- How did Apex Legends manage to become the best battle royale esport?
Following the explosive popularity of games like Fortnite and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, many developers tried to break into the battle royale genre with an entry of their own and have managed to find lasting success.
However, what has proved to be an even bigger challenge for many developers has been trying to tap into the competitive potential of the genre and build a lasting esports scene.
Out of all the battle royales on the market today, one title has steadily risen to the top and is now producing some of the highest-quality esports content in the industry. And no, we’re not talking about that game being Apex Legends.
So how did Apex Legends push past the other titans of the battle royale genre and solidify itself as one of the top battle royale esports on the market today?

Something I noticed with games that slowly lose popularity is the difficulty of joining as a newcomer. The player base is full of years of experience and starting fresh is often unrewarding as there are no other new players to fill in with you. It was at its worst with overwatch 2020-2021 & I’m starting to see it more in Apex
The skill gap in Apex is incredibly deceptive because of how strong aim assist is. There are still plenty of really bad players. The difference is that they will still delete you with a perfect spray up close. If there was no aim assist on PC at the very least, then it wouldn't feel so bad for newcomers, to the point that they go "Why is everyone so fucking good!" and quit.
As someone who only started playing at the end of Season 13 I'd say that it's currently still okay as a new player.
The learning curve is definitely kinda steep but we already peaked in P1 in the first split of Season 14. We we're really playing a lot though (~110 hours at that point).
But pubs just weren't playable at all. We got stomped all the time until we switched to ranked where it got a whole lot better. Though it's still frustrating if you're a gold player and die to masters/preds.
Everything is possible if you realise how fun and addicting this game can be.
@@vaunch1 mate controllers exsist in consoles only unless this new comer play in pc with a controlller

Great Video!
Thank you for having me. I know I am not the best pro (popularity and skill wise) but I really want Apex competitive to thrive, regardless if I am playing in it or not. Hope to see more videos focused on the competitive scene and can't wait for what Apex has to offer!
No problem, it was great to be able to interview you for this video!
What hooked me was those tense moments when it feels like everyone's waiting, but its Ring 4, there's no space, and 13 teams are hiding behind a rock
I still find it odd that battle royals have competitive play at all considering their randomness.
As long as Pro Poker is still popular, so too will BR.
One Apex pro put it best, the best teams will able to perform consistently and beat past the randomness. The randomness makes it fun, because any team could have a chance of winning a game here and there. But the best teams will rise to the top.
That’s the reason why apex works so well as an esport because multiple game mechanics have been introduced to counter act such problem, crafters to name such a mechanic
It's very hard to be consistent un a game like apex due to rng. Which makes it even more impressive when pros do if
There is competative uno mate
At the ALGS venue there where 2 separate Rooms/Stadiums each holding 20 teams (40 teams total) and by the last day of the event there where only 20 teams left all in one room, among them there were players who got covid and aren't allowed to play despite the fact that the other room was all ready set up and now completely empty on the last day. imagine making it to the end of a $2million dollar tournament but have to play with a sub or as a duo despite such an obvious solution.
Apex has always had that competitive, "be the best" vibe which has helped it grow into a serious esport but I think it's also making it hard as a game for casual players with games being tryhard, as the game demands it, and less of an enjoyable game you can drop in to chill. This is fine of course but there is a price to pay for being able to drive it into a big esport. The gun play and mechanics are definitely top tier and I hope the rest with maps and legends become better.
Apex and overwatch esports is the good stuff. So cool to watch and analyze. With apex, it's very cool to see different legends make each fight look like a completely different game. Like, there's always that _one_ fuse in a match and everyone in a radius around him is getting blown up by a seemingly never ending stream of grenades. Unfortunately, there's a meta, and metas are _boorrringgg,_ there's so many different legends, different playstyles to master, and everyone picking basically the same 3 legends mucks all that up. I remember Macro made his own tournament where legends are voted out each round and that was _super_ fun to watch.
having more legends with sligthly similar abilities but unique in their own way will remove or reduce meta legend..this season only Valkyrie is almost 100% pickup rate..compare to last previous seasons where almost all 3 legends are the same in each team

