Just as a note for anyone with film series - you can edit the "sort title" by clicking the pencil so that they appear in chronological order. For example, the Harry Potter films can have their sort titles changed to "Harry Potter 1", "Harry Potter 2", etc., so that they will still show the full film title in your library but will be sorted in series order rather than alphabetically.
I used the Plex Media server in my synology for a couple weeks, then realized the CPU in the NAS was at 99%. Because I was using a PC anyway, I decided to revert back to having Plex on my spare PC and just store the files on my NAS. Much betteer transcoding now!!!!
That means it wasn't hardware transcoding, but software transcoding. Unfortunately hardware transcoding is a paid Plex Pass feature...

My dad did this too and he loves it, his work just built a 40 terabyte synology custom for his Plex pc and he is allready building a pc dedicated to plex that’ll be done this week, he’s been downloading movies for years and I think we just hit 4K movies and 2k tv shows with about 6k in epidoses
2k shows would be wayyyyy more than 6k episodes
@@darkbeen I've got 633 shows and 35871 episodes so I tend to agree but maybe they like mini series or just having a handful of episodes or something... At least they're not claiming to have 6k shows and 2k episodes ;)

Yes! This is great! My only comment to new viewers? Go to settings (here in RUclips) and choose the highest quality your monitor can handle. The images will be easier to follow. (Maybe this states the obvious, but this was so helpful, I watched it again in high-res)
Hey instead of creating an own library for Haloween and kids movies you can create your own genre for it.
No need for the SRT files as Plex has a feature where it will go and find them for you, you pick the one that works best. Any manually added SRT files should end or be renamed with the two letter language code which they are in, i.e. EN.SRT for an English language subtitle, otherwise it will show up as "Unknown external" in the drop down for the target movie.
What if the movie (mkv) was remuxed to absorb the .SRT as part of the mkv?
Hey I am setting up my NAS server and I have a DS918+. I manually installed Plex by downloading the package from the Plex website. When I initially opened it and created the plex folder, it worked fine then a few hours later, when I tried to open up Plex on synology, it says "the site can't be reached." What am I doing wrong here? When I go to package center, it says error by the Plex package
"Once those are transferend" is a key quote here. I'm currently transferring files from one harddrive to my brand new Synology 918+. The usb-ports on the Synology are painfully slow. My 500 gig folder is estimated to take 2 days to transfer. And I have and additional 4.5 TB on that drive that I want to transfer over before I can go ahead and set up my plex. If the transfer is finished by Halloween I'd be happy....
I have two DS1821+ units, and I find that the Plex app for Synology is not sufficiently stable to be useable when it is running on my Synology, as it locks up and crashes all the time. When I moved the Plex app to my Windows 10 workstation, but left the media files on my NAS, it works fine. The Plex app running on Windows 10 is stable, and doesn't really put much of a load on my workstation. It can support 4 sessions running on iPads, iPhones, etc. with no problem.
I can't find the plex folder in shared folder and when I tried to add movies from any other folder then it says your folder is empty
Worth noting that a more powerful machine may be needed, depending on your video format and transcode needs. I used to run Plex on my Drobo 5N, but it just wasn't powerful enough.
I ended up buying a late 2011 Mac Mini with a 4 core i7 to run Plex and set up time schedules so the Mac sleeps between 2am and 8am.

Very roughly speaking, for a single full-transcode of a video, the following PassMark score requirements are a good guideline for the following average source file:
4K HDR (50Mbps, 10-bit HEVC) file: 17000 PassMark score (being transcoded to 10Mbps 1080p)
4K SDR (40Mbps, 8-bit HEVC) file: 12000 PassMark score (being transcoded to 10Mbps 1080p)
1080p (10Mbps, H.264) file: 2000 PassMark score
720p (4Mbps, H.264) file: 1500 PassMark score

