    I've noticed birds use this technique quite a bit. They flap their wings for a while, then lock into a streamlined glide.

    Thanks -great video with good common Prius sense. Since I bought my car last year (had 165,000mi and a failed HV battery), I got about 44 immediately after fixing the HV battery and using it completely without hypermiling attempts. After I changed the oil and increased the tire pressure to 42front/38 rear I got to about 48mpg. After I figured out the ideal glide stuff (pressing pedal just a touch to get 'no arrows' or just lightly to get some battery power without engine kicking in, I was able to get my mpg up to about 50.x, with one section/one day oddly being up at 63 mpg over 150 miles highway and country roads. This explains, I guess how I got to that outlier high number. I must have been doing the extremely low engine-on 'pulse', where the orange arrow from the engine goes to wheels with no orange arrow from the electric motor to the wheels (meaning the motor is taking some engine power and sending it to the battery, also a green arrow.) It's a good tip that the driver suggests the instantaneous mpg number has been found to be 'about the speed your going' to maximize overall mpg. Thanks for that too! I'll be trying, when road conditions/drivers allow, to work on my pulse acceleration technique.

    This works to a lesser degree in a standard gas engine car also. From a stop. Accelerate smoothly but briskly up to the speed you want, then coast or maintain. Regular gas engine.. operate most efficiently at 50-75% throttle. When the engine RPM is above idle and you are off the throttle coasting, the fuel injection shuts off the fuel.. So when going down a hill, let the engine braking force keep you at the speed you want.. you are using no of little fuel. Watch the instant MPG gauge it will go to 99MPG.
    On another point.. this pulse and glide is great when your alone on the street, doing it with people behind you is very incosiderate, also .. Most places I drive none goes 35MPH anyway... it;s always 40MPH or higher.
    Nice video though on demonstrating how to do this.. It is a good idea, IF you can safely do it.

      Pulsing and gliding works at higher speeds too on some hybrids. I pulse and glide at around 60 mph, as I do value saving time as well. I generally hover between 55-70 using a semi to reduce drag when possible.

    Everyone gets stuck on “transmission” but its really a synchronized motor and engine in perfect harmony. Its quite amazing if you check into it

      dabambz I just bought my Prius. yes, seems to piss people off, not supposed to use my heat and AC, have to put all my concentration into the special way to drive and not lose focus for a second, which pisses ME off. lol. If I just relax and drive it like a non hybrid, I dont know if Id get over 35 mpg. my old Escort gets that no matter how I drive, 80 mph with AC on and I'm totally relaxed driving it. Paid $500 for the Escort with new tires! $5500 for the Prius that I can't figure out how to really relax in (yet)!

      romansten9 that's more an issue with not buying the correct vehicle for your intended use, you are most likely using it out of it's efficiency range. 80mph is outside of probably every electric cars efficiency. At city speeds the Prius will dominate, if you want a highway efficient vehicle you should've bought something else.

    for low speeds, pulse and glide is best (town etc). At higher speed, constant speed is also very efficient because of heretical mode.

    Thanks! While great for country driving! I commute in my 2008 Prius and I constantly get tailgaters when I use cruise control. Gliding is not an option on a California freeway.

    I haven't tried any of this pulse and glide, I do however drive by not pounding it up hills (allow for a little bit of slowing) and using regen brakes as much as possible, slowing well before a stop without being ridiculously slow. I get about 4.1 to 4.3 litres/100 or 54-57mpgUS. With new battery and mostly 80km/h or less, though I have gone up to 100 and also up a big hill, still got 4.2L/100 due to rolling down the hilly road. Battery was filled to capacity.

      Since I use semis to break the wind, I end up pulsing up the hill and gliding down the hill to keep up, since downhill makes switching to electric mode easy.

    I dont think the fuel economy (if there is any) justify spending more time in traffic. Time is also money, not only fuel.

    Please pulse and glide all you want, in the right lane when the highway is not busy. I drive a hybrid but other hybrid drivers pisses me off for trying to pulse and glide on a busy highway on the left lane.

    If you are forced to go at higher speeds, you can often travel at 100km/h (62mph, max speed in New Zealand) if you are on a slight downgrade, by slightly pressing the accelerator so only the elec. motor is working. This takes almost no battery and you can recharge going up the hill. In ideal conditions it is possible to get 2.5-3.0 l/100km in this situation (but ideal conditions rarely happen).

