    Wow, i sleep a lot, dream a lot and feel absolutely awful in the morning. Getting up the bed is so hard. going go bed is hard too. I hate it so much when everybody else seems to have it so easy and complain about my difficulty to sleep at normal times.

      Have things improved at all?

    • @YugeYun
      @YugeYun 9 лет назад +31

      +SiLatics56 Thanks for asking. I'm happy to say that yes things have improved. I moved out of my parents place to live with my friends which had a positive effect on my mental health. Furthermore I got a job and got motivated to really learn to go to bed early. I've always struggled with this, but somehow it worked this time. I guess mostly because we are all working and waking up early, so our household gets quiet at 9 pm. Also when there's no homework anymore, I don't feel so stressed in the evening. It's also basic things that I've started to do in the evening. Whenever I feel stressed I spend a day without computer doing something I like. Go jogging and to sauna, read a book, draw, knit, bake etc. Really basic stuff but it seems to relax the brain in different way than computer. It seems that when I go to bed at 10 pm, I'm always much more refreshed the next day that going at 3 pm, regardless of sleeping the same amount of hours. I guess I'm starting to believe that the body is made for maintaining normal rhythm. It's hard to explain what changed since people always told me these things, but I couldn't do it. I still dream a lot (although a less than before) and when I have stressful periods at work, sometimes I struggle to fall asleep. Then I might take a sleeping pill. But I guess mostly my life is a bit less stressful right now and therefore my mental health is in better condition.. so sleeping is easier too.

I've been having them for since childhood lmao and it makes sense now, i've been embarrassed to tell people because I don't feel like finding love is something acceptable to strive for, but I guess it's most likely a big chunk of how I can help myself since i don't help myself at all atm

    ever since i was a teen i used sleep as a coping mechanism for my depression. in high school, id come home, do homework, then sleep from 4:30/5:00 pm to 5:45 am rinse and repeat. im addicted to sleep. i revolve my days around sleep. if people try to make plans with me before 4 pm, i tell them im busy. 4 pm is like 8 am to me.
    now almost a decade later, i have chronic fatigue and its been a struggle for many years. i feel like i cant function for more than a few hours after waking up, if even that much. i sleep 9-12 or more hours, then nap during the day. my sleep is primarily dreaming. and my dreams are super intense, very detailed. ive always noticed i dream and remember dreams way more than everyone else, but i never associated it with my depression. but it makes a lot of sense.
    ive never had it explained to me this way. i want to try to fight this and create a healthier sleep cycle for myself. thank you.

      Yup! For me, there's some link to sinus infections - either they trigger or ARE triggered - somehow connected. The first signs are when the 4 hour sleep cycles start - I wake up in a BLINK at almost exactly 4 hours. I can stay in bed for 2 or 3 hours and get back to sleep for another 4... but it's miserable after that, and starts a 2 week chain, usually ending in a sinus infection. The excessive REM sleep (and remembering the dreams) is a constant for me, but during this cycle, they are more chaotic and detailed (visually rich textures, smells, even touch sensations). This happens about 4-5 times a year. Worth mentioning, I seem to have a 25 hour day cycle - pretty consistently.

Resigned from my job and of Feb..then Covid. First few weeks, month..was okay enough,..but now that I've stopped, I'm dead in my tracks. Dread going to sleep cuz the dreams are sssoooo frikken emotional, downright awful and sad..lol, but hate getting up, 0 motivation and drained emotionally and physically from the gut wrenching dreams. I might have to look into this further. CBT (for me) was almost a complete waste of time. I dream a hell of a lot and my dreams are absolutely crazy, and I mean CRAZY! Just the weirdest stuff happening, often mirroring events and things that have happened to me in the past, but nearly always with added surrealism thrown in for good measure. I am often the victim of violence in dreams but I mostly fight back, or people I know are the victims of violence. I often dream of world disasters, terrorist attacks and so on. It all makes me pretty fucked up and often very tired and down in my waking life.

    I was depressed through most of my teenage years well into my twenties and my dreams, which have always been vivid and intense, were of a different nature than now. I used to always have dreams where I'd be trying to get away from things but couldn't run fast, like my limbs weighed tons. Or I'd be trying to defend myself in a fight but couldn't seem to throw a punch with any force. I also had terrible bear dreams where I'd be trying to run and hide while hearing people getting mauled viscously. I can't pin point when my dreams changed, but it happened within the same time frame as my depression began lifting. It's crazy because I no longer run from shit in my dreams. I'm now the aggressor. My dreams are just as vivid and intense as ever, but now, I often wake up, afraid to tell people the shit I dreamt about, due to the disturbing, evil nature of the dreams. (You have no idea) So, I knew there had to be some connection.

    I have bipolar II. My sleep is AWFUL. I am tired 24/7. Every blue moon I receive a burst of energy/ happiness. But most of the time I live in the realm of melancholy. I wake up sleepy and tired. My dreams are like movies. Sometimes I feel as though I can smell and taste things. I don’t have many nightmares but my dreams can be so intense. Once I had a dream my daughter died. I was wrecked with so much grief in my dream I started crying in the waken world and my husband had to wake me up. It seems like a never ending struggle for good sleep and being able to wake up feeling refreshed. Even now I just woke up from a nap and I feel awful. I am so sleepy and drained. Some people say it’s diet issues. Trust id rather give up food than feel like this everyday.

    spanishaustralian - you're right but what you say doesn't contradict this video. If you're in bad physical health for any reason you'll be worried about it as your physical needs will not be being met. This will set off the worrying circuit, too much dreaming etc which will help maintain the depression. Of course if you treat these problems depression will lift, but depression isn't a disease caused by them, it's a symptom!

