I've been searching so hard for a 'seated' pant fitting video! As a paraplegic... I can't tell you how hard it is finding any information about changing the pattern to fit the position I wear my trousers!!! All block fittings are for the standing position... and all fit models stand!!! When do you ever see what a finished pattern is going to look or feel like sitting? Honestly, there is so little information on this complex subject, yet able bodied people spend plenty of time sitting too! I've searched through so many patten drafting books, watched so many videos... there really does need to be more. I'm trying to draft pants that function at their best whilst sitting, and allow one to stand, for instance.. I use a standing frame to stand for a small while every day), so I want them to look thier best whilst sitting... the opposite of every pants pattern out there. lol So, a huge thank you for noticing that there is a deficit of information in this area of pattern drafting! :) :) :)
I'm so happy this helps you!! I do focus on what the pants are doing while sitting when I'm teaching pants fitting... It's a balance between having a "nice' looking leg that doesn't have lots of wrinkles when standing ....and enough vertical ease to sit comfortably. The tricky part is that that extra vertical length can get caught up on your knee/calf causing wrinkles when you stand... Making room by creating a wider leg lets the pants fall nicely if you need extra vertical length to sit. ...and that's assuming the crotch is fitting properly! Thanks for fitting along with me
Great to have three different options to solve this fitting challenge. The older I get and the more I do I realise there are no hard and fast rules, it's whatever it takes to get it to fit comfortably.
That is so true!! I love some of the comments from subscribers where they are noticing they might need to split up the total adjustment among a couple or all three adjustments based on what will make the muslin more comfortable. Thanks for fitting along with me
This was really helpful! I feel like I better understand how the adjustments are shifting volume around. This video was nicely done and well-edited, too. I felt it was very clear and concise, and I enjoyed it. I’ve taken classes with you on several occasions, and it has been great to see you refining your approach to pants fitting. Thank you very much.
Glad it was helpful! ...Every time I think I "know everything" about pants fitting, I learn something new... But now, I feel like I've figured it the core steps to streamline the process! It's so fun for me to nerd around with fitting and pattern adjustments, thanks for watching
Thank you so much. This is so helpful. I’m going to try all 3 methods tomorrow and let you know what works best for me. I have a very prominent, low hanging bottom and I believe you’ve just given me keys to unlock my fitting challenges. Oh and I also have full upper thighs.
My Pleasure! It sounds like you can split up the total amount you need to add among all three of adjustments!! Start by comparing the fit of the upper thigh to determine how much you can extend the crotch point. Thanks for fitting along with me
😅 i feel like you've been watching me try to make my first pair of trousers. I have forward tilting hips, prominent rear, and (as i like to call it) a low slung butt with full thighs. Thank you for confirming that I've been making the right choices. I did watch many of your previous videos to get this far.
This is great and solves exactly my problem, like I perhaps told you in the comments below, thank you so much. But how does it work on the other side of the body? When I sit down my tummy comes more out and I need more room in the front of the pants also. Big tummy sitting between waist and crotch.
Yes, you can make this adjustment in the front to make room. You can deepen the front crotch curve and extend the crotch point to make more length and inside room. You may need to play with the exact measurements to figure out what you need to add. Hope this helps, and I'm sorry for the delayed response!
That depends on whether you need more ease along your upper thigh. If you also need room there, you can extend the crotch extensions. If you have slender upper thighs and do not need extra ease, you will need to scoop out the back of the crotch curve (toward the side seam, not down) to make more room inside your pants... The side seam will need to be let out to maintain the measurement of the full hip. You can also angle the straight part of the CB seam toward the side seam to make more room inside. here's a tutorial for that! ruclips.net/video/YKO1_elKXMA/видео.html Thanks for fitting along with me
@@JSternDesigns Thank you so much for all this information! I have a VERY prominent butt, also called swayback (?) so I've always had trouble with the back waistband sliding way down whenever I sit down and then my panties show above the waistband of the pants....not the look I'm going for! Thank you for this and I'm going to try various changes to the pattern as you've shown in different videos until I get the fit I'm looking for. Wish I would have learned this stuff in school when I took home economics in 7th and 8th grades!
I have the sitting issue. All my pants slide down in back, even ready made. For low butt and full inner thighs, would you scoop first then add for full thigh or vice versa on the back pattern piece? Can full thigh adjustment be on the front piece and low butt be on the back to distribute? Your thoughts, please. Thank you for the wonderful video!
Think of the back crotch curve like it's a chair you're going to sit in... If the base of your "chair" is not long enough to sit down in, the back waistband will slide down. Adding to the crotch extension will give you more length. But if you have enough ease on your upper thigh already, then you can't do that.. Try scooping the back of the crotch out horizontally (not downward)... This may require you to let out the side seam if it feels snug. Here's a tutorial showing how to do this: ruclips.net/video/YKO1_elKXMA/видео.html Hope this helps, Thanks for fitting along with me!
I know this will help me down the road. My Bootstrap pants form is coming along fine. My center front seam only needs to be backed up one inch and the back center seam needs to be backed up 2 inches. The back is somewhat low but it seems it kind of tapers down lower the more towards the front it goes. So Im thinking of tapering starting at 0 at center back seam up 2- 3 inches at the other end. I don’t want to mess with the crotch area because right now that area is tight to my body and that is exactly what I want with the Bootstrap pants form. The legs need to be tapered in some but that’s not too difficult. I plan on getting this one leg straight and then I’m going to do a 2 leg muslin just to be absolutely sure before I do the real thing. I love how the horizontal lines fall exactly at the groin and knee area.
I love your videos! I finally have pants that look terrific standing up, but are very tight sitting down. I have a low flat butt, so it looks like more scooping is the answer. It's interesting that letting out the side seams doesn't solve the problem. What do you suggest for a belly measurement that is larger than my hip measurement?
Thanks so much... Without seeing your pants, the first thing that comes to mind is that the front crotch curve may be too low (far away from your body)... This restricts movement and makes things snug when you sit and bend. Check this out before scooping! ruclips.net/video/MLcVycwlcvA/видео.html Hope this helps, thanks for fitting along with me
Depending on your shape, you might be able to combine them... especially if you need a lot of extra room, you can add some to the inseam by extending crotch extension... then slide the pattern back to add some there as well! The only one I would not add to the mix is scooping down ...if you don't have a low behind because that can screw up the shape of the crotch curve so it doesn't agree with your shape.
RTW Question: if this problem occurs in a purchased pair of jeans, would it work if I open up the inner thigh seam and add a wedge to the inner back seam?

what do you do for a really large bottom? Like a pear shape but a really large bottom of the pear?

@@JSternDesigns Thank you!
A couple of times I have had pants that I couldn't bend my knees. When I bent my knee the cloth would get tight over my knee cap.
That can be caused by the front crotch curve being far from your body :) (without seeing them, that's my best guess!) Thanks for watching
