Under the old rules, you didn't have to step off the rubber to throw to first. You did have to complete a pitch once you started it however. A lot of lefthanded pitchers got very good at disguising where they throwing the ball, to the point that the start of their pick off move and delivery looked identical. Right handers obviously can't do this on a throw to first. It's a moot point now however, because the rules now state that everyone has to step off before throwing to first.
@@itsmiso2873 Yeah, that was a mistake on my part. I misread the release that they were trying it out in the minors, as a rule change they implemented. Still, the numbers speak for themselves. A 75% increase in stolen bases. That's absolutely BONKERS. There have always been more stolen bases in the minors, but if they put this into place with the mound distance change, MLB might actually make it worth the risk for guys to take off.
Damn Kershaw has a great move. Not in the compilation is Julio Urias, his move is ridiculous. Pick-off of Bryce Harper in the post season back in 2016 was legendary.
The only obvious balk I saw was at 1:44. He steps towards home and throws to first. As a lefty you have to make sure that you're step is towards first, you can't step towards home and throw to first. I'm pretty surprised the umpire let that one go.
Thank you. I was wondering the same thing. He gave That about to pitch then pick off. The best at it and led the league in 1996. I believe in other years as well
The one by Pineda at 1:51 is a blatant balk. If you watch it at 0.25 speed you will notice that the runners forward motion is correlated with the initial movement of Pineda's front foot. This is the correct motion to make obviously if he has the steal sign, but the umpire clearly wasn't watching his feet. Not to mention the shoulder turn that follows before the back foot even moves.
0:41 was safe from what I saw. I watched it at .5, .25, .10, and .06 speed and he splashed some dirt over the bag but he definitely looked safe from the angle shown. But maybe I'm just crazy.
I need slow motion to really see this. I find it hard to see the pitchers footwork to get off the rubber. Some of the pitchers clearly hop off, some of the lefty's are so close to looking like balks, I dunno?
Doesn't matter if you are a lefty or a righty. The rule applies to both equally. There is no pitching rule that specifies what a righty or lefty can do.
Alan you're partially correct. MLB rules concentrate on the pivot foot, therefore there ARE different rules for lefties when throwing to first base. Obviously these rules apply to righties when throwing to third base. Just some FYI...
Cory, No, there are not different rules. The rule book makes no mention of right hand or left hand pitchers. Simply put, it is much more difficult for a right hand pitcher to step and throw to first so they use the spin move to throw to first. But the rules are the same for both.
Jack Petry If you don't move towards home plate, you can throw over to first without stepping off if you are left-handed. Balks happen when a pitcher interrupts his motion to the plate.
How is the first one not a balk? I went frame by frame and Cueto absolutely twitched his front leg before moving his right leg. It goes 7 frames before Cueto even moves his right leg. Awful missed call...
Nevermind, I thought it said great pick up moves.
Sadge
Still relevant
I just came here from a balk video
I am now more confused than ever

From what I believe of the pitcher is going in a. Option towards home plate and steps of then it is not a balk if they try to pickoff
dude im with you
@@CanadaMMA Isn't that just being tested in High-A right now? I didn't think it had made its way up to MLB yet.

I was looking for any Phillies being picked off. Then I realized that in order to get picked off, they first need to get on base.
David Korr lol
David Korr lmao laughing so hard cuz I'm a met fan xD
mets deserve to laugh right now the last few years since after getting their ass beat for 6 years straight from 2006-2012. maybe longer than that.
David Korr ohooooo ROASTED micdrop 🎤

