Thank you so much for this review! 12 mins of knowledge and experience from 5 months of use is so much better than the usual “first look review” filled with b roll and not much info!
Very useful review and just what I was looking for yesterday. Since my use-case is different it helps support my decision to get the 50 F1.0. I’m happy to hear that it’s really sharp wide open. Thanks
The reason why I'm buying an F1, is because I'm an environmental portrait photographer. I don't want everything to be sharp, but I want to be able to compose from a distance and still be able to create a separation from the background. Also, at F1, I don't need to carry a large flash during reception part of the wedding. I do use flash during the wedding but I may just use TT350-F
This confirms what I’ve already been feeling. This lens actually weighs a hair more than 16 to 55 mm plus the 35 mm F 1.4 combined. And actually the 56 mm F 1.2, as you say, produces similar results at half the weight size and price. Plus, while I find its usage somewhat limited, for certain photographs the 90 mm F2 is magical, super fast focusing and sharpness, and WR. And the 56 and the 90 mm combined only weigh 100 g more than just the 50 mm F1.0, and give you much more versatility.
Splendid review! I have owned one but got rid of all my fuji gear. Now I want it again since I only shoot very still subjects. Everything you said is spot on. Great work!
I love my 56mm 1.2, and the weight with my XT3. I shoot portraits. I think this lens, while beautiful, is not vastly different enough from the 56 to make me swap it.
With the prices 499 for 56mm f1.2 and 525 for 35mm f 1.4.. i am thinking of getting both. I am ametuer so far but would like to do some shoots here and there of portraits and eventd. I was comparing them to 33mm f 1.4 and this 50mm or 50mm f2. I have an Xt30. Also have 16mm f 1.4 for landscape and 70-300 fornwildlife. I want to get into portraits, street, and night photography. Would you say Im on the right track with 56mm f.2 and 35mm f 1.4? Thanks and great review!
I've bought this lens specially for video purpose. If you want video with smooth bokeh actually you have no choice. For example 56 1.2 isn't usable for video at all due it's continuous focus breathing. 50 f1.0 doesn't have that problem in video and it's quite usable.
Another informative review. I recently moved from a Nikon D850 to the Fujifilm X-T4, as I wanted something easier to lug around whilst traveling. I bought the new 18mm and 33mm f1.4's, and honestly they've easily replaced a baf full of lenses for what I shoot. The only thing I lack is a more portrait focused lens, and had hoped the 50mm would fill that gap, but it looks like there is no real benefit over the 56mm. I also thought about the Sigma 56mm but sample photos just look bland. So looks like the Fujifilm 56mm will have to be the one.
I'm planning to purchase 50mm f 1.0 for half/full body fashion portraits, often in low light environments. However, have doubt between this and 56. Anyone have experience with both lenses??
As I mentioned here, the old 56 and the f/1 aren't really different enough in my opinion. The new 56 outdoes both in every regard except your subjective opinion of what makes a beautiful rendering. That's something only you can decide.
For me the images have a very different feeling. The Nikkor 58mm has a more imperfect feeling that I really like. This lens, while producing some lovely images, has too many other shortcomings for the way that I work.
Would like to hear and see your experiences with the 50mm F2 for portrait and family photography!! I do use the 50mm F2 almost exclusive for short telephotography off woodland and landscape. I do like the details it renders. I want to start with portrait- and familiy photography.
Early impressions are that the new gen bodies considerably improve the AF performance on this lens. Encouraging! I tried the new 56 but it was missing the unique full frame look you get with the 50 f1.
Thanks 🙏 great information, I am very happy with my 56mm and was tossing up should I get the 50mm f1 and will it make a difference to my weddings? I also have the 50mm F2 mainly for fun and street photos but I also found its handy for weddings especially walking shots. So for now I won’t be spending $2,300 Aus dollars. Your video kind of confirmed my thoughts.
Glad it was helpful for you. I've decided to keep the 56mm, as well. It's a great little lens for my uses, but I'd love to see a second version with the modern bells and whistles.
I definitely make use of it when the autofocus is my primary need or when I'll be stopping down a long way and the f/2 max aperture doesn't bother me. A lot of the time, I'm shooting these fast lenses wide open for the rendering they give at those apertures, and when it comes to that, the f/1 or the 56mm f/1.2 just leave the f/2 lens in the dust. It's all about what I'm trying to achieve.
