  • Every situation is different. I generally show the best parts or the parts most interesting about horse logging but the daily grind is generally just a calmer and more steadily paced rhythm.

I've come across your channel by happenstance. Your team and you seem perfectly balanced. You're a great handler and your team is awesome. Your craft is one not lost on me, I'm in for more. Looks like a good ride.

When I was a kid back in the 50’s they had horse and mule pulling contests at the county fairs around our area. My dad’s friend had a pair of horses (I’m not sure of the breed, but they were huge to me) that always were winners. He trained them by hooking them up to the front of his big grain truck and having them pull it. He would have someone get on the brakes and they wouldn’t be able to move it. When they had tried hard and the dirt was flying, they would let off the brakes just enough to let them have a victory. He never used a whip, just talked to them. I think he was training them psychologically to believe that if they worked hard enough, they could pull anything. Sort of a good lesson in life. At the fair they had a big sled with weight on it. The man driving the team would back them up to the sled where there was a type of hitch with a big steel ring. The team’s tree had a similar hitch and when the two hitches were mated up, a large steel pin would be dropped into the hitch. The horses were already tense and ready to pull. When they heard that pin drop, it was their signal to hit it.

Love the channel. I've never really watched draft horses work except at the county fairs. It's much more interesting to watch them do their routine work with you. It's good for the horses and you to do a good hard pull occasionally to learn the limits and capabilities of the team. But I agree that all out effort pulls will burn out a team quick. I enjoy watching them obey your commands. They're a lot smarter than some people I've worked with...LOL

I live in central Virginia and I have seen advertising for horse logging and wondered how this was accomplished. Your video answered my questions. Horse logging seems easier on the environment and land and if the horses are well taken care of it a great alternative to mechanical skidding. I enjoyed watching and learning what you do and appreciate how well you care for your beautiful horses. When I decide to cut timber on my property, I'll be hiring someone who uses horses to remove the logs. I look forward to other videos.

Thank you. Glad I could help educate about the process. It's much easier on the land and a great way to preserve and care for the woods.

Such gracious beings work horses, and they are super clever. Used to ride work horses when young, they took well care of us but when they got fed up with us they faked a limp or refused to go any further, they were great teachers. If I could wish for one thing, that would be a nice wee ramp when off loading them, just to avoid them straining or stepping into a hole. Apart from that I think you are doing a great job and show respect to your animals. Good on you. We should use horses more in forestry, they destroy less on the land, it may take a bit longer but so much better for nature. This is what these horses were bred for as well. Shame to see the work horses disappear because we don't use them. I love what you do, and to be honest, those complaining don't know nothing about horses. x