0:48 "let's go deez nuts"
Aniik Patel it was supposed to be “let’s go d-backs but yeah I know it sounds like that 😂
I have been a baseball fan for almost 40 years and I had never seen someone get picked off from 3rd base until this video
Yeah, second base pickoffs are pretty rare too
Damn Kershaw has a great move. Not in the compilation is Julio Urias, his move is ridiculous. Pick-off of Bryce Harper in the post season back in 2016 was legendary.
Pettite still the best pick-off move ever!
This video is incomplete without him.
lol 1:00 "He gon."
none ya white sox announcer he does that in every out
If you liked that, watch this video, lol. ruclips.net/video/lg2G0wtICa0/видео.html
Classic "Hawk" Harrelson. :)
I love when they away team picks off the home team and hearing the crowd boo :)
You should've showed George Brett's 3,000th hit where he was picked off after the celebration. One of the funniest things I seen in baseball.
Some really nice pickoffs. The equalizer. Was fun to watch. Great video
Dodgers are the masters of picking off yes!
The pickoff at 0:26 was so smooth imo.
i love baseball
cool i am in kid pich
this is my first year cluch Gaming TV
i got hit almost 100 times because i am really buff and strong
And I love you 😘
Cole Haynes me too
You got to love how Altuve nods in appreciation for Kershaws pick off move.
Dodgers have an awesome pitching staff
Ok ur a bandwagon
Adidas Zinto your an idiot.
Jordan Baker you're*
man boy how's that .322 team ERA working out?
cj f well, the Dodgers are first in the NL West and Alex Wood is pitching fantastically as I type this with a 1-0 lead over the dbacks do pretty well
Where's Jon Lester at??!!!
Zac Goode LOL
Zac Goode underrated comment
Where's Andy Pettitte at?
But he had a fantabulous pick off move .
Yes i would love to see a video of all of Baez's errors
1:01 "he gone"
No pickoff to win a world series game? Uehara gets the shaft again
What really made me happy is that I saw the dodgers a lot in this video
1:44 look were he steps smh
Where?
Businessegy it’s a balk, that’s what he is saying
That’s a balk. He stepped towards home
@@jakobwaack4148 not just that he didn't step off either
Pretty sick moves
I know it's too old for this video, but Terry Mulholland had the best pickoff move I've ever seend.
Alex Torres did some pick off move where he took off his cap to distract the runner then back step pick to first
0:11 I was at that game.
Kershaw lost the lead in the 9th and the 'Stros had the walk off win in the 10th
You missed Uehara picking off Wong in the 2013 World Series
More Wong being stupid than Uehara having a great move
Sick dude
Melvin Upton Jr. was known as BJ during his stint in Atlanta. His brother, Justin Upton played in Atlanta too
Where’s Andrew Eugene Pettitte? Greatest move of all time!
“And Altuve is picked off”
And america cheered
Poor guy. Get a life.
If I have to hear Hawk Harrelson say "he gone" one more time I'm going to drive my car into a volcano
Mad at the Hawk?
E gon
mmmmmmm, he gone
U forgot Julio Urias pick off move💪🏼🙌🏼🔥
Think y’all should have added Jon Lester’s pick off of Tommy Pham and played both clips. Especially loved hearing the Cardinals announcer eating crow.
First time I've ever seen Chapman pitch under 100 miles an hour on a highlight reel.
Lol 1:08, the runner's desperation, then the look on his face after he realizes he was tagged.
this is a great video. it doesnt show 500 replays of the same play and waste my time. high quality
2:36 I really liked that one! Really quick
The amount of balks is unreal! Drove me crazy that the home plate ump didn't catch them.
Tell us which ones were balks and why.
The only obvious balk I saw was at 1:44. He steps towards home and throws to first. As a lefty you have to make sure that you're step is towards first, you can't step towards home and throw to first. I'm pretty surprised the umpire let that one go.
Thanks I needed that nap
How is Tony Cingrani not in this? He has one of if not the best left handed pick off moves in baseball
Hosmer picked that ball in the perfect spot
There's something strangely satisfying about seeing Jose Altuve get picked off.
Where's Andy Pettitte?
I came here to write that exact sentiment! Nobody was better at pick offs than Andy!
exactly!
Thank you. I was wondering the same thing. He gave That about to pitch then pick off. The best at it and led the league in 1996. I believe in other years as well
“Got him!”
Another great pickoff move was when Joe Nathan (DET) picked off Jarrod Dyson (KC) in the 9th inning on 2nd base
Here's a comment you made from 4 years ago. Enjoy
So you make a video about pickoffs but you don't have Julio Teheran seems legit
This video just goes to show what a huge advantage it is for a pitcher to be a lefty.
Dodgers have just mastered the pick off move art form
I ❤ LOVE BASEBALL
2:00 should have been called a balk. Front foot moved first. Was visible by naked eye, but obvious on slow motion.
Cool Video!
If the replay system existed by that time, 75% of these calls would be safe
How do you not have any by Andy Pettitte. by far the best pickoff move in baseball
1:50 both of the next two moves are bawks
2013 world series had a great one that should have been on this list

