  • Have you ever had a sliver, splinter or item stuck UNDERNEATH your fingernail? In this video I show you how (and how NOT TO) pull a sliver out from underneath a fingernail. I show my many painful attempts to take it out, and show you how I FINALLY got it out! If it worked for me, it could work for you, too!

had a similar splinter since yesterday-- soaked in hot salty water after it first happened and then waited for my body to eject it. after about 28 hours (yes it was sore, but OTC pain medication made it tolerable) it was starting to peek out from the nail bed enough that i could use tweezers to push the tip of the splinter against my nail and drag it up/out. no digging! many splinters will be ejected by the body if you can be somewhat patient. didn't even use any of the internet 'hacks' like taping epsom salts or sugar&soap to the splinter to 'draw it out'. the body will typically do this on its own! good luck out there everyone!

I can only imagine the pain! I once got 4 small sliver wood splinters one and each of my fingers except the thumb. I am a carpenter and was cutting wood vinyl planks made of bamboo with my table saw, and when I got done, I slid my hand to get rid of the dust and lodged four in there. I can only imagine the pain of having one under your fingernail the bigger it is the less it hurts the smaller the splinter the more painful it is! Thanks for posting this video, sharing awareness of the dangers of working with wood and putting a video out on how to remove one. Hope all is well.

Ouch! Your story sounds PAINFUL! I got this one picking up a piece of paper on a bleacher in a school gym. Apparently the wood was sticking up under the paper, so I couldn't see it before lodging it under my nail. It was longer and originally stuck out way past my nail, but I broke it off in an effort to remove it. I had this splinter under my nail for about 24 hours until I could get the right tool to remove it. It wasn't fun, but I eventually got it!

I had a similar situation with a splinter. I inserted a syringe needle under it pressing against the fingernail from below. The splinter was strong and remained in one piece. The moment it started moving it was extremely painful, which I didn't expect, and wouldn't have dared to pull it if I had known. Urgent care would just use some of these same tools with extreme prejudice at disinfecting. Jesus, overnight delivery. It's like a sci-fi world over there.

Yeah, it's surprising how painful it is to move stuff under your fingernail. Even after I took it out, I felt "phantom" pain - like my brain was remembering the weird kind of pain that came from that!

Did you get some precision tweezers like the ones I used in the video? Once I had the right tool (I had to order next day delivery from Amazon), it was a quick removal.

Thank you soo much for posting this video. It was so helpful seeing how you worked that splinter out. I watched the video, then set in to take out my own splinter. I trimmed the nail right back and then used some sharp nail clippers to get the splinter out and within 1 minute I had it removed! Ha! And there I was thinking there’d be blood everywhere and I’d be screaming in pain lol!

I'm SO GLAD it worked out for you! I regretted not getting the precision tweezers right away. I can't believe I had that in my nail for an entire day! I know it doesn't look like much, but as you know, it feels just AWFUL!

I FOUND A TOPICAL NUMBING CREAM ON AMAZON ... got the 5% Lidocaine version.
To creator: I'm so sorry you went through this! It looks so painful!! I ordered the tweezers.
🙏 Hoping the tweezers and numbing cream get the job done!

Yeah, topical would have been helpful! It was definitely unpleasant BUT once I had the right tool, it was easy! I only wish I had gotten the precision tweezers without trying other strategies for a whole day! 😆 Let me know how it works out.

The original splinter was as long as my fingernail, but it broke when I pulled it out, leaving this shard under my nail. I'm SO RELIEVED that I didn't have to destroy my nail to get it out!
