Good review. I hated that 1 character lol but I'm interested in telltale returning...would have liked to have heard more about that huge part of their story. The expanse was cancelled like 2 or 3 times? So I cant imagine there is any market for this. Shame.
The sequel promises to be awesome. But there's high expectations for it since the first one was so well received. As such the devs announced that release will be delayed into 2024 to ensure it's not rushed.
Star Trek. Expanse. Even my wife who is not a gamer is being drawn in. The world needs adventure games/interactive movies and they are practically there only game in town. I'm glad FMV games are making a comeback as well but sadly they are all thriller/horror not scifi/anime/adventure like I want.
The main reason the original Telltale died was because they were spending huge amounts getting licenses to established IPs to make games that just didn't sell that well, so feels kind of weird to see them make a game like this.
Wouldn't be surprised if Amazon helped them out too, for a cut. They've probably yet to see a decent return on a premium series they bought so late in its lifecycle (everyone who has Prime and loves the show should put it on continuous play in a background tab for a couple of nights).
The reason they died was because they were doing all of their work in-house while paying 300 employees at a time and which lead to unwieldy business practices. Now they are a team of only 28 people working with external teams and companies which has proven to be more sustainable and less costly.
I've always been puzzled why movies studios don't PAY companies to use their license or at least front them the money. It's free advertising for their product. But... That's greed I guess.
Honestly, I think playing this will help me get into the show. I don't know why, but I've started it like 3 times lol. I think maybe it's the punisher walking around in a fedora... I can't stand them lmao petty I know.

Camina and Cara Gee's performance were my favorite from the show. So this is a buy for me. Anyone who is a fan of the show should check out the novels. The novella that focuses on Amos back on earth, "The Churn" is particularly fantastic.
It's almost like getting money from Epic to cover development costs is worth more than pandering to a handful of weirdos who are afraid of an extra PC launcher.
As an Expanse fanatic I’m buying it either way, but to be fair I was genuinely surprised by how much EGS has added in terms of features since I last used it
Game was fanstastic. Hooked me so much I am now starting the tv show. TellTalle games need more love. Their games are unique and emotionally impactful. Wolf Among Us, Walking Dead Season 1, Batman, and now The Expanse are my favorite games of theirs
I absolutely loved The Expanse and have been anticipating this game for months. I enjoyed what I played, but, I felt a bit let down when it ended in an hour. I bought the deluxe edition, and at $45, that ends up being $9 per hour episode. My baseline for video games is usually $1 per hour. This is more like movie theater pricing. I guess I could replay it to explore the branching paths, but I really wish they made the eps at least twice as long or at least released them all at once. Waiting two weeks for another hours worth is rough.
I don't understand how choices could possibly matter in a video game prequel to a show. Either every choice you make has no impact or the prequel is just non canon if you make certain choices.
I'll have to check out The Expanse. It's good to see Telltale Games make a comeback. Thanks, Karak! As always, I appreciate the hard work! God bless and stay safe
bro thank you for mentioning the old lady's voice actress. I couldn't help but cringe every time she talked, not necessarily cause of her lines or anything, just the performance. it's pretty bad
To me the main question here is how short is too short for game episodes. Releasing a 5 hour game in episodic format seems an odd choice. This is much shorter than prior Telltale games. Even as an Expanse fan I'm gonne pick this up in completed form during a sale.
My biggest peeve with Telltale games has always been the illusion of choice. No matter what choices you make, they all pretty much arrive at the same final outcome, just in different ways. And so it tells a great story, but it fails to make me feel invested in that story, because the ending is still their choice, not my choice. I'll wait and see reviews on the full series.
Quite true. It's obvious that making true branches in plots would take serious effort, but still. What you wrote is the biggest flaw in their games. End result is still is in the same ball park.
Idk The wolf among us, Batman season 2 even had 2 completely different episode 5's just based on the choices you made during the game so while I understand this comment but it also is a bit of a gross understatment to Telltale's ability to make character relations change alot during the game. so.....illusion of choice? I wouldn't call it that
"Flashes forwarded 8 hours prior" i think that could be a flashback. But overall great video, i really enjoyed the exploration of the destroyed ship and the zero G, walking up the walls etc. Looking forward to the next episode.

This is not actually a Telltale made game, Deck Nine is the developer and you know them from Life is Strange follow up games. And this is a good thing, Deck Nine has made a good Expanse game here and they yeah have made it in "spirit" of earlier Telltale games.
Honestly I kind of hope they leave it at season 6. Spins offs? Sure. Continuation? Pass. After the time jump in the books the Laconia Empire just… steamrolls everything. It’s boring. Besides, it’s a mostly new cast of characters that aren’t interesting
How different are the story outcome that you can make from your choices? The first telltale games had me but on subsequent renders, I found that there really wasn't much choice just an illusion of such is this new iteration of telltale games different?
Honestly it was way too short. Like, basically no conversations with characters. You barely get to settle into "your ship." And everything you pick up, you never even get to give the item to the character. It was fuckin weird. Like they rushed the first episode. I did enjoy it though. They just better not do this short of episodes next season. Absurd. So $40 I paid for 5 - 45 minute episodes? That's a rip off.
Now wrap that "compelling story" into an actual game with actual gameplay. THEN and only then we can talk. When The Expanse game has Mass Effect gameplay wrapped around that "compelling story" i will be interested.
