Not according to Scott Strapp (singer and lyricist). It refers to straying from oneself, entering a very dark place (via substance abuse), battling one's way out, and then reconnecting in a place of groundedness. Reconnecting to self.

I'll admit it, I was a fan early on (not a huge fan but I did buy their first two albums to add to my collection) but Scott Stapp ruined that for me. I never jumped on the ridiculous hate train (or cared one way or the other about the religious overtones) but I just moved on after a brief time. While its hard to feel sorry for guys who reached such heights of success in a short time, Mark Tremonti and Scott Phillips are both very underrated on the scene, I'll just say that.

I'm glad to find people who have open minds about Creed. Many rock bands that made it big after Kurt Cobain and before Jack White (1994-2002) are hated for the sake of hatred, which is sad. Creed have 12 Top 10 hits on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart from 1997-2009:
"My Own Prison" (#7 in 1997)
    "Torn" (#3 in 1998)
    "What's This Life For" (#1 in 1998)
    "One" (#2 in 1999)
    "Higher" (#1 in 1999)
    "What If" (#3 in 2000)
"With Arms Wide Open" (#1 in 2000)
"Are You Ready" (#4 in 2000)
    "My Sacrifice" (#1 in 2001)
"One Last Breath" (#5 in 2002)
    "Weathered" (#7 in 2003)
    "Overcome" (#4 in 2009)
Of those 12, four of them crossed over to the Billboard Hot 100 and became Top 10 hits there:
    "Higher" (#7 in 2000)
"With Arms Wide Open" (#1 in 2000)
    "My Sacrifice" (#4 in 2002)
"One Last Breath" (#6 in 2002)
Creed released four studio albums, three of which sold in the millions, and one of which sold in the tens of millions. These are their three million-selling albums:
My Own Prison; released 1997; 6X Platinum
(Songs: "My Own Prison," "Torn," "What's This Life For," "One")
Human Clay; released 1999; Diamond (11X Platinum)
(Songs: "Higher," "What If," "With Arms Wide Open," "Are You Ready")
    Weathered; released 2001; 6X Platinum

So here's my take: It's interesting that it gave you "church" vibes, because while it is a love song, it's not towards a woman, but a love song towards the Lord Jesus Christ. Scott Stapp is a professing believer in Jesus Christ, yet he seemed to struggle with also desiring the things of the world. In his pursuit of worldly success, he often seemed to 'hide' his faith. As such, his lyrics were a bit disguised, but his heart would shine through none the less.
Those who know the Lord, know the truth of the Scripture that says "In His presence is fullness of joy and at His right hand are pleasures forevermore." When He is with us, we are free. Free from worries, stress, and fear ("I'm careless, I believe."). He sings of the 'perfect love' given to him, and that is the love of God, poured out through His Son Jesus Christ. It is Jesus who is his 'sacrifice.' Christ is referred to as THE sacrificial lamb. The sacrifice of justice. He lived a perfect life and sacrificed Himself for our sins. Justice was due. Our sins NEEDED to be punished, otherwise God would not be fair, just and good. So the Son of God became man and sacrificed His life for ours. He took the punishment that was due to us. And THIS is what Scott is singing about. The perfect love that God gives that frees from all guilt and condemnation. The perfect love that gives solace and peace and joy to the hearts of men. And when we willfully rebel against God (like I think Scott had), we greatly desire to restore that fellowship. "I just want to say hello again." Because in His presence alone is fullness of joy.

I was thinking along the same lines as they (Creed) were the initial Christian Rock band that led to Alterbridge....where in the lyrics, there is a true sense of what the word "Sacrifice" is supposed to mean and with our own 'Free Will', we humbly give ourselves to Christianity when we become 'Born again' and that 'Again' is referenced in the lyrics later in the song....at the 5:35 mark

This song is soooo beautiful. I love “Hello my friend we meet again, it’s been a while where should we begin”. Perfect. Its like he’s talking to Most High. This song is about life and how he’s struggled a lot with addiction. Scott’s a recovering alcoholic/addict and so when all these 2000 rock bands criticized him for being “holy” and then drinking, that bugged me. He’s human it’s a struggle. It’s not something to mock. All their songs are about life struggles. So when Fred Durst commented I’m like yeah not cool. G-d forbid your struggles in the future. Something I admired years later with James Hetfield. He grew up and understand the struggle is real. Doesn’t have to be just about drugs, alcohol is an addiction too.

This is a song about going after the things in this world, and sacrificing friendships/what's truly important, for the fleeting and ultimately empty pursuit of possessions and fame. It could be a song with a neglect of Jesus in mind, or a former love, or dearly held friends, or even the sacrifice of who he himself is truly suppose to be in life. And when Scott sings near the end, when the song slows down, "Above all the others we'll fly." --- well, the way that he sings "fly" is just about the most delicate and tender thing that I have ever heard. During that part of the video for this song, Scott is in a schoolbus that is set up as a shrine to his beloved childhood days. It is an awesome video and an amazing song. Epic!

