      Magic Find is needed. From what I've seen so far, PoE2 looks like skill is going to be a much larger factor.
      Being good enough to be able to afford to slot it in is the reward for being that "Let me Solo Her" guy.
      But I understand that this was that one dudes only chance he thought he had to kill it.

    Sounds like the initial scope for PoE2 is in place and all they're doing from now until the beta releases is bring it up to the standard they expect from themselves.
    Here's to hoping we get more class/ascendancy rundowns soon.

    I did want a little more exploration on the "no life nodes on the tree" discussion. Does strength still give flat life? Are people going to just got jewel sockets to get their maximum life increases? Doesn't ES just naturally end up in the same situation that Johnathan described of how it feels like a certain number of nodes is mandatory?
    When it comes to the life node discussion, I keep thinking back to a line from the streamer PerryThePig from Last Epoch when talking about the life meta in that game: If hybrid life is available for that gear slot, you should have it on your gear for that slot. Sure, trying to get as much life as you can in PoE is important as well, but you can always balance the lack of life you have on your gear with getting more points on the tree. In the current situation that we've heard so far, it seems like we're going to be in a similar situation in PoE2 where it becomes vitally important to have every possible life affix you can have on every gear slot that can roll it because you're lacking the ability to get it elsewhere. This in turn, just like in LE, pushes you away from being able to invest into things like Armour or Evasion since your available prefixes are going to be more restricted to life. It also would potentially push you away from using Influenced gear that doesn't provide an affix that is build enabling because you don't want to expand the modifier pool and hurt your chances of getting life.
    Maybe it's not going to end up that way. Hopefully it doesn't. But it is one concern that I have with the system he has described. I would like to hear a deeper dive on that subject in the future if you're able to get him again, or if another content creator reads this that has the opportunity.

      ES changes your overall hit pool, but doesn't layer like armor and evasion do. However, all of them affect your overall EHP, and Energy Shield only really exists on one half of the passive tree. You're not going to go Duelist/Mercenary and think, "How can I get enough Energy Shield" becasue it won't be a viable option for you. As a Witch/Sorceress, you probably will always consider Energy Shield because it's the most plentiful near your starting node, however it might be more viable for you to go for armor if you decide to play a strength skill as a sorceress because you won't have to have as much intelligence to use the best energy shield bases.

      I think you can avoid the kind of life meta LE has if relying on life to that extent isn't enough defense or if its availability isn't the issue. Life should only ever be the baseline that is then multiplied by whichever other defense layer you specialize in, be it Armour, Energy Shield, Evasion, or a mixture of them. At some point, stacking life needs to hit diminishing returns in a way where it becomes more beneficial to choose something else over it (although there should be something in the game that enables pure life stacking at high investment). Also, I would imagine that the other sources of life in PoE2 will compensate for the fact that you can't get it on the tree.

      @@Zevrael Flat life would naturally fall off, so maybe PoE should remove % life gains but add in some flat life sources from most places. Then also have % life only available on unique gear or the equivalent of an influenced mod that competes with other similarly strong mods.

      This is also a scenario that HEAVILY depends on the poe 2 balancing. if the overall effectiveness of Life in poe 2 means that 3k life is identical to 5k life in Poe1 it again doesnt become a problem. If the overall effectiveness is similar, then you definitely have a problem that needs to be fixed. But I feel like this is only something we will really know when we actually play the game

    In regards to his flask refilling discussion: I think the reason it works in a Souls-like game is that you are regularly reaching "checkpoints" in an area or zone that refill your resources and in Elden Rings case pack mobs in the open world DO refill your healing flasks if you defeat all of them. This creates an encouraging system to always press forward, cause either you'll get more flasks from beating that group of enemies, or you'll come across another checkpoint to refill your resources. In either case, there is forward progression. Without that forward progression, it ends up feeling tedious.

    Yea, the flasks not feeling good to press when you use WASD, I personally use an MMO mouse which just has a bunch of extra buttons on it. I have 1-12 on my thumb so that what I would suggest is looking into a new mouse and there are work around to making that feel better. You can also re-map keys on your keyboard to whatever you want and just have a profile for poe. It's a pain but I'm not too worried about it.

