      I always go right. Much easier and quicker. It feels so much more natural than the other way. If I go left then I'll be walking backwards while trimming. I don't like to do that. Any clippings in the garden beds is easy to clean with a blower.

    I walk backward most of the time with my trimmer because I find it is easier on the trimming line, especially along a chain-link fence. This throws the grass toward my feet and legs, but I'm not trying to stay clean and I'm not worried about pieces of mulch or small gravel or something hitting my legs (I never wear shorts). It tends to push the head away from the obstructions you're trimming around instead of pulling the head toward the obstructions (like a chain-link fence). Of course, I'm doing the yard on my own and don't have to worry about being run over by the guy with the mower. I trim first, rather than after mowing, because any clippings from the trimming will be mulched up and blown away from flower beds and such that I trimmed around earlier.

    No ego, same team, that's the way it should be.
    I love my job but it's definitely tough to be talked down to my "crew leader"
    I hope some day my business will do well enough to cut back on my main job hours, I'd like to have the attitude you do, keeping things fair for everyone, no "hey i'm better than you" vibes
    Also, I trim both ways, but if I trim to the right I'll usually walk backwards. so I'm shooting grass away from beds/buildings 95% of the time

  • @QuietLawn
    @QuietLawn 5 лет назад +15

    Hey Brian,
    great topic as always and I've gone back and forth on this for years with my guys. We go counter clockwise to the right just like you do for a couple of reasons.
    1. It's more efficient as the trimmer follows the same pattern as the mower and they only trim what is left behind. With going the opposite way, there's the chance they will trim too much or not enough as the mower has not completed the perimeter pass yet.
    2. Having the unique experience of previously owning a lawn care business in an area with cool season grass and now living in an area with warm season grass, I can tell you there is a big difference. Warm season grass is tougher and grows sideways right up against the foundation of the house, edging, etc. It sticks right up against objects and it's very tough to trim. I've noticed that going counter clockwise cuts much better with the direction the trimmer head is turning.
    To solve the problem of throwing grass in the beds while trimming those areas, instead of holding the trimmer out in front of us like when trimming around objects, we either hold it out to the side at 90 degrees or drag it behind us at 45 degrees. This allows the head to throw debris out away from the beds.
    Also, one of the benefits of going with electric equipment like we have is that there are possibilities with the technology you don't have with gas. You asked why manufacturers don't make the heads spin the other way. Well, there are already companies such as Husqvarna that make battery powered trimmers that you simply flip a switch to reverse the direction of the head. So, you can trim normally and flip that switch around beds and sidewalks.
    Just my thoughts. Thanks for the great videos.

    The recommended way, and probably the best way to trim is to go in the same direction as the head spins. Counter clockwise, right to left, clockwise, left to right. Going against the spinning head you might find yourself swinging the trimmer back and forth to get a good cut. Going the correct way, you can keep moving and finish quicker.

    Brian, I have curved shaft stihl and straight shafts... I teach my guys to trim the direction based on the direction the trimmer spins. I actually like to follow my weedeater with the mower. They throw the clippings away from beds and into yard then they’re ran over by mower and mulched up instead of pulled from the house and left setting on top of the fresh cut yard.

    My trimmer guy goes counterclockwise. I tell him to start on the left line of the property, up the curb line, around the house, around the backyard and then come towards the front. We typically have one crossover point. I tell him to trim the back first, while I mow the front first. With a counterclockwise rotation of the head, this also makes for the cleanest cut, not just around beds, but also on hard surfaces because it pulls the grass away from the edge and then cuts it, rather than pushing it into the hard surface and then trying to cut it. This also has the benefit of him being in the front yard as we finish so that he can blow off what I have already mowed.

    Good points that you made in this video Brian. I like how you've created a nice little community of lawn mowing enthusiast's.
    When I trim around a house it always pays to walk backwards because the trimmer head goes anticlockwise and it spits the grass out behind you. if you were to walk clockwise around a house and you had the trimmer on a slight angle it will pull in towards the house and you could damage power cables around the base or chew up the lawn. With a ride on it makes sense to go whatever way it shoots the grass out. I really like these videos how you get in depth about tools and equipment. Another point that you made about making each other accountable for their jobs and taking out the ego is a smart move.