@@adamdowney3274 I think you’ll need more than just the wee processor a NAS comes with to transcode 4K. You’d need a more powerful box to connect it to, or build your own NAS box with a decent processor and run something like FreeNAS on it.
@@ScottLewis123 thanks for the reply. So the NAS would only be useful to direct play within my own network, on devices that have the 4k ability. I've already started watching custom builds lol
@@adamdowney3274 I'd think so, but you'd need to test even with Direct play through plex, as I'm not sure if it still does some processing - not something I've tested. I use my Plex server extensvely outside of my home network, as does my family, so Transcode performance was the most important to me. If you're only using it locally at native resolutions you may not need too powerfull of a machine - but if you're looking to transocde 4k 10bit to 1080p even internally I'd say you'd be better with a custom build. They're not as expensice as you'd think either. If/When my Drobo and/or Mac die, I'll probably go that rout. Hope this helps :)
im using the 1815 with extended ram but found it just wasnt great at multi transcoding. I ended up just using my synology for media but the server oftware runs on my Ryzen 3700x streaming pc.
Similar setup. Started using the Synology for both the data and Plex media server, but realized it's definitely not powerful enough for many concurrent users. Just grab another PC/Server to run PMS and point it at the NAS for the media.
Hi Brett, great video! I have not seen one exactly like this before. Could you please do a video on ripping DVDs and BDs? Especially with how to create the optional subtitle files. Also, some tips on naming and organizing the files for movies as well as TV shows would be helpful, too.
3 times you said there’s no need for a computer to run 24/7 but the synology NAS is a computer that is dedicated to hosting files to other computers
I recently bought a Synology DS718+ network attached storage unit. My pc and the NAS unit are connected to a gigabit router(i have verified that, both ports are at gigabit speeds) using a CAT6 cable. I'm running two brand new Seagate Iron Wolf 6tb hard drives in RAID0 with the the default 2gb RAM. I have mapped a shared folder on the unit to a drive letter on my windows 10 pc. I have enabled smb file service and set max smb protocol to Smb3 and min smb protocol to smb2. I have disabled transport mode encryption. I have enabled opportunistic locking. I have enabled Smb direct (turn windows features on/off) and disabled smb 1.0 on my windows PC. I still get a max transfer rate of 2 MByte/sec. I haven't been able to able to configure WebDav in router configuration because my router isn't listed in the manual configuration page under external access in DSM. Is WebDav necessary? My link to the router is 1000Mbits/s ethernet which i have verified under network interface in DSM. I was able to get nearly 120MBytes/s by directly dragging and dropping files to and from the file station DSM webpage(it was using http protocol only) before i mapped the network drive on windows. After i mapped the Nas shared folder to a drive on windows, neither using windows explorer nor dragging and dropping files to and from the web page works at the initial speeds. Now i see that CIFS and HTTP protocols are being used under connected users in resource monitor. Before mapping the shared folder in windows, only http was being utilised which yielded nearly a gigabit/s. I still get a max of 2 MByte/s now after mapping the drive in windows and after the CIFS along with HTTP protocol is shown as connection type in connected users in DSM resource monitor. I'm seeing similar speeds(max 2MByte/s) on DS File app on Android.
The lan wifi speeds are 800Mbps, which I have tested on my Android TV and phone. So definitely there's something a miss in the settings which causes it to cap at 16-20Mbps.
@@Dave-bi8se The only thing that would cause this is if you have set a speed limit for SMB in DSM.

great vid. Out of interest why did you move all files into the Plex>library folder? My movies are within the /Movies folder and Plex can still read them. Is this because they've been indexed? Or linked inside the Plex settings?

The Syno FAQ contains general tips, a bunch of "get out of jail" tricks, and other recommendations.
They all have their origins from problems folks have encountered. When we saw a pattern forming, we wrote up the easiest way to fix it.
I did a bit of an overhaul (the fun of draft documents) for the Installation & setup (base of the intro post).

=-If you do NOT see the install page of Plex and get directed in circles follow the steps below-=
Go to settings -> External acess -> shut down QuickAccess.
Reinstall Plex en follow the installation procedure.
After installation you can enable quickAcces and you should be good to go.
After that your installation works fine. Took me 3 months to solve and finally found it.
This happend after the December 2021 update.
It's incredible that Plex has been around for years but I only got onto the bandwagon only recently.
As for the media library itself I store them on external drives in case I want to detach it as and whenever I want to. You might ask, why?
Maybe the paranoid side of me prefer to have the library files detached in case anything happens to the NAS drives.
Just a heads up, Preroll videos do not need to be in a library. You can enter the path for any video file that Plex has access too on the server (e.g. not in a folder only accessible by root).
Hay Brett I setup my Synology DS1019+ just as you did I added just two movies to my Plex library to test out. Everything worked I saw the two movies through my Plex App on my Apple TV so I added several more movies to the library and there not showing up any ideas? And how do you open two file sharing windows in the NAS window mine just opens to a big window when I open another window. first time setting up a Nas...

