Poor tortoise being covered in olive oil. Thank you for helping him out. What a beautiful shell he has.
I can see you’re an expert someone has just gave me two tortoises They do not put them into hibernation do I have to continue with this or can I just put them into hibernation thank you😊
Hi Eric, apologies for late reply. It really depends on history, condition and species of tortoise before you can look at hibernation options. The two hibernation videos may I have on here may help you draw a conclusion
What a difference
Fortunately there are less ‘oiled’ tortoises these days. However the occasional scrub with tamodine after a bath with a soft toothbrush with any tortoise is a good idea. Especially in corners such are around the tail.
Hi. Recently I adopted some wild caught testudo graeca terrestris in United States. Do you think this kind of subspecies can be safely hibernated ? I won’t try that for the first year. Since it’s already too much stress for them.
i hope you’re doing well with the gracea over in the states. Apologies I missed this message initially. I’d recommend a period of winter cooling to simulate seasons at the very least. Tortoises bodies get a bit confused if kept at too constant temperature all year round. If they are healthy and a good weight I would keep the hibernation quite short 6-8 weeks maybe as they aren’t likely to sleep long on the wild.
Great video why did you stop making videos
Good point, I’ll try and start up again soon :)
Don't be a stranger we here in Texas watching your videos
@@commercialelectrician133 i'm back making videos :)
What olive oil oh my god NO
Hi, ive recently taken on an elderly whitei, unfortunately it the same situation as this video her shell is covered in oil may i ask which brand of washing powder did you use ? x
Hi, it's more about the abrasive and de greasing power of a powder. I used an own brand basic and as I mentioned before take it stead and rinse well after. Good luck and glad you've found the video helpful. Whitei really benefit from help to warm up. Greenhouses are an absolute winner if you have space, but failing that a cold frame and basking lamp. 160 watt combi arcadia should help warm her up nicely, but if shes never had access to a lamp before... again build up hours gently along with any diet change. Happy to advise more should you need it. You can contact me via tortoiseclub.org.
Hi there. Your tortoise videos have been very helpful thanks.
I have some new Pre Alpin Testudo Fibre loose and also Original Cobs approx 1kg of each in original packaging if you would like FOC. I bought them for an old tortoise but there's no way he will touch the food with it mixed in. I could post to you from Dorset ( just don't want it all to go to waste if some if your tortoises will eat it) . Let me know if you could make use of it. ~ Emma
Hi Emma, thank you that’s super kind but I’d urge you to persevere with the smallest of flakes on his usual feed. By autumn he should take a heavier sprinkle just when he needs it. Sometimes infusing with flavour can help. Short term fresh cut tomato juice can work. Mixed maybe with a few flakes of grated carrot for taste? Let me know how you get on :)
@@tortoise_matters OK. Many thanks for your info.....Will keep trying! 🐢
Which plants do you recommend to grow for tortoises in your garden
Tortoise table is a good place to start, depending on your tort will depend on what you should grow. Lots of packs available online that are good. Collecting seeds yourself is a better option though
There are some good variety seed mixes you can buy online like ebay. Seeds I personally like cornflower, plantain, wild chicory, evening primrose, hedge bedstraw, cats ear and soft thistle. Core Plant picks are mallow, hibiscus, grapevine leaf, opuntia and rose. Tortoise table do have a comprehensive list to help feed a broad diet throughout the year. The tlady weed book is also good for the basics.