Thanks for sharing. A very good review with some very relevant observations. I actually had the 50mm f1,0 borowed and just did a pregnancy photoshoot with it. My findings are simmilar to yours- I love the focal lenght but the overal package just doesn´t seem to offer enough magic to justify its place in the bag for me. I´m still not quite decided but it looks like I´m gonna keep using my 56mm f1,2 and the 35mm f1,4 instead of this one. If it wasn´t for the whole "Covid" situation I´d just buy it and love it for what it is but with weddings nowhere in sight...I´m not so sure :) All the best to you.
It seems to be a common finding with everyone I've spoken to. This seems to be more of a "look what we can do" rather than "here, have an absolutely amazing tool" from Fujifilm. The 56mm is a phenomenal lens and that's been my choice as well.
The lens feels like I adapt it from a different mount. I have better experience using my sigma 85mm f./1.4 art EF mount with the fringer pro 2 . But I’m keeping it on stand by.
That's cool but i won't ever use the extra small AF point to make such a big focus change, mine is 90% of the time on the smallest of the tracking areas and if needed i us the joystick tap thing to select the single point for better accuracy
We'll see! I did pick it up in our local dealer and couldn't find a reason to place an order. Looking forward to it being on our rental program here so I can actually give it a go in the real world. Watch this space.
I like your video very much thank you. I shoot with both FF and APS-C. Do you feel that this new 50mm F1 still cannot match a 85mm 1.4 on FF when it comes to that buttery smooth bokeh? I used to have the 56 1.2 and that lens just never blew me away, it was just an okay lens. I have never used the 56 1.2 APD version and that lens is still less expensive than this 50 F1. I wonder if I should just give the APD a try. What's your opinion? The only reason why I'm looking into this 50mm F1 is the shorter focal length which I find very attractive because of my shooting style and limited indoor space I just don't like to get really far away from my subject.
I really can't speak to the 85mm as I've never used it. Same goes for the 56mm APD (which I only borrowed on a rental for a couple of days). I'd say try to rent or borrow both lenses and decide which one might suit your work.
56 f1.2 sorry if i missed it in your video - i would like to still do night street photography - would the 56 f1.2 be "fast" enough or better go with the f2 in your opinion?
It really depends on how much light you have and how high you're willing to push your ISO. Anything at f/1.4, f/1.2, or f/1 is the fastest available, so it's about the best you're going to get. :)
@@DylanGoldbyPhotographer using my XT1 - i most of the time let it auto ISO - and let it go up to 6400 haha (auto because some street venders have "good" light and will use less iso naturally) "fastest" i have is the 18mm f2 and adapted OM 50mm f1.8. Do plan to get Viltrox 85mm f1.8 for its a focal length i dont have. Seem better than an aperture upgrade of 1 stop. for a dream set up I know between the prime whether to choose the f1.4 or f2 version but still not sure about the 50mm to pick f2 or f1.2 but not both. That might be the G.A.S. talking haha
Great video. Can you comment on how you sell used gear? People on RUclips seem to be able to immediately unload gear at a whim, where as with a specialty lens like this, I would lose money, it would be a hassle to sell, and probably take a long time. eBays a crap shoot, Craigslist has a limited market, and a KEH type place isn’t give you much.
I lose money. That's the short answer. Haha. We have a lot of local stores here that make trades or sell on commission. It's probably a very different market than where you're based.
Dylan thanks for this review I have decided not to get the 1.0 I rented it and compared it to the 561.2 Just seems like there is more snap in the 1.2 imop.
I spent a little time with it a few weeks back as our local store has them in. While the AF is okay, it's unreliable in my experience and the image quality has too many shortcomings (sharpness wide open, chromatic aberrations) for my use case. Also, since I'll be using it for my client work, I can't afford not to have a service centre around. It's a decent little lens, but simply doesn't fit what I'd need it for.
@@DylanGoldbyPhotographer Hmm. In my experience, I liked it better than my previous Fuji 56mm. The Fuji had more fringing and the AF was unreliable and slow in my experience. Sharpness was comparable too though I really only looked at both lenses at the center sometimes as I just look at the overall image and super sharpness isn't my concern. I do weddings and portraits btw.