    So this interview was kinda what led to the destruction of quant. I'm happy for you Pal!
    I personally didn't care much about MF, never indulged in it, but I thnk both games are better off without quant. Jonathan said in a more recent interview that rarity affects the quality of curreny dropped in poe2, but at least in poe1 raw div drops are def not the main source of currency so kinda hoping it would be the same in poe2

    Just dropped by to say thanks for asking about console! I watched all of the interviews with Jonathan and you are the first person to have a very direct question like that.
    But now after hearing the answer from Jonathan, or no answer lol I'm starting to wonder if console version is developed by other studio? I understand he cannot speak about cooperating with Sony etc but couldn't he at least mention some of the design decisions (or challenges) for developing for console? Like, there is bunch of things he has to take into consideration when trying to create good UX for controller-only gameplay, or just UI for big screens, reading buffs/debuffs without hovering over an icon.

      Controller always has good support since people play with controller on PC too.
      The real issues/questions are:
      1.) Will there be fully functional cross plattform trade
      2.) Will there be crossplattform progress from console to PC
      3.) Will the auction house UI on console still be there
      4.) Will console have a public group finder this time
      Things like these are huge make or break points this time around, if they half ass this again the game will struggle on console since Last Epoch is working on a console version too.

    it's kinda scary to go YOLO and not mindlessly follow build guide
    But this big patch notes inspired me to do so... just go there and play it
    Although the learning process is so tedious, but once i get the references from many different YTber for an archetypes
    I feel like i just gotta do it.

    Great interview. Really covered a lot I hadn't heard before.
    I do wish someone would ask Jonathan if they are willing to pull a lot of MORE scaling out of PoE2 to keep it under control. He briefly touched on it but no one is making the connection that PoE1 is the way it is because of multipliers.

      @@facelessone86 We already have seen tons of them and almost all of them do not multiply dmg, and if they do they have strict requirements like the monster must have broken armor but the skill supported cannot inflict broken armor.

    Good to hear the endgame will start off simple. Thought all the league mechanics from PoE1 were going to be piled in and it's really overwhelming having so many league mechanics as a newer player.

    i know im probably the minority here...
    but when jonathan talked about how base items will probably be in higher demand and thus become more valuable, i couldnt help but think about diablo2... i realy wished someone would have asked him if maybe quality isnt a modifyable stat anymore (no more whedstones/armourer scrabs), so that certain white bases dropping with 20 or even 30 quality is actually a gg drop :D
    many probably wouldnt like that, but i, i would love it!

      We already have that on PoE 1 on armour with sacred orbs and nobody really cares about it except on ES gear, it could be more interesting on weapons I guess.

      the gear can only be rolled 1 time now and then you throw it away if its bad instead of rerolling again , so quality would just be another limiting factor just like sacred orbs , in d2 you allways get the rune word so its hard to compare

    The thing that makes magic find creeping up is people getting better at the game (or some people get better at the game and some get better at following guides) which makes 90% want to get as good gear as they can or else they cant do t16s to 90% can afford to run mf and you feel like missing out if you dont.

      No what is making magic find creeping up is that they keep doing leagues that work with or modify content in maps which is causing gigantic loot multipliers. They need to stop doing leagues that buff loot from regular mobs.

    Choice is always the best way. I would love to see some meta-feature that sacrifices all reactive flasks for power. Cos if you are building defense, flasks may be useless in the endgame. Let's see how GGG will balance it all out

    I was one of the first people to buy the initial $1000 supporter pack for PoE1 and played it for ages without feeling the need to ever dig deeply into the endgame, because I just enjoy making original builds and exploring ideas. I agree with every design direction Jonathon is doing, and I am VERY glad he is willing to push against the Reddit hivemind, even when they fuss and whine and think they own the world.

    OOF the removal of scour will change crafting forever. Most if not all top tier crafts are focused around a gg base where people spending mirrors in worth of currency just to obtain.

