Thanks for such a fair and balanced review, Michael - the feedback is great! We're very grateful that you get our sort of 'vision' for the app and what we wanted to do with Kino. :) It's definitely a v1 - so we have big plans for it, and things like manual WB are on the roadmap, along with, well other things :)
Re: Focus locking - this is a great bit of feedback. I'll speak as half of the team, (Sebastiaan) but as the designer I kept seeing people hold their iPhone in a sort of spider-grip, being extremely careful not to touch the screen to upset any parameter of the recording. I wanted to make an app that felt, well, secure to use - something where you didn't feel like an errant tap or misplaced finger would ruin your setup or exposure and focus. We might've been TOO strict on that, but now that the app is out we're honestly just excited to see how people use it, who uses it, and what people want.
Again, thanks for the review and we are gonna work on all your feedback :)
Purchased for my iPhone 15 Pro Max. Hoping it doesn’t go to a subscription based model so that I’ll feel better sharing with f&f. Michael’s videos how I’ll share. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out 🤳🏻
I agree, I hate accidentally touching the screen and re focusing. If you do add that feature please enable a way to disable it as well.
Is this still on sale? If so its just giving me the $20 option
Would love to try... but... your week long intro sale of 50% is now 100% ... in just 3 days?? 🤨
Please allow the app recording to allow stop/start with bluetooth remotes. Thx!
Great review! I purchased it because it’s again another tool to have on the iPhone and more choices to get the job done. I wonder if this also going to open a market to creators to make Luts for sale, I’d be curious to see what your thoughts are on that or even if you are thinking about making a few and sale them. Thanks again for your thoughts on this app.
It’s already up to $20 so I guess the intro price isn’t for a week but only a couple days
Same. Their response was "I think you caught it just as the sale ended and now it's full price" when I sent in a ticket after I watched this vid soon as he posted it. Riiiiiight. Oh well.
@@SamThingsHD It was listed on the blog as ending Friday, but we did extend it to Sunday midnight! Sorry you missed it, but we’ll definitely run a sale for our first big update :)
@@halidecamera I think the first I heard of this app was on Mac Rumors and I was under the impression the sale would last a week, then a couple days later when I went to purchase it was over. The full £20 in the UK then seemed a bit expensive for a new app with no demo option to test, so I decided to leave it and wait for more feedback from others. We also have Final Cut Camera now.
Totally bringing the goods to the night crowd! Appreciate you sir! I will definitely check this out! Thanks for all your videos and content you share-massively valuable! Take care out there! 👍
Just purchased the App & not a minute later your video popped up & of course had to watch it. Great insights & info so,good looking out & keep up the great work!👊
Just bought the app and not a minute later it starts crashing. Sigh
how do you feel about this app for vlogs?? i think i will try it vs the default camera app which i use because its simple and quick... that's what i need. i have the black magic app and its wonderful but not really good for vlogs as there's sooo much going on with that app.. simplicity but very good is what I need!!
I bought it at launch because this app seems fantastic for travel and stuff like that.
I want to use a nd outside but be fast and easy to film stuff and this app really is that, not much menus that we need to navigate and the "auto" thing to help with exposure it´s amazing.
Right now i can't import my lut's, it gives me an error but even with the included lut's it really is amazing for a V1.
Working on it!
Very interesting... thank's for the in-depth review. Based on your findings, I going to buy it.
Great review, you made a great job trying to find the right balance (not easy based on my own experience making reviews).
As you said, I think I will use this app to quickly record stuff, and keep using Blackmagic for videos I want to have all the control I can. It's kind of a replacement of the native iPhone camera app for me.
Cheers!
What do you use as remote shutter button or handle?
Great review. Very watchable too Michael.
You have left an right audio, but on 13:37 i see mono (M) Thats the Problem i have on the iPhone 14 Pro only M and not L-R audio
This answered a lot of the questions that I've had since first hearing about the app online. Thank you so much for putting together this comparison and walking through all of the pros and cons of the app for us. I don't think I'll be investing in the V1 of the app but it's definitely on my radar for when a project calls for this kind of thing.
So you can’t control WB and it costs $20?!… I’ll stick to the Blackmagic Camera App.
The real app that you needed to compare it to is the stock Apple app and why this one is much better for the average user and how it gives you more capabilities and functionality. I did just buy it to have it available for when the situation calls for me to quickly get the shot.
The one thing BMC needs to add is the ability to burn in LUTS after the fact. Actually, I'd like a little simple app that was just a color grade utility for Apple Log. Not as complicated as DaVinci Resolve, but something to easily modify the looks and apply LUTS (and perhaps de-Squeeze Anamorphic footage).
i mean...you can put everything in bmc to auto...i guess it's just not for me, you pay $10 for less features, i don't have to change any settings in bmc to start recording, i literally have preset settings where all of it is set the way i want it. You can just hit the action button, which takes me into "filming mode" and opens BMC with all my settings set, and i hit record.
