Mike Farrell was one of the American machine gunners towards the end of the show that shot down Ens. Parker, I believe that's the same Mike Farrell as BJ Honeycutt of MASH series.
I been bingeing on your cool collection here I subscribed. I really appreciate these uploads and with no advertising, it's nice to see someone not being selfish for a change, like anyone really clicks the adds lol.. Thank you.
For those of you who love watching M*A*S*H, you'll notice the gunner is Mike Farrell who played BJ Hunnicutt. M*A*S*H also had a similar epsiode titled 5 o'clock Charlie.
Yeah obviously this is where they got the inspiration for the episode. Mike Farrell wasn't on M*A*S*H yet when 5 o'clock Charlie was made. It was still Trapper.
MASH swiped not just from McHales Navy but from F-Troop. There was one episode with Frank in command, they did the whole F-Troop line up for morning assembly deal, Radar playing the bugle badly like Dobbs, etc etc. Sure enough in the credits(I forgot if it was the director or a writer, but am 80% sure it was the director)there was an F-Troop alum. RIP Forest Tucker, you and the Anaconda.
"THIS GUY HAS COME OVER EVERYDAY FOR A SOLID MONTH AND DROPPED ONE LOUSY BOMB AND NEVER HIT ONE THING! If he's a menace then I'm a ring tailed goony Bird!" "Well you just layed an egg ring tail"
I believe, during the Korean War, there really was a "Washing Machine Charlie(s)". It was a Russian Po-2 biplane flown only at night on "harassment" missions. The goal was to deny a restful sleep for the allies. During WWII the Germans called them "Night Witches" because they were flown by women pilots. Because they could use any flat surface for a landing field, they operated close to the front lines, flew for a short time and distance, dropped their small payload, then disappeared. They were very difficult to counter.

I do believe there is some truth to that. There were some NVA assisting the Chinese in let us say other opportunistic operations and those other military folks dedicated themselves to bombing & strafing USA forces most evenings. There is a recorded record of a Washington Machine Charlie stated as being someone employed by or inspired by home ruled Japanese forces having holding thee really old obsolete planes. They talked mostly civilians into flying those night time harassment missions which actually were made up of older Japanese Russian pilots and a few brave Japanese women. However that enigma Called Washing Machine Charlie was a real WWII Jap pilot. The docs were released to some early truthers.... That is documented. Where the records R who the hell knows... But there were actual Japanese harassment squadrons made up of planes not even suited 4 bombardment. The inspiration was to disrupt ppl and or not let our USA troops rest. There R several British intelligence agencies that have also confirmed the same stories. Aussie forces occupied Manila Island in late 1945. They also stated the same stories. Old aintique aircraft flew in low under most radar. Some were piloted by older Japaense women children & men & these unique non military folks hand dropped exploding garbage ordnance. I site March 19th 1944 Cebu City Philippines a low flying unarmed aircraft of unknown MFG flew within ground battery range and was promptly shot down. In the bay a woman emerged from the wreckage of the aircraft.
Just noticed, on the opening credits, the camera boat is filming the PT 73, and it only has 2 torpedo tubes, and 6 depth charges in place of where the aft tubes should be. I like to nitpick the scenes. Bwahahaha!!!
New to this particular channel on youtube. Ensign Parker is Navy! How does he pilot a plane!? Yes I know this is sitcom based on WWII in the Pacific and as such it has broad reach. Just a thought, No harm intended. Thank you.
Just how do they work this out as far as Ensign Parker flying a plane????? Have not watched all of the episode at this point. Will post later as to finish! Ain't this fun!?
John Wright starring as Willy Moss, is holding what appears to be a German Luger(P08). This is period correct. The Japanese Nambu had a NOTORIOUS reputation as a SH1TTY handgun, so the Japanese military allowed officers to purchase their own sidearms. Many Japanese officers during the war bought German handguns.
The main problem with this episode is anyone who has studied world War II United States Navy planes can tell the plane they are using for a zero is a U.S. Navy Wild Cat they were in use before the improved Hell Cat came into existence. And the song should actually been Hooray for Parker, what a disgrace, Hooray for Parker a major pain in the ace..😂
Oh come on this was a comedy, shooting people up would have changed the entire character of the show. They took a lot of liberties with historical aspect of the war, just like Hogans Hero's did.
Ageless Timeless treasure as well as history... McHale reminds me of me... I come home from work then just try to have a beer & relax then discover I got a big fire lit under my @ss..
Hmmm ... presuming these episodes have been uploaded and labeled in broadcast order, how is it that the wingtip they just purchased was used in a previous episode???
There is no flow from episode to episode, every show was different, they just reused props and a lot of the nobodies like the gun crews, nurses, island girls were studio employees making a few extra dollars and getting to be scene on TV
Yes and no... Actually the first raider plane to get nicknamed Washing machine Charlie was a flying boat, that never made a serious run on the base. Once the disturbance as known to cause some havoc. The Japanese would run any noisy aircraft over islands known to be held by the allies just to cause disturbance. The twin engined night fighters could disrupt bombing activity and carry a payload.
Plus this is a comedy sitcom and they do take liberties with history and machines, also 1960's cinema was challenging to say the least to provide authentic and realistic action shots.
@@mikeejay63 It's called a nuisance raid. When Dad was on Woodlark Island, he said they had them daily. His battle station was an Orliken 20MM. He said he never hit anything, but once he fired, the Marine Air Defense unit on the other side of the hill knew how much time they had to man their twin Bofors 40MM and what direction to fire.
At the end Mr. Parker bales out of a Japanese plane in a parachute which is politically incorrect, cause Japanese pilots had no parachutes. The Japanese felt it was better to crash and die than to become a prisoner of war.
