Having a private jet is expensive. Not so much on the purchase side, but the cost to fly and operate one is very expensive. Even with the introduction of light jets, operators are still spending north of $1000 per hour to operate these smaller jets.
The value preposition of Turboprop aircrafts makes more sense on the cost savings. A turboprop aircraft is propeller driven, but also uses a single jet engine. And in many scenarios, these aircraft can perform just as well as light jets in their climb rate and cruise speeds. Turboprops also tend to have better capabilities than small list jets. The best part is you get it all at a fraction of the operating cost. In this video we check out 5 of the best turboprops you can buy in place of a jet.
Here are the aircraft listed.

I love my B350! I can take full fuel of 3611lbs, 6 medical personnel, 2 patients, full wing lockers and cargo area, so about 700lbs of cargo and still be around only 15500lbs gross take off weight. Then climb to FL340 and fly 1000NM with good room for an alternate. The New Fusion aviaonis are pretty amazing and make IFR flying into 3000 foot strips in the middle of the winter a breeze. Love having the C version and the nice big cargo door / airstair.
Slight correction on the Evo. I own one. It’s ceiling is 28K. I’ve enjoyed mine but I’ve had it on the market for over 2 years, now. There is only 1 company currently insuring them and we’re getting BENT OVER to do so. Being an experimental and with a fleet size under 80 or so, it’s annual premium is right up there with my 2007 PC-12/47. Probably one of the main reasons I’ve been unable to sell mine.
yeah this clown making the video makes lots of mistakes
I was going to say the same thing, you can NEVER compare an experimental to a standard category aircraft - it's insane for both insurance and maintenance as you mention. I mean they are absolutely beautiful, but so is the TBM.
Probably makes more sense to register under an LLC with an umbrella liability insurance policy and forgo comprehensive coverage. Insurance prices are a joke, I got a quote for a T210 and they won’t go lower than 30k until i have 100hrs of retract time. So I decided instead to put that money toward getting my IFR rating and doing it in my instructor’s beech sierra, that was a quick way to knock out 40 hours of retract time and get an advanced rating that will also help my insurance rates.
Highly enjoyed the vid! Thanks!
What I find interesting, educational and engaging about this channel is how it manages to
bring an informed and connected audience to the table for usually informative and vigorious
discussion of aviation. Well done MojoGrip.
Awesome video! My favorite is the TBM 940. 👍
In all I only rode the King Air a few times and it really delivers.
Why am I even looking at this 😂
Ahhahaha same it came up on my recommendation
Why not? What you can conceive, and believe, you can achieve. Never lose your dreams, friend
Cause we can dream a little
Great video as always Mike 👍🏼
My hangar neighbor had an Epic E1000 and that plane was indeed EPIC!!! The climb out was outstanding!
cool story bro...
As an Air Traffic Controller love all these turbo props. Should also include the P46T and Piaggio P180. Anyway the aircraft I've been most impressed with is the PC12. That thing is fast (enough), has excellent range, impressive payload and from my observations can land and takeoff on anything!!!
Is the PC-12 certified as a single pilot airplane?
@@campmehrens1283 I believe it is...
And short runways,I hear
I can't believe the Avanti wasn't mentioned here either - speed IS pretty much what it was designed for, while (basically) sipping fuel. But yeah as a controller I'm sure you love these over the business jets and RJ's as you can easily slam-dunk a turboprop into just about anywhere without a problem. People don't realize that a slower turboprop can sometimes land QUICKER than a jet over the same leg - none of these videos ever mention that.
Keep up the good work brother!
Great video mike i need one of these
Good comparison, Thank you
I did enjoy it... Well done! This segment isn't talked of enough.
Nice job, short but sweet! Great overview
Love these vid, well done Mike.
There's only one turboprop with jet-like performance, and that is the Piaggio 180 Avanti. The cruise speed is 390 kt. How did you forget that?
Cheyenne 400ls is close as well
Magnar Nordal IKR.