You can even import and export presets. I just don't get it, but ok. I already have two apps on my home screen, the native camera app, and BMC. Maybe I am just missing something.
I have got to agree to this. BMC is free and has better control.
Welcome to Late Night Uploads with Michael Tobin
Morning uploads are overrated 😅
😂😂😂😂
Thanks for the review, which I felt was very balanced. I agree with your assessment on how Kino's been positioned wrt BMCamera app.
I've not be able to import .cube LUTs, such as TheOneLUT, from iPhone Files but that might be my misunderstanding of how the 'Settings/Grades/Import from Files' feature is meant to work.
Are the presets all reducing the Apple Log down to Rec.709 or can you use the LUT to stay in Rec.2020 or HDR?
The lut itself is what defines that conversion. I don’t know how it works in kino, but in bmc you can add whatever lut you want.
I would assume the LUTs would export as rec709
The LUTs are separated based on your color space, and almost all of the Log ones are natively made for Log footage, not transformed and stacked.
@@halidecamera I think the question is what color space do the LUT’s output to. Most LUT’s output to Rec709 acting as a look and a technical conversion. Every iPhone for the last 5 years supports HDR, so you can output HLG or PQ (Rec2100). The question is to what color space do the LUT’s convert the incoming Log footage to.
@@MaximoJoshua We actually state it at LUT import time what output space is which is Rec709 for now. We'd love to add further HDR export with other tags as well.
This convinced me to buy it, as I feel like I’m the intended user. I have an iPhone 15 Pro, but I have never shot in log before, as color grading sounds daunting to me. The fact that I can do it in the app is amazing and makes me want to try it out!
you can bake in a lut too the footage with the blackmagic app though. not sure why you said you couldnt
What I said the BM app can’t do is take a clip you’ve already shot in LOG, import it into the app and then apply a LUT and then export it as a new video. Kino is the first video app I’ve seen to be able to do that.
@@initialfocus It was a little mislead, not all LUT can be imported.
Learned a lot from this, thanks. Definitely see a place for this. Here is one for the con's list. Does not work with Bluetooth triggers for start/stop recording
How does this work with an iPhone 14 Pro? Would I be missing out if I don't have the 15?
14 doesn’t have AppleLOG so you’d miss out on those specific grades.
Does it have the same feature that Blackmagic app does where it turns you microphone to none for no reason ruining your videos?
That has been fixed in 1.4 of the Blackmagic Camera app!
@@rohitntu it happened to me on 1.4
Aa mentioned a few times already, the big market is Android. And also blackmagic is free ( thats a no brainer of course) and it doubds like they will hit th3 Android Market soon. As a film maker I like to frame my ideal shots before setting up my rig so a phone app really helps
I couldn't figure out what is this icon/button between grid and RGB levels do. I searched other videos and developer website and nobody seems to explain that.
I say it in the video….its image stabilization.
@@initialfocus Thank you, I see it now. Somehow I missed it at first. Great review and excellent app.
Lock WB on record would be good. Seeing dropped frames on long record times on the Blackmagic Cam app
What about using an anamorphic lens?
Exactly... Was searching all over for it... NADA
So disappointing.
Can it shoot log on an iPhone 14 Pro Max? If it can't, it sounds like a lot of those creative options won't be available.
No log on 14. It still has the LUTs which are optimized for a Rec709 space for devices without LOG
@@initialfocus Thank you for the clarification.
Definitely need Blackmagic to add that option to bake a LUT after you’ve shot a clip for export. No brainer
I wish someone would create a video app that doesn't use minuscule font for the hud/onscreen status information. Some of us can't read the tiny status info even with extreme squinting. With so much less info on the screen than BlackMagic, Kino has the potential to provide this - if they care?
As a dane, seeing a Stalman lut called Glostrup, but with a picture Nyhavn in the background triggers me🤣 Joke aside, great video!
Basically it’s good for doing something quick for social media. Lol
Too bad that the app can't access earlier recordings, when the external storage has been disconnected. Blackmagic has no problem doing this.
This means that if you're gonna use any of the included LUTs, you have to apply them in the recording, or right after the recording. Once the storage has been disconnected you only have the raw recording.
Possible bug: The waveform monitor doesn't rotate when shooting in vertical. Or possible social commentary that I shouldn't be shooting in vertical!
Great app. Hopefully bluetooth remote is added in future versions
We’re on it!
Can you please do a camera app comparison of kino and the Final Cut camera app please. 🙏
In the works 👍🏼
@@initialfocus legend. all over it 👌
Were is this app available?
Seriously? Read the text below the video?
@@5XM-Film seriously it's just for crappy fucking iphones
@@daviddrew7624 you asked „ where“…. not „ what for“….