When you have a choice, trimming is almost always walking forward which means clockwise and edging is always backwards. We feel the lines are cleaner this way. If the lawn is on the high side well then we trim backwards or counter clockwise. Just like you said Brian it throws the grass back on to the lawn. It also keeps the grass off of those PVC fences... All in all it’s just about which way is faster while doing the best job possible.

      @meekrab124 3 года назад

      I'm of the opposite mindset. The less weed whacking the better. Weed whacking takes longer, and generally will rip the grass instead of doing a clean cut. Plus it's more stress on the worker.
      With this mindset it means going in with the mower first, and getting as much as you can. Whatever the mower can't get, the weed whacker does. I personally find it leads to less miss spots.
      That being said,, what works for you is exactly what you should doing.

    When I mowed I always went counter clockwise. I did this because I am left handed and it was more natural. I did like the way for several reasons. 1. It shot grass out into the yard instead of into the beds. 2. I could see in front of me and who or what was coming, that way I did not run into someone of something. 3. I feel like the head cuts whatever is right up against the fence or whatever you are trimming next to better and I have less misses. 4. I can move way faster if I can see in front of me better.
    I always trained my guys to start out trimming left handed and get used to it that way from the start. Usually they caught on pretty well even and did a great job. Great question!

    I always “walk forward” trimming around things but I’m known to back up a lot too especially when peeling back next to concrete. One technique I’ve developed when trimming next to foundations or solid objects in heavy grass is to use a forward and backward type motion and on forward swipe of trimmer I keep it away from object about half an inch or so and on backward swipe I “clean it up” , and trim against the object. That keeps the clippings thrown back at you instead of in front where they ball up. And has a very clean look.

Personally, normally go right around houses.. but I do catch myself going left around Fence post and up against concrete/stonewalls cause I feel it cuts better and quick. feels odd walking at times cause habit is walking forward and which would make you go “right” around the house or objects your trimming. But as always love love the videos and learning a lot from what you say in them and especially the plowing. Picking up little tricks and tips just overall love your videos and don’t comment on all of them but do watch 95% of them try for 100% but don’t always have the time. When I trim I always try to shoot the grass back out into the lawn that way you can just do a "finishing" lap with the mower and it will take care of the longer stuff I've trimmed. This avoids having the trimmings go into the beds and walkways and most important your not shooting that bigger wet stuff onto the bottom of the house where its gonna dry and look awful plus be very difficult to either blow or sweep it off. I dont see why anyone would do it any other way. If anyone disagrees please explain.😀

    Penny's sleeping, I'm Vic... her husband.
    I have a small lawn care business in northern Minnesota.
    I don't have any employees anymore, and this is where I see a basic difference in our work process.
    I trim to the left.
    The trimmer head spins counter clockwise, thus it throws grass counter clockwise and left and away from the building or whatever.
    I always trim BEFORE I mow too.
    This way, all the trimmer cuttings are thrown back out into my mowing path to be munched up when I mow.
    I rarely ever have the need for a blower too because I control where those cuttings go.
    When you trim to the right, the cuttings pile up against the buildings or trees or whatever and the mower can't mulch them.
    You have to get out a rake.
    I've seen guys mow first then trim, and what they leave behind is a nicely cut lawn ( maybe) splattered with trimmer cuttings around the house, out buildings, trees, bushes... wherever they trimmed.
    When you have a team though, I can see a bit of difficulty. You mow RIGHT, but I TRIM LEFT.
    Maybe rearrange how you each attack a yard. You have a sequence to how you start and finish each job right ?
    Maybe rearrange that sequence to better accommodate the team factor ?

    For weekly trimming, walking forward and counter-clockwise. For a heavier trim (initial or single service) clockwise; it clears the clippings better. Obviously with a straight shaft trimmer. Curved shaft is spinning the opposite direction because it's a direct driveline from the engine. Straight shaft has a gearbox that switches the direction the head spins.