    This is how motormen were taught to drive streetcars, to save power, and also because you couldn't decelerate electric motors - you could increase speed at a certain rate, , but to decelerate, you shut power off entirely and coasted, or braked if necessary.

    Auris MY15 Euro - best mpg 65.7 mpg or 3.58 l/100 km - how? 100% Eco Mode,
    always use the battery between 40% and 80%,
    always keep the needle at the half of the first eco section (on electricity or gas)
    always park your car with 40% battery life
    if there's a lot of accelerating and braking involved, use the battery between 80% and 90%.

    I put this in practice all the time and achieve 50 mpg without disturbing traffic behind me. Just accelerate to a decent speed of about 45 mph, then you can pulse and glide to maintain a decent speed. By the time the speed goes down, you're already breaking at a traffic light. As long as you won't pass 42 mph in a Prius 2010-2015, you're electric motor will be in charge.

    I Drove 1200Miles in a Prius rental without doing the P+G and got 60+ MPG US Gallons . See Below

    ... so if you need to go faster (31-40mph / 50-65kph) for your pulse and glide, I can get 2.5l/100km (94mpg US) as long as no-one gets behind me to disturb my cycle; it easily drops to 47mpg (US) as I speed up gradually if someone approaches from behind so I don't slow them up. My average ranges between 3.6-4.2l/100km, and 5.0km if doing a constant 100kmh (62mph).

    You know what also does "infinite mpg" at around 30 mph? a bicycle. I like efficient vehicles, but this seems really tedious compared to cruising at maybe 45-50 mph

    My Aunt is an extreme hypermiller.
    First she NEVER goes above the mid 40's. EVEN on the HWY ! !
    She never caries XTRA weight, EVER. She has removed seats from her CAR on LONG TRIPS alone !! !!
    She only EVER puts in 1/4 or LESS of a tank EVER.
    She RARELY runs the heater or AC or stereo ! !
    Her bulbs are ALL LED ! ! NO FILAMENTS...
    She had the first LITHIUM battery pack conversion in the state of NY.
    She refuses FAT friends rides as they are inefficient!
    THIS IS NOT A JOKE ! !

    So you accelerate and put your foot on the petal slightly? I was accelerating and taking foot off the pedal and getting better MPG. I'm just trying to clarify the pulse and glide technique

      Never driven a Prius but I think in terms of accelerator position from softest to hardest it's.
      Pedal not pressed - regenerative braking
      Slight pressure - nothing
      Light to medium pressure - electric motor propulsion
      Medium to heavy pressure - petrol engine of increasing power
      Heavy pressure - petrol engine and electric motor for maximum power
      The object is to accelerate at medium pressure - enough to fire up the engine but not make it roar, then switch to slight pressure so that the car is freewheeling, not converting kinetic energy to electricity (because you don't get as much back as you use).
      I'm sure there are times when it is better to not press the pedal down a hill to store up battery energy from the regenerative braking, and then use the electric motor to take advantage of the stored energy before another downhill charges the battery to full and can't store any more.

    hm i would say it does work also in a heavy Lexus RX450h because its over 4000lbs have much kinetic energy to coast ;-)

    Normally with my Peugeot 106 GTI 1.6 16v, I run about 10km per liter in city traffic. For the past days I ran my thirsty car on high octane Shell V-Power fuel and used the 'Pulse and Glide' technique in town when I could. Aside from P&G, I did everything else about right and didn't slow down other traffic. The difference was amazing! I went from 10km per liter to 17 which is (obviously) an improvement of 70% in fuel economy over the old driving style. The downside is that when i switch the engine off when coasting, I lose my powersteering and 70% of my brake pressure. Still, this is very doable and i'm amazed at the difference.

      I don't even start my car. I put it in neutral, push it myself downhill and use the momentum all the way to work. A lot of people horn but I pretend I've broken down.

    Good tutorial; one thing I would add is that, in New Zealand, drivers do NOT like anyone going at, or below, the speed limit. I use pulse and glide from (low-high) (31 - 40mph) - 40mph being the highest speed you can go before the Prius forces the engine into 'on' mode (even if doing infinite MPG, the engine is being turned to stop the elec. motors going to fast)...

      I think highways are optimal for this, since people can just pass you as needed. If you're on a rural street, make sure your pulse makes up for any slowdown from the glide if you have people behind you. Keeping up with someone in front should allow you to do it guilt free.