apex was such an innovation to br. what other games were lacking, they had it. pings, ability to respawn your teammate to name a few. all the other BRs before apex were so mindlessly boring when you die early and so damn slow paced that youd rather just leave your friends, queue up for another game while you wait for their game to finish.
during the ALGS Finals teams SCARZ lost RPR and 2 people from team Liquid all disconnected with in the first minute of the game starting before anyone had actually died. so instead of immediately restarting the game they decided to straight up ignore them despite players, fans and chat repeatedly asking to restart the game they even silenced the live chat by putting them in emote only mode.
and i thought TOs making players do "rock paper scissors" to decide the match was bad, that's just blatant disregard
Trust me as a team liquid fan i know.
yeah the esport side is shit, they have player who got covid and cannot play at all so the remaining player are play solo or duo, the org of the event is soshit, in valorant if the player got covid but can still play they can play from the isolation room, why ea is so stupid more than riot
I really love your content Akshon! The fact that you ask direct sources makes your content feel so authentic.
an now its shooting itself in the foot like gawd damn respawn

What appeals to me about the Apex Esports scene is how BRUTAL the game is. Unlike your standard 2-team sports formula, TONS of players and teams aren’t getting triumphs during each match. It makes it all the more impressive to see teams that consistently perform well, and especially fun to see when underdogs suddenly find their stride and kick ass after countless losses.
It’s similar to OWL for me in terms of how many teams there are to root for and familiarize myself with, but different in that I get to see 20 of those teams compete at the same time 😂
As an Apex fan... It's only because there is no competition for BR... EA is joke for its Esports scene and the game has so alot of problems
Yeah at this point it's not like it's that great it's just we have no other choice lmao
This is a very true statement
@@brokeangryjerry9605 yep
I'm no EA/Respawn bootlicker, but to be fair Apex today is the cleanest BR for competitive play in terms of gunplay and game progression vs other titles in the market like Warzone, Fortnite, PUBG.
@IncognitoBear, "EA is joke for its Esports scene and the game has so alot of problems"
Alot is two words actually, 'a' 'lot.'
And then you play yourself and either get 7th partied or there is sweaty masters trio in pugs
or you have an octane main who pushes, dies, trash talks, and leaves
thats why we need solos
Although I've never played Apex as competetive or as much as Overwatch or Rocket League, I'm so invested in it because it's is such a good professional game
Just play it for a while and then come back here. Let's see if your opinion will change. I'll be waiting.
@@bountyhunter9457 I have played it for a couple hundred hours, just not the 2000 i've put into rl and ow. I just end up tired of playing against masters and preds with 4k and 20k badges while I've only gotten 3k damage once myself

