Would You Trust a Mobile RV Mechanic in a Strange Town?

  • In this video we continue our journey north to Canada in our Beaver Motorhome. Our travels take us from a beautiful BLM campground on the lower Colorado River through Parker and Lake Havasu, Arizona to Barstow, California in the Mojave Desert. Along the way we are stranded by a mechanical problem and battered by high winds, but we manage to find free overnight camping in the most most unlikely places and have lots of laughs.

      We did make it home, now safely back on Vancouver Island. A couple more videos to come to close off that travelling season, working on them now. We had a great trip home, thanks. I chatted with the mechanic earlier this week, sent him the video. Really good guy. Bye for now, thanks for being with us.

      @@miketomas8564 okay, you asked. I’m a retired heavy equipment mechanic. I have done lots of brake work on trucks. Either full air brakes or hydraulic brakes. I have worked on equipment that has air over hydraulic brakes ( not a good system ). I have read that the Monterey has “ air over hydraulic brakes “.
      Reading that pretty much put this model off the table.
      All the information I find is confusing as to how this system works.
      So far I have read there is an air cylinder that is assisting the pedal push on the master cylinder (???).
      I have seen pictures posted of a proper Haldex air over hydraulic master cylinder ( system I am more used to ). And a bunch of other ideas but can’t seem to find any consensus on the actual system.
      Thanks.

      Hi, this is Bill again. I too am interested in knowing how this system works - because I have never comprehended our braking system on our 1997 Beaver Monterey. While the parking brake is air controlled, I was under the impression the service brakes were hydraulic, not air over hydraulic. I'll stay tuned to see what pops up. Thanks.

    When we were traveling with a big Fifth Wheel pulled by a Ram diesel it took a while until my wife knew what the gauges should say. But she eventually was able to warn me if something didn't look right. Especially when I was 110% focused on the road and people that didn't respect our size, we loved spending a winter in Quartzsite I just dread going through places like Phoenix, the nerves were usually frazzled after making it through. We had to get back to Michigan going north to fast early ment snow and ice so we would go east stay low till we got through the Texas panhandle.

      I bet that was a big rig. Sounds like your wife and Micheila would get along well, watching things for the two of us. We as well dislike going through Phoenix, we try to miss it by taking a southern route, slower highway but less stressful. We've never driven the route you're describing back home to Michigan, but would like to one day soon. Glad you made it safely home. Thanks for watching and for sharing your story.

    Well, Micheila and Bill, I'm glad Jane and I know you already made it home safely, or we would be worried that you were still having more adverse adventures in the wilds of America. It's always something, isn't it? (I estimate that, branch-wise, we are about 5% through the 35 acres. A condo in San Carlos sounds better and better.) Lee

Oh dear, 5% doesn't sound like much progress, but I'm sure you'll get there. Great way to keep in shape, I'm sure. A condo in San Carlos, humm.... that sounds like a very good idea! Talk again soon I hope, all the best.

    A should have travel list to carry for your rv 1 new alternator, 1new starter yours is at the age a good used engine computer, oil filters, transmission filters, fuel filters, and oil for all fluids. Just my 2 cents.

    • @ThisOldRV2023
      @ThisOldRV2023  4 месяца назад +1

      Really good points, thank you. You're right, our motorhome is at an age where things are bound to fail. I do carry some items, but nothing as extensive as you're suggesting. Thanks for mentioning these specific things. When you say a good used engine computer, are you meaning a CAT specific computer that reads the engine codes? I thought only CAT certified mechanics have access to these - where they plug in to a receptacle in the engine filter bay. Thanks again.

    • @trentonjohnson2948
      @trentonjohnson2948 4 месяца назад

      @ThisOldRV2023 no a used engine computer ecu if yours has one when they go it can be very very very expensive to find and ship it. Can put your rig out for weeks or longer. Also look into a fass fuel system your engine will thank you for it.

    • @ThisOldRV2023
      @ThisOldRV2023  4 месяца назад +1

      Oh dear, that says it all. Our motorhome, being only 30 feet, has a short wheelbase and tends to have a somewhat choppy ride under normal highway conditions, so highway 40 almost did us in. Thanks for the tip, I think we'll be avoiding this route in the future. Really appreciate you watching, thanks!

    You were just recommended to me today. So hubby and I watched several videos in a row. We both laughed when you said, “You can watch your dog run away for a week”. I subscribed. I was just wondering, are you full time RV’ers, or do you have a home base up in Canada?

    • @ThisOldRV2023
      @ThisOldRV2023  4 месяца назад +2

      Oh that's funny, glad you liked that Saskatchewan Province remark. I like it too. And we're happy you found us, hope you stay. We're not full time RV'ers. We have a home base in Sidney, on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. It's a little seaside town about 30 minutes from Victoria, the capital of British Columbia. We usually spend half the year in our motorhome, travelling back and forth to Mexico, where we owned a home for 12 years. We sold the home in Mexico last year, so we're devoting more time now to travelling in our motorhome, Monty. Our fall and winters in British Columbia, on the coast, can be wet and grey. Southern USA and Mexico keep us from going crazy! Bye for now.

    Always wonder why the RV people don't just park and wait the wind out?

    • @ThisOldRV2023
      @ThisOldRV2023  24 дня назад +1

      It's a really good point and easy to do. It's much like having a boat and remaining at anchor or staying at the dock until the weather improves. Why risk it? My wife and I need to be more aware of this when we travel, because we have been caught in unpleasant and unsafe driving conditions on the interstate highways due to winds - and they're usually well forecasted ahead of time. We're very careful on our sailboat, so why not when in an RV, right? Thanks for the reminder!

  • @miketomas8564

    So- as far as a dead alternator, You CAN run the Generator while driving. That will charge your house and chassis batteries while your driving to a destination to get the Alternator fixed. Also; You look HOT. Why don't you run your Generator and your roof AC units while you drive? That's what we Arizonans do in our Patriot THUNDER. 11:33 No.. It's not true.

    • @ThisOldRV2023
      @ThisOldRV2023  4 месяца назад

      It's a great thought, thank you, and it would sure make a desperate situation not so concerning if we knew we could travel to a more suitable location or shop. And you're right, we were hot! My hesitation in doing this is our propane generator. We always make a point of driving with our propane tank turned off, fearing what could happen in an accident if driving with an active propane line, especially the liquid line to the generator. Am I worrying too much? Oh, and thanks for answering my question about California and Arizona and the road condition. It was just an immediate, uneducated thought and I probably shouldn't have suggested it. Really appreciate you watching and commenting, thank you!

      @@ThisOldRV2023 As soon as you realize your alternator is failing you need to start your generator. Having a set of jumper cables will allow you to tie your batteries together enough to safely get some ware to make repairs. I have had to do this on several motorhomes. And it has saved me 1000s Having a voltage tester fuel filters and all the belts for your coach will also save you.

    • @ThisOldRV2023
      @ThisOldRV2023  4 месяца назад +1

      Thanks for the tips, meaningful stuff that I appreciate. I had never thought of using the generator as a lifeline until something better comes along. And while I carry a voltage tester, I don't carry extra fuel filters and belts - but I will. Thanks!
