    Before I started to wise up to the options out there, I would be seriously limited to my motherboard choices because I always looked for ones with plenty of onboard SATA. Then I moved to a NAS and got a bunch of drives out of my primary work case... just to run into the same problem again! I'm glad I enjoy this journey through constantly evolving tech...

    I've seen so many of these and just always assumed they're jank and as enticing as they always are passed them up for fear that they'll set my server rack and all its contents on fire. Good to know these are fairly safe as far as not killing any devices plugged into them or setting things on fire. Ill definitely be in the market for some of these

    4 lane m.2 to PCIe slot adapters (with full molex power connectors) *do* exist if you can weed out all the miner garbage. The good ones aren't cheap.

  • @jeremylindemann5117
    @jeremylindemann5117 13 дней назад

    Hey cool, I just recently bought that same i225 M.2 NIC for an opnsense router than I built. As you can see in this video the cable between the M.2 card and the RJ45 port stands vertically from the board quite a bit.
    Those cables/headers were too tall for my Dell Optiplex 7040 micro case so I bought some 90 degree headers and replaced the ones on the M.2 card and the RJ45 port. Unfortunately I've done something wrong, maybe damaged one of the PCB's, not sure. Now it doesn't work properly when I plug in a network cable. The link lights behave weird and it takes a while to establish a connection but it only links at 100Mbps. Not good for 2.5Gbps NIC.
    I'll get the multimeter out some day soon and try to see if there's some high resistance on one of the wire connections. I'm hoping that maybe after I desoldered the original headers that I just didn't clean up the board properly with isopropyl and when I soldered the new headers on the connection was dirty. I have a bad feeling though that I damaged one of the tracers or pads. The electronics on an M.2 card are pretty damn small.
    The router is humming along happily though with a Realtek 8125 2.5Gbps M.2 NiC. I've got another intel i225 one on the way which has a different connector that comes off sideways so I don't have to attempt any more modifications. The Realtek performs really well, about the same as the intel in terms of speed and stability.

  • @annihilatorg

    This is exactly what I want to use in one of my home servers. It's just a b450 board but the top gpu slot supports 4x4x4x4 bifurcation. I'm looking at trying to get a 10gbit nic and additional nvme slots. Unfortunately, it's expensive enough that I'm comparing pricing against a more feature-packed motherboard without needing the duct tape.

    • @yourma-uh5um
      @yourma-uh5um 2 года назад +1

      I'm putting a wireless router/NAS together soon and I'm looking for a bifurcation card that can do 4 x PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 slots. If I could find one of those cards but also does 10 gigabit then that would be a nice bonus and would probably increase my options for choosing a mini-ITX board, right now 2.5Gb seems to be the most for mini-ITX.
      Like you said though, price may mean it's probably more economical to just buy a higher end board would the bells and whistles already on it.

  • @ierosgr
    @ierosgr 2 года назад +1

    m.2 -> pcie x4 for a mono/dual sfp+ pci card. Shouldn t you mention if the provided power/wattage from m.2 slot can feed the 10gbe sfp+ pci card? What if no? How could you bypass that? (you should make a video showing this and that the card works fine afterwards)
    That is why most often these adapters come with a 4 pin power header (a little bigger than the one who would power a fan like device)

    • @marcogenovesi8570
      @marcogenovesi8570 2 года назад

      The adapter doesn't have power lines connected because the slot power budget is NOT anywhere near PCIe slot power budget. If you don't use the 4 pin power header (or sata or whatever they use) then the card has no power.
