I Made a Tiny Snail Aquarium 500 Days Ago. How Is It?

- It's been a year and half or 500 days specifically since I made the "DIY Micro All-In-One Snail Aquarium." A lot has happened since then and I wanted to circle back on this setup to see how it's doing today. Nano setups in general are more challenging for a number of reasons: plants fill in faster, they're cumbersome to maintain, and conditions are generally more unstable. All of that in mind, how did this setup fare all this time later?

Sorry for skipping last week, but as I said in the community tab, I completely lost my voice and only now is it starting to come back. A sinus infection brought on by allergy season beat me up! Anyway, I wanted to take a proper and updated look at the DIY Micro All-In-One Snail Aquarium in this week’s video. I still haven’t put it in its rightful place in my office yet and I figured now was a good time because it’s been exactly 500 days since I built it. What do you think of its progress thus far? Let me know and have a great weekend SerpaSquad!
No worries! Can't wait to see the new video!
Take your time ❤
What happened to your 350 gallon tank that broke during shipping ?Did you fixed it or are you going to make a video fixing it ?
use ceramic coating on the glass, plastic or any tank, tank will not get scratch and won't get dirty for a long long time
hope your voice is better
I really appreciate these long term followup videos. It's useful to see how these setups evolve over time.
agree!
Same! I want to set up a tank that’s built to last so it’s nice to see what works long term.
Wow, I didn’t even realize it had been over a year since I watched that video come out! Thank you for all your hard work and creativity in that time!
Same I remember loving that video when I first watched it ❤
Your videos are literally therapy to me. Anytime I am having a panic attack or anxiety attack I immediately reach for my phone and pull up one of your videos. Its a combination of the calmness in your voice, the beautiful filming/editing, and pulling attention to little details (similar to the 54321 technique) your videos never fail to pull me out of the deep end. Thank you Tanner!
I’m exactly the same ❤
If you are having a bad panic attack and it's a bad one, a all cold shower works very good. Basically puts you in shock and puts you into survival mode/ pushing panic away as there's more important things to focus on.

As an ecosphere enthusiast I really enjoy nano builds like these. Further, I love update videos on old builds! This video really scratched an itch!
Bladder snails are the bane of my fishkeeping existence. The fact you are keeping them as pets has actually made me think I need a micro tank like this to keep them all!!!
The #1 reason anyone ends up with snail over population is because they are over feeding their tank. Stop feeding the snails and they won't over populate. Just feed the fish.....
Add a betta, it will eat the smaller ones.
@@sendmorerum8241 Mine sometimes does, but spits them out more often than not lol. I heard it's only le French bettas that eat snails ;)
@@maxavery9963 Now that you say, mine was better at controlling the shrimp population than the snails...
Makes me feel like a horrible person because I just smash them and let my fish pick at them
The nano tank looks good for 500 days without maintenance.
Lol right and he says it requires "more maintenance"... I mean .. I suppose once a year for a nano tank is super hard
Bladder snails are pretty good at keeping things clean from my experience.
I put some in a small pot of Lucky Bamboo filled with pebbles and water after it started to have some gross growth. The snails cleaned everything under the water and have kept it clean since with no maintenance except adding water.
Do you have a discord???
@@stixorz he said why
Probably just tops off with water from other tanks. With just barely enough light to grow. And no extra ferts(95% of us over do the lighting, including myself)
This little tank inspired me to build my first aquarium, which basically was a scaled up version of this one (10 gallon). It had the three compartments and all that, it was pretty cool but the actual water volume area was small so I ended up dismantling it so I can keep fish. Thank you for the update on this little tank, keep up the great work!
Have you considered simply posting updates on your builds when you're working on larger projects? For example, instead of feeling pressured to finish a build by Saturday morning, if you need another week on it, simply have periodical updates.
Videos like these ones are not only highly enjoyable, but they also help a lot with learning about how to take care of various critters. I'd be very interested in how the saltwater tank is doing, even if nothing much has changed since you got it - on the contrary, it would be quite helpful to other folks to see how slow the progress on some of these mini-ecosystems is, to normalize the fact that you don't magically get a mature tank out of the box, that corals need time to open/grow, that shrimp don't just start spawning 24/7, etc.
I agree heavily!!
The fact that the pump fit perfectly was a sign that it was meant to be! And love to see aquatic snails, they were always my favorite part of our aquarium growing up
I'm so grateful I found your channel. With everything in the outside world and my personal life is trying to bring me down you channel provides a solid boost of fell good serotonin. It cool to see how this micro build turned out!!!
i'm glad youre feeling better! beautiful work as always. I still love the hardscape for this one, the flow of roots is amazing
wow, this snail aquarium was the first video i ever watched of yours because i was bored of studying and just clicked on a random video.. little did i know id become hooked on this channel and i have been watching ever since!!