@@enshongmiranda Glad you liked it. I've had a great experience with the XF 56mm except for continuous AF, which is where it really needs improvement for my work. I won't give up the excellent images from the XF lens for a little AF speed, though.
Great, calm and very useful and specific review. I have had the 1.2 (ADP??) for a while and never got the itch for this one. But I appreciate the very complete and realistic review you provide
Great video and photos! Thanks for your review, it helped me a lot. I work as a sport and events photographer and I was thinking to buy the 50mm f1.0 but the issues with the autofocus change my standpoint
Glad it was helpful. It's a great lens, but the AF is a bit disappointing. I just tested the new 80mm f/1.7 for GFX and unfortunately found the same thing.
oh damn. I don't know if it's maybe for the size of the sensor. Hard to readout. But in as-c... I was waiting for something good about autofocus around 50mm but nothing happened.
@@AndreaJump It's the coreless motors Fujfilm uses in these lenses. I'm really hoping they'll find ways to design lenses like this with linear or stepping motors. It's a bit sad for such a lens to suffer from AF like this.
@@DylanGoldbyPhotographer yes. I don't know if it's a strategy to maintain low prices. That's the only explanation that came to my mind. But anyway it's a pity cause it makes a bad experience of using, especially for real-life works
Not to view this *fast-fifty* by way of being trite and simplistic but I was waiting, quite literally, for the penny to drop towards the end of the video - $price$ - this is one pricey prime and even though it is a native f1.0 - it is rather expensive compared to the rest of the Fuji lineup. Add the new 56mm mkii into the mix now and this bright show pony is destined to be a unicorn. Rarely seen..for reference, current prices in Australia at full retail pricing. This big fifty is selling for $2399 and the brand new 56mm mkii is $1699. As you said..this is not for everyone, very few I'd say at a guess.
Found one used for 899 and ALMOST bought it. Ultimately, it's too large, too heavy and minimum focus was too long. I wish it was f1.2 or f1.4 and then they could make it a lot more in the spirit of the other lenses. I'm a huge Fujifilm fan, getting into the system in 2012 with the X-Pro1 at 1.0 firmware. Mirrorless appeal was really that I could get 3 cameras and 3 lenses that weighed only a little more than one DLSR and a zoom...
I was honestly in the same boat that you were, and hearing this reaffirmed a lot of what I had been thinking. I had higher hopes for the autofocus of this lens, maybe even naively so, and to hear that it's toe-to-toe with the 56mm rather than surpassing it is sort of disappointing. While the lens is beautiful, I find it to be more of a lateral move from the 56mm rather than an upgrade. Optically, I love the 56mm(and all of its quirks....) and the only thing that would pull me away from it is if the autofocus performance was closer to the 50mm f2. I know that moving that much glass that quickly is highly unlikely though.
Right, I think "lateral" is a good way to look at this lens. I honestly had high hopes because I've seen what can be done in lenses like the XF 50-140mm or the XF 200mm f/2. Granted, they're much larger lenses, but they're doing what really needed to be done for this f/1 lens to work for my bread-and-butter work.
X-t30 is much better in many ways, smaller, more compact, perfect for traveling and street photography has much better grip, bigger viewfinder, more practical because u can change lenses, not fixed lens! Yes it's not weather sealed but got same sensor and processor as 100v. X-t30 is cheaper even if you add two f2 prime lens to the price.

It's a great lens, to be sure. Not for me, but if it suits your workflow, I think you'll have found a good tool.
I have the 35mm (50mm on Fuji) Mitakon f/.095. Nothing but good things to say about this lens, but of course it is manual focus.

Mirrorless appeal was really that I could get 3 cameras and 3 lenses that weighed only a little more than one DLSR and a zoom...
the lens is much too big and unwieldy....putting on the 150 - 600mm

This Fuji project was doomed from the start... AF at f/1 ? Impossible...And not necessary. Bad decisions on Fuji's part...
Haven't seen that amount of focus breathing on a prime... Well, ever. Wow. Useless for video.
Not really aimed at video unless you're shooting static subjects.
Pointless lens