    I feel like it is EXTREMELY uncommon for the lead designer/game director to be a day 1 player of another relatively niche indie game within the same genre. For Jonathan to speak so thoroughly on No Rest for the Wicked makes it pretty clear he's a true fan of the genre as a whole, for any of the few doubters out there.

      the big part there would be to have it balanced correctly.
      I personally dont care about magic find because quite often things I farm do not scale with MF.
      However I can absolutely understand people being against it if just by slapping MF gear on stuff you get a vastly higher amount of currency than without it which kinda forces you into it if you want to be somewhat efficient.
      Affliction was obviously very over the top broken but that highlithed exactly what could be the problem.
      MF was just so much better than non MF that it felt like you shot yourself in the leg if you dont join it.
      I started affliction doing my blights getting 10div/h and later switched to the mf shit getting 40-50div/h WITHOUT counting any of the mirrors, t0 uniques or div loot explosions I got. And I got 2 mirrors and plenty of t0 and loot explosions.
      Sure that strat was also rewarding without MF but it was no comparison between non MF and MF.
      And if strats that are MFable exist that are super profitable MF will always make that problem much bigger than it should be and the difference between joining in on the new strat and slapping some mf on compared to farming the other mechanics/strats grows bigger.
      So in the end is it that MF is inherently bad? not really. But it always will make any slight imbalance much more problematic.
      I would love to see them keep rarity and either remove quantity or let quantity only affect gear pieces itself.
      This way it still absolutely has its use. People in ssf can farm more uniques or maybe good rare bases and people in trade have the ability to farm more t1 or even t0 uniques but you dont just shoot the droprate of currency, scarabs, etc. to the moon

    on the issue for mf, the problem i see is because with mf you can get more loot out of a lower tier map then in a higher tier map with a stronger character so it just makes mf superior no matter what

    I liked the interview but... You guys are thinking POE2 is the same game as POE1. Slow and methodic combat without it auto doing stuff is what makes better gameplay. If you want a walking simulator of mindless 1 button spamming go back to POE1 or other arpgs for that point.
    All in all good work though on questions. 👍

    1:15:32 if you one shot the whole screen, movement speed becomes a dmg scaler, while in the beginning it might be considered a defensive stat since it helps you to avoid attacks.
    trading affix slots for MF doesn't feel good and, being able to get MF from doing some kind of challenge might be a good alternative, just an idea. maybe also temporary MF buffs from flasks or other sources

    I love how adamant Palsteron was about magic find. It does feel bad that if you're not running a build that can support running some level of MF, that you're missing out on loot. Especially in a trade server, you need to be making a certain amount of currency to continue your build. I don't think MF should be able to do the hardest content, it doesn't make sense. Make map mechanics more rewarding.

      I feel like MF itself isnt the problem, or as Jonathan said the opportunity cost. Its much more problematic that it locks certain content, and farms behind actually using mf. Especially when it comes to trade league, you arent gonna run high investment div card strats without MF because its priced around using MF. I feel like that is a much bigger problem than the overall power level.

      @@shanepurcell8116 I think people are sorely missing the issue the past like 6 months. its not MF, its the leagues. the leagues have been shitting out multipliers for loot to almost all mobs in the map. This is causing MF to become VERY strong when before it was just good for certain strategies that never really outpriced most people. Now its causing mass devaluing of items and mass inflation to certain shit because of the insane multipliers on drops caused by affliction and necro mechanics that ALSO get multiplied with MF on gear.

      @@shanepurcell8116 They needed nerfs regardless. MF just makes it worse because the early strats didn't take too much to do and most people were geared by time they got patched in.

    Absolutely despise MF. Its absolutely a corrosive mechanic in every aRPG I have played.
    It interferes with the core loop of developing your character.
    I agree with Jonathan that having a 3 vector for preogression is inportant. I dont think MF is the answer. Its only here because its been grandathered in from Diablo 2.

    I think Jonathan kinda missed the point on MF and character progression. Us POE players spend days and countless currency to gain %0.001 dps when we don't even need it. I think the problem he believes solved by MF is not a problem at all.

      I don't think he missed the point. I think the issue is a lot of the anti-MF crowd forget there's just as many people that don't have the same problems they/you fo with MF. There are many players that straight up ignore it - like myself, or Subtractem - and there are just as many that like the way MF is done in PoE1. It's a very subjective issue with compelling arguments from all sides, so simply removing it will cause problems.

    can someone ask GGG how the parent league system works for poe2? i would really like to see hc leagues transfering to their softcore equivalent instead of standard graveyard. makes it easier to get friends to at least try hc once per league.

