honestly, i think these regulations are a result of a lack of direction for f1. They want the fastest, most sustainable, safest and cheapest cars while having the best, fairest racing under a cost cap and want all that to happen from a set of regulations that will 100% for sure bring f1 fans what they want
f1 doesnt know what it wants. how can you design a set of regulations like that?

    • @DctrBread

very true, they want it all. imo F1 would be better off if they recognize that its just not gonna have the most dramatic racing. Low tier formats with no downforce and more stable cars are always going to have more excitement and close racing, so f1 should probably just give up on that. it only needs the prestige of being the format with the most cutting edge engineering and elite drivers. To that end, they need only to create regulations that encourage market-relevant R&D, and a budget limit only for the sake of sanity. As it is, the majority of engineering work done in motorsport fails to feed back into road cars.

It's all pandering to manufacturers that constantly complain about everything. Cost caps, green fuels, hybrid engines, more electrification, these are all things the manufacturers lobbied for. Then you have different manufacturers lobbying for different approaches so the FIA makes a half-assed compromise to please everyone (which ends up pleasing no one).
The new engine regs are these weird more electric hybrid power trains because FIA desperately wanted new manufacturers to join after Honda initially announced leaving and no one is interested in non-electric powertrains. Then because the current manufacturers were affraid of Audi having too big of an advantage, they crippled the regs further to this frankenstein formula so they still have an advantage but not so big that it would make Audi walk away. Then when they realised the PUs would be too weak for current F1 performance expectations, they tried to put a bandaid on it by adjusting the aero regs to make the new PUs viable. So overall we get this mess of mix-mash regs for the entire car in order for the FIA to hit their commercial desires.
It's all politics at the end, usually centered around money.

Yeah because f1 is one big fast advertising board nowadays. The whole 50/50 split is proof of that. Why on earth a racecar would need to be efficient and hybrid assisted? In 2024 we can make 1000+hp easy on a full combustion engine. And don't even try convincing me that they actually give a shit about the envorniment. It's just advertising so that the new tree hugger fans can go wow, f1 is so nice, they think of the planet wow no way.
Also it's a great way of advertising hybrid systems for car brands in their roadcars.

This is 2014 all over again, we will see the consequences of pushing out Ross Brawn and taking in Stefano Domenicali. The problem with Stefano is that the progress on F1 has stalled. He is more political and business but he doesn't understand the technical side of what the car and the fans need. The fact that he listened to the teams , took away the front electric motors that would support the green movement and would also generate alot of energy under braking. A calendar that seems like a child picked the destinations. I only see F1 going down if this continues. Ross Brawn didn't care about the team needs if it impacted the sporting side negatively

More buses and trucks use an MGU-H than road cars, that’s the image that F1 is moving away from despite having pioneered the technology. So they're okay with chickening out of innovation and compromising speed. • @slam_down

I rather they postpone things to 2027 or 2028.
    - We can't have more sustainability by having less thermally efficient engines.
    - We shouldn't be combusting more fuel under the guise of "bio-fuel."
    - DRS was heavily criticised when it came about, but at least drivers & teams have to work around the sudden aero & balance changes it brings. There's nothing skill-full about just magically having extra electric boost by simply closing a gap. Might as well just call it "FanBoost", but hey FE fans will argue the drivers had to work their pretty smiles off the track to earn even that. At this point we might even hire Tilke to redraw all tracks with "Attack Mode" strips
    - Active Aero YES, Finally! The rest of the aero rules I'm less annoyed about since I'm old enough to have seen F1 long enough to know that aerodynamicists always finds a couple ways no matter how impossible it seems.

Do you think using rules that include valved air ducts could be used to reduce drag, increase downforce, or adjust balance would be an interesting idea? I imagine that opening, closing or restricting airflow through ducts could be done in a very reliable way with safe failure modes in ,most cases. I don’t know if that’s safer or easier than having to design wing elements that fail into a high downforce configuration. Maybe ducts just aren’t that effective and are too complex, heavy, or large compared to other solutions for improving efficiency with the 50/50 hybrid, rear axle powertrain.

It is so long as it doesn't stall
The diffusers however cause two major problems
1- They are really really hard to design well.
2- They suck up shit from under the car. Lesving to the impossibility of racing in the wet and the cars lifting debris from the track.
However, the main reason they are on the chopping block is because aero as a whole is being downgraded to reduce energy spent per lap.

Interesting to see the FIA reducing floor and diffuser aero in favour of larger rear wings, since floor aero is more efficient, surely it would make more sense to apply the wing changes and in washing boards to current floor regs, cars have more downforce so laptimes are faster, and teams don't have to engineer to different floor regs

Removing the ONE thing that road cars are beginning to implement must be among the dumbest things ever. I said this when this was first announced and it still makes no sense. Introducing active aero makes sense, as that something even simpler cars have. They should also introduce active suspension for the same reason: F1 cannot be a series that doesn't even match what's sold on a 60k road car. That list is active aero, MGUH and active suspension. At least.
Failing to make the tanks smaller also goes down as a huge, well, failure. I believe an MGUH would help in this respect, ironically.
I'm glad they're making the cars shorter behind the driver. But now that the MGUH is gone they should have made that even shorter. This is just dumb imho.
Also, spec end plates: nonono. F1 must avoid using spec parts unless it's absolutely necessary. Or just get a Dallara chassi for everyone and call the series Indy or something. This is truly ridiculous.
I do think the new rules will work, that's not the problem here. They just feel like they asked the UN to pen them down.
What happened to the 6 gear gearbox? Still a thing?

@@Hungary_0987 I didn't say how they were going to implement it. The cars are more than a metre longer than the 90s. Some of that is safety, most of it is designers wanting a longer car for aero benefit - even though we all agree the aero is part of the problem with close racing, and we all know the cars being so long is problem at tight corners. And we know the cars being heavy makes it difficult to stop them going out of track limits or hitting each other because of momentum. They aren't as fun to drive as agile, smaller cars, and they aren't a fun to watch. 200mm here and there makes no difference, and 30kg won't matter (even when they may end up adding weight instead). The unsprung weight is really high, because they are asked to build stupid tyres for stupid cars. As Scarbs said, the suspension is designed for aero benefit not low weight.

It's the same damn argument every single time. 2009, 2014, 2019, whatever. Every single time a new idea came out, people cried over how painfully slow the new cars were going to be. Instead, you ended up with cars that didn't go so fast on the straights, but managed to beat the old cars in almost every other way.
What people need to understand is that these are just concept cars showing general ideas of what they are going to be like. The constructors will always research these concepts and push out something better and more efficient for the sake of winning the championships. This is the beauty of F1 not being a spec series: Even with these regulations, nothing is set in stone in terms of techs and R&D. You cannot truly anticipate how the cars are going to be made and upgraded in reality.
And don't even try to claim that this will be the slowest F1 ever. This sport has come a long way that even today's backmarker can easily outperform the legendary McLaren MP4/4. You need to be extremely backward to be slower than the cars in the 80s, let alone those cars without any wings in the 50s.