Growing up around mettwlica and motley crue fans I would roll up in my 5.0 dropped on daytons they would try and clown when they heard me listening to Creed. I let them have their fun until one day I picked up my girl and we was going out and one of my friends Mario who was 6’2 and had long hair and was a die hard metalica fan was kicking it with all of our friends in the parking lot to the public housing projects we grew up in. I heard one of my friends saying bro don’t do it man don’t do it so I looked over and Mario said to my girl “when your ready to be with a real man who doesn’t listen to Creed come to me and I’ll show you a real man”. I stopped and my girl said come on it’s not worth it. But I walked to him and said don’t just stand there real man get your hands up and defend yourself, so he pretended to just stand there then tried to sucker punch me but I ducked and shifted to my left then started dropping bombs on him. 2 of my other friends pulled me off of him saying come on T you gonna kill him. I broke his jaw in 8 places and both orbital bones and his nose and 3 teeth. I walked off and left with my girl and turned on my alpine and bumped higher from Creed as I rolled out. Not proud cuz we grew up together and he knew better but he was high and since he had beat up a couple of our friends who btw were lames he thought he could bark with the big dawgs cuz he had gotten big, he wasn’t ready. Point of my story is that Creed is a good band with great music and just cuz you like the music don’t mean you a punk or soft. Ask limp bizuits lead singer who was talking the same shit about Creed until he bumped into Scot Stapp back stage at an awards show. Scott challenged limp bizcuits to a fight and he said no cuz he heard that Scott was an amateur boxer who was going to turn pro but chose music instead.

Although many haters criticize Creed for lots of good reasons, some of the songs they produced and recorded are great, and this is one of them. The guitar is especially beefy, combined with the bass track. That sound is what made me seek out a Mesa Dual Rec.

Lex, your very close in your assessment of the song. Creed was a Rock, Christian grunge band. All his music was very spiritual and very good. Listen to more of creed you'll enjoy it. By the way Creed is no long together they kind of self-destructed at the height of their career being the number one band in sales in the late 90's

It's a love song for sure. But your thinking Woman. Like I said before. Scott's Dad was a Presbyterian Minister here in Orlando. They kicked Scott out of Presbyterian University for Smoking weed. Scott formed the band Creed. He stops short saying they are a Christian Rock band. But do say that they sing song's of inspiration.
    If you would react to:
    "Higher" you'll understand.
He sacrificed some of his behaviors or maybe all.
" When you are with me I'm free" He's talking about the Higher power. And his Dad "The Preacher" should be his hero. he was Raised up in the Church. People here in Orlando love Scott Stapp. Another band that spun off of Creed is Alter Bridge with Miles Kennedy. Miles left Alter Bridge to become the lead Singer for Slash. And Miles far as I know you heard Miles Kennedy when you saw Slash. What you really saw was Miles Kennedy and the Conspirators featuring Slash. 😎🌴🐊🌞😜🤔 That's what we need in the World. INSPIRATION. THAT'S WHAT CREED SINGS ABOUT. WHAT THEY WERE DOING WAS TO REACH PEOPLE THAT FELT LOSS OR LEFT OUT.

"Arms Wide Open" is my favorite Creed song. You should dig up a lyric video and do that song for a video. I've heard them being called a Christian rock group. I don't know about all that, but they have some great songs. The lead singer, Scott Stapp swallows his words much the same way a lot of singers did, Eddie Vedder comes to mind as a good example. It seemed to be the style of the time.

Every successful relationship requires sacrifice. You have two people with different desires. If they come together successfully that means they both sacrifice what they want individually for what they need to stay together. He's coming out of a drug addled state and trying to put himself back together and sacrificing his addiction for his future with that person. Now that may not be entirely what Creed meant, but it's how I hear the song.

Maybe somebody will read this but I have to make the comment. No one gets what this song is about. Scott Stapp is an evangelical Christian. His bandmates didn't want to be a "Christian" rock band so he wrote lots of stealth ( and sometimes not so stealthy ) songs about his relationship with Christ. My Own Prison is not so subtle. My Sacrifice is a love letter to Jesus... that he believes was sacrificed to set him free. The song is wrapped around a loving friendship theme but the core is what I said.
Scott stumbled in his early adulthood and recovered. Creed was his personal mission to spread a good message. They were big for a few years and then he stumbled again and the band broke up to distance themselves from his fall. Someone asked why this Creed is scoffed at. They are scoffed at because he was so open about his beliefs and people decided he was a fraud when he stumbled. As if someone who calls themselves a follower of Christ can't possibly be sincere and stil screw up. Fact. Hope this helps someone.