Very true the ferrari of the sky's such a beautiful aircraft as well in my opiñion best looking aircraft and dam can that thing go. U can here one coming from a distance and that sound dew to those push props is just amazing
some models P.180 would do 405 kts, and the 400LS routinely cruises at 325kts but could be pushed to 350kts with M-T 5 blades, but they also forgot about MU-2's that can push 315 kts with the M-Ts and 331-10's. Cessna 441 Conquest with 331-10 can also push 320 kts.
Tu95 bear
Thanks for your list of a variety of airplane ✈ that are available for purchase 😀
Pilatus is the ultimate workhorse in the sky. Amazing capabilities ALL around. The waiting list to get a new one is amazing as well. I still shake my head when I see how little runway they use on takeoff AND landing. Used by MANY governments and medical transport around the world too.
The perfect aircraft for the budding government employed drug smuggler!!
@@standardaussie well yeah! Until they net enough cash to buy a “surplus” C130 of course 😎
THANK for YOUR response
Great video.
Thanks
The King Air aircraft are very nice. Thank you for posting these beautiful aircraft.
I love how it can be operated by a single pilot.
Thank you. Continued success to you. Happy Holidays to you and your family.
Great video with great content. 👍
Mike, you did a pro job on this video, maybe your best one yet!
You should do an episode on the Thunder Mustang! It also fits in this category though it's not a turboprop, V12 naturally aspirated, 295 kts @ flight level 240, 1000 nautical miles all smiles! Love your videos, keep up the passion!👍🏿
That tbm940 was sweet
I recently discovered your channel & am really enjoying your content. Nice work! If I may be critical of this one video in particular, I just want to point out that, as a former airline pilot (B737 & A330), I cringe whenever I hear anyone refer to these new generation single-engine turboprops as being capable of jet speeds. My experience of "jet speed" is the ability to climb at 250 KIAS below 10,000ft, 300 KIAS above, & routinely achieve a cruise TAS of 450-470 kts (that's normal cruise, let alone max) at FL400, for example. Whilst 300 kts is plenty fast without a doubt, none of these aircraft come even close to that kind of performance - & it's all just marketing BS the sales reps like to use to sway potential buyers from a real jet. I can almost see the argument for lower operating costs as being the carrot, but on the other hand there are plenty of low-time, used light jets on the market for considerably less than, let's say, a brand new, fully optioned TBM-940 at around $5 million. If I won the lottery, I'd get myself a used Premier 1A for $2 million or less, take the $3 million I saved from what I would have spent on the TBM, & use it to offset the higher operating costs of the jet. At a typical hourly operating cost of around $1,800 p/hr, that'd buy me more than 1,600 hours of flying. If I averaged 250 hours a year, that's more than 6 years' worth of operation paid for. So when considering that the jet costs more to fly by the hour but gets you there a lot sooner, I'm not even sure that operating costs make for a solid argument. Personally, I think the lure of the single-engine turboprop is because the low-time pilot with no jet experience can step up to one a lot easier, as the training & insurance requirements are less stringent. Just my 50 cents, for what it's worth... 😎
Appreciate the feedback Bradley
Wow so well articulated.
Like your videos, thanks for sharing.
thx mojo good coverage
Total inspiration
1 of the Best videos I've seen!
Another great, fun video. Mike, Thanks for sharing. 😁
If I could only afford that, either the 940 or the pilatus for me. Amazing machines.
Good video. Thank you.
Great video Mike
ahh, you are making me jealous, i was happy with cessna caravan, now i want a tbm!
Great planes. Holy cow the prices!
Thanks for your video mike
Thanks for the video MojoGrip!!! Is it possible to choose one of the options of airports the system offered ? I'm talking about auto landing
The King Air is my Favorite plane!
Nice video. Good information.
Thank you very much
I have built King Airs in Wichita. Beautiful airplane!