    I don't like MF as a stat. Feels to me like scaling your character with better gear/stats/skill choices should in principle allow you to complete harder and harder content. In theory if the difficulty of the content = more or better loot, by becoming stronger you increase your "natural" MF. When it exists as a stat/optional tradeoff somewhere in the build, it becomes sort of mandatory. If a character can't beat the hardest content, too bad, get good and make a build that can handle it.

      Yeah, I felt that too. I appreciate the pushback, but it's clear that Jonathan wasn't particularly on either side and understood both sides of the argument, so it was a bit like preaching to the choir. Plus, we all know who originally wanted MF in the first place.

      I’m ready for a big discussion on how MF combined with other recent Strats can distort the game around it (T17s / Affliction ) but the same argument can be made for defensive or DPS builds too being ‘too good’ at Ubers so they make money on boss drops?
      Variety and player choice is critical and the issue seems to come more from overly rewarding MF vs other Strats in Quantity rather than rarity

      Honestly, if you look at how the conversation went, he was the one who kept it going. He asked me stuff back constantly and seemed genuinely interested, then even asked the others as well. That gave me an opening to go a little bit more indepth, which he even said he appreciated. So while I agree it dragged on, I'm not sure how I could've handled it much better tbh.

    The issue with flask charges is simply one of volume. I play a game like elden ring with limited flask charges for a total playtime of how much I may play a single league of Path.

      I am going to disagree because Jonathan interrupts and speaks while someone else is speaking, all the time.
      I honestly felt like Pal was just trying to get his whole opinion across to be evaluated as a whole, to make sure that there wasn't a missed nuance in his point. It was also mainly during the Magic Find portion of the talks. Outside of that, he was trying to allow anyone else who spoke at the same time space to speak.

      I don't fault Palstron for wanting to get his point across. But I feel it could have been done better without jumping in. It happened in more places than the 'Magic Find' part, just that was the most egregious.
      I'll reiterate this is not an attack on either. Interviewing people is not easy. But generaly you want to listen more than speak when you are the one doing the interview.

    MF isn't the problem that causes disparity. The disparity is someone sleeping 5 to 6 hours a day and playing 17-19 hours for the rest of the day vs the person sleeping 5 to 6 hours a day to play only 4 hours because they have a job and family. The argument is mute it all boils down to time played and the former gets almost 5 days per the latter's 1.

      True. It's hard to balance around a single vector of "loot per hour" if that's all people care about. Of course people who play 16 hours a day and use only the most optimal builds are going to get more loot, regardless of whether that means that they are faster and stronger or that they can afford to have more MF gear.
      Removing MF and balancing top end content around top end damage and defenses just means fewer viable builds that can do that content while changing nothing about who's making the most currency as Jonathan was getting at. It damages people who don't care while doing nothing for people who do care.
      The complaints are misguided. It's like a psychological issue where they'd have to trick people into not feeling like they're missing out because they're not playing 16 hours a day. That, or tell people to learn to deal with their FOMO and understand that the game will always have playstyles that are more optimal than others on the loot per hour scale.

    hes saying hes forced to use builds that are capable of clearing the toughest content with MF slotted,
    bc if he doesnt then he feels bad? bc hes not playing as absolutely efficient as possible??...
    man what happened to games just needing to be fun? there are SOOOO many cool builds in PoE.
    youre not forced into anything.
    like just play the game, idk how else to say it.
    why do you care about that? just play how you want to play.
    and if you WANT to play as efficient as possible, YES by definition you are pigeon holing your self.
    thats a YOU problem. there can only be ONE most efficient way to play the game.

      @@MrMatigno yeah it's never really been an issue (as a WoW player), but people are complaining more because they're playing a diablo-style game where they're used to pressing not very many buttons (3-4 at most, 1-2 in a ton of cases).
      understandable that people are worried about 5 flasks, and like 5-7 active skills. we'll just have to see in beta down the road tbh.

    Really hope there is no zoom in POE2. We already have POE1 for that and I'm tired of it. I want a game were every pack needs to be approached with a plan and clever use of skills that depends on the mix of enemies and the environment.
    One of my biggest fears for POE2 is that content creators will push the developers to ruin the game. The combos they've displayed look supper fun but simply will not work with POE1 game speed. In my opinion it is important that white monsters have life spans in the end game. They need to exist for several hits and 3-10 seconds for the game to feel fun!
    Really hope automation is low as well.

