The second call was correct. You can't step in the way of a catcher throwing out the runner. Contact does not have to be made. And what most people do not know: the batter's box does not protect the batter. If you step in any direction which impedes the catcher's ability to make the throw, even if in the batter's box, it's interference. It's best to make your normal swing and not make any other subsequent movements outside of your normal follow through (and staying in the box) when a runner is stealing.
Exactly. Batters can be called for interference while remaining in the box if they do anything to impede the catcher. I had a JUCO game where a batter attempted a "warm up swing" immediately after a called strike, while the catcher was rising to make a throw to second on an advancing runner. I called the batter out and had every coach on that team telling me I was wrong. I directed them to rule 6.06, which clearly states the aforementioned.

That’s interference all day. Contact doesn’t need to happen. Any movement that falls out of the batters box that impedes the catchers natural motion and ability to make a play on a runner is to be called batter’s interference (judgement call). Good call.
To be fair that was a obstruction on the batters part. He literally got right in front of the catcher. Not sure if the batter actually meant or even knew he was out of the box but it was the right call.
You’re right, but technically the term is still interference. Obstruction is only on defense, with exception of the catcher on catchers interference with batters only. Just for future knowledge for ya
As an umpire I would have called batter interference. There's no way the ump could see if there was contact, but the batter was so far out of the box that it's an easy call to make.
I think in college the minimum penalty for a suspension is one game, and that minimum penalty increases if you get tossed more then once in a season. That's why NCAA ejections aren't too common.
I'm definitely objecting to the narrator suggesting there's anything remotely questionable about the batter interference call. that's very clear batter interference, no question about it (the fact that DC is questioning it is meaningless); if you're not calling that BI, you simply don't know what you're looking at.
I would have to agree with the Cather obstruction call.. technically the batter has the box and that’s it, he did step out of the box and into the path of the catcher so by rule that would be interference.. if his foot was on the line then yea maybe give him a break but he was clearly out of the box.. so he is out..
I've had many coaches claim they are talking to their players when in fact they are directing the comment directly at you... Some are less obvious then others but if they have been warned (especially about the strike zone) I consider their comments to be very disrespectful.
The second call is correct no contact require if in the umpire judgement the batter hinders the catcher from throwing the ball interference shall be called
Batters interference was a good call...In the middle of the throw the batter was practically standing on the plate, he's not allowed to leave the box...Now if he was in the box and the runner was trying to steal 3rd, as long as he wasn't swinging the bat in the middle of the throw, he's good...I never understand why batters crouch to help out the catcher...He doesn't have to move...Anyway, good call by the ump...
I hate it when a coach is running his mouth and when called on it pussies out and tries to claim... "Im talking to my team" Ya coach... We KNOW WHO you were talking to... Go enjoy the locker room!
Questionable call...look at a few pitches before gibson hr against eckersely....he might have interfered with catcher on davis steal in game 1 of 88 ws...
How can you say it’s not enough to call interference when the rule clearly states “Hinders the catcher’s ability to throw by STEPPING OUT of the box or making any other movement.” 100% interference because as you said, “He stepped out of the box.”
While interference was the right call, the catcher should have sold it better by hitting the batter with his throwing arm instead of trying to throw around the batter.
Dude, you do not have to repeat what the coach says when we can hear it. let the video play and then make commentary... constantly interrupting and then repeating what we just heard does not make for a good video....2nd call was correct. Catcher had to throw over batter's shoulder. Coaches are teaching batters to do this crap and is the entire point for the rule.
There's a video Tommy Lasorda being tossed out he was mic'd up.i think he was coaching Third Base at the time and he had enough of the ump so he walked up to the ump and he called him Jerry, goes god dammit Jerry your strike zone is this and this and I'm tired of it ..and my team is playing like shit..I'm on a 7 game losing streak.and I don't know what to do...so the ump goes Tommy you need to light a fire under their ass..Tommy goes Jerry that's the best call you made all day and then he started to chew out the ump..and get tossed out..while Tommy was walking back he goes, thanks jerry..you see these umps know that these managers are full of crap and their trying to light a fire for their team that's why they get tossed so early in to the argument
There doesn't have to contact for batter interference to be called but at the same time there was no contact and it was a really good throw. So did it actually interfere with the throw... I don't think it did and this would have been a good no call. Stay within the rules but let the players decide gray areas and the other team had a runner in scoring position that got canceled by a no matter how you look at it questionable interference call.
did you even watch the video, do you seriously think that's what an un-impeded catcher looks like throwing to 2B? that is blatant batter interference, not calling it would be horrible umpiring
@@davej3781 I have umpired college and pro baseball for 25 years. I know catcher's interference better than you do. Did you even watch the video there Dave? If you had you would have seen a clean throw with no contact. You could call it but you would be equally right for not calling it. I don't think you call it and I know you don't call that in professional baseball. Why you ask? Well Dave because the batter didn't interfere with the throw. Why you ask? Well Dave because there was no contact and a true throw there was no hesitation at all by the catcher. The batter BARELY leans out of the batter's box. Had the batter not leaned out of the batter's box/sort of over the plate the throw would not have changed at all.
@@elephantju-jitsu3086 look at the second view from the side, look how the catcher can't follow-through with his throw and steps backwards away. that's a catcher who's been interfered with. BI all day, every day, at every level of ball.
@@elephantju-jitsu3086 I will acknowledge that saying not calling it would be "horrible umpiring" is a bit hyperbolic. It's a judgment call, but I don't think a no-BI call here would be good judgment.
@@davej3781 He absolutely follows through on the throw as he normally would. It was a good throw and the catchers throwing motion is not interrupted and he gets the throw off with full power/speed. No way shape or form is the guys throwing motion is interfered with. The bottom line is that catcher got off a really good throw and that could not happen if there was interference. Not calling inference there is perfectly ok this it is not black and white either way this play is the very definition of a gray area where you use your judgement and either way can be right.
If that head coach isn't suspended it is a travesty. The NCAA has a rule that you have to immediately leave the facility after being ejected. You don't get any last words at all by rule so if you comment or argue at all even one word you are to be warned then suspended if you don't immediately leave without argument. Horrible job by the umpire crew and the home plate umpire.