I don't want "instant grades" that I can't apply in post. If I'm filming in Log, I want the flexibility to apply adjustments, then the grade.
we let you do that, too.
@@halidecamera Do you provide the grades as LUTs? Or do you restrict the grades to being applied in app?
We all need this app for android phone
If it comes to Android it will take some time. BMD's app is still months away (at least that's what they said at NAB) and they have more resources.
Hopefully, when it does it won’t constantly crash.
Where are the video samples? What do we get at the end? What do we pay $20 for?
A lot of words in 16 minutes. In the advert, the tics are talking.
Dam, so i have to have a 15 to get the rest of the color grades? Im using a 14 pro max and i only have the first 7 grades.
That’s because the 14 can’t record Apple LOG…
the only thing I keep thinking is "ok, how long until they turn this app into a subscription based app?".. lol, cuz it's pretty much the inescapable fate of all thing nowadays
I wish iphone 14 pro max had apple log :(
I appreciate their concept bringing the most crucial controls to the user and then automating the rest. Really loving their take on applying LUTs too. A worthy first effort. Now let’s see what Apple gives us in the FCP Camera app.
The issue w any of these beast type are pricey for 1 gen of phones
not sure I understand why this costs any money at all.... why do you need anything more than the BM app and the built in Apple App.... I see no value at all for the Kino App... sorry...
9:41 He told you very plainly, “This is meant for everyone to be able to get cinematic images, QUICKLY”
@@jnnx I didn't know that the other apps work SLOWER to get cinematic images...
Android Love?
What up, man!! Thanks for this update. Working late again, I see.
Always! When the kids go down it’s time to work 😂
So not actually for everyone then.
"For everyone!" (Who has an iPhone...)
Funny. Word Kino means cinema theater in polish language.
Nothing special in the app for the price tag when Blackmagic is free and Final Cut camera will be free too. So why should anyone pay $9 or $20 for it.
Noooo not another Iphone app 😕
*Why is there nothing like this for Android Phones ? Why the hell does everything come out for iPhone ONLY !!! iPhones are 4K. My Android is 8K !!! Why swim in a creek, when you can swim in an Ocean ?*
No talk about audio controls - nobody talks about audio control in these apps … don’t care about luts
I literally said “there are no advanced audio controls. You either use the iPhone mic or plug in an external and it will choose that one”. Simple as that
Beta product that you can't try out for free and instead have to pay $10 (early release) when Black Magic is free.
Stupid marketing.
Hardly a beta, we would argue, when there's a lot of value even in just the presets. But you are right - there's other apps that are free, so if it's not to your liking those are great options :)
@@halidecamera I'm sorry, but it's certainly not ready for professional or even high-level amateur use. It can't handle many LUTs, and switching to a high frame rate causes it to grind to a halt.
Same developers as Halide? They’ll switch to subscription with the same lame excuses as filmic. No, thank you
No i can use these apps without any subscription.
@@eMotionFlowing But for how long?
Yeah, that switch was disappointing.
After that switch, everyone who’d bought the app not only got the v2 for free but also 2 years of upgrades *and* gets to, of course, use and keep that app forever. I think that’s a pretty good deal :)
@@halidecamera thanks for your reply! Imagine coming home and seeing that you need to pay for your car parked on your own driveway. And a bit more if it's a truck. Of course the penalty will be introduced if there is no parked car as pavement degraded quicker under direct sun light and rain. The fridge also will charge you per can of soda cooled. And it will be a subscription for amount of openings of fridge's door. All the locks in the house are free to use with a single key only. Each additional key service must be purchased as subscription. The TV will be able to switch HDMI inputs for free only twice a day after that $3.99/month but not more than 12 switches per day.
Umbrellas will also be forced to close after consecutive use within rainy weather of 10 minutes.
Subscribe for $9.99 for 10 hours of rainy usage per month and get unlimited use during sunny days for free.
No app is better than Blackmagic Camera unless its also free!
Black magic all the way. FOR FREE!!!!
Not for everyone, only Apple..?
Much better than Back Magic App 👌🏼
you kidding right?
Discount is only for US customers. In Europe its 22.99 EUR! 👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼
One day after this video it is $19.99 in the US, so maybe it’s regularly $39.99?
Only fora shortwhile.
Seventy percent of the world use android, and the rest if from all 0tuers big company, and today's day still people who releases a exclusivity app just for apple devices, unbelieved, even Blackmagic Design is releasing soon Blackmagic Camera for Android, and this Kino instead for think ahead make the same dumb decision to released just for apple.
They don't because a lot of Android users are no going to pay for it and are going to download the Illegal APK so to get it for free.... so companies do it first to Apple because everyone who get it will pay. So Android users are in part responsible for this to happen.