Hi Brett,
I'm no pro, far from it. But I CAN however, recognize "above and beyond" effort when I see it. And YOU sir have surpassed that by far ! ! Your whole instructional's, how-to's, and tips and tricks and shortcuts were amazing. The lighting for the video was TOP NOTCH. The sound was TOP NOTCH. The transitions and visuals you used to aid your demos and how to's were a pleasure to watch. I even scrolled back a few times when I wanted to see something a bit more in depth because I feel I missed a pieces. I enjoyed this video so much that when I saw this pop up on my YT feed [because I was looking at DS1019+ reviews, then this one popped up], and noticed it was 20m45s in length, I didn't give it a second thought after the first few minutes because I knew there was going to be some great content to soak up here.
My only critique for feedback that I feel is worth mentioning is the delivery speed. At times I felt your mouse, verbal instructions, and screen switching with regard to the Plex stuff was on SSSSSTEROIDS man 😲😲😲😲 That's why I had to go back a few times. Now I know that there probably are some serious techno geeks that are watching this as well that are probably looking at this review then looking at me as if I'm an alien or something. . . . well. . . like I said, it's a minor thing that I felt was worth mentioning since not everyone is a Stephen Hawkings right ? 😏 Especially when everyone learns at a different pace. So like I said, it's minor.
I just bought the DS1019+ today and I'm in the setup stage right now. I started out with 2 Western Digital Red 6TB drives because I know I can always add the other 3 at a later date. Right now I have them running in JBOD. The other 3 spots I will fill with 3 more RED 6TB's later, but I wanted max storage space at the moment. Here are my questions for you;
1. How many drives do you have in your 1019+ right now and what are the storage sizes ?
2. What brand of drives do you use ?
3. What raid array are you running with the drives you have ?
4. How long have you had your 1019+ for ?
5. Can I get by without a PLEX pass ? I know you mentioned something to that effect during the Plex intro, but based on your usage of the PLEX pass, do can you say that you fully use all the extras above what the free version offers ?
6. Are you using the 1019+'s dual gigabit connection in link aggregation ?
Well that's all I have at the present time, but may I ask other questions of you again ? If you're too busy and many other people are regularly asking tons of questions too, I'll understand. At about 4:42 or so, you have a plex folder. I downloaded and installed Plex on my NAS and it didn't create that folder. I created and set up a Movies, TV Shows, and Music Video folder, and my plex on my NAS just isn't seeing anything in those folders for some reason. I pointed the libraries to those specific folders on the NAS, and nothing happened.
At around 3:34 you enable 1TB of shared folder data and mention that setting that limit helps to offset the demand on the NAS. If I have around 11 TB of data on the drives in my NAS, should I set the limit to that amount? What would you recommend?
I've had mixed results using Plex's dvr.However for viewing ripped discs Plex is great much like Kodi.For music i've recently taken to using Plex with Tidal & i love it........works a treat on the Appletv following the latest updates.
Can I stream my media offline without having an internet connection ... through router.
I have my plex server running from a Raspberry Pi 4. You can turn the DLNA option on Plex, allowing to access all your content through your Local Network. It happened to me a few months back, where I had no internet, and was able to watch everything. So yes, you can stream your media offline, as long as you are connected to the same network and the DLNA option on Plex is turned on ;)

A quick security tip: disable the "admin" account and create another one with administrator privileges. If someone tries to hack your device (and there are a lot those that are doing exactly this 24/7) they'll have to guess also, the username to your system.
Can you share the process & software for actually copying the movies from the physical disks to digital copies?
Having issue: is plex supposed to create its own folder? I cannot get plex to successfully scan for files. Its in the right folder but no video files can be found
Thanks for sharing Brett. The only thing I don't understand is why you put all of your content in the Library folder. Why not just use a new share? That way you don't need to change any permissions either.

Brett, considering the hefty price tag for the 1019+, can you recommend one of Synology's other models that's more affordable? I've looked at how many different options they have, and it's hard to tell which one might be my best option.
Second, do you have any recommendations for the types of HDs to put in the bays? Storage capacity? SSD vs standard?
Finally, currently, I've just been running my plex from a standard WD external HD (2TB). Any recommendations on how to transition my Plex account from there to the NAS with the least amount of hassle?
Just curious - why would you want to create this media library when you have Netflix?

hello, so i am a NAS noob and don't fully understand something..
some nas stations i was reading dont have an operating system because they go through home wifi and you can just reach it on any other device.
But if i want to run plex with only nas system i would also like to have plugins like talluli and maybe sonarr once i learn how to use those too.
so to summarize my question
is there a nas that can have your media, plugins, (hopefully a file auto-renaming), and have it all stay on all day and night to run without the need of a pc?
the renamer is not necessary its just a bit of help from the laziness lol
what's the best way to share your plex server with friends/family? I find that having my nas setup with remote access, I keep getting notifications from my network provider that there were attempts of attack from many random IP addresses to my nas server, so I locked up my nas to only local network now, which unfortunately also means I/my friends/family can no longer access Plex outside of my home network, not sure if VPN setup is what I'm supposed to look into?
I have Plex server on my synology NAS but I when I changed my hard drives from 7200 RPM to 5400 RPM and reinstalling everything. I can not setup the plex server on my Synology NAS. Do you know what might be the issues? I am not sure what happened.
What's the point of moving all the files to s self created Plex Folder? There's no need to, in my opinion. I linked Plex (from 8:36) to a "Movies to do" folder on my NAS, to a "Movies Essential" folder on an external HD and to another folder 4K-Movies on two another external HD connected to the NAS (or Media Player, that doesn't matter, it all works just fine).