u guys remember when Snip3down was respawned and killed two by melee, amazing stuff
Apex just brought something new to the br market and that’s mostly thanks to the movement that’s respawn perfected in titanfall
I've played roughly 2K hours of Apex and while the core gameplay is good, there are many issues that make it almost unplayable in a game than hinges on a singular mistake costing you games. Audio, servers, and matchmaking--all broken for roughly a year while devs add random cosmetic schlock. It's a game with potential but it will die as soon as any real competition arrives.
OP said if there a real competitian..the game will die..I agree..but till that new game arrives..all these bugs will not make the game die
Good Video! I have a unrelated question tho... When i first found youre channel i did so because of your overwatch league content, now i get that you made a switch to more popular topics during the times where OW was a "dead" game, but now that OW2 is out and the PLayerbase is there again, do you plan on making more content like that again when the new season starts?
Wait thought his main stuff is fightong game stuff?
We do intend to make more Overwatch content once a replay viewer is available so we can pickup where we left off which compromising quality. The replay viewer tool was a boon for content creation on OW so we’re hoping to see it rolled out (soon) for OW2
@@Akshonesports That's great to hear!
@@boom350ph it is nowadays, but a few years ago they did mostly Overwatch-League content iirc.
Some of the original ALGS streams were really rough. They had to figure out how they were going to stream 60 people. Their original way was just having 1 person from each team share their screen on Discord. It was rough, but they've come a long way.
after overwatch 2 died earlier this year I tried out some Apex and man I fell in love. I missed out on years of this game because iw as really into ow. Glad I made the switch. This game is just simply fun to play
You ought to make a video on Minecraft UHC (Ultra HardCore). It was a Battle Royale before the Genre was even conceived.
Used to watch the pack UHC videos all the time back in the day. Glad someone else remembers
Apex just hits different in my opinion...... If EA would just build a better relationship with the teams and organizations and build a healthier game..... It would be the best eSports game for years in my opinion because apex to other games is chess to checkers.
Apex legends is so cool and awesome video man :]
Apex is one of those games that hooks you instantly. I loved it when I first played. I played it as my main game for well over two years. Now, I can barely spend more than thirty minutes on it. I haven't even played a match within the last month. It's so unenjoyable for me right now because of how horrible the matchmaking is for me. However, I absolutely love watching Apex. I'll have ALGS and popular Apex pros' streams on in the background while working on school, and I'll watch Apex videos for hours on end. It's so enjoyable to watch, but absolutely awful to play.
What about the match making. Long queues?
@@johnnywolf666 no, it's just that because the game perceives me as a much more skilled player than I actually am, I constantly go against sweats and 3-stacks so I always lose. It's very undeniable, but I hear they're doing something to resolve this issue. Then again, it's run by EA, so I have no hope for a fix.

