When To Redeem Cash Back on Credit Cards

  • The question of when to redeem cash back on a credit card may at first sound simple, but to get the most value requires a bit of thinking. Sometimes there are annual fees, other times there are redemption thresholds. Generally, if its in cash form only then redeeming as soon as you can is best. However, if its cash or points, there might be more value to be had if you use them as points on airfare or hotels.

    I started researching tips on saving money and spending less because I'm starting a Ph.D. program and me, my husband , and 2 kids would be living off of the stipend I would get with my assistantship (which is low, but at least I won't have student loans)
    I realized that I don't want any loan, I'm happy not being in debt, and hopefully by the time I get my Ph.D. I would get a job where I also don't need debt.
    I want to thank you for all your videos because they did give me hope that what I want (which is to not be in debt) is tangible! I don't "need" a lot of the things that I "want", that is where I started with your videos, and I ended up subscribing!!

    Love your vids. It's worth mentioning that some banks will waive your annual fee if you ask nicely, and if you've been a good customer.

    • @BeatTheBush

      And their determination of this is pretty black box. Sometimes they will, other times they wont. If you ask to cancel the card, they might cancel it or they might offer you the waived annual fee.

    What I like to do is wait until the cash back amount is equal to one of the bills that is charged onto the credit card. I'll redeem that amount before the statement period ends. So it's kinda like receiving a month of free service for that specific charge. And the money otherwise spent on paying it off can now go towards something else like savings or whatever.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  7 лет назад

      Ahhh you like the redeem for a charge method. Cash is cash to me, I would just get it asap as their policy allows.

    I'm just starting with credit card rewards. I had Amazon shopping points and I use them for Holiday shopping. I just was approved for cash back cards and Amex does statement credit which is OK with me. If I want to save my rewards, I can always deposit that amount of credits into savings instead of paying toward the card balance.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  5 лет назад

      You can do either but sometimes, depositing into an checking or savings is better.

      I think of credit card cash back as cash. It's not free money but money you earned through effort. So I just put it in the checking account and save it. Different way to look at it I guess.

    Aloha state of mind I'm going to guess and say because the Gold card has an annual fee and your canceling the card in 11.5 months since it's a transfer i'm going to guess and say yes. there your points.
    however you can't do a product change from the gold to the blue you can apply for a blue card but you can't do a product change.

    I do have a couple hotel cards but I use them rarely. I find I am using them for small purchases around $20 and clearing it shortly after. Then it sits for a month or two until I do it again. This continues until I have a break for off time and I stay at a hotel.

    the 3 ways to redeem cash back are
    1 a statement credit
    2 some banks and financial company's will direct deposit a check into your checking account
    3 gift cards.
    most cards points/cash back don't expire except Citi there double cash back card from what I hear there cash back does expire i'm not sure if it's 6 months or a year but it does expire.
    With Discover have you noticed in the gift card cash back section they have a couple of mistakes they Neiman Marcus under fashion when Neiman Marcus is a department store have you noticed this? with cvs they have them under health and beauty
    when cvs is coded as a drug store? since you have way more credit cards than I do have you noticed on there gift card redemption any other credit card company other than Discover have you noticed any mistakes? what do you think about Discovers cash back center gift card? they seem to be missing quite a few places in health and beauty like they don't have Evelyn and crabtree , stores no Walmart or target under restaurants no Ruby Tuesdays how do you feel about there gift card redemption center?
    I have 2 cash back cards Discover More I redeem my cash back close to the end of the year like around November last 3 years I redeemed a Red Lobster gift card so while Holiday shopping I also eat out.
    My American express blue cash card I redeem for a statement credit.

      You'll have to spend to time to figure out if the money every expires. It also costs you inflation to keep it in there. Cash it out and stick it in a high yield savings and you get 1.2%.

    Can you transfer points to another card? For example I just opened a Amex Gold Premier but I don't intend on keeping it a full year (will cancel after 11 1/2 months) and paying the annual fee. If I have points left can I transfer those to my Amex Blue Card then cancel the gold card?

  • @roberttaylor8906

    One of the cards I'm going to apply for, the DuPage CU Platinum Rewards card, offers 5% back on Charitable donations with no caps. However, when I asked specific questions to the phone rep in the credit/loan department, she told me that there's a $4.95 fee to redeem your points?! That's the first I've heard of such a thing, but actually, my plan for charitable donations ongoing once I get this card is, instead of donating every month, save the money in my Insight savings account, and then after 12 months donate all the money I'd otherwise have donated each month. The main purpose is to time this to hit high donation matches, as periodically many charities will get grants or other sponsorships to match your donation, even 2 or 3 times over - I once got a mailer that offered 10x donation matching! This will maximize your impact. But also, by donating all at once, you can redeem all of your points at the same time without it having to sit there, as with that $4.95 fee you're not going to want pull your cash back out frequently. If I donate $2400 a year, that's $120 in cash back. At this point, I could either pull the money out, swallow the fee (or hope the phone rep was mistaken about this fee), and go with it, or wait a second year and pull out $240 for one fee instead of two. The "problem" is that if you pull the $120 out, get $115 and put it in the Insight savings account, it'll earn about $5.75 in interest during that period, so after 1 cycle the value of keeping it as reward points or putting it in the savings account is a wash. So actually it might be better to keep it as reward points so that the CU doesn't get miffed about you keeping no value in the account and just earning and extricating $120 in reward points once a year without ever paying any interest.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  6 лет назад

      Yes, you can minimize the fee by waiting until you get a large amount before you use the cash back. It a bit annoying to have to hold it for a year though.

    • @roberttaylor8906
      @roberttaylor8906 6 лет назад

      BeatTheBush well I'd earn the points all at once, the money would be accumulating in the savings account. There's no reason I couldn't just pull it out immediately after the first redemption, I wouldn't need to hold on to the points for a year, it's just more or less a wash.

  • @jamesthacoolcat9926
    @jamesthacoolcat9926 7 лет назад

    I redeem about once a month and usually go for cash. I have other cards but tend to use the cash rewards. I usually spend the cash reward on a monthly bill, reducing my expense. Interesting to see how much I could set aside if I put all my cash rewards in a separate account for a whole year. I might try this, see how it turns out. Although the idea might encourage more consumption than I usually spend on? So Maybe just for the bills and use another card or debit for other spending.

    You still not explained how to redeem the cash back from the cash back credit cards . I just want to know how to use???.....Let's say I have a 1.5% cash back on every purchase for a 10,000 $ credit limit card . So I will get 150 extra next month????... please explain ....In my credit card it says " spend $ 1,000 in a month and you avail the cash back". I have used already used $8000 from the $10,000 credit card . so I have to pay only $7000 before the payment due???

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  6 лет назад

      You usually only get the cash back at the next statement date. If you spend $10,000 and you get 1.5% cash back, you will get $150. This will be in your credit card and you will have to log into your account to choose for it to be credited to your account. Generally it will take a few days.