I really appreciate how you always link the original videos in the description so I can get a reminder of how it was out together before I watch the updates
This is one of my favorite builds you have ever done- I’m so happy it’s doing well! It makes me want to make some creative bioactive tanks for all of my bazillions of mystery snails. 😅
I've had my snails in a perspex column (d=15cm, 35cm high) since 2019. Along with the amphipods who hop around the bottom and various creatures who hichhike on vegetation updates, my snails are more interesting than I would have expected before I put their aquarium together. I love them.
What a nostalgic video, this was the build that got me into the aquarium hobby! 😭😭😭
That's incredible how 500 days have passed. This was one of the my favorite builds you have ever done
Thank you for doing a follow up on this. It's always been one of my favourites.
Your micro builds have always been some of my favorites, along with your builds in unusual containers. They’re excellent mini ecosystems and works of art
This was my favorite of your builds, in fact I've probably rewatched it more than any of your other videos! Glad to see it doing well!
Glad you're recovering your voice and feeling better, Tanner. So the snails just kept chugging along, doing what snails do, and the odd little container turned out to need remarkably little maintenance. After 500 days, just clean the filter, scrape the algae, and tidy up the plants. I'd say you did a good job to begin with!
My day is instantly better now that there’s a post! Thanks tanner!
I watched this video when it came out. I had no idea it had been over a year since it was made! I'm so glad to see it established just like a long lost friend. :)
The clip at 3:39 is so freaking cute!!! U can see his lil snail face 🥹😭
this is amazing the first ever video of yours i watched was the micro snail aquarium and this brought a wave of nostalgia over me😊
I've just dunked some snails in a coffee jar for now. All I had was some Eco-Complete and some moss.
They are somehow surviving, but it's temporary until I can get around to something better, even if still low tech.
Your projects are so inspiring.
I can’t believe it held up that well😮
This original build was my first video of your's I watched. Its so cool to see an update! ❤
This was one of my favorite little builds you have done! I'm so happy we got an update on it. It still looks really good and cleaned up nicely!
I love when you give us updates on your tanks!
This is an excellent example of an enclosure that borderline doesnt need maintenance. The right plants, substrate, inhabitants, creates something that will do ots own thing safely almost forever.
I love it that you now talk a lot about maintenance. Its very valuable information, thanks for that!
All the best to you, get well soon)
I keep a similar modified 3/4 gallon Aqueon minibow with only pond snails and plants/moss. Maintenance is still almost nil after three years and it is my only tank that hasn't been rescaped a half dozen times. That's where I get pond snail colonists for cycling new scapes!
I love this nano build!! I'm going to replicate this for a new scud colony one day. Always fun to see updates on old builds
You got me hooked every time a see a small container I think what would Tanner do with this!!!😊
The coolest guy in youtube, I really like how he manage all the palludarium... True artist
I just love your videos. So relaxing to watch, and your narration is great. I could listen to you for hours.
Love this one! I would have to put a fairy shrimp/scud in there. I am planning a couple of terrarium builds in some acrylic organizers I found. Will depend on some of your older vids for inspo and guidance. Thanks for sharing!
What a great time for a follow up! ive been thinking about building this recently to keep at my desk at work!
I like small setups and I get why you build it, but a vase with some pothos on a window sill... and some aquatic plants and snails, some gravel at the bottom and some moss or similar woul've done the trick too with much less effort and no electricity. I have a couple of those setups running for years on end and they look fab. No water changes, not even snail food. What looks especially nice are Myriophyllum. You can start growing them underwater but they will grow their way out and they look really nice hanging out after.
Im hoping you get into Accelus Aquaticus as mini aquatic pets; they are such nice helpful liittle critters and very good in nano setups...
Love your vids xx
Oh the snail build is my favorite build! It's so nice to check in and see how it's doing!
Thank you for sharing the journey and some behind the scenes
500 days, wow
This video got me into fishkeeping!
Pure genius! Perfect little home for some plants and snails.
It still looks amazing! Even better after the maintenance. Thanks for the update!
This is one of my favorites. So glad to see an update. ❤
Wow, I can’t believe this is still going. Amazing!!!
that is so cool. i always wanted to make a cute, easy little setup for pest snails, but never had much success. i love how you rigged all the filter stuff
This build was the first serpadesign video i ever watched!! Im so excited to see how it is now :D
always love to see you revisit old builds!