"you can fill this thing up and go places"
Profound commentary right there.
lol
I've only flown light sport and trikes, but I love all niches of aviation, since I traveled by airline during most of my career, on a passenger jet or puddle jumper every ten days or so for a decade straight, tapering down as I got older.
Your video and review of these aircraft is so well done, you present these aircraft at a good pace, and share the important things and tradeoffs to note about each one, which is true in smaller aircraft as well.
I chose to rent aircraft, since '06 under Light Sport, I wanted to fly recreationally, and flying trikes I always rented not only the aircraft, but a CFI's time, so I could enjoy some moments with the CFI at the controls learning in a rare niche a mode of flight that has no practical purpose other than for recreation.
I'm getting an Icon A5 as a graduation present, for hopping around Miami. Cuba, Bahamas, Caymans, etc. Literally the coolest toy in the world, imo. I'll take an A5 over a multi-million dollar jet every time.
Lain mag epic! I like this
Hope the evolution gives cirrus some serious competition.
I've been watching your channel for a while. Thank you for your Great work.
Thank you Russell
FWIW: If I had the $$$ and wanted a single-engine turboprop, I would go for the PC-12. The STOL capability is a feature I would WANT....
RocKITEman _ 2001 what is STOL
@@joeboi1342 Short Takeoff and Landing.
Lol I know it’s all relative, but I wouldn’t consider the PC12 a STOL. I’ll take the E1000.
They are a great aircraft. That said they can be difficult to get parts in North America at times. Looking forward to the new Cessna bird for that reason.
Yes I did enjoy great choices 🙏💯😇
Good job, Mike.
I really enjoyed the video
I've been a fan of the king air since the "king air pilot dies, passenger lands plane" video. Im still new to aviation, but i strongly suggest watching it.
Basler BT-67 - The vintage lines of yesteryear, the modern turboprops of today, the avionics of tomorrow. A retrofitted and revived DC-3 is almost a low altitude private jet. DC-3 then, DC-3 now, DC-3 forever.
please do not forgot the consumption of radial engines, minimum 52-gallons- each /hour
(x = 4.41-L) each engine.......
Well presented Mike! Nice job.
I agree about the Piaggio
Its 1:15 am and i cant decide which one to buy. Won't be able to sleep now.
@7:29 The King Air 200 has an engine on one side that is different than the engine on the other side. Wow! That's a cool feature.
Great content as always!
love the PC 12
100%
That is my dream airplane.
You did your homework.....good review👍👍👍
Great video
NICE....GREETINGS FROM INDONESIA
Looking very nice.
MU-2 Solitaire: A good used example cost $650,000. 315 kts, 28,000 ceiling, 7 passengers, built like tanks tons of range. Best bang for the buck. Most privately owner owned and flown by x-commercial pilots. LOVED mine
I learn something new. 👍🏿
A correction for the TBM 940: the long range cruise speed is 252 knots true air speed (290 mph) but it has a top cruise speed of 330 knots true air speed (380 mph) at 28,000 feet. This does drop the range by just under 300 nautical miles but it can save 3 hours off of the flight time
nice video mojo girp brother much love to your cool rocking channel a+
Nice review
Still haven’t decided which one I’m going to get.
Get all of them
nice presentation
If I ever get a rock band on tour, I know where to shop for a bird.
You left the best one out, Piaggio Avanti evo, faster than all you listed and cheaper to run than the cessna king air
Beechcraft king air!
@@mrabrasive51 used to be, now textron owns them, so hence cessna king air
When you go to the Textron Aviation website txtav.com/ you click on Beechcraft . beechcraft.txtav.com/en It will show King Air, Baron, and Bonanza. Click on Cessna cessna.txtav.com/en and it will show the Cessna product line.
@@eminye1 Cessna is a sub-brand of Textron and so is beechcraft
Can’t even afford the tires of those planes, but ONE DAY NOT TODAY ................💭
Cocaine money
Better to buy propeller one not the turbo prop
MJ P turbo props have propellers also
When pigs fly.