Its along way till he rivals score of esports
Crazy how from the outside looking in Apex is objectively doing really well, but if you are actually in the community you know how much ppl bitch and complain about this game. Some of it is valid tho.
It's the vocal minority that speaks up. But if everyone still plays anyway, then it isn't big enough of a deal. Take Overwatch 2 and its monetization fiasco, but many still play anyway for a reason.
Apex was so addictive to me, it actively made a better FPS player. However I started getting toxic. Realized that i did not enjoy being toxic and quit.
Moved on to other FPS games and have been having a good time. However apex still is probably the best feeling fps I've played
Unfortunately it’s nothing compared to what Titanfall esports could’ve been with a competent publisher.
Indeed
I only play arena on Apex. Like literally 0% BR and 100% Arena. Apex base gameplay is so good even for ppl who don't enjoy BR.
Biggest esport in the world? No I can’t see that but it definitely could be the biggest BR in the world and the only BR I enjoy watching
Yeah I agree. But it's a nice thing to aim for :)
I don't see the issue of controller aim assist being adressed in the video while it is a pretty serious one that is strongly dividing the casual and profesional community.
This a pretty unique case in the FPS world these days, controller is now the dominant device to play Apex on and all of this is due to aim assist reigning suprem in close to mid-range fight which are about half of the game.
In season 3 I was able to drop 6 people a match now I can barely kill anyone. Did I miss something? I did take some breaks in between seasons
Nah bro game is so hard rn me and my friend stopped playing for 2 seasons and now we need to try hard way too much
People just learned since then, honestly. We are at the point where what was considered advanced techs in Season 3 are now considered basic techs.
The matchmaking is cranked up to 10000.
Nah the player base has just become better. Almost everyone that plays is above average to great players, there’s no more average or below average players really. I’m a masters player and playing pubs is almost as hard as playing ranked. Pubs is fun though because it’s challenging and fulfilling when you win
Thanks for the vid
Apex can be frustrating to play and even boring to grind at times, but the competitive scene is just too entertaining.
This makes me wanna play apex again but I know what will happen when I do
What Will happen
The question is: Where the Titans?
I watch algs a lot and i absolutly agree with that.
Can you talk about gears of war eSports and pokemon vgc I really like the editing and videos and I would love to see those come to a reality
I remember when Overwatch League had multiview and then they signed a deal with RUclips. What could have been...
I hope that EA/Respwan keep doing support because the game deserves.
In a year or two from now, you'll be making the video titled: "How EA killed the Best Battle Royale Esport". EA is absolutely shitting the bed with how they're handling Apex. Apex has been hard carried by it's community time and time again but the community has grown sick of the typical EA lies and horrific economy for cosmetics. Streamers like Daltoosh and Lulu, with some of the biggest viewerships, are straight up quitting Apex at it's height because of the shitty community support from EA. Respawn has lost most of it's original staff that created Apex because of EAs leadership. It'll be a sad day when it dies.
I was never interested in Battle Royales. But this game has something other not: gay characters. That's literally the only reason I started playing.
I love the game now and play almost daily
Great VID
Thanks!
It’s not my favorite (anymore) but I definitely think it’s the best competitive battle royale
battle royale esports is such an oxymoron
It's not a lot of competitive br out their rn anyway
I don't play apex oftenly, because i got matched up with unexperienced players as my teammates, and we have to fight against 3 stacks masters and preds. I mean, they should treat new players to feel that they are good in the game, and it will make you hooked up with the game, and escalate that so they will have a better experience and the matcmaking will be balanced. Other than that, it is true that apex is the best BR imho, but i'm just disappointed on how they treat the players and the community now
Yeah i am level 40 and need to play against sweaty wraith and my teammates hate me. I think i will stick to R6 😮💨
Really sad that Apex Mobile is dying so soon....3 months to rank among the best!
Hopefully Respawn or another rookie studio gives us another abilities-based open world battle royale or MMO team-based campaign shooter (tactical or casual) on mobile. 🤞🙏
I know people meme about apex being "dead" now, but in reality it is objectively the best BR out in the market right now bar none.
“All time high” now that’s a geek
Complacency got the best of them and updates have staggered. There’s less content and changes per season making it stale. Great core formula, egregiously mediocre updates and patches
The Speed of this game is just worthy being E-sports however i stopped playing Apex mobile due to that game threat us like we play the game 24/7 just literally getting the legends itself
Awesome video! this is the best commercial for apex mobile, its very subtle and informative, i hope they pay you well
I dont like ea but i love apex legends!
The best battle royale still can't fix the steps audio problem
so much for apex mobile's competitive potential
R.I.P TO THIS GAME
Love me some Falloutt but Bronzey just got dropped from his roster 😢
Please do review "New Remake" Paragon Moba ...
Lmao, Akshon slowly removing itself from OW with the disaster that is OW2
This is also the same game where Vtubers play.
Apex is unique in the BR space because of its movement. It definitely can be better but until there is such BR with the combination of classes and movement, it will be here to stay.
Hyperscape tried but it was either too late or ubisoft didn't execute it well.
Warzone 2 is atrocious, so there's very little competition for FPS battle royales. It doesnt take much to be the "best" in this genre.
I tried, and never really got into Apex Legends. I played TF2, which was nonstop action, but compared to that, Apex was more like non-start action
if compared to real world battle royale is like racing world championship, the competition is to become number 1 per game but point is the most important thing, still nobody want try doing full year tournament only full week traditional style
we need the overwatch vids back man
i smoked weed in that PNC arena parking lot.
sad to see apex mobile is being shutdown tho rip
You guys should check MonsterMasters
They should make lan longer. Why they making 2 lobby that play at same time. And we can't see team pov in second lobby. They all deserve to play at main stage. Not at wigss stream. Also if they add walkout for team that playing before match like valorant, it will be nice. Also ea didn't even care about algs. 0 promtion, 0 support in scrim, 0 effort to maintain competitive(how the hell you crash at lan)
apex mobile has been killed by EA dude, it was announced months ago that at the end of May they will close all the servers and shut down the game
RIP
The loot sucks so bad I dont how this game still succeeds in competitive
The only reason apex is doing well is because the big streamers couldn't kill it fast enough. That's the only reason most of the other battle royals died
they need to release 2 characters a season. one at the start and one in the middle.
no amount of legends or maps or guns would make this game better, in-game rewards and a rank system that actually works is the most basic starting point to make apex an s-tier esport
fuck no, that would just turn it into a balancing nightmare and the devs wouldnt have the time to develop anything other than the legends. how long do you think it takes to develop an entire character, because i guarantee its at least twice as long as you think.
@@_holy__ghost idk I know fighting game characters take a while because of things like frame data model size kit synergy and gimmick. They only take half that into account for hero based shooters so like probably 1-2 months?
@@ExiledSummoner it is absolutely hilarious that u think it takes 1-2 months to make a hero for apex. it takes more than triple that amount. you do realise they have to not only design the look and the abilities, but actually test those abilities extensively? balance the hero? write the lore? record the voicelines? make the skins? fix the bugs??? the entire reason why league is bugged as shit is because they have +150 characters that all interact weirdly with each other. remember how many issues octanes jumppad caused?
respawn (and every other half-competent shooter game) has heroes ready to go over 6 months in advance. MAYBE, if they dropped absolutely ALL development on the rest of the game (no balancing, no new maps, no bugfixing), they could MAYBE get it down to 3 months, and even that's pushing it considering how time sensitive some material is. this is why they work on multiple characters at the same time, because god forbid you have to scrap it and start over without having anything else ready to go as a backup.
i mean this in the nicest way possible, but you really should check out some behind the scenes dev talks to learn how complicated and difficult game development actually is. if you could pump out a new character every 2 months they would do it. its just *literally* impossible.
@@_holy__ghost yea thats alot to read so ima just assume I missed some things when speculating
The title makes apex look good but nobody playing frequently enjoys the game. And they can pay for these tournaments but not fix the game itself