You have such a gift! I wish I could create stuff like this, I am more of a financial mind then creative! Loving the content!
You are Absolutely Incredible !!!!!
Pat yourself on the back 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I just put together my dream tank with Dojo Loaches ❤️❤️ thank you for all the inspiration! I hope you do a high flow river tank sometime soon, i bet you'd love the action!
Cute build. I'm glad it's still active. It's well designed.
I remember when you built this one.
Still adorable. Love the little snails too.
Oh, I remember the build video. Very cool to see an update!
That was my favourite video on youtube, It made me love snails
It's honestly so amazing and satisfying watching you make your projects, and really reassuring that you keep great care of your pets. Thx for helping me out with my own builds at home, without you I wouldn't know half of the stuff I know now 😅
I want to build something like this for my snails too! Defently going to use this video for inspiration. Thankyou 🐌🐌🐌🐌
Really pretty hardscape! A very cool small aquarium 🥰
I love the new addition!
According to Father Fish a thicker sand bed would help the mulm situation and not feeding the snails would probably combat the algae growth. Glad to see it’s still doing well!
Really!? I have such a big problem with mulm in one of my tanks. Could overfeeding also lead to mulm?
@@sharkloving_aquarist yeah for sure overfeeding is adding to it. Decomposing food that’s uneaten and more waste from the fish since they’re being fed more. I have sand and Malaysian trumpet snails that do a great job of pulling the mulm down in to the substrate for the plants to use.
Only a true artist looks at a bathroom organizer and makes it in to THIS!!!
FINALLY IVE BEEN WATING FOR THIS FOREVER LETS GOOOOO
Hey tanner, love the video! Was wondering if you've considered a vernal pool setup? With fairy shrimp and triops, and have it simulate the seasonal water fluctuations but inside a tank? There are many of them in pa and they're incredible. Just an idea! I've tried but I'm stumped but if anyone can do it I know it's you!
Ooh, that would be cool. Before they built tract housing on top of them, we used to have a bunch of vernal pools near my college in California. They were so interesting to visit.
i was so excited to see this update video, you some how got me invested lmao
Thanks for sharing!
I have one 0.5 l in bottle with Phyza sp.
They live without any food very well.
This project was there one that made me subscribe! Can't believe that was 500 days ago 🎉
I absolutely adore this! As someone who is clueless on the technical side of these little echo systems, I'd pay good money for this as a kit to build myself.
I think I want some tiny pet snails now. Honest question, is this a humane sized environment to keep a few tiny pest-snails in long term?
Love this build and the use of bladder snails
Looks great! As always, I enjoy the videos!
Love the bladder snail appreciation
That was a neat habitat for the snails. Good job 👍🏻
Really enjoying it Tanner ! Ty4Sharing
GOD bless 🙏
if I was to put an aquarium lke this in a kitchen, would I be able to use the water to grow herbs on top of the tank? I love how it looks and how simple it is to maintain!
Thank you for sharing this video... I always get so inspired!
You are this generation's Bob Ross, you should do a crayfish enclosure.
I just found fingernail clams in vernal pools in the woods near my house, this tank would be PERFECT for a few of them!
love these little guys
Thats just beautiful ❤ i.used to keep giant African snails but never thought of keeping water snails in a mini aquarium set up. Its awesome, i love how you find everyday obj3cts amd make something amazingly with it.
I hope you're feeling a lot better now! All the best to you and mrs serpa designs, how are her pea puffers? Much love to you both and your amazing minagary of aqua life ❤
This channel has really inspired me to make my own terrariums ❤
wow!!! it still looks great imo. i was expecting a snail explosion lol
Love your dedication to the art! Every video is interesting and well made.
Very fun build and cool update! Thanks
Would love to see more update videos in the future!
Amazing! this aquarium is so cool!!
The Salamanders find the nano builds very appealing. Thank you.
I love that your little aquarium is still going strong. 🐌🐌🐌🐌🌿🌾🌱🍀 Gina Hetlage
This was one of my favorite aquarium’s you made
Love maintenance videos.
Simply Amazing
Hey Tanner, Great video. Love your videos. I was wondering if you could put a few shrimp in there to help with the cleaning? Hope you have a great day.
YES NEW VIDEO!!!
Your craft is gorgeous 🎉
That was a cool video love the snails!!
It’s beautiful!
Looking back at this video, tiny tanks like this might also even be plausible to house some varieties of aquatic insects if they're small enough. Like maybe a small water scorpion, caddisfly larvae, water boatmen, or some of the exceptionally small varieties of diving beetles. 🤔
This is one of the craziest thing I have ever seen
