, that unfortunately fell through.
@@odd-eyesvon Makes sense. Well it worked quite well since I do like the ideas, but as you said the balancing is the only real issue, in my opinion at least. Best wishes man, and thank you for the look into the development of Regravitified. Cool stuff!
@@odd-eyesvon This was very interesting to read. I myself am not a huge fan of RG, but it's interesting to know that it's more of a proof-of-concept instead of a "massive design overhaul" as the marketing for it would suggest. Still I'm with GDub on this one, the concept is strong and it would be interesting to see it developed further.
I for one am biased and have nostalgia so this is something I definitely wish to check out. Thank yoooouuu for making it known. Awesome stuff to know. Enjoyed the video & have a nice day everyone.
I had no idea about this mod, but honestly, it looks really cool, as I said in the Riders 1 review, I like ZG a lot, the gravity mechanic, the gear selection strategy, but I never thought about the game actually just being in a slower flow and maybe increasing it would make it better without changing the game a lot As I said in the Riders 1 review, I like Regravitified as well, it made me have a lot more fun with ZG because I already liked the game, I like the Riders 1 mechanics placed along ZG, and I love a lot of what ZG itself has to offer, getting those insane speeds while going downhill with a wind burst surrounding you, I think it's a really fun mod, and probably will still like it a lot, minus the things I dislike such as making every character have their ability already unlocked and making a part of them no matter the gear you choose I will check the mod out and definetly will give it a try, sounds really fun! But now I'm wondering if maybe one day we'll have a mod that adds the flow of Better ZG with the mechanics of Riders 1 like Regravitified, but like, really implementing everything like it really was in Riders 1, with the Riders 1 trick system and the smooth and satisfying drift, while maintaining some of the core mechanics of Zero Gravity like the gear parts giving you everything you need, no characters already entering on races with their types even when the gear does not have that upgrade, now THAT would be the definitivy Zero Gravity experience for me, I would LOVE to play the game like that
Personally I do think Zero Gravity would've been much better off if it didn't drop so many mechanics from Riders 1, and that's why I mostly play with the Regravitified mod. I understand not enjoying it as much but for me it just does all the things I wanted. Minus improving the track designs to fit the more powerful mechanics, but right now that's not really possible and the tweaks they've done still help with that. The reason this mod exists isn't due to a disagreement with the direction Regravitified was going, but rather just as an alternative for those playing on real hardware (and partially for Wiimote users as RG only supports GC controllers) and grand prix players (RG is really, really unstable in those cases!). Great video, and I hope this helps more people get some enjoyment out of Zero Gravity. It's a game that honestly wasn't that far off from being great and it's a little sad most just dismiss it.
I did have a question for you TDRR. How did you go about making the mod? Did you find old gecko codes from the RG project and select the best ones to enhance the experience, or did you reverse engineer the game to find everything? Because if you found the structs all by yourself, you’re an absolutely phenomenal coder. That took our guys a few weeks to figure out.
@@odd-eyesvon they're just codes from RG. I do know PowerPC ASM enough to make my own, but I've only done that for Melee modding (for my Melee XT mod, and the XT Alternate Stage Loader), since that game has been documented far more than Zero Gravity.
Im glad this exists as it really redeems Zero Gravity for me. However, I don't think its better than Riders 1 or even Free Riders as the track designs in those games are better and with more memorable setpieces in my opinion, but this is still really good. But Zero Gravity still had the worst story mode, since most cutscenes are just character models standing around expositing. Id rather have the pngs from Free Riders than that, as it may have been low budget (as it was a Kinect game, so optimising the controls must have been astronomically expensive for them to make a more detailed story mode), but they were more expressive than most other in game Sonic cutscenes, and that's not something I can say or excuse as much for TSR.
@GDubA Free Riders is my favourite actually! Controls worked perfectly! I just love pretending I'm on a real hoverboard! I like it even more than Riders 1!
If this is your mod i think you should make a trailer of it, or at least tag the mod's name somwhere in this video, like that it may reach more players or at least let the ppl know how it works when searching the mod name in yt lol, finding a trailer or this video, just imo idk
Huge shout-out to anyone involved with this mod! Amazing stuff.
