Unquestionably you’ve got a massive head start Devin... my dad was the same when he switched from drums to bass :-)

Another great lesson! Yes, please finish taking apart the song. I'll never turn down a lesson from someone of your caliber of bass playing!

Great lesson! I'm just a beginner, but two of my buddies are experienced rock guitar players and they want to just "jam" with me soon. I have absolutely no idea what I should play in that setting.

Hey Paul! How's your bass playing? I hope that you're still getting on with it. I would be happy to hear about it and see if there's something I can help. Cheers!

I'm in exactly the same position as Frank so this lesson was right up my street! Thank you so much. Question. In the given chord sheet (Country Roads) when it comes to Am I wonder whether I should be playing notes from the A minor scale and not the A Major scale. I'm confused. Yes please take the whole song apart. Nearly every Ukulele band I see (just come back from the North Tyneside Uke Festival) has a bass player these days and for most of the strictly amateur groups this is a person who volunteers to learn bass from scratch so there is a big audience out there for this kind of instruction. Thanks again for a very helpful lesson.

Thanks for the heads up - I'm just learning how big the Uke market is! We're in the key of A major here. So the notes come directly from the A major scale. If you hear just 'A'... that always infers we're in the major. You'd heard he me directly reference 'A Minor' if we're in the minor... reach out if that doesn't make sense :-)

The chart he sent for Country Roads was in C, as you mentioned, but you changed to A. Messed with me.

Thanks for the lesson....but I am confused. The original chord sheet is in C and your re-write is in A. Are you saying that although the Uke players are in C the Bass should be in A??? Or are you using A just for lesson purposes?? I didn't catch you saying anything in the lesson other than stating that you were playing in A. Also a Tab sheet would have been helpful. Keep up the good work.

Hi Sherri, just seen your comment... we have the option to play this song in what ever key we like. The Uke guy here chose to do it in C (I'm not 100% why, maybe it works well on the uke)... however the original was in A. When teaching I generally try to work with original keys... so people can just pull up the track on spotify or the like and play along with no transposition needed. Hope that helps!

In ukulele groups loads of songs are written in C, because so many are amateur musicians and that’s the easiest key to play. For those of us learning bass ukulele, there are loads of tabs for songs out there, but most are in the original keys…so we are constantly trying to transpose them which can be very challenging . Country Roads is one very particular example - it has nearly done my head in trying to transpose the tab….so often I just go into my own version. But it lacks some of the subtleties which are pleasing to the ear. So, for ukulele bass players, how to play in different styles on sight would be the most useful skill to have explained.