    Can some1 recommend: is it more hybrid-efficient to brake slowly or step hard? Which would give a bigger output. Also, I've got a ct200h, the charge is more or less when the arrow is at 0? (the harder i brake - the lower it gets)

      Braking gently is the best way to get the most from regenerative braking

      Think of it more like time breaking not how hard. If you brake too hard you will be using the pads and all that energy is wasted you want to stretch your braking as long as possible this makes sure all the energy possible to be recovered can be. around 48% on a mild temp day

      Probably won't affect the life unless you are running it down to low levels all the time. Plus you are bound to get hills where you'll use the regen brakes anyway ;p

      Spencer Johnston if done right it should not effect the charge of the battery much during the course of doing this. If done right it doesn't charge or discharge the battery much at all.

    I wonder if a pulse and glide mechanism could be built into a car so that it does it multiple times per second. The engine could cause each cylinder to misfire by not injecting any fuel every few cycles to maintain speed but have the throttle wide open to reduce engine braking. The car will essentially be coasting whenever the engine isn't firing and since engines produce the best thermal efficiency at peak torque at wide-open throttle, you'd end up saving fuel without having to speed up and slow down all the time (at least, you wouldn't notice the speeding up and slowing down the car would be doing many times per second).
    Hooking this engine up to a CVT would be the most economical since the transmission could keep it in the peak torque band all the time.
    Further still, maintaining the vehicle's most efficient speed would add to the savings. Usually around 45-50mph.

      I think it would be better to just not use some of the cylinders, although optimum results would be to be able to completely decouple the cylinders. This would be complicated in terms of needing two separate timing chains and a locking clutch in terms of evenly spacing the power strokes. The other problem is the firing order of a 4 cylinder engine makes it difficult to split up into two 2 cylinder halves that fire evenly.
      The other thing which is easier is to expand the range of top gears in the car. In most sports cars, the top gear ratio will be aligned so that the power peak and top speed are aligned on a level road with still air. At lower speeds, you can use an even higher gear. Perhaps a "drafting a truck on the highway at 55 mph" gear. In some cases the rpm you need might be below the peak BSFC but it will still get numbers adding a bit more load to the lower revs, than feathering high revs. In practice, these higher gears don't suit most rolling terrain driving conditions, but there are times where 1500 rpm at 70 mph might be optimal, in terms of decreasing the percentage of engine "rolling" resistance - especially if the engine is at least 1.6 liter.

      Thabie Melvin it works on any car. Just better on hybrids. Probably doesn't work with purely electri c cars though.

    Well the best way to accelerate is to do it in the best BSFC area, though to figure that out would require some sophisticated instrumentation and computer assist to figure that out. It has been my experience that the way to get the best fuel economy in an automatic is still to basically accelerate relatively gently, trying to shift into the highest gear as quickly as possible. Harder acceleration means shifting at 3K+ RPM per gear instead of 1500RPM.

      I think with an automatic it's a bit harder to get into the minimum BSFC as it keeps downshifting to the higher rpm whenever you try to get the load up with the accelerator pedal.

    I try to use similar techniques in my gas car, but it doesn't work unless you turn off the engine each time, then you are wearing on the starter.
    It seems like this technique would be very good for approaching signal lights, etc., so as not to anger following drivers too much.

      Heath Ledger you shouldn't do it with an automastic anyway unless it's cvt. With a manual trans just kick the clutch to restart.

    I checked it out before we bought our Prius. California mandates that hybrid batteries are warranted for 150,000 miles. Many other cars don't even last that long.

    That's what 'pulse and glide' is? All this time, I thought it was some advanced hypermiling technique, but it's basically what I do in my CRV.
    Of course, except my CRV is a baby gas guzzler and it's engine doesn't turn off mid-drive.

    If I drive my Prius "correctly," I can average 47 mpg, Ive gotten as high as 72 mpg so far with a tailwind.
    If I drive my Prius really gently, but keeping up with traffic with cruise and AC on, what do I get? Its new to me, not sure but maybe 35 mpg? maybe less?

    P&G is great as long as it doesn't affect others. I P&G in regular automatic vehicles (traffic permitting) only in them you coast off the throttle at above about 45 (depending on gearing) which engages fuel cut mode where the injectors aren't being pulsed then just as the injectors kick back in you accelerate as hard as you can without the torque converter unlocking or the trans downshifting, when you reach about 60 you let all the way off again.

      Although a Citroen C2 will probably get almost as good as that round the Nordschleife at speed. Or bikes, where you can ride it like you stole it and still get 50 mpg.

