    Hey Jose it's cool that you went to the dunes most people don't take their trucks to the dunes and just do trails or rock crawling instead. Some tips for the dunes obviously air down but also you can remove your spare tire for weight it's easily 60 to 90 pounds it will help alot with the rear suspension. You can also remove your hood that's another 40 to 60 pounds it will allow the engine to run WAY cooler and also its been dyno proven with heat soak you lose about 40hp. You can leave that stuff back at camp or put it back on at the end of the trip. I say good idea and run a metal bumper preferably aluminum for weight. Also street tires work the best in the sand and a AT tire will out perform MT in the sand. If you want to go super low on tire pressure but worried about breaking the bead just carry some starter fluid you can easily re set the bead. Like Car Care Nut says "less is more" especially in the dunes!

  • @coloradoboo1071

    Good tip on using a zip-tie for that spare tire chain. Another tip to help hear car noises is to drive behind a big, brick building which helps reflect noises back. (I drive behind our local Kohl’s building.)

    The rubbing noise when in reverse could also be the fender liner. If the front is catching, that would explain why it only happens when in reverse. After seeing the fender liner was zip tied, I’m willing to bet that’s what it is. Keep up the great videos!

  • @TianarTruegard
    @TianarTruegard Год назад +4

    I live in Michigan, and I've been to the Silver Lake sand dunes many times. In a lot of spots its very risky to go fast as the wash board like formations of sand will send you bouncing around hard and then stuff like that can happen to your vehicle. Its always best to drive around slow first to get an idea of what the terrain is like before you try it any faster.
    If Jose plans to continue doing off-roading, a good skid plate in the front might help protect against further damage, especially with the condenser right there.
    I do remember one time going over the peak of a tall dune and getting high centered on the peak when we made the mistake of stopping at the wrong time. The vehicle came down on the frame rails and we were stuck. Always bring a good tow strap along and have a hitch or tow hook installed on your vehicle so you can have someone help you get unstuck.

  • @Builtitlikelegos
    @Builtitlikelegos Год назад +55

    Jose , since your looking to do some more serious off roading and using this truck as it was intended, definitely get the front steel bumper at the minimum . You increase your approach angles and reinforce the front end . If you go with a aluminum front bumper from maybe RCI for example you may not even have to replace your front springs to slightly stiffer ones to account for that added weight. Don't raise the vehicle, although it would be very cool ! Lol. Look Into appropriate tires for your use case as well. Falken wild peaks and Bridgestone k02 are a very popular choices and for good reason. They don't sacrifice too much ride quality and economy but offer fantastic off road performance.. assuming your off roading advances and you start ripping off the running boards and Rear bumper just replace them with rock sliders and higher aluminum rear bumper accordingly. That's just me 😂 oh and if you know your taking this vehicle overlanding definitely install skid plates underneath to protect the trans and gas tank

    • @ravenfeather7087
      @ravenfeather7087 Год назад +2

      I put a set of Falken Wild Peaks on my Taco and then after 25K miles had to put another set of 4 on. 2 of them were just about at the point where it would have been illegal to run them because of tread depth. Partly my fault because I unintentionally ran them over the recommended air pressure and as a result the middle of the tires wore. But even before I put them on I thought it looked like there was a lot of space between the lugs of the tread (lot of area where the tires/rubber was not hitting the road). I was not impressed with their longevity. Great traction but I'll not buy them again.
      Personally, I think anyone who takes a well built Toyota off-roading has a screw loose and too much money. And someone who makes "mods" to a Toyota truck just to do that has even more screws loose. Toyota builds the most durable well engineered trucks on the planet and then people make mods to be cool and their performance, efficiency and durability suffers. I think that's irresponsible and a waste of resources. Both natural and financial resources.

      @@ravenfeather7087 That's not really been my experience, they come with a 55k warranty too so if they were out after 25k you should have gotten them warrantied. Overinflation can make a major difference on wear though as well as a bad alignment. As far as space between lugs, you want to have that in an offroad tire, it allows the lugs to grip and also helps in ejecting mud and rocks.

  • @ChrisJDee
    @ChrisJDee Год назад +2

    I offroad my GX, it's hard to be a car care nut and offroad as you will constantly damage things no matter what unless you are only on very easy trails. Not to say that I don't take care of it, but perfection is a tough goal when you go offroad. The GX is a great platform, however, the front bumper hangs very low so it will get caught on things, rip off, etc. If he would like to continue offroading, consider all terrain tires, and a front metal bumper would be nice, but then he would also likely need to upgrade the suspension as it will have nose dive and sag some due to the weight on factory suspension. I bought an aftermarket steel front skid plate to protect the important things and I've cut my front bumper which has been helpful for more clearance. Additionally, replacing the low hanging running boards with rock sliders is a good idea if he wants to do moderate trails.
    As you can see, this is definitely a rabbit hole, but at its heart, this is a Land Cruiser with a lot of make up on it. It has a lot of fancy plastic which will get beat up off road.

I can relate of your experience, I was working on a project out of state several years ago, and I was driving a brand new Challenger with less then 1k miles. One day while I was driving to a location I took a “shortcut” that put me in the middle of a mud pit. We were able to get out but the car changed color from white to brown. I had to drive to a car wash and took us over 3 hours and a lot of $$$$ to remove all the mud from all the crevices of the car. So on my side lesson learned no off road in expensive vehicles 🤣

    CRESSIDA!
    2010-2013 GXs didn't have all that cosmetic garbage the newer ones had with the giant goofy plastic diapers. If it were my truck, the least I would do is leave it as it sits in the video and keep hacking plastic off as it interferes with the GXs offroad performance. The most i would do is convert the front clip to a Prado which is for sale in the USA and or install a real metal bumper.
    The amount of protection, utility and the piece of mind I've gotten out of both steel bumpers I've had on my FJ is way worth it. From proper offroad protection of the vitals to the sheer utility of steel bumpers, its way worth the loss in MPG. It also looks bad ass pulling up into the mall parking lot with what looks like a military vehicle.
    Then again, my FJ is strictly an adventure rig I depend on for being reliable in absolutely remote and rugged areas. I cant be bothered by silly splash guards and dorky metal brackets that hold goofy plastic skirts on whats pretty much a farm truck underneath it all. I've got a LS and GS for daily driving.

    I'm surprised he did any off road activity without the skid plate for underbelly protection. I got mine on my 2021 Tacoma TRD Off Road and it saved me twice.

    Keep the GX videos coming. I bet the GX community is really excited that Joseph car will be part of videos. GX is a beautiful machine. Next let's talk about the Coolant Valley Plate leak. A full job video will be so much appreciated.
