I built a 400/500 stroker from a sonic tested thick wall Dodge block.using stock length Mopar rods and 4.150 stroke crank the 2618 pistons and total seal rings only weighed 685 grams and had an oil support ring...I sent the pistons to Calico for skirt coatings and glad I did. The engine revs clean and quick to 6600 rpms very nicely with little to no piston noises and a very good oil analysis
Right on!
I drive by Line 2 Line every day. They coated my pistons. No complaints.
I have been using piston skirt coating since the 90's and it definitely helps.
Steve Morris Engines has done some testing with the Line 2 Line coatings as well and was very impressed. He has a couple videos on his channel in extreme performance engines with the coating.
Whats considered long life for the coating in miles?
Steve Morris son did that with his engine and it worked well.
Thank you Lake. I love all of your content.
You are so welcome!
Big fan of this channel .. great thanks for everything
Glad you enjoy it!
When is some one going to do a skirt finish that holds the oil so it helps rather than just rely on hone pattern
This coating does hold oil.
Bill Nevin , ( RIP ) used to test his stuff at Shaver's occasionally ,,, !
Abraded coating is the way to go
Wet sump , makes for a more accurate blowby reading , with that type of gauge ,,, !
Lake, how long does the coating last? Could I put some on pistons for a sbc for a truck and go 200 000, 300 000 km or more? Is the coating residue damagable for the engine's internals, will they agregate together and block an oil passage, do you have some info on long term use? Great video btw ;)!
Factory coated pistons last forever.
We’ve not seen the coating wear off past the break-in period.
A freight hauling owner/operator installed coated pistons and fresh liners in his 14.7L Cummins diesel engine. The next time he contacted us, he had over 400,000 miles on his in-frame rebuild and the coating was still intact and contributing to reduced blow-by and oil consumption.
The coating itself is comprised of engine-friendly materials, and during break-in comes off in tiny particles that do not clump or coagulate. Any particles not caught by the oil filter will stay suspended in the oil until the first oil change.
@@Line2LineCoatings Thanks for your answer :)!
What will a bad piston coating show up as if it is wearing off once an oil analysis is done? Can it be found by the elements themself or just cylinder/ring wear?
How do you test piston ring seal on the short block before you put the heads on? Thanks.
What is the process for getting pistons coated? Can the pistons remain on the rods for a pressed pin setup?
Contact Line2Line for those details.
Contact them directly, but I read bare piston only plus they must be clean and sanitary according to their instructions or face a cleaning charge. Check their site.
I’m new to engine rebuild, having bought a 1972 Corvette what information do I have to know, for the type of oil I will need?
They must have blocked our previous answer because of a hyperlink, but all of the information you need is on our website, or you can contact us directly.
LAKE. Imagine a piston that doesn't require rings to seal.
They do exist
Nitro rc engines are built like that, if you could scale one of those up to 150-200cc it would make some pretty incredible power
Back in the day when John Medlin was Racing Outboards,He was privy to Dyno testing (2 strokes) & spoke of one test they did just for kicks.....No piston rings, engine was (obviously) hard to start (They had to "wing it") & made a Big jump in RPM & HP
How thick can the coating be applied?
Several thousands thick. These were coated at .005 thickness.
@@TotalSeal Holy shit. I didn't realize you can get a piston skirt coated that thick. Is the piston machined down prior to ensure the correct piston to wall clearance??? Assuming new pistons, fresh bore and hone?
@@aidenmcclendon5457it’s very helpful for reusing existing pistons, so you can hone it .005 oversize and still have the right piston to wall clearance.
@@TotalSeal .0025 per side, or .005 per side? Whats the maximum if you know?
@@danielslocum7169this one was done .0025 per side. Check with Line2Line for more details
They do a good job!!! BUT IT TAKES FOREVER TO GET THEM BACK!!!!
Unfortunately that's due to the overwhelming volume of work we're receiving, but we do offer expedited coating services for an additional charge.
As soon as I see an engine with an Edelbrock carb(?) I cringe.
Why? I'm really curious
