    The truth is that cinema is competing with home movie watching, more now than ever with streaming and massive TVs. So studios are taking fewer bets with niche genres. Honestly, if "westerns" were the popular genre today, the question would be the same: "Did Westerns ruin the blockbuster?"

  • @NinthShinigami
    @NinthShinigami 4 месяца назад +42

    I would say this: I don’t think the MCU ruined blockbusters as a whole, but it had too much influence. I would similarly say, just as an example, Pixar and Ghibli, even Disney to an extent coming in and being able to make films for the whole family. It kinda changed the animation game, showing it wasn’t just for kids, you could tell all sorts of stories with animation, ones the kids and the adults in the room could relate to. We still get silly for kids animated movies like Trolls and Wish recently, but those movies are what makes the Pixar and Ghibli films stand out.
    In the same vein, MCU came in and was this dominant force. The stories were all connected, it all felt three dimensional with all these characters and their journeys, the lore and world building, stepping it up with every entry in the stakes and action. It feels like blockbusters nowadays are too saturated, and follow the same tropes, but only putting in half the work. Not to mention all the green screen and CGI MCU uses. Even mismatched tones that the MCU has been guilty of persist in quite a few blockbusters. Franchising as you say it as well. But, it’s what’s allowed films like Mission Impossible, John Wick, Extraction 2, and Rurouni Kenshin to stand out, just a few off the top of my head.
    Not sure if I made my point clear or not but that would be my answer 👍

    I don't think that people are tired of blockbusters. They're tired of bad blockbusters. Marvel seems to have lost their way after Endgame and thought that no one would notice the bad writing and unlikeable characters that they were presenting. The fact that we go back to those earlier films proves that the blockbusters are still viable if done with care and respect for the audience.

  • @benwasserman8223
    @benwasserman8223 4 месяца назад +11

    The answer is absolutely not. The problem isn’t the MCU. The problem is Hollywood saw Marvel’s success and tried to replicate it on all fronts with absolutely no pre-planning beforehand. Thus resulting in one too many DCEUs and Dark Universes. All while focusing less on mid to low budget genre films that balanced out the blockbusters, or moving them to the streaming void.
    Honestly the MCU feels like a scapegoat designed to wash studios’ hands of their guilt. As well as moviegoers who were happy to just have superhero films be taken seriously at long last.

  • @strawhatsanji4985

    I'd say the reason why movies are really bad is the ESG age we are in.
    Movies went from having a different movie for each demographic (Romance movies, Action movies, Kids movies etc).
    Then Marvel made movies with all of them together which were a success.
    Now with the ESG time we are in, Movies went from being a compact movie that serve 3-5 demographics to now 5-10 demographics.
    Movies now are compact with Action, Comedy, Kids, Romance, LGBTQ, Black Lives Matter, Latina, Political views, Women empowerment, Mix families etc. Where does the list even stop.Trying to pander to all demographics in one movie makes it seem like a cluster fu*k.
    The movies have no clear direction which makes them just poorly written and executed.

    It's just another example of Hollywood trying to recreate a certain type of success it had in a certain area. 6 plus years ago everyone was trying to copy the success of Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy by going dark and gritty and the reboot route, Divergent and Hunger Games were a case of Hollywood trying to find the next Harry Potter and the Matrix was referenced and copied in various films for many years.
    Everybody keeps applauding Scorsese for his comments on Marvel and his advocation for it to go away and never come back but I'd say Chris Nolan's remarks on what Hollywood should do going forward are what people should be listening to: “A healthy ecosystem in Hollywood is about a balance between the two things and always has been.”

    I don’t think MCU is the cause of blockbuster movie fails. I think there are key factors in Hollywood that can ruin a blockbuster hit at the box office:
    • Poor marketing
    • Negative reviews from movie fans and critics
    • Competition
    • Franchise fatigues
    • Release timing
    • High production costs

    It is interesting to note that for a lot of action/blockbuster genres, we are in the revisionist part of the genre cycle, (past the primitive, and classical cycles) and whenever you are in this cycle you need to find a way to turn this in the genre on its head and/or give it a new spin or else people won't be interested in it.

    It's not the MCU's fault that Hollywood tried to copy their success. I wasn't around but there was a time that westerns dominated Hollywood. In the late 70s into the 80s slasher films were flooding theaters. There were a time when the raunchy comedies were all over the place. Whenever there is success there are copycats. Marvel just did it on a level never seen before.

    Barbie just had great marketing. The movie itself was just lackluster. I know it’s supposed to be girl power, but as a woman, I didn’t find it inspiring.

    Shout out to Jim Gaffigan, but the MCU is McDonald's, tasty empty calories that all age groups can enjoy. Is it amazing, no, most of the times it's barely good, but still, you know what you're getting. And sometimes, you grow sick of McDonald's just like it's sort of happening rn with the MCU.

      Women just don't care either way if the plot of the movie is woke, they don't even care that it has a plot.
      The Barbie character actually made it through the woke butcher writer's room mostly intact.
      Barbie is not fat, she has big tits, and she wears lots of makeup, so the Barbie character design is actually not woke.
      Barbie is the complete opposite of all the other female characters they keep pushing into modern action movies, e.g. Echo.
