  • In the south of France, it is impossible to imagine the markets or the summer kitchen without melons. In the 15th century, the Avignon popes brought melon seeds from Italy as a gift to Provence, where they have been cultivated in the Cavaillon region ever since.

Thanks to more than 3000 hours of sunshine a year, they find ideal conditions to ripen and develop their particularly sweet, fruity taste. David Biscarrat grows the plants outdoors on 150 hectares, where they also have to withstand extreme weather conditions. David's wife Laetitia is always finding new ways to use the melons in the kitchen. She uses them to conjure up hearty dishes such as a tartare with courgettes and avocado or serves them cooked as a melon compote with sautéed shellfish.

These are the most enjoyable cooking shows anywhere because they are not built around competition and challenges, as far too many modern cooking shows are, but centered around community, connection, culture and showcasing the cuisines, often with a surprisingly modern twist, of the region. Food is that wonderful bridge that connects so many people together.

I’ve grown Charentais melons for years. They fly off the table at the farmers market. We never have enough.