    I think its a two way road, the depressing thoughts, behaviors, beliefs, etc. over time build up and your brain can no longer flush out these emotional arousals with normal REM sleep, so it goes into overdrive, and this is exhausting. It then becomes a vicious cycle as it has for me: I wake up miserable and thus spend alot of my day doing little but ruminating and feeling terrible, building up more for my brain to flush out in the coming nights, and so on.

    I think a lot of depression comes from when people have bad relationships. If you are depressed over your parents or family, move out and limit your contact with them (or make plans to and organize your finances if you are too young). Be positive and uplifting (even if you have to fake it) and make some nice friends. Nice people stay away from depressed people so if you are sad and negative you will never meet nice people to be good, uplifting friends, which is what causes a lot of depression.

    @casio124478 thanks for your comment. This video isn't saying that REM sleep isn't important, indeed you are exactly right - getting enough REM sleep is utterly vital to our sanity and survival. What this video is saying is that: - the high brain activity of REM (when dearousing emotion), when too much of it occurs, can contribute to feelings of exhaustion and lack of motivation that can lead to a cycle of depression. A certain amount of REM is needed, but too much can be as bad as too little.

    Being highly anxious/hyperaroused and being depressed are not the same..yet it's interesting how either will lead to entering REM-stage sleep faster and longer! Also strange how when one is hot, either due to sickness/flu, or externally from a hot bed, dreams also increase!
    There was a great HumanOs episode with Jennifer Goldschmied, where they discuss how sleep-deprivation, possibly just SLOW-WAVE NREM (not REM) sleep deprivation, seems to help mood and act as an antidepressant. They suggest waking-theta increases the longer you're awake and gets reset after slow-wave sleep, but if the slow-wave sleep is not working properly, then disrupting it you feel better!

    I know for decades I have sleep issues but I know I do sleep, maybe 6 to 8 hours, once I cross that threshold - so then why ...why do I feel so exhausted when i wake. For the last month, I actually thought during the day (I can't function, work (I do but it is HARD) am I lazy? Then it dawned on me that no I am not, those intense dreams, feel like real, actual physical work, so in effect, I have done my 8 hours work, exhausted myself in my sleep. Knowing this and seeing this video that confirms it. (whilst not productive, real things must be done) at least I do not berate myself for being lazy anymore and this explains while during the day I can sit and stare at computer or out the window as if in a strange day sleep and that upside down World is where I get some form of rest that sleep deprives me of.

    • @allonifrah3465
      @allonifrah3465 5 лет назад

      Yes. Depersonalization and derealization.
      Derealization is when you dissociate from the world around you so much that it feels like you're in an empty room, looking out of a window and seeing the world outside, strongly feeling like you're not there. You dance, you laugh, you eat, you talk, you walk...but it's more like watching a movie and seeing someone else do all these things while you are very distant from it all. You don't feel present in your own experiences. It all just feels unreal. Movie like. Detatched from yourself.
      I've been having both depersonalization and derealization. Derealization most of all.

    • @xavierfragoso736

I still have depression for 9 months but no derealization. I guess everyone is different but your derealization could be caused by something other than depression based off my experience.

    Good night sleeps requires a good bed,maybe a Tempurpedic,if not then a Sealy Mattress will work great too.Anything sleep over 8 hours will tire the body and make your feel worse,it's depression to sleep more than 7 or 8 hours.If you don't dream anymore,or have insomnia,Cannabis will fix the dream and insomnia problem.Too much Cannabis will make you sleep too much also,or wake up feeling brain fog,like you just woke from a Coma.If you sleep for 6 hours straight then wake up,get up,don't go back to sleep,it will make things worse.I'm no expert,I'm only speaking from my own experience.

      I have heard cannabis stops dreaming. Interesting. I don't dream at first when I dab before I sleep but I will dream later in the evening like last night. Wil have to keep doing this to see if I feel more restful. I did go back to sleep after waking though. Not sure how I feel. No super energetic. I dream constantly and vividly. It is exhausting. Taking something called Prazocin I think aka minipress. So far it doesn't keep me from dreaming.

      Dreams help the healthy and hopeful, and torture the depressed.
      If you have unmet needs in your life, your subconscious will torture you both when you're awake and when you're sleeping. Your dreams will integrate your frustrations into your psyche.
      There is truly no rest for the weary. The world rewards those who have everything and keeps taking from those with so little.

    So true, the only way i used to be able to get a good nights rest was either through knocking back a bottle of wine or smoking a bong. If your feeling depressed it also helps if you starve yourself of sleep for one night during the week and waking up at about 2am and going for a jog or something, it basically disrupts your usual biological processes and sends your energy levels into hyperdrive. The two together don't work unfortunately.

    I moved out of my hometown in with my bf to a new town. I cant find a job and I quit everything else in my old home town. left a lot behind. having no job and nothing to do all day weighs on you. The last couple of nights I've been dreaming more than I ever have. My dreams have been more intense. This morning I woke my bf up by punching the wall in my sleep, I've been talking in my sleep and I've been depressed. What this dude just said made everything make so much more sense and also solidified what I thought was causing all this fatigue and lack of motivation.

    I haven’t looked any further into this than this video but I’m thinking just set an alarm every 90 minutes so that you don’t fall into REM sleep.... and you’ll get a bunch of restorative sleep minus the draining dreams!
