It's fun to go 85 MPH in a 65 zone when the whole left lane is doing it.
Inconclusive being that scanners can pick up signals from the moving cars generally in one area when pulled over pick the car they suspect is speeding in the group
it's hard to slow down with that fast pink Lamborghini you drive Linus.
its a pink Lamborghini Civic
The car is probably overclocked, the brakes aren't up to speed with high latency, and without ABS he has to PWM the pedals like crazy.
Did you mean:
Radar Detectors to drive as fast as possible ?
+MrDavibu to the top with you ^
+Porsche did 911 Name checks out.
Not covered: Some radar guns can detect the tiny change in the radar signal caused by there being a tuned circuit on the receive end (your detector) -- so they can detect your detector -- helpful if detectors are illegal in your area so they can catch you for it...
Then the detectors got a level smarter and detect radar then immediately detune their antennas so that they don't show up as damping the source. Radar detector detector circumvention.
+frollard Radar Detector Inception!
That is only effective if the lazy-ass traffic cop wants to take the time to adjust his speed gun. Most cops are just sitting there hiding behind parked cars eating their donuts trying to just make it to retirement. Do you really think a typical traffic cop will take the time to wok that hard?
ECCM!
That sounds like complete and total BS. There's no way in hell a radar gun could "detect a tuned circuit" and there's double no way the radar detector could "detune" itself like that.
@@VTXHobbies It's real and people have been fined for it. I knew someone that got pulled over for it and while slowing down he took the detector and put it in a box and slid it to the back of his van and they still knew he had one and had been using it.

I didn't know these were still a thing. They were all the rage when I was a kid, but haven't seen/heard of them since.
In fact, at one point, people in my area caught with radar detectors were made to back over them in their car or something.
Yeah that happened in my municipality too...until someone took them to court because they ended up with a screw in their tire, ended up with a blowout and messed up their rim which caused an accident and killed a 5 year old. Supposedly confiscating and destroying the unit would have sufficed...Some say it was worth a kid's life.

As someone who lives in Virginia, I find it upsetting to live in the one of maybe the only states that it's illegal to own a radar detector in, since our state police have radar detector detectors.
Facts bro. i’m from 804 area and they will pull you so quick if they figure out you have a radar detector

Weta Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Quebec Police (Sûreté du Québec), and RCMP across eastern Canada use Spectre radar-detector-detectors (RDD). Spectre RDD will notify the officer if a radar detector has been detected near-by. Penalty includes a minimum fine of $350 in Manitoba, $170 in Ontario, and $650 in Quebec, and the radar detector will be confiscated.

STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON
Hey Linus, police officer here. My department actually doesn't train us in stationary radar any more, just Lidar. The two main reasons being that it's not easily picked up by detection equipment and it's significantly more precise (radar beam width is very wide, a bit over 30 ft wide at 100 ft. Lidar beam width is much narrowed, specifically 3ft at 1000ft, so around 100 times narrower). Radar is still used but more when it's integrated into the car in what's called moving radar, the radar is in a fixed spot in the vehicle and connected to the calibrated speedometer, which is then used to add/subtract the speed of the police car from the reading depending on whether the vehicle you're detecting is moving towards or away from you.
Also there are Lidar jammers out there as well, however if I'm not getting a good hit off the license plate I can always move the reticle left/right to one of the head/tail lights.
Also speed detection doesn't work from the side of the vehicle, only the front or back. The radar wouldn't detect a change in frequency, nor would the Lidar detect a change in range. The cosine effect states that the greater angle you are to one side of the vehicle you're detecting the lower the speed reading will be. While it means the speed detection will always be slightly lower than the motorist's actual speed (unless you're directly in front of the vehicle), however this always favors the motorist.
Here in Western Australia they use camouflaged laser cameras, usually rear facing. They'll send you a $100 fine in the mail (usually takes 2 or 3 weeks) for doing 5kph (3.10mph) over the speed limit, usually on highways/country roads.
And they do it all in the guise of road safety.
good news. wapol have brought out the jenoptik traffistar line of cameras a couple years back. My detector picks it up from 250 or so meters away. 24.1ghz kband radar. the laser only cams are no longer in use.
Found it funny that the lady eating the sandwich had a g29
Okay, I love that their Cop car graphic at 0:13 is an Aussie cop car!!!
XD keep it up boys
the cop car is based in Queensland look at the rego in the windscreen
I thought it was, I just didn't wanna look like an idiot xD
Cruising on the highway with windows open? and over the speed limit? no, never happened
There's a doppler BAND of frequencies? That's news to me...
yes its called radio lol
+Peter K. Yeah. My detector can find K (commonly used for sliding doors), KA, KU, X, and the frequency that some ambulances and firetrucks use in their strobes to change lights when they approach. Having that last alarm go off is always interesting, since it sets the detector to max volume and has the most annoying sound.
1:25, out of all the police in the world, you choose a Serbian police man? Lol.
Who else would they pick?
+Meh Gusta And the second one is Serbian too lol
Mr Pancakes Yeah I wrote the comment without watching the whole video.

