Trying to beat the summer sweat in Japan? We’ve tracked down the coolest cafés this side of the Yamanote Line for you to chill out in Tokyo! We’re continuing our Tokyo marathon walking tour from Yanaka Ginza shopping street, through “otaku” (nerd) paradise, Akihabara, all the way to the iconic red brick exterior of Tokyo Station and stopping off for a taste of old school Japan at Tokyo’s best hidden retro cafés along the way! Here’s how to stay cool in summer in Japan like a local, even if you are walking the entire Yamanote Line train loop!

📍 ROUTE INFO
We’re following the Yamanote Line in the 外回り “soto mawari” outbound (clockwise) direction, this time starting a short walk from Nippori Station at Tokyo’s iconic Yanaka Ginza shopping street.
Route: Nippori Station → Ueno Sakuragi Atari, Think café → Uguisudani Station → Ueno Station → Ameyoko Shopping Street → Okachimachi Station → Akihabara Electric Town & Station → Amanoya (near Kanda Shrine) → Kanda Station → Tokyo Station

🥐 Think bakery, tucked away in an Instagrammable cluster of converted Showa-period (1926-1989) wooden houses in Ueno Sakuragi Atari between Nippori and Ueno Station bakes fresh artisan breads and sweet treats all day long. It is a short walk from the beautiful Yanaka Cemetery, which is lined with cherry blossoms each spring, making it a popular destination for photographers and tourists. Luckily, this café is still a well-hidden secret among Tokyo locals as it only recently opened!
🍧 Amanoya is a small kakigori (shaved ice) parlour founded by an angry samurai with over 177 years of history in its just desserts! Specialising in sweet amazake (non-alcoholic sake), Amano’s desserts are sophisticatedly sweet and can be found just one minute away from Tokyo’s famous Kanda Shrine!

上野アメ横は、中国やら韓国やら多文化の店が進出、すっかり変わってしまったから都内ですぐ行けるが行かなくなった!!
Ahhhh I love Ameyoko. Good for getting non-Japanese foods (especially fresh herbs! Vietnamese mint!!! My heart sings hahaha) and occasionally very cheap tomatoes, 10/10. This is my side of town so it's nice to see you guys walk around it. :)

It’s the Marunouchi building! It’s supposed to be modelled on one in Amsterdam and it’s so pretty with the brick 😍. There’s not too much of a reason to get out this side unless you’re heading to the palace really, but it makes for good photos!

暑かったでしょう。でも、パンは美味しそうだし、かき氷も美味しそう。本格的に醸造された甘酒には、肌白効果があると、どこかの医学部が研究報告してました。大学名を失念してすみません。研究には、神田の老舗の甘酒も使われたそうです。