it totally is not esports ready as the new drama with end circles shows once again

Is it just me or BR tournaments(in any BR) in general are not interesting to watch?
Yeah it's a lot of waiting until the final ring then players are forced to fight. Valorant while a worse game is way more fun to watch

I never enjoyed watching competitive apex. You watch all the teams play like cowards for 90% of the game time, then the last 5 mins everyone throws themselves at each other and it's impossible to keep up with what all the teams are doing if you're watching the stream. If you spectate your fav team then you miss out on all the other action going on everywhere. I actually laughed out loud when that guy said "after a few mins of you scrolling through your phone" that's pathetic if those are your standards imo. Apex just wasn't designed for to be played like this and that's not a bad thing.
Let's Goooooooooooooo
I still can't understand why battle royale game devs allow different input devices to compete against each other. The only game where this makes some sense is rocket league. Cod, halo (kinda), overwatch, csgo, rainbow, valorant all get it. Why can't battle royale games?
right...at a player base of less than 70k right now I'm sure this is the most successful Battle Royale in 2022, bro was this video written in 2020 and jut now uploaded...like what?
What are you talking about? There are like 400,000 people who play Apex on Steam every single day. Plus millions more on all the consoles and mobile. There are a lot of people who play Apex still.
i hope respawn are embezzling apexbucks into titanfall 3. i Hate battle royales but i want respawn to succeed
Respawn Devs have said that they are not doing a titanfall 3. Plus they have Jedi Fallen Order which made them a ton of money, they’ll be fine

Don’t get me wrong Titanfall 2 is the best shooter I’ve ever played but it’s not happening for probably another 5-10 years if it even comes out. EA wants Respawn to focus on Apex and Star Wars
The game as just the battle royale is really good but everything else around it isn't as great (at least not at the moment)