@@lttldblj not a good idea
What about the Piper Meridian / Propjet?? Good video, thank you.
Thanks
Piaggio P180 Avanti Evo would be my choice. Looks much more comfortable with the largest cabin. Consider doing a video on that.
The only jet like turboprop is Piaggio Avanti P180
What is defined as "jet-like?"
th King air 200 is my most favourite because its bigger and cheaper and it holds more space!
Once again Mike, Thanks ! My favorite has ALWAYS been the PC-12. Hope to own one within the next couple of years. Got my Multi-Engine in a 1975 Model H, Piper Aztec and been looking for a good reason to add a Turboprop to my qualifications, I currently have over 1500 Incident FREE hours in the Aztec alone, which is now due for a Major Overhaul. Want to keep it and do some upgrade.
Is the exhaust design ot these airplanes is sticking out like this for a cooling purpose..??
I believe the heading should be "5 Propeller Powered Planes that fly at Jet Speed", cuz Jet planes are powered by Turbines. Great Video btw!!
Umm arent most if not all the planes here turboprops?
Because turbo props are pretty much jet engines
@@frealsolidusauxil5873 You're right. What I implied is that the Propeller fan is the main driving component in turboprop when compared to Jet planes where it relies completely on Turbine fan to produce thrust. So it should have been "propeller powered planes that performs similar to jet planes :)
@@Nightblood995 Should simply be "5 Turboprop Planes..." then, since saying "prop-powered" might cause confusion with piston/radial props too.
My family owns a Pilatus PC 12 and while not very fast is extremely enjoyable to fly in.
Whenever Cessna gets their act together, the Denali with the GE fadac controlled engine is going to be a game changer.
The Piper Meridian M600.
The knock on the Pilatus PC-12 is the avionics. The newest model, the PC-12NGX finally added Garmin G3000 over the Honeywell units. If you've ever flown a Garmin G1000, transiting to the G3000 isn't a problem.
nope, the pc12 ngx still uses the honeywell system it is the new epic system similar to the one in their jet pc24
WoW, I really like that PC-12, but I'd probably go with the King Air (if I won the Lotto) for the overall everything. It sorta reminds me of a smaller DC-3.
Hey man you left out the 180 avanti! what a fantastic airplane!
_"Now,_ why _would you want a turboprop in place of a jet?"_
Because it's a freaking turboprop!
*I ♥ TURBOPROPS!!!!*
Also: *I ♥ BLEEDAIR BLIMPS!!!!*
😊😊😊😊
And a Turboprop can do most things, except go faster than Mach 1, better than a jet.
@@EnterpriseCapt are jets more silent than turboprops inside the aircract? I'm asking because I've never been in a turboprop aircraft
Plus, for most owner/pilots, operating costs are much more manageable.
Because you don't need a type rating for a turbo prop under 12,500
It's much more dramatic than a jet at startup and shutdown.
The first 3 are identical, the evolution is small cute and unique
We have an old King Air at my job. We call it EL Chappo.
Nice, very nice. What exactly is transported in the plane, and how many kilos of it? Or, am I risking my life just asking this? By the way, I am on a VPN. Do not bother to get my IP address.
Indrid Cold Its used as a flying testbed. Before an electronic device is put on an aircraft it is installed in the KA flown and tested. I work for a aerospace company.

@@AlexanderJScheu I use to live in Kitizgen Germany. I loved Germany and I wish I could return for a visit.
Manning cuenco!
Cool!
The PC12 is the #1 bought single turbo prop for Mexican drug Cartel on the market as of yet today. The reason is due to short take off and able to land on grass, dirt and can land on the short runways. Also known for its quick take offs even without a tarmac.
So it can land on any runway, any surface like grass, and has a large door in the back for cargo?
Drug lords' No.1 choice of aircraft
I flashed back to the Breaking Bad scene where they land on a remote strip to meet the Cartel guys.