Boundary to the left keeping the grass inside the walk/drive then cut the inside boundary going around the house counterclockwise shooting the grass into the middle keeping it out of beds. We go clockwise when possible trimming and mower starts in an area that the person is not trimming to try and stay away from each other. We also are always looking out for each other that we don't miss anything mowing or trimming because we all miss occasionally. Mostly the misses come from something changing when mowing. I have been doing landscaping for a while now, recently on a two man crew and I am on foot. I edge, weed eat, and blow counter clockwise for every machine. The Stihl weed eater rotates counter clockwise. The debris seems to fly away from me with the occasional pebble that hits my face. I assume if the weed eater was rotating clockwise, I would experience more debris coming my way instead of out. I've gotten to a point that I can somewhat control where the debris flings. Grass on mulch is not nearly as important as trying to maintain rocks or mulch from flinging past you and in the direction behind you. Going around the house counter clockwise allows the edger to be on the correct side when walking around the house. If you are right hand dominant it makes sense, it feels comfortable. I guess it all boils down to the dominant hand of the user and also adapting to the specific house. The backyard access might be on the left side, it might be a corner house, one side might have less grass.

  • @999benhonda
    @999benhonda Год назад +1

    A trimmer cuts better going in one direction or another, based on the trimmers rotation direction. Most spin counter clockwise but some spin clockwise. I technically do it wrong, because I cut in the direction that makes the trimmer throw everything at me...but that is the position that makes it easiest to control the trimmer...the better you control the trimmer, the faster and more efficient you can be. I'm a solo operator, and I've seen a 2 man crew with a bigger zero turn take nearly the same time (40m) to cut the same size lawn. That means I trimmed in 20 and cut in 20, when their guy took almost 40 to trim.

    I pretty much always go counter-clockwise, going from right to left. Then if it's a lawn I edge with the strimmer I flip it upside down and go back clockwise from left to right. I've found my trimmer (SRM225) cuts best at about 10-11 o'clock on the string's circumference which shoots the grass clippings back into the lawn so I can mulch up later with the mower. Taking into consideration though I'm a solo guy so I don't have to worry about running into the mower when trimming.

    The Ego Trimmer spins clockwise, when holding trimmer head to be horizontal to ground, so when you go counterclockwise around the house grass clippings get flung toward grass. The professional trimmers probably spin counterclockwise knowing the most dangerous task is vertical edging, having the trimmer flipped over on its edge, so when one trims the garden edges the debris flings away from the operator due to most commercial users do not use a guard. This is for most right handed users that hold the machine on the right side so right handed machine flings debris on the right side when vertically aligned. Just a guess here.
    I vertically trim with my EGO trimmer clockwise and then horizontally trim going counterclockwise.
    My proceeding steps are then I blow grass onto the lawn with my EGO blower, then I mow with Toro Super Recycler, then I blow final clippings onto grass again.

    How I mow a lawn: I have the mower operator make two passes around the periphery. This way if needed to slow down and make a K-turn it will leave less damage to the turf, and we're less likely to leave a holiday. Lastly, it does make it a smidge safer for the trim person. The trimmer person starts around the house, trimming clockwise around the house and then moves to the periphery. I also tell my trimmers what my husband told me when I learned to trim and that is, pick the same path every time; or trim it in the same order every time. I always tell my people to never waste a step. In other words, don't walk 3/4 of the way across the lawn to trim that one tree. Wait until it's the closest to the periphery pass, then jump out, go around it clockwise and then jump back on your periphery pass. One last thing I do is switch who does what on what lawn. If you mow one, you trim the next. This reduces the risk of injury by switching up body ergonomics.

    We walk left (backwards). Pulls the grass out into the yard better than walking forward. Less clippings in mulch beds, less clippings against the foundation. The head spins counter clock wise so it wants to shoot the grass either left (if you’re walking left-so back out into the yard) or straight out if you’re walking right (More so into the house/flower beds/landscaping). Plus it doesn’t want to dig in when you walk left. It naturally pulls that way so it almost hovers on top better than when we walk forward. Just my preference and I always teach my guys that way. We want there to be no sign we were ever there other than the yard to look perfect. No clippings anywhere. Been in the game since 2009. Lawn-N-Order. We’ll do your yard justice. Good channel, sir. Keep it up.