I just got myself DS220j, but I'm only able to play the media file that I created out of priemier pro. But I'm unable to play the ones that I download of the inherent. I just can't see the downloaded files. Btw I had updated the version of Plex manually. Is there any limitation of video type?
Ok I am seeing up a bad and Plex server and want to get all my DVD's and Blu-ray disks onto a drive so I can stream then to my home. The DVDs aren't a big problem because handbrake is handling most of them with out an issue but my Blu-rays which I have quite a few are a different story. Is there anything you can suggest on backing up my legally level Blu-ray disks to HDD so I can put them on my nas for Plex?

Do you have a video that shows how to take movies copy movies that you own (on either DVD, BlueRay, etc.) onto your hard drives? I couldn't find it.
Late to this video but I have a question. I am upgrading from an existing NAS. Can I simply load in my HDD's already full of data, and it will read these HDD's automatically. Or is there a risk Synology will wipe the drives when I load them?

I got the question for you. If my home networks IP is not 192.168 or 10.xxxx is there anyway for Plex on the Synology to get past the nonsoup for you error. When I look at the logs it treats not 192.168 and 10xxx as non local even though the nas maps it’s IP from the home router. And the ONLY way it works is if I change the IP but my NVR uses the 10 subnet and because it has it own subnet that needs POE it conflicts. So yes. Anyway to get Plex nas to work as my Mac Plex server works just fine as is.
I still don't see what benefits Plex has over DS photo and DS video which are both free, can someone advise me please, cheers Alan

I'm looking to get the Synology 2 Bay NAS DiskStation DS220+ and it comes with 2 GB DDR4 memory. Is that enough for two streams at once? Or should I upgrade to it's max 6GB Memory as soon as I buy it?

Please make a video for using this NAS as
1. Storage server for home office.
2. Map NAS as network drive in all Windows computers in network.
3. Set scheduled, automatic, incremental, and encrypted back up *FROM* NAS *TO* Google Drive. To protect my data from *Ramsomware, fire at my home etc* (while making sure that Google can't read my data).
All my DVDs are stored as .iso files. Will the Plex server recognise and catalogue this file format or will I need to convert them into video files.?
I really like plex but cant managed to get Š work in subtitles try to convert to utf8 using a plugin for auto-convert but nothing semis to work the only option is if I burn subtitles in movie

Plex is the best media server/player that I've come across. Sure, Kodi is fully free with all of it's functions, but it's not as polished. A lifetime Plex pass was way worth the 80€. Been using Plex on my computer(s) since the start.

Sure make more plex videos. Like proper files and how to organize them to tv and movies.
I am considering moving my Plex server from my gaming rig which is always on to a NAS like this so my gaming rig doesn't have to stay on 24/7. I also have a separate box that runs Blue Iris with a handful of cameras recording to that box. However, this Optiplex that is running Blue Iris box has 1TB worth of storage. Would it make sense to devote 1 or 2 bays of a 4-bay NAS to longer-term storage of clips that the Blue Iris machine simply can't hold for long enough? And then use the other bays for the Plex server/media?
Great Video very well done. I have a Synology and was going to use Plex. Due to the fact, i'm not as expert as you are, and this is not working (1515+ Synology), after 2 hours of trial, I decided to not use at least for the next 2-3 years PLEX.

Great tutorial but it does not work (anymore) free play is locked behind a subscription (or at least a paid function) I get a message streaming is not allowed (only 1 minute) unless I unlock this function (€4,99) to bad it will cost me money to use the server.
If I made a mistake somewhere please let me know..

Not sure why you copied the files from the Plex Media Server folder into the Plex folder (after installing Plex), as it seems Plex would allow you to pick files for the libraries from everywhere on the disk. Is that mandatory or just convenience?

How well would that work if you wanted to share you movies and tv shows with family would I share access to the nasd or share in the Plex app. If I am sharing in the Plex app would I need to buy the subscription along with my family
Did you create the user named plex, or was this user created by himself while you installed the Plex App? What is the user-Password from plex?

Great video. One thing I've had trouble understanding. I've heard people talk about putting metadata on a separate SSD drive when using a PC for their Plex server. Is there a way to do this with a Synology NAS? I assume it would eat up a drive bay and not be worth it, thoughts?
