German Gepard Protecting Ukrainian Skies from Russian Drone Attacks

  • Many predict that this winter in Ukraine will be even more difficult than the previous one. While the Russian army is building up resources to attack infrastructure, air defense units are preparing for active work. We joined the crew of the Gepard, a German self-propelled anti-aircraft gun, to find out how such an old machine is useful here in Ukraine.

    It's funny that we Germans already decommissioned the tank in 2012 because there was no real threat that would have made it necessary to continue using it. Ten years later and the threat from drones is so great that many people wish we had never decommissioned the vehicle. Greetings from Germany and good hunting

      @@xeon39688 The Skyranger is both cheaper and better. The Gepard uses old radars, canons and ammo. The Skyranger can shoot programmable AHEAD ammo and has better, more modern radars and targeting computers. It needs less rounds to down a target. The maintenance of the system is much cheaper and it can be mounted on any platform.

    • @jansix4287
      @jansix4287 10 месяцев назад

      We decommissioned it not because there were no threats, but because modern fighter jets fly too fast and too high to be hit by cannon fire. And with an active radar mounted on top Gepard is constantly revealing its position, painting a big red target on the tank. 🎯
      Gepard is only useful in Ukraine, because the Russian Air Force is complete trash. They should’ve been able to win the air war over Ukraine, but they didn’t. 🤷

      The days of wasting lots of rounds just to track targets are largely in the past. Modern targeting systems will track several drones and enables it to target them with accurate bursts. Photos or short videos can give the impression they're always burning through rounds at an extreme pace but often it only needs to fire at one drone for a few seconds. For missiles, all that counts is how much it can fire in 15-20 seconds, then it will either be succesful or be too late.

The Gepard is effective and it's just super cool! Ukraine, Romania and Brazil are the only current operators as Ukraine's allies buy back and refurbish them for Ukraine. Plus Romania is right next door and I'm sure they could cooperate on maintenance etc. All around it's awesome!

    • @fiendishrabbit8259
      @fiendishrabbit8259 10 месяцев назад +3

      The main drawback is that the Leopard 1 is a much too complicated and heavy chassis for the work it's doing today in ukraine. Modern autocannon airdefences (like PASARS-16, Skyranger 30/35, LVKV9040 or the Russian Pantsir) tend to use lighter chassis. We'll probably see more SPAAGs similar to PASARS-16 (although capable of using smart ammunition like the 3P/AHEAD). We might see higher calibers (for bigger rounds with more tungsten pellets and longer range), but probably not anything the size of the 76mm Otomelara as those require bigger vehicles to be mounted on.
      The integrated radar in the Gepard is a nice feature (which makes it self-sufficient), but the radar has so much longer range than the gun that we're probably going to see a move towards batteries using a single radar and multiple gun-carriages (with the guncarriages using lighter and cheaper optical targeting systems).

      Most NATO nations have only limited numbers of tactical, Mobile, AA systems like guepard. This is because until recently, NATO doctrine has always operated with the assurance of air dominance.
      This means that these types of close in air defence platforms have only a niech capability. Either being deemed obsolete or not worthy of mass production.
      That being said, Britain has supplied systems like the Stormer as well as a modified jackle that uses ASRAAM missiles in a surface to air capability.
      A major factor in the moving away from such platforms was the rise of the attack helicopter like the AH64 or Ka 52. These could move with a unit and provide the same protection with better vision, range, and versatility.
      Though once again, events in Ukraine have forced many to rethink how assets are deployed.

      several of similar capable systems exist and many of those are more modern then the Gepard (some are mobile versions of extremely capable CIWS like Phalanx, Mantis, etc.
      Problem is we only have them in tiny numbers, as air superiority is pretty certain for NATO ... the Gepard was the only capable system which was produced in large numbers and stuck around in storages.
      At least we finally start planning to build and buy the successors of Gepard, like the Skyranger 35 on the Boxer platform, but I bet none of those would come to Ukraine any time soon.

    One of the reason why Gepard is so good at shooting down drones is because it has 2 sets of radar one is for searching for target and the other is for tracking and calculating firing solution, because of that Gepard can track and shooting at a target while keeping an eye on the other, as far as I know Gepard is the only gun mounted AA that have this capability as most only can track or search or both but only can do one at a time or needing a seperate system to do it

    Germany needs to update and put a newer Gepard into production.
    The USA needs to revise and update the design of the Sgt York system and get it into production.
