    Somewhere a prior floor manager at Ibanez is keeping some tight lips regarding the origins of this guitar after the Ibanez marketing guy told him, "Just pull one from regular stock. Look it's gotta come from our department budget anyway, not the production budget. Just refinish it ! Get it shipped out and get it done by next Monday for the marketing promo deadline!"

  • @amphetamineblue4172
    @amphetamineblue4172 3 года назад +19

    They were making loads of floral jems at the time. They probably just pulled a finished body off the production line as it would be easier to paint over that than refinish an unpainted body

      Perhaps at the time Ibanez didn't know people today would cry over the fact that they painted over a floral jem. So they just did what was easiest at the the time. Or perhaps it's just me that thinks it was a terrible thing to have done to floral jem. Probably lol.

    Painting over a messed up finish is the most common practice at guitar factories.
    My first job in the late 80's was at the Washburn factory HQ and any finish flaws were usually sent to the Black spray booth. Anything that could not be fixed by a new paint job was cut into 3 pieces and junked. They were very strict on not letting employees take home mistakes. Hamer guitar...witch was right down the street from Washburn was the same way, about re-finish and trashing mistakes.

    • @svenben9868
      @svenben9868 Год назад +1

      yea. I believe all guitar brands are on board with flawed guitars. The problem with giving employees the oppurtunity to take them home is that eventually they all end up on the 2nd hand market. Flawed guitars that arent disclosed as such can give a brand negetive looks. ya know...

    Maybe the idea for a present to you came up somewhat late, so they took what they already knew that you like (FP JEM) and went from there to make it more special. Great sounding instrument!

    it would look so good if you could tear the top layer paint from top to bottom over the middle section to reveal the beauty within kind of thing. Impossible to do I'd imagien but that'd be like a frankensrat guitar but instead of red, white and black strips it'd be artwork underneath cause that exposed floral part looks incredible contrasting the blue in the video. Such a cool 1 of a kind guitar man.

    I’d be really curious what it says in the neck pocket and on the neck heel, if its stamped or anything handwritten. Do you know if it came from Japan or California? The neck is most probably a wizard I stamped RG550R. My guess is they didn’t have any blank Jem bodies so they grabbed a FP off the line if it came from Japan. If it came from Cali, then who knows, that could have been some extra bodies they had for Steve, sadly Mike Lipe isn’t with us and he would probably know or have a hand in it, but if he touched it then he probably signed it.

    I always wanted a floral JEM, but I could never afford it at the time. By the time I could afford one, they didn't make them anymore. So, a 7VWH it was. Speaking of which, the neck on it is ridiculously thin. When I go from a Strat to it, it's like I'm playing a toy, lol.

  • @cryeyres1610
    @cryeyres1610 3 года назад

    The action is very low, the strings seem loose (bouncy/lighter gauge) & easy to bend, thin neck, the frets seem a little bit closer to each other & make it easy to do some crazy stretch. That's a 'metal' guitar indeed. Too bad, it's really hard for me playing stuff like that on Fender strat. That seems to be my case since I only have an old strat with tight strings (heavier gauge), so what I can do best is just busting AC/DC riffs with low gain. 😅😣

    Great looking guitar & sounds fantastic . I wander if that's a wizard neck Ibanez put on there. Got one on my RG. Wish Ibanez would put a wizard neck on a line of Jems with the all access neck joint.

    Hi Thomas amazing tale. Can you compare the neck of your guitar with a super wizzard neck whose measures are 17mm (thickness at first fret ) and 19mm ( thickness at 12th fret )? amazing playin' btw.

    I can't play on a thin neck. My favorite neck is a custom guitar neck with a 1 inch piece of Roasted Maple. And 16 radius fretboard.

    I have an Ibanez RG5EX1 that was originally pewter grey. I sanded the paint off and found a transparent black quilted maple top. I was totally surprised. So I cleared it and that's how it remains.
    I also had a 98 S470DX that was black. I sanded the paint off and found emerald green sparkle underneath.
    So maybe Ibanez does this a lot. Dunno....

    man I would love to get a custom voiced DiMarzio set... Steve Blucher and Larry DiMarzio are awesome. I've enjoyed many other pickup brands (Fishman fluence impressed the most lately) but there is something so *rich and organic* about the best DiMarzio pickups, in my opinion.

    Great guitar. Great video. I loved the first video.
    Would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see a video of your signal chain. I know you have to be using Eventide effects a little I'm guessing! They just sound killer. Great stuff. Thanks for sharing.

    I would like to know his opinion of baritone electric guitars, especially the Ibanez RGIB6 or 21. I've recently discovered this series and have actually ordered a 21. I can't wait to get it and plug it in. It comes tuned to Low B. I've always played in Standard E or Drop D (low E string). Watched a few review/demo videos, it's gotten great reviews and sounds amazing.

    It's certainly unique!!
    Mind though you can certainly hear the Steve Vai influence all over your playing!!!
    It's a different style than mine!!My style is more like another past Ibanez endorsee Frank Gambale!
    But unfortunately Ibanez don't give me guitars!!

    The lightness and brightness may be because of your tremolo block. I noticed how long the sustain of it was, and the metal is really bright. You may have a titanium block connected to the springs. I upgraded my LTD ALEXI-200 with it, and it did all of those things for me.

    Just picked up a JEM ‘88 just got it by sheer luck, owned by a rich guy who didn’t play and sat in a closet for 20 years. I’m getting it set up with 9’s I know, I know but at my age doing a 3 set night until 2 AM ain’t as easy as used to be. I thin the sheer joy keeps me going. Looking forward to pluggin’ this baby in 🎶🎸❤️

    Maybe the guys from ibanez decided to make one floral jem to give to you, and, someone said..."hey, it's very previsible gift....we have to surprise him!!!". The fastest solution, paint it over the floral!

    I like the sort of stuff you play on this channel. Do you have any albums like that? Bad4Good and McRocklin & Hutch are totally different kinds of music. I'd like to hear just a bunch of albums with this sort of playing and guitar tones as the main focus. Instrumental albums would be even better. Got any?

    Haha, had no idea that kid from Vais video even could play, let alone still played. Super cool channel, really like the specific guitar videos. Is it Really Tonys BC Rich you have back there? You are a great player, but with an unique aspect as being, perhaps the only kid shred star ever. Very unique and interesting. So glad i found this. Regards from Sweden!

    How does one get a CUSTOM JEM? I've been trying diligently to get Ibanez to build a custom for almost 20 years & was told they don't do 'em. Guess you gotta be somebody, $$ ain't enough.

    I have recently refretted my rg570ct, which had a very worn fretboard (from 7th to 15th fret) so I had to sand it down in order to level it, finishing with the thinnest neck I have ever seen. I was afraid about the neck stability, but it is perfect!!and now I have new super jumbo jescar stainless steel frets!!!

    Honestly who care they painted over a jem....its a jem! Lmao...they could've dipped it in crap and i wouldve been happy to play it. Haha...but it is kinda chince in the sense that i wouldve expected something one of kind in its own way. Still a beautiful guitar.

    I think you have a floral jam under that finish because it was probably a blemished floral jem. The easiest thing to do with a blemished body to fix it, is to spray it an opaque colour. Clearly they can’t use that refinished body on a guitar and send it to a dealer, so as your guitar was free, they probably thought let’s just refinish it for Thomas and give it away, then you can’t really complain about it.