      When do you fill up? I normally fill up at 2 bars or definitely at 1 bar. Don't want to run out of fuel XD Or else I just fill up at 800km

    It does not go into gear when you coast and part of the difficulty with P+G on the prius is that you have to finesse the throttle so that when you're gliding, the arrows aren't going into or out of the battery. I think the ECO mode in the 2010+ Prius should make that easier to do. I've read conflicting information about whether switching to neutral at speed over and over is ok in the Prius or not. Good news on a pure EV car though is that it really is ok to switch into neutral.

      imzjustplayin from what I can tell, neutral is not helpful at all. If you put it in neutral while the engine is on it will stay on. If you do it while it's off, it will discharge the traction battery (the electric motor engage while gliding to reduce drag) and the motor will kick back on to recharge the traction battery.

    Use 15 ' tires if you want to save 0.4-0.5 L/100 Km ...

    Wouldn't be easier to switch the gear box to neutral an coast? You would then not have to work all the time on holding the pedal at the right spot.

      Yeah in the Prius the engine is off in neutral. It might be tedious to keep your foot on the pedal, but also might be tedious to always flip the lever to N or D

      Benedikt HRO engine so t shut off if you kick it into nutral while running. If you kick it I to neutral while it's off it'll use battery, which will force the engine on to charge the battery. Not as efficient. Doing the technique in this vid doesn't discharge the battery and shuts the engine off during glides.

    Many high voltage caps in rows, alternating like pulse drive.
    Placing two horizontal counter syncronouse flywheels:78k each. Under or within chasie.
    One vertical for your smaller motor. Generating as we go,
    Wheals can be.

    As those wheel keep turning, know that it can be given back in mass, to say swiftly would be appropriate.

    Okay, wait. You can trick the engine off. Huh. But you're saving enough that stopping and starting the engine is still net positive?

    @rhopilema That is why you don't do this when there are people behind you. Some would do this even in traffic and they are the kooks that give the rest of the Prius drivers a bad name.

    Actually this doesn't sound right to me, the kinetic energy use for acceleration is lost due to driving resistance and drag.
    The energy need to move the mass is constant base on those two factores, so "Pulse and Glide" will not yeald anythinger over at constant speed with the same avg. speed and transit time. Higer speed equal more drag equal greater energy loose, so the reason he gets better digits are simply lower avg. speed causes less resistance and drag, resulting in better fuel efficiency.
    But the Pulse and Glide is NOt the cause, the lower resistance and drag however is, it's all a matter physics.

      Milan Olsen I guess the only way to explain this would be due to less energy loss in the engien it self. The energy loss due to drag and friction would remain the same, but friction in the engien at 1000 rpm is lower then at 2000 rpm. However energy loss in due to transmission is only a few percent at this speed i guess you could save a litle bit by doing this. Atleast thats what i can make out of puls and glide. btw, if it would be possible to turn of the engien totally during your glide you would save even more, how ever this is really dangerous!! (excepts in hybrid vechicals)

      No you are wrong . the purpose of pulse and glide is that an engine internal frictions is not proportional to the effort it gives,; it is ,at low speed, bigger than the frictions of the car. Conclusion : if you stiop the engin you suppress engine friction, half of the time, you will suppress half of the friction . On classic car (VW golf) i experiment this mode of driving at low speed on 50 mph ,20 % more mpg . Much more efficient than constant speed.

      If you drove up a hill and coasted on the way down you get max fuel economy. Similar concept. Maximize energy.

      A throttle position on the HSD allows you to completely disengage the transmission during glides, allowing the Prius to glide for much longer than a conventional vehicle. No drag from conventional transmission gears, or the engine (unless you invoke the latter via regenerative braking).
      I do this everyday, but ensure that I NEVER impede traffic while doing so.
      With time, you learn to do this even in fast moving traffic automatically, while moving with the flow of traffic without impeding it in any way.

    You can drive less sleepy and still get good MPG. Method shown in the video is NOT possible for daily implementation. There is traffic, lanes, other cars... Even for the left lane this is horribly slow. Do not drive like this, please.

      There will always be a driver who thinks you are driving too slow, regardless of the speed you are driving. You can’t (shouldn’t try to) please everyone. Impatient drivers are their own problem.

    not impressed with prios at all 1995 audi 80 tdi with ladders on roof stop start all day every day for last 14yr 60mpg thats uk probebly 55mpg us we have very high fuel prices in uk you in us are not teaching us anything wouldnt buy anything more modern as there more complex with more weight and are not any more fuel effiecent