Commodore Cam, No, that is not a balk.
Question: When the baseman has the ball, does he need to tag the runner or just touch the base?
There must be a tag on the runner.
subscribed!!!!
No julio teheran? Best pickoff move in baseball
I have heard that Warren Spahn had an incredible pick-off move. I can't find a video of that. Something for you to look into?
1:07 clearly interference. How is springer suppose to get back? Pujols is literally crouching right in the base line.
i love baesball
Kershaw froze trash cans with that move
This should just be an Andy Petite highlight reel
0:41 was safe from what I saw. I watched it at .5, .25, .10, and .06 speed and he splashed some dirt over the bag but he definitely looked safe from the angle shown. But maybe I'm just crazy.
Jack Petry naaa he was out the dirt splash was the runners hand hitting the glove I had too wash it in slow motion like 20 times too see it
Ya u are
The dodgers rule at this
Los Angeles Dodgers
Can you do mlb pitchouts?
Mark Buehrle has one of the best pickoff moves ever...unless Joe West is umping his game.
I need slow motion to really see this. I find it hard to see the pitchers footwork to get off the rubber. Some of the pitchers clearly hop off, some of the lefty's are so close to looking like balks, I dunno?
Wandering Wade some of them were balks
It ain’t a balk unless the umpire calls it a balk! ;-)
Doesn't matter if you are a lefty or a righty. The rule applies to both equally. There is no pitching rule that specifies what a righty or lefty can do.

LHPer's have a huge advantage
1:02 he gone
got em
I saw Deion Sanders get picked off 3rd when he played for the Louisville Bats. Needless to say, he was pissed.
Some of those were balks
I was thinking that too. But maybe because most of the pitchers were lefty they didn't need to jump towards the base but just off the rubber?
Jack Petry correct
Jack Petry If you don't move towards home plate, you can throw over to first without stepping off if you are left-handed. Balks happen when a pitcher interrupts his motion to the plate.
BT Squad no they were not
BT Squad none of them were balks I'm a ump
0:30 that’s a balk Rith there the pitch make the move on the mount and then pickoff ,sad the umpire say lt was out
Pretty sure Verlander has the best move in the league.
Wrong Julio Teheran
Can't wait for the new step off rule to be introduced in the majors.
Amazed you missed Koji's pickoff of Wong in game 4 of the 2013 World Series. It ended the fawkin game guy.
If I don't see Hendricks I'm done
wheres julio urias
Kershaw!!😎
1:05 The Comentater "He Gone"!! He said it so weird
Should do players with multi error games?
How can you have a pickoff video without Julio Teheran?
I really hate having to rewind the video so much just to see his move again, can you pls show replays
Seemed like both the Red Sox pitchers could have been a balk.
You forgot the absolute greatest pick-off artist in history.....
JON LESTER!!!!!!!
kershaw is so dangerous.
How do you not put the Koji pick off in the World Series?
Altuve was taking a nap on Kershaw
Not a single game-ender? I know that's happened a few times recently.
Dodgers the best
The two lefty moves by the Red Sox pitcher are balks. He made two moves with his free foot, down, then over. That's hesitation and a balk.
The thin line between pickoff and balk...
Koji.
I was at the Astros game that Dat
I've seen the most slight twitch of the front knee be called a balk. These guys are picking their whole legs up! How aren't these balks?
they're stepping off the rubber with their dominant foot, which is legal. Doing so with your front foot is a balk.
How is the first one not a balk? I went frame by frame and Cueto absolutely twitched his front leg before moving his right leg. It goes 7 frames before Cueto even moves his right leg. Awful missed call...