+Darren Allen i live in qld too lmao, defs our car haha
radar detectors are only legal in WA.
@1:33 WHY GOD!!?!??!???!
So i'm glad you made this. i'v been wondering for a long time.
Can radars pick up your speed accurately if they are driving towered you?
+chris raines Well, yes. They detect the speed difference between the source and the target. Then they just hook up to the in-car speedometer to subtract any police vehicle speed from the result.
say they're doing 100km/h toward you, and they detect a gross speed difference of -250km/h (a closing speed is negative). The gun adds the +100 that the gun is moving toward the target and gets the -150km/h absolute net speed of the target. busted.
Had no idea these were a thing. Definitely getting one now.
Techquicke idea: "How does an operating system work? "
I'd like to know more about paging and swapping for instance. Always fun to learn!
love your vids keep up the good work
I have had this discussion with numerous people and found two basic groups.
Those who understand radar detectors are passively receiving listening devices. And those who believe the radar detector is actively emitting "some kind of beam" that detects the presence of radar.
Funny how the latter always say things like "yeah i don't think so" or "thats why you have to send them in all the time to be caliberated" or " well how else could it work".
My detector's (Max2 HD) ability to log and store frequencies for realtime or later filtering so very helpful.
3:53 Linus in the human trafficking business now?
+Felix Brakel He aint gettin' me!
i am quite amazed by the usage of not one, but even 2 different serbian police stock photos in this video, i rarely see us serbs casually shown in videos even once, let alone twice
I always wondered how radars work, but was to lazy to reseach. Thanks, Linus
I went to Costco today, I went to look at the computers, and on the desktop of one, was 2 tech quickie videos, an old ltt video, and an ncix tech tips video. Also on the computer next to that one was recova.

Could you guys do a fast as possible on kvm's or Keyboard Video Mouse switches? From what I've seen they look to be what I need for controlling a pc from a local tv but if you made a video explaining it I'd feel much better about the purchase.
Im using uniden lrd450 in New Zealand currently and it actually works well picks up KA band in seconds moving on to escort 9500ix soon
I'm pretty sure the "Doppler frequency" is not a frequency range as stated in the Video ( 2:09 ), but rather the frequency you'd get after applying the speed difference between frequency-source and target on the original frequency.
Omg the dude at 1:32 killed my soul
that slow down thing worked for me*. cruise control is the best thing in the world for that. also music. if i don't listen to music i tend to feel the haste bug's bite a bit more strongly because i focus harder on getting to where i want to be, and that is usually better done faster. won't lie, i recently did a strech of 300km in less than two hours. who could blame me, i literally took the road just to give my sister a freaking 400km ride, and then had all the way back to do. i took some good, wide back roads and floored it. the trip back was over an hour shorter thanks to that. funny thing i was doing 180 kph like the whole way, and a whole group of some 6 cars more or less kept with me for the most part of it. they were like they only other cars on the road, and they were all doing at least 180 too. i'd leave them behind but every time i slowed down by a bit for 5 minutes they all caught up. wtf!
Radar Jamming is very much illegal pretty much everywhere. Laser jamming is legal in most states, about 10 states where it’s illegal though.
I always thought it was the changes in light frequency, hence doppler effect or red shift. when an object is moving towards you the light shifts toward the red end of the spectrum, and that was how they calculated the speed galaxies where moving. learn something new everyday as they say.
learned the doppler effect in physics :D
gotta love driving in Va
"Doppler" is not a specific band of frequencies; it is only relevant as the term for an observer experiencing frequency change/ shift, as a frequency source passes by.
This, in simple terms, occurs because the wave "compresses/decompresses" as the source travels past the observer.
Sorry to tell you that a radar detector does not pickup ''doppler frequencies'' but the original signal from the police radar , be it X/K/Ka bands.
You are right if you say : the returned signal from a moving object contains a doppler
shift which is analysed by the police radar and transformed in a speed readout.
A K-band radar would display 50 mph when the Doppler shift is 3600 Hz.
Good work all in all : being caught is expen$ive.
seeing the discussion here and linus attitude I really no wonder why there is so many car accidents
Police officer: You were going too fast! Me: Nooo, you're using a LIE-dar!
Can you do a test of current radar detectors? See what ones are the best?
I would have preferred you spoke about WW2 submarine radar scanners, but the video does a good enough job anyways for explaining.

