You get more trophies if you opponent has more trophies than you. And sometimes if you need below 41 trophies to reach new arena then it matches you against a player who is already reached to that areana and if you beat them then you get the exact same amount of trophies that you needed to reach new arena. It happened with me when I was 40 trophies away from 9000 and got matched against a player who was already at 9000 and I beat him and got 40 trophies