    Didn't listen to all of it, but is there any talk about making mid-game gearing less painful?
    IE. Getting 100% ailment res so I don't freeze in place every other pack, not needing to maintain max resists to not be one-shot, needing max block, max spell suppression, armor+evasion auras, just to survive, etc.

    The keybutton bloat is a huge issue to me. Jonathan basically handwaved it in this interview, but i straight up do not want to play a game that has as many required keybinds as poe2 will at this point. If i wanted to play a game like that, I'd go play WoW or ff14.

      I agree. I don't mind having multiple buttons to press, but this was the original problem with flasks and why that added instilling orbs.
      I prefer less buttons to press, i'm sure I'm not the only one.
      Hopefully they add more forms of automation.

    Nice interview!
    interviwers ranking (personal opinion):
    Pal: challenging, engaging, pushing his ideas. Example: no life on the tree but ES nodes yes? Noice!
    Subtractem and CL9: a little in awe (mostly CL9), just accepting what Jonathan is telling them without raising many concerns. Example: crafting now requires having a mega-stack of white items. It sounds like crafting jewels for "the adorned". A very tedious and space-consuming process. CL9 immediately recognized it but he did not push back very much (at least I felt this).
    I understand that the game is not out yet so you may want to not come out harsh on this and wait to express strong opinions but as a feeling Pal came out on top as interviewer.
    PS: I greatly appreciate the content of all these interviewers and this is not a critique on them or their work as streamers. This is just a personal critique on their interviewing skills (hopefully constructive) as they may continue doing interviews in the future (as interviewers obv).

    Would be awesome to directly buyout from peoples stashes instead of having to go into their hideout and actually trade with them. it would fix pricefixing where 100 people list the same thing for 1c but it only actually gets sold at 10c. would also fix some connection issues with getting into someone elses hideout
    People with enough currency would still be able to buy out all supply and list it at a higher price, but i think this is going to be possible in any economy

So forcing passive points into more of life rather than a separate form of defensive is bad. It forces tou to lose points bc you should naturally have enough life.     I love how Jonathan throws some wee digs at NRFTW. They have been insanely cocky, and imo released a Early Access version that have WAY to little content, bad itemization and lacking skill system to grant them being that cocky. Legend. Im not saying the game is bad, because it is not, but it is not even close to the "arpg" they want to market it as.

    I think magic find can be fun. Let me choose the thief ascendency that has more magicfind when opening treasures, the bard that gives the group magicfind and/or just lasthits with culling strike and mf gear :D
    It can be something that does not need and should not be the best thing to do but some people like me like to find a way to enable stupid things like that.
    I will also try to play that light radius templar if you give me interesting items/ascendency for it.

    Another thing you can do with MF is take if off of gear and put it somewhere else where everyone can build it up and it doesn’t pigeon hold you into certain builds being better or worse right.
    Add a new item slot like an idol that is specific to magic and item find.
    Idols drop from bosses etc.
    This takes it off of builds cause anyone can get it and do it.
    Also boost the MF for party play. This will help with people losing max MF builds and incentivize MP and playing with friends
    Could be good middle ground. Can even make a flask roll MF buff.

    Tooltip dmg solution: Just give us DPS meter Arena where we can go and do our full rotation of skills and debuffs we use and fight that for X amout of time, when we stop we get our avarage DPS on there and can sleep happy couse number biiiiiig...? Thank you (LIKE GUILD WARS 2)

      In what way? This is the first interview after the LA event by someone there and we specifically talk about the impact of the changes seen there.
      We combed through all previous interviews and made sure we were asking new questions, or at least questions from a new angle.

      No, they were super clunky in the Exilecon demo. I'm very skeptical of them if they don't remove the 1-2 second delay on swapping but we'll see how it plays out on release.

      @@subtractem Oh, this was not responding to the way any of you addressed topics, was a great convo and trade league is obviously the most popular game-mode. simply the way of playing the game is measured in currency per time invested, rabbit-holing into very specific playstyle, as Pal mentioned with the MF unique gear - all for the purpose of making currency at large, instead of fun per activity and such. (yes , people also enjoy making bank :p)