I live right on the border where Tennessee meets Virginia and you have to take the detectors off and on your dash frequently. But if you want to open carry a gun in Virginia at the age of 18 without a permit, then that's ok!
'murica!
It's as if there's a natural right to defend oneself with arms & not a natural right for the other...
Weird.
Most states don't require permits for open carry--Oregon included.
If you require a permit to concealed carry AND open carry, you are requiring a permit to exercise your Constitutional right, which is a violation of the 2nd Amendment.
dolebiscuit Yes I know that but that's not the case here in Tennessee :(
Brett Nanney
Surprising, I thought the South was less restrictive on gun rights.
Radar detectors are completely legal here in New Zealand, Linus! :)
1:33 Dafuq
now Linus wants me to listen to audio books when im driving
In the super market: "no you go first"
on the road: "fuck you I'm going now"
I just had a test on this!
Here in Brazil we have a very effective tool to prevent speeding, it's called "terrible roads" 😂😂😂😂
+maximuscesar very effective, my street has 50km/h limit, you can't go past 20km/h, that would make you brake the suspension of even a 4x4.
if in finland they suspect you have one of these hidden in your car, youd better hand it over them or they take your car apart a piece by piece until they finds it.
Radar detectors are legal in New Zealand however Radar Jamming devices remain illegal (in NZ).
so if the detector picks up the signal that was first sent by the officer , wouldn't that be too late to slow down assuming the officer has already determined your speed? I do not understand whether or not they are useful
do the police in richmond use lidar or radar, im also in the area
The stalker radar unit I use has pop mode and it is slick. I smile when people are confused that their $500 radar detector never even squeaked!
Hey Linus, from what I read there is no specific law making jammers illegal in BC. Can you confirm this?
No, because he's not a lawyer.
+Kim Jung They are illegal in all of Canada at the federal level, including possession of the device itself in many cases. (Radiocommunication Act, and one of the Transportation or related Acts.)
You can also face fines or jail time if a piece of equipment that isn't supposed to cause jamming is causing signal interference, even if you're unaware of it. However policy is to play nice, inform the owners of the problem, and give them time to fix things before bringing on the legal measures.
+Ryan Gunn So unless you're a lawyer, you can't have any knowledge of the law? Go be ignorant and useless elsewhere.
+RealLuckless I appreciate your comment, but I couldn't find what you were referring to. Would you mind quoting the section of the Act or a link to an article that talks about it. Thanks!
my friend's one picks up trains as well as lidar. we where sitting at a train stop and the train was going by then the system was yelling train at us

So ya, knowing the local laws is a must!
Im from quebec I feel your pain
I'm pretty sure you can use jammers in BC?
He said a few western provinces. Which is BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan
i thought the reason a siren is louder coming at you compaired to going away was due to the fact of sirens being installed infront of the car..
what’s a good jammer?
I prefer a sonar detector when travelling by submersible, although it doesn't seem to work in my car.
I feel like Top Gun when I driving with the radar.....the feeling that you're locked in..
they are using lasers or contact loops here. pretty hard to beat.
You can have them here in New Zealand :)

Linus and Luke, if You can't see it on Twitter, I hope You will here
Here in Australia the police will park a van car or 4x4 with a camera that takes photos of the license plates and if you are speeding you will get a ticket with a photo of the vehicle the driver is driving. If your car or vehicle by someone else you have to let them know who was driving the vehicle. I was on a public transit bus going through a speed camera and I saw a flash and the driver got done for speeding going downhill at 80 km/h in a 60 km/h speed zone. Speed cameras do get the vehicles coming the other way with a double lane road with an island in the middle on the road. The flash is on it's front or rear bumper and that depends which way the vehicle is parked and the vehicle can be an unmarked police vehicle.
In Portugal (and majority of EU) is forbidden and if you get caught, they can size your car and apply a huge fine.
I have a escort 360 it's awesome.
amen. passport here :)
The worst problem regarding laser detector, is that by the time you've been targeted, they have your speed. so even if you could react it would be too late. That said though, the held models are difficult to keep steady so they continue to paint you with the laser until an accurate measurement can be made.
Lol mine detects over a mile away, around curves and over hills. Long before I'm within sight much less their range
I live in virginia. Not only are we the only state to make radar detectors illegal for all vehicles but our state troopers are some of the most strict and harsh I have ever seen.
