It's harder to score points with punches. It's not legal to punch to the head, so the athletes need to punch to the body, and the punch needs to be hard enough to register on the sensors. Additionally, a head kick is an automatic 3-points. Therefore, if someone goes in to punch, the other fighter could kick over the top and touch the helmet, so whoever punches needs to dart in quick, hit really hard, and then clinch up so there is no room to get counter-kicked.
It's a sport with original rules. A game. It not supposed to be real fighting. Taekwondo is a martial arts and Olympic taekwondo is a sport/game nothing wrong with that. KPNP will destroy this sport. Lots of shots that should've scored and nothing on the board. The only ones that understand why a point is scored and the other one not are only the ones who really know the sport. It's very confusing for a normal viewer, even if you have someone explaining next. Not helping at all in bringing more views on TV. Stupid decision to bring KPNP on the Olympics. Really stupid.
Electronic scoring pads. Got to hit it with enough snap or it won't score. Not that hard to understand Still I love 90s taekwondo better where only hard kicks that move the opponent scores and weak kicks don't counts.

TKD died, this is not the TKD i use to do, and love. this is foot fencing
These so called foot fencers would finish you in less than a round.

It seems like they rarely if ever threw any punches. Is this kicking only? Not trying to be sarcastic. This just seems like a really odd sport.

Punches in Taikwando is generally frowned upon and you can only land 1 punch at a time.
Kicks are worth more points and since they keep a long stance and a distance it’s harder to move into a range where you can punch for a point.
